Who would've thought I'd find authentic Cantonese dim sum in Oregon?! I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised! Welcome to Excellent Cuisine! And let me tell you, they definitely lived up to their name! If you've never experienced traditional Cantonese dim sum, you're in for a treat! When you arrive, let the staff know how many people are in your party, and they'll get you seated. Once you're settled, the fun begins! This is traditional dim sum with carts rolling around the dining room, filled with all kinds of delicious goodies. You look, you point, you ask questions, and you pick whatever catches your eye! Don't know what something is? Just ask! That's part of the experience! Since we speak Cantonese, ordering was pretty easy for us. We were able to communicate directly with the staff, request specific dishes, and even ask about the daily specials. Some items were brought right over from the carts, while others were specially prepared for us. Now, let's talk about the FOOD! We ordered quite a spread of traditional dim sum favorites, and I have to say, everything was delicious! Nothing stood out as mediocre. Every dish had flavor, and I was genuinely impressed with the quality. One of my absolute favorites was the sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, also known as Lo Mai Gai. Oh my goodness, SO GOOD! There's something about unwrapping that fragrant leaf and getting to the delicious rice inside. Definitely one of my favorites from our visit! Our table was filled with all sorts of Cantonese goodies, from dumplings and steamed dishes to savory bites and sweet treats. We certainly didn't leave hungry! LOL! The restaurant itself was bustling with activity. The dining room was packed, carts were moving around, and the staff was constantly on the go. Speaking of service, everyone we interacted with was friendly and helpful. Just be prepared to flag someone down if you need something. They're moving around like crazy trying to take care of everyone! A little patience goes a long way here. What impressed me most was how authentic the experience felt. From the traditional cart service to being able to order in Cantonese, it reminded me of the dim sum experiences I've enjoyed over the years. If you're new to dim sum, don't be intimidated! Come hungry, bring some friends or family, and be adventurous. Half the fun is trying a little bit of everything! Any good Portland food historian would know that the heydey for this location was Wong's King (#1), which really helped re-establish the legitimacy of Portland's Chinese food scene. This Montavilla part of Portland has become the main Chinese enclave of the city, especially since Old Town's Chinatown has become a shell of itself. (#2) Excellent Cuisine picked right up where Wong's King's since the pandemic and have remained a steady option for Cantonese and dim sum lovers in the area. While the English name seems bold, it's a much simpler take than their poetic Chinese name ("魚樂軒") which is more akin to a "pavillion of joy" with the play on words of fish (魚) like the auspicious phrase "年年有餘" to suggest that each year to blessed with abundance. The place has held up well over the years, with a large number of round tables, a wannabe banquet interior, and plenty of Toisanese waitresses running the show. The steady regulars that still frequent the place are typically Chinese, and thus this place is really as local as it gets. Their dim sum hour has proved popular, which offer a lot of the very classics that people have come to enjoy: shrimp dumplings, siu mai, sticky rice wraps, and pork spareribs over rice rolls. The mini wooden serving vessels are a nice alternative to the stainless steel steamer baskets. As with most Cantonese banquet places, their dinner hour is where they shine and Excellent Cuisine is no exception. Their longevity noodles (乾燒伊麵) were very tasty and not too greasy, while the fried salt and pepper fish (椒鹽炸魚片) nearly stole the show with just the right amount of seasoning and crunch. I still can't get over there semi spicy cucumber salad (涼拌黃瓜) as a starter (#3), which had plenty of spice and a good kick. The scallops over Chinese broccoli (帶子芥蘭) were an immediate hit, and the first dish to be completely cleared out. My forever favorite, eggs and shrimp (蝦仁炒蛋 / 滑蛋蝦仁) were silky smooth and the sauteed string beans (四季豆) had just the right amount of snap and plenty of flavor. The prices are on part with the sticker shock that is now Portland dining, but the real blemish was the service. Several of the waitresses rushed the order, were difficult to reach, and in turn, gave my table plenty of attitude. While service is never optimal at many Asian spots, the expectation changes when one pays above the certain price (#4). Despite it all, I'm extremely satisfied with my experience at Excellent Cuisine, which mostly lived up to its name. Came on Monday (Labor Day holiday) at open at 9:30am - plenty of parking. Note the lot was sort of full when we left at 10:30 with some aggressive cars vying for our spot. We came in with the early crowd rush and were waved directly to a table and ordered quickly from carts. We received tea and water right away (and people did come around to check occasionally). We