Dimsum breakfast in Portland, Oregon... After 8am mass, we drove to Excellent Cuisine because it was nearby and because I saw a photo of the piggy buns. However, we were too full to order piggy buns and we didn't see them on the rolling wagons. Thinking that it would be crowded, we arrived before opening time and saw that there were about six people waiting to get in. LOL! We were guaranteed a first round seat! Service was efficient since we sat near the kitchen - so we could see what's coming out fresh and hot! I asked if there were taro puffs (my niece's favorite) and hom sui gok (my dad's favorite). These fried items would be coming on the next wagon, but the server went and got them for us! Wow! Thanks! We got shrimp and chive dumplings and plain shrimp dumplings from this stemed items wagon. Of course, we had to have custard tarts and the cute piggy and ducky-shaped puddings! The coconut and mango flavors were subtle. We liked the coconut more, even though the ducky wiggled more! This was a really fun and tasty meal! We wouldn't mind returning! We appreciated the free shared parking, convenient restroom, and beautiful, clean environment! read more

Everything we tried is really good. We went at opening which helped because by the time we left in about 50 minutes the restaurant was full!. We also bought half a duck, the piggy dumplings and duck shaped gelatin to try at home. Their wrapper is a little softer than was we normally get in Hawaii but I like it better. read more

Dinner chef is amazing! The food is a different vibe from Dim Sum The Roast Duck is served on a flat candle lit ceramic warming tray as the first dish after the cucumber appetizer. It Excellently served, with the dishes served spaced apart so we could savor each dish at the height of its freshness. We're here for Veah's birthday. This is easily my favorite dim sum spot! I've never had a bad experience here. Even when the house is packed, the service is incredibly efficient. OK this dim sum experience is probably the most authentic you will get! Which means that the vibes are chaotic, filled with Chinese aunties uncles and families, and the cart ladies are efficient but not overly friendly lol We came on a Thursday for lunch around 1pm during spring break and it was PACKED! Parking is funky and tight but they do have a bigger lot in the back. Luckily my friend had been there before and knew how to get us a table but if you just walk in during their busy times it could be a little confusing on what you need to do. Cart ladies came around with their carts full of goodies. I was too hungry to take a picture of everything we got but the favorites were definitely the chicken feet, siu mai, shrimp rice rolls, and the ham sui gok (we had 2 orders of these! Freshly fried and perfect balance of sweet and salty) It didn't take a lot of dishes for us to get full for a table of 5 (maybe 10-11 things?) Excellent Cuisine is a fun restaurant to visit with a group, but it was not my favorite. This is partly my fault - I was unfamiliar with many of the dishes and did not know what I might like. I struggled to find sufficient vegetarian food (again, could have been because I did not know what the food was) and did not want to ask the workers a million questions because the restaurant was quite busy. I really enjoyed their steamed vegetables! They were cooked perfectly, and the sauce was delicious. I could not stop eating them! If you visit, I would highly recommend making a reservation and going on a weekday to avoid crowds. It can take some time for a table to open up if the restaurant is packed. You may not be able to find a parking spot in the restaurant's lot, but there are plenty of free, empty spaces in the surrounding neighborhood. read more

I was surprised to see a Wikipedia post dedicated to it as well. So a new restaurant that is a reminder of the original one added another good reason to visit and they didn't disappoint. A large hall with multiple tables that can fit a crowd during busy hours. It was also one of the best hot and sour soup that I had, dumplings were delicious and so was everything really. Dim sum for Christmas has become our new tradition and Excellent Cuisine fills the bill. The restaurant opens at 9:30 in the morning and there's usually a line already forming by 9, so get there early! Parking can be a challenge because the lot is small and fills up fast. The dim sum offerings are freshly cooked - hot and tasty. Service can be a bit spotty - sometimes needing to ask for tea or chili crisp or napkins more than once - but considering the place is packed on Christmas mornings, the servers are always moving, always trying to keep ahead of the requests. Our faves include the shrimp dumplings, shumai, and some other tasty stuff that I have no idea what it is (my son & SIL always know, though, so I trust them) and there's always a full cart coming by with something new that we haven't had before. It doesn't take long before we're stuffed to the gills with no space left for another bite. As full as the dining room is, it's still a great holiday experience - as we were leaving, the line of people waiting to get in was way out the door. PS. First time here. I was happy to see they had a parking lot. The building it's in is mixed in with different businesses. (I want to try the boba place next time too) Upon walking in, it's a huge place. No one was at the front so we kinda stood there for a moment. They had the hostess stand and "Please wait to be seated" sign pushed against the wall, so I was not sure what to do. Someone finally came by and sat us. This place has tons of seating and it looks like it has a couple of private rooms too. For dinner the dim sum was limited so I'll have to return during lunch to try that. They brought out a complimentary cucumber dish, which was really good. We ordered the roasted duck, cashew chicken, bbq pork show mein, eggplant with tangy sauce (no spice), and sesame beef which did not have any spice. Not sure if it was a mix-up because we ordered the other dish without spice, but I like my sesame beef spicy. All the food was good. I think my favorites were the eggplant and sesame beef, but I want to try them spicy. We had a lot of leftovers so we didn't even think of checking out what they had for dessert. Dim sum here is the real deal. They're legit, plump and delicious. To give you an example, we ordered the gluttonous rice wrapped in the lotus leaf. When we cut into one, we were very surprised to find a duck egg in it! Only the traditional Chinese dim sum makers put that!! The only criticism I have is that there needs to be more dim sum carts. It took a really long time for them to reach our table. Lots of customers were getting frustrated. The ladies pushing the dim sum carts would bottle neck in a corner and didn'tove around enough. The bonus is that we ate next to a Portland Trailblazer, Yang Hansen. Wow, he was tall! Can't wait to come back to try their entrees. We waited about 30 min to get seated for dim sum. They didn't have a lot of waiting room so there were a lot of people waiting outside and in the foyer of the building. Once inside, felt like your typical busy dimsum place. Service seemed good despite busy atmosphere. You didn't have to flag anyone down for extra siomai or anything. Most of the dimsum was above average of what we've had in Los Angeles and the fried noodles were pretty good. We'll come back if we crave dimsum again. read more

