It was love at first sight. The clouds were ominous and about to burst and there at the end of Ebenezer Place shone a beacon of light with wooden benches, a clean and not busy interior and a huge front counter dedicated to one thing, coffee. Don't be surprised if you can't get a chai latte or a hot chocolate here or if the breakfast menu is 4 items long, the title of the cafe is "specialty coffee" and that is clearly what these guys are made to do well. My soy latte was huge and in the most delightful cup. My dining companion's cappuccino was done "in traditional fashion" (without chocolate on top) - who knew, and to top it all off I was offered sparkling water out of the tap. Could this be the holy grail of hipster coffee bars in the east? If they start serving sparkling water in jugs me thinks so. Then he caught my eye. Sitting inconspicuously at the end of the counter, not causing a fuss was Louis. One gaze at his crusty brown exterior and soft, tender inside I knew I had fallen hard in love. So I got up all my courage and invited him to lunch. Louis only joined me briefly, but the moment we spent together was unique. I started to peel back the layers of white sourdough, fresh baby spinach, avocado, and roasted tomatoes to discover the piece de resistance, his gooey Woodside Chevre inner layer. I cannot say enough good things about Exchange and I can't stop thinking about when I can go back! My housemate and I have been listening to coffee podcasts lately and have therefore become slight 'coffee snobs'! After reading some rave reviews for this place that does coffee 'properly' I had to check it out. It was a busy morning when I arrived as an event was being set up in the laneway outside and people were popping in for their morning coffees. However I was not treated as 'one of the crowd.' Instead I was greeted by a very friendly barista and as soon as I was seated I was brought sparkling table water (a joy in itself!). I decided to try a filtered coffee and was pleasantly surprised by the price - especially when it came and I was able to fill my cup three times over! I loved the presentation of a glass jug and cup on a wooden board - very simple and sophisticated. I liked that it was served with no milk or sugar, even on the side - keeping to how it is traditionally supposed to be drunk. The addition of some 'tasting notes' is fabulous. I loved reading about the people who own the plantation while I drank their coffee. I am looking forward to building up somewhat of a collection of these cards the more I visit! I didn't eat anything here on this occasion but I'd like to go back and try - the food I saw coming out looked amazing. The menu is very simple and sparse with only 3 or so choices on the board - but I believe this is so they can focus on making the coffee perfect. Next time I'd like to try the espresso flight and have more of a chat to the people working there - from snippets of overheard conversation it sounds like they know what they are talking about and have lots to teach. So if you're looking for a quick coffee on the run this place will do the job - but if you are more looking to sit and really savour and appreciate a well made coffee - this is the place! read more

Exchange Speciality Coffee is one of those places. It is a place that I know I can rely on for good, strong and quality coffee! The service is always fast, friendly and inviting. I actually cannot walk past the place without stopping for a coffee. Groupie anyone? As for the menu, well there are a lot of really lovely items here. I have tried some of the sandwiches and cake. All very fresh and of high quality. I love a place that takes care in all aspects of their business. I cannot fault them. Also, I should mention for tea lovers that they have a really lovely tea menu as well. So they cater for all tastes. Which is important! As for the décor, it is minimalist. Which I love. A delightful space serving top notch coffee from Sydney's Mecca, Melbourne's Market Lane and others further afield. I was lucky enough to visit when they'd had a delivery from Workshop coffee in London. A delicious Kenyan Aeropress got my heart racing with juicy berry flavours (admittedly I'd already had two coffees in the hour beforehand) and had I not already had an enormous breakfast I would have made a serious dent in one of their door-stop sized sandwiches. Exchange is a hip specialty coffee shop on Vardon Avenue in the East End. Simply decorated, clean bright & white, there are a handful of tables and chairs inside and more outside on the sidewalk. A compact list of coffees spanning espresso to cold drip is complemented by Waterloo Teas, a few savouries and a few sweets to nibble on. Being indecisive types, we opted for the coffee flight, which, the friendly barista explained, is the current blend of coffee presented two different ways. An espresso and a latte were presented on a wooden board with a postcard explaining the origin of the coffee, the method and time of harvest, farming practices, roasting method and tasting notes. The espresso was strong and to my taste bitter but Mr Wino said it had a natural sweetness. I found the latte overwhelmed by milk. Service was friendly & quick, prices weren't bad, and if you stick with coffee styles that allow the flavours to shine (low milk) you'll have a good time. read more