only ordered from two dim sum carts because my friend hadn't tried dim sum really before and my daughter has limited interest in dim sum (4 yrs old). We got riblets, shrimp dumping, shu mai, sticky rice, xiao long bao, pork bao (char siu bao). We weren't offered more or the menu, but I think they looked at our table and decided we had plenty (we didn't try to order more or ask for a menu). If I was with my husband I would've gotten some radish cake and tripe and possibly a vegetable dish, but it seemed like overkill for the 3 of us since my kid would only eat xlb wrappers without soup. Whenever I'm on the side of town or craving dim sum, this is the place that I end up picking over others. The place is typically very clean and they always have hot food roaming around in the different carts. Their chicken feet is good and shumai and shrimp noodles. I also like getting the fried shrimp balls. Although the xiao long bao is a bit or miss. This lady aggressively asked if we wanted some and there wasnt any soup in it at all. There's typically never wait but the parking lot can be a bit small. Definitely gigs the spot every few months. read more

Thinking that it would be crowded, we arrived before opening time and saw that there were about six people waiting to get in. LOL! We were guaranteed a first round seat! Service was efficient since we sat near the kitchen - so we could see what's coming out fresh and hot! I asked if there were taro puffs (my niece's favorite) and hom sui gok (my dad's favorite). OK this dim sum experience is probably the most authentic you will get! Which means that the vibes are chaotic, filled with Chinese aunties uncles and families, and the cart ladies are efficient but not overly friendly lol We came on a Thursday for lunch around 1pm during spring break and it was PACKED! Parking is funky and tight but they do have a bigger lot in the back. Luckily my friend had been there before and knew how to get us a table but if you just walk in during their busy times it could be a little confusing on what you need to do. We tried a few types of dumplings, rice noodle rolls, pork rib-lets, lotus leaf rice, bakery items, etc. The bakery buns with egg yolk are the best, and the shrimp dumplings as well as chive dumplings are very good, too. Dim sum for Christmas has become our new tradition and Excellent Cuisine fills the bill. The restaurant opens at 9:30 in the morning and there's usually a line already forming by 9, so get there early! Parking can be a challenge because the lot is small and fills up fast. The dim sum offerings are freshly cooked - hot and tasty. Service can be a bit spotty - sometimes needing to ask for tea or chili crisp or napkins more than once - but considering the place is packed on Christmas mornings, the servers are always moving, always trying to keep ahead of the requests. Our faves include the shrimp dumplings, shumai, and some other tasty stuff that I have no idea what it is (my son & SIL always know, though, so I trust them) and there's always a full cart coming by with something new that we haven't had before. It doesn't take long before we're stuffed to the gills with no space left for another bite. As full as the dining room is, it's still a great holiday experience - as we were leaving, the line of people waiting to get in was way out the door. PS. First time here. I was happy to see they had a parking lot. The building it's in is mixed in with different businesses. (I want to try the boba place next time too) Upon walking in, it's a huge place. No one was at the front so we kinda stood there for a moment. They had the hostess stand and "Please wait to be seated" sign pushed against the wall, so I was not sure what to do. Someone finally came by and sat us. This place has tons of seating and it looks like it has a couple of private rooms too. For dinner the dim sum was limited so I'll have to return during lunch to try that. They brought out a complimentary cucumber dish, which was really good. We ordered the roasted duck, cashew chicken, bbq pork show mein, eggplant with tangy sauce (no spice), and sesame beef which did not have any spice. Not sure if it was a mix-up because we ordered the other dish without spice, but I like my sesame beef spicy. All the food was good. Excellent Cuisine is a fun restaurant to visit with a group, but it was not my favorite. This is partly my fault - I was unfamiliar with many of the dishes and did not know what I might like. I struggled to find sufficient vegetarian food (again, could have been because I did not know what the food was) and did not want to ask the workers a million questions because the restaurant was quite busy. I really enjoyed their steamed vegetables! They were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was delicious. I could not stop eating them! If you visit, I would highly recommend making a reservation and going on a weekday to avoid crowds. It can take some time for a table to open up if the restaurant is packed. You may not be able to find a parking spot in the restaurant's lot, but there are plenty of free, empty spaces in the surrounding neighborhood. read more