9/21/2025 drove down to Oregon, decided to try Chinese, and wanted to do dim sum the old way with carts tableside, yelp pointed us on the right direction. We got there, and the place was packed, checked in at the front table, they gave us a number and walked away, didn't know what was happening or that we needed to wait, seeing some tables open, and appeared no one was waiting (only reason for the 0.5 less star). We heard numbers being called, before ours, and had people waiting outside. AHA!!! We get it now. Anyways, once we got seated, we just waited for the carts to make their rounds. Food was good, fresh and generous. Seemed like they only had chili oil, I prefer the chili paste with the rooster, but I guess that's Vietnamese/Thai. I remember when this used to be Wong's growing up, but Excellent Cuisine continues their legacy of Dim Sum. I never got the chance to try the new ownership ever since I moved to Seattle, but I finally had the opportunity to see what they're all about. I came with a large group of about 10 people, and we ordered every classic you can think of, whether that be shumai, rice rolls, or even honey walnut shrimp. I don't think Portland has a great dim sum scene compared to other cities, but Excellent Cuisine managed to be a worthy spot for these bite-sized cravings. I would actually even go as far as to say that they are even better than the predecessor. Service is what you'd expect out of most dim sum restaurants, quick and straight to the point. I also miss having the experience of push-cart dim sum, we don't have many of those left up in Seattle. Props to them for still keeping this tradition going. I'm sorry but no. Service was fast, food is forgettable. This is the worst dim sum I've had in my life. Ha gow - super thick casing that also fell apart the second you picked it up. Went again, Still the best Chinese restaurant I've been to. They have a menu of choices bigger than a bible. Crazy shit you never heard of. They also got the basic Chinese-American stuff like the orange chicken and whatnot if you are bringing your grandparents. But man I could go back like 20 times and get something different every time. Also you can literally just pick your lobster/crab/octopus/fish out of the tank and then choose which way you want it cooked out of like 7 different styles. Great place for big groups so you can try more stuff. They even have a few tables w/ lazy Susans (rotating). Mostly Chinese servers tho so don't expect too much for service. read more

Other than Hk Cafe, this is another favorite dim sum go to for us. It is easy to miss, tucked into a nook next to Ocha boba tea at King Plaza. The parking is tight and always full. The entrance is dark and dank, slightly run down. It's not a very large space so it didn't take much for people to fill up the tables. It took a few minutes before we were acknowledged. We were seated right away though. Service was pretty responsive. The carts came by pretty frequently. All our tea and water was refilled without having to ask. Out of all the items we got, the shumai was the tastiest. They were filled with flavorful, juicy pork, with umami undertones. And they were a sizably plump. Was looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant while up in Portland. My cousin suggested we try this place out. It was comforting to hear the hustle and bustle as we entered and after looking at the menu, I was very hopeful. My cousin and I ordered for our party of 7. We had newbies so ordered a few dishes that would appeal to all. I was very happy with the pea shoots, braised tofu, green beans with beef. The Chinese BBQ (BBQ pork, roast duck & crispy pork belly) was a bit disappointing. The skin on the pork belly was not crispy and the BBQ (char siu) was weak. The duck was okay. The honey walnut shrimp was also a bit soggy but I did appreciate that they didn't over laden the dish with mayo. Service was decent, and they even had a wedding party the evening of our visit. Have I seriously not reviewed Excellent Cuisine? I've done all of you a huge disservice then, haven't I? Because this place has been my go-to Sunday morning Dim Sum for years! It's a smaller venue than the other cafe not too far from here, but it doesn't seem to have the long lines first thing in the morning. However, it should be said that the later in the day you go to get dim sum in Portland, the longer you'll have to wait. I've enjoyed everything I've ordered here. There's a large variety of carts that come through in rapid succession, with staff who don't seem overly pushy. Because there are still a few dishes I'm not familiar with, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming deciding what to order. My favorites include shumai, xialongbao, pork buns, congee, and the red bean shrimp noodles. The red bean shrimp noodles are so yummy, but beware, they need to be requested off the menu and the portion is quite large as it's meant to be shared. The parking lot at Excellent Cuisine is rather small, especially since it's shared with several other businesses in the little mall. The neighborhood is a little rough, so be careful parking your vehicle too far from watchful eyes. Even if I've had to circle the parking lot a few times, I generally find a parking spot opens up soon enough. The folks here are friendly, fast, and very helpful. Excellent Cuisine is definitely one of my favorite dim sum houses in Portland. Check them out! read more