One word that I can use to describe this place is 'astounding'. The coffee there is brewed to absolute perfection, if you're within the vicinity I highly recommend you pop by and try a coffee out for yourself. The atmosphere of the shop is amazing also, they've got a 50's to 60's vibe going on inside, with wooden tables, metallic seats and awesome music. Nice spot to sit for coffee and people watch. You're on the corner and the walls are glass so you will be pretty much facing the outside wall no matter what. One of the few places that make an actual flat white in Adelaide rather than a latte in a mug. Menu has done very delicious, albeit light, salads and some things on bread and muesli type items. Exchange is located out the back of the old Adelaide fruit and veg exchange building. A really clean and modern facade with a warm and open interior. Had seen the pikelets on social media and had to try them out to see if they were as good as they looked. They were. Got a filter coffee to go with my brunch that was so flavoursome and confirmed all of the good word of mouth is heard about the coffee here. I've only been here twice, and tried the "grilled pear, brie, rocket, onion, jam on a brioche bun", the filter brew coffee, a cup of soy flat white and the bircher muesli. I have to say except the filter coffee(maybe I'm not an authentic coffee lover...) I enjoyed every bite of the other three!! The bun, I thought it was too small for $7.5 but after I eat it, the size is just right for its rich layers flavour!! The soy flat white, It was such a glass of joy!(what? am I making sentences?) The Bircher muesli! My tongue told my eyes to close them to enjoy the first bite---it was heavenly good!!! the oats, the flaked almonds, the raisins, the fresh strawberry slices and the mint on the top!!! It was a perfect combination of moist, crispy, sweet and fresh!! I'm being emotional...it's just so nice to have a bowl of muesli a day before final exams! Oh and why I still rate 4 stars not 5? I wish I had something different to say for the sake of a balanced conversation, but from the staff to the fit out to the sparkling water on tap, I was completely taken by Exchange Speciality Coffee. And then I tried the coffee. And the peppermint rooibos. And it was all over. I feel like Im being generous with my 5-star reviews, but with the help of yelp I've just been able to go more places 5-star worthy that I never would have seen before. Exchange Specialty Coffee is one of them. Located just off of Ebeneezer Place next to a pub and among a few other coffee and cafes, I probably would never have even seen this little shop. The decor is great, minimalist, with a couple of small tables (a few outside), bench space and a large table for a group. It looks like the sort of place you'd spy all the uni students with their laptops, laughing to themselves that only they know of this gem of a coffee shop. Without a doubt the best coffee I have tried in adelaide (hallelujah!), the service was great and even though the menu was small it was absolutely delicious. I had The Gloria (really a bruschetta I suppose), which was fresh, warm and yummy, and totally cheap for what you got. The coffee could have been drunk without even a teaspoon of sugar as it has this great nutty kind of taste, it was the perfect temperature, not burnt, and served in nice cups that were easy to hold (with handles so you don't burn yourself!). If I could never ever go anywhere else for coffee again I would totally be fine with that. Really. read more

In the espresso machine Coffee seems to be on a constant rotate an you can order specialty blends, so you will always get a unique experience with every cup. The barristers are very knowledgable and are able and willing to take your taste buds on a journey. Food is spectacular. All the goodies I can't bring myself to make at home. Love this place. Walking in you're hit with an immediate sense of calm. This place is all about the beverage - the best coffee, tea and hot chocolate. I have to admit I've yet to have a coffee here which is the reason owner Tom set it up BUT as a self-confessed tea addict I can highly rate their selection. Food is also good - though limited quality of the gourmet sandwiches and baked goods is high (my fav is The Brit or Reuben for old-school goodness). Perfect for a quick latte whilst reviewing notes, a macchiato accompanied by a good chat with friends, a take away to carry you though a lecture, or a long black over one of the unique magazines available for reading. I love the clean, modern aesthetic and I've never had a bad coffee here. After introducing a friend to Exchange yesterday, I swear I saw him go through what seemed like a minor spiritual ecstasy when he took the first sip of his latte. They're aren't about the chai lattes (they do have a hot chocolate and herbal teas on the menu for the non-caffeinated amongst us) and food choices are limited. I've always had a soft spot for Ebenezer Place and I am more than happy to see it has become quite the coffee and food hub of late. On the corner of Vardon Avenue, just before you reach East Terrace, is 'Exchange' and what a lovely little gem you are, aren't you? Not particularly eye-catching from the outside, once you get in there though it is really something else. Full-length glass windows let plenty of light in and creates a beautiful mood within the space. It's just really calm and relaxed, and the coffee, well, it's pretty bloody special. I was served by a man with dreads (didn't catch his name), who was warm and friendly without being forced. He's just a chilled-out barista with a knack for making really, bloody good coffee. I ordered a skinny cap, and it was divine. The perfect amount of creaminess and coffee strength and zero bitterness. Huzzah! I cannot fault it one bit, and that almost never happens when I order 'skinny' anything! I am looking forward to shoving some of the food they offer into my gob, but for now I'm rating it on it's coffee, and it is top notch! (They also have 'Smith Journal' for you to read too so it's happy days all round!) Just get down there before everyone else hears about it or before the hipsters start taking it over! read more

After a search on Yelp of where to go for coffee and lunch today, my daughter chose Exchange. The welcome by staff was friendly and the coffee was awesome, the best coffee I have found in Adelaide so far! I had the field mushrooms and although a simple meal I couldn't have been happier or fuller (couldn't eat it all). We where offered a choice of still or sparling water that was on tap and I was impressed with how clean everything was especially the cutlery and glasses,I'm fussy about that sort of thing when I eat out. I went to the exchange a while ago and was really looking foward to it. I was actually pretty dissapointed. The portions are small and the seating arrangements are just... weird. No table to yourself and the other option is the bench. Might go back for just the coffee to maybe study on my own because I love the lane its down, but that is about all. read more