We waited about 30 min to get seated for dim sum. They didn't have a lot of waiting room so there were a lot of people waiting outside and in the foyer of the building. The buns were good, but most of the food was cold and not enjoyable, and even the soda had a strange aftertaste. We got there, and the place was packed, checked in at the front table, they gave us a number and walked away, didn't know what was happening or that we needed to wait, seeing some tables open, and appeared no one was waiting (only reason for the 0.5 less star). I never got the chance to try the new ownership ever since I moved to Seattle, but I finally had the opportunity to see what they're all about. I don't think Portland has a great dim sum scene compared to other cities, but Excellent Cuisine managed to be a worthy spot for these bite-sized cravings. Other than Hk Cafe, this is another favorite dim sum go to for us. It is easy to miss, tucked into a nook next to Ocha boba tea at King Plaza. The parking is tight and always full. The entrance is dark and dank, slightly run down. It's not a very large space so it didn't take much for people to fill up the tables. It took a few minutes before we were acknowledged. We were seated right away though. Service was pretty responsive. The carts came by pretty frequently. All our tea and water was refilled without having to ask. Out of all the items we got, the shumai was the tastiest. They were filled with flavorful, juicy pork, with umami undertones. And they were a sizably plump. We had newbies so ordered a few dishes that would appeal to all. I was very happy with the pea shoots, braised tofu, green beans with beef. The Chinese BBQ (BBQ pork, roast duck & crispy pork belly) was a bit disappointing. The skin on the pork belly was not crispy and the BBQ (char siu) was weak. The duck was okay. The honey walnut shrimp was also a bit soggy but I did appreciate that they didn't over laden the dish with mayo. Service was decent, and they even had a wedding party the evening of our visit. They also got the basic Chinese-American stuff like the orange chicken and whatnot if you are bringing your grandparents. But man I could go back like 20 times and get something different every time. Also you can literally just pick your lobster/crab/octopus/fish out of the tank and then choose which way you want it cooked out of like 7 different styles. Have I seriously not reviewed Excellent Cuisine? I've done all of you a huge disservice then, haven't I? Because this place has been my go-to Sunday morning Dim Sum for years! It's a smaller venue than the other cafe not too far from here, but it doesn't seem to have the long lines first thing in the morning. However, it should be said that the later in the day you go to get dim sum in Portland, the longer you'll have to wait. I've enjoyed everything I've ordered here. There's a large variety of carts that come through in rapid succession, with staff who don't seem overly pushy. Because there are still a few dishes I'm not familiar with, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming deciding what to order. My favorites include shumai, xialongbao, pork buns, congee, and the red bean shrimp noodles. The red bean shrimp noodles are so yummy, but beware, they need to be requested off the menu and the portion is quite large as it's meant to be shared. The parking lot at Excellent Cuisine is rather small, especially since it's shared with several other businesses in the little mall. The neighborhood is a little rough, so be careful parking your vehicle too far from watchful eyes. Even if I've had to circle the parking lot a few times, I generally find a parking spot opens up soon enough. The folks here are friendly, fast, and very helpful. When compared to the Bay area or Vancouver BC, the Portland dim sum scene is weak. With that said, Excellent Cuisine is pretty decent with fairly authentic tasting dim sum items. This place was bustling on the weekend we went with many Chinese families chowing down (which is usually a good sign). It was such a treat to visit a dim sum spot that still uses carts! We arrived around 10 a.m. on a Sunday and were seated right away with no wait for our party of four. There were even a few parking spots left in the lot. By 10:30, a crowd had started to gather at the entrance. The food was delicious, and it was relatively easy to request a few additional items that weren't on the menu. Once we finished eating, the staff was clearly eager to turn the table, which we didn't mind given how busy it was (but that might feel a bit rushed for some). Excellent at Excellent. They open at 10am and serve dishes on rolling carts like a proper dim sum/yum cha place. We got here at 11:15am on a Sunday to get a number written on a piece of paper and had to wait 20 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, the carts came to us and we started to order and eat. Our water, hot tea, and chili sauce hadn't even hit the table before our first bite. The food is very authentic and they serve everything from the staples of Haw Gaw, Siu Mai, Cha Sieu Bao (baked pork bun) to Foong Jau (steamed chicken feet) and newer items like a Piggy Bao and Steamed Taro with Meat dumplings. All items were fresh, hot, and tasty. The service is what you'd expect in a typical traditional Cantonese speaking restaurant. read more