It was such a treat to visit a dim sum spot that still uses carts! We arrived around 10 a.m. on a Sunday and were seated right away with no wait for our party of four. There were even a few parking spots left in the lot. By 10:30, a crowd had started to gather at the entrance. The food was delicious, and it was relatively easy to request a few additional items that weren't on the menu. Once we finished eating, the staff was clearly eager to turn the table, which we didn't mind given how busy it was (but that might feel a bit rushed for some). I also grabbed two takeout dishes on my way home, and they were both a huge letdown. When compared to the Bay area or Vancouver BC, the Portland dim sum scene is weak. With that said, Excellent Cuisine is pretty decent with fairly authentic tasting dim sum items. This place was bustling on the weekend we went with many Chinese families chowing down (which is usually a good sign). Table turnover was rapid such that we only had a 30 minute wait during peak lunch hour. Service was friendly and the dim sum carts came around frequently. The atmosphere was reminiscent of a crowded chaotic Hong Kong restaurant......a good thing. Stand out items were sticky rice (full of savory fillings) beef balls & chicken feet. Each dim sum plate ranged from $6 to $8.50 so expect to spend $15-$25 per diner for lunch. Not bad given all the variety one gets when having yum cha. We got here at 11:15am on a Sunday to get a number written on a piece of paper and had to wait 20 minutes for a table. Once we were seated, the carts came to us and we started to order and eat. Our water, hot tea, and chili sauce hadn't even hit the table before our first bite. The food is very authentic and they serve everything from the staples of Haw Gaw, Siu Mai, Cha Sieu Bao (baked pork bun) to Foong Jau (steamed chicken feet) and newer items like a Piggy Bao and Steamed Taro with Meat dumplings. I'm torn about this. Coming from San Francisco many moons ago I knew finding very-good to excellent dim sum would be a challenge in the Great Northwest. Still is. The food was good - no nasty after effects later if you know what I mean. But not really great -more fair to good (3-4 range). They were very busy and I'll admit they have a wide selection here compared to so many other "dim sum" places in Portland. Can be very noisy and almost chaotic at times. Service was sub-par with a hit-and-miss to order and when the carts do come (rather around infrequently) you either get it now or wait. However, there are better dim sum spots in other major cities in the US. I special ordered the red rice shrimp noodles. They make it fresh to order which is nice. I wish the inside was more crispy and crunchy with the soft plump shrimp for a bigger texture contrast. The har gow and shumai are classics, however the har gow skin broke easily. The salted egg yolk custard buns were good, freshly baked when we got it. The steamed ribs with kabocha pumpkin were good as well as their beef tripe. I like that they have the carts and you can pick what you'd like. Everything in the carts were constantly getting refilled which was nice. Even at almost full capacity, customers are mindful having low level conversations, so the lunch buzz is comfortable and laid back compared to HK Cafe. Very limited alcohol list. I ordered three items for dinner and while two came out 20 minutes after ordering, the third came out right before I left. I haven't had any issues with cleanliness here, they also have very grand bathrooms. I would come back for dim sum if I don't plan on eating a lot. I usually come here on special occasions like holidays, and the dim sum is always great if you get there early enough! If you come for dinner on a busy day, they might have already stopped dim sum service and started taking orders off the menu only. Off of their menu, I really like their fried vegetable dishes and their beef chow fun. They do salt their food a bit lightly for my taste and seem to depend moreso on aromatics, but adding the chili oil and soy sauce at the table makes it just right. I hope to try out their congee and mapo tofu eventually! Even though it gets a bit hectic on holidays, the servers are aways attentive and look to be doing their best. My family loves coming here. This is our go to dim sum place since it's the only decent dim sum in town now. The food is always pretty decent and authentic. The only complaint I have, is how they don't seem to be very consistent with some dishes. My nephew is allergic to eggs. We usually order a beef chow fun whenever we go, since that's his favorite dish. The first time we ordered it, there was eggs in it. So we then ordered a 2nd one and asked for no eggs. We went back a few weeks after that, and again ordered a "beef chow fun without eggs". The lady laughed at us and told us "beef chow fun isn't made with eggs" and made it seem like we didn't know what a traditional Chinese dish is like because we're young. We just brushed it off and explained we wanted to be extra cautious. We figured they changed their recipe and no longer put eggs in the chow fun. We've ordered chow fun a few more times after that and no eggs came with it. But recently, we ordered it again, not telling them to hold the eggs because "beef chow fun isn't made with eggs", and we got one with eggs. I just find it odd because no other places I've been to add egg to their beef chow fun. read more
