I texted Terry and he came by the next morning (properly masked up, hooray!) and picked up my laptop. He texted me a question as he was working on it to make sure he wasn't removing a program that I actually use, and then dropped it off just a few hours later. It's now super-speedy - it feels like I have a new computer. Among other things, he removed a program that I had that I thought was helping maintain my Mac, but he told me it was slowing things down massively. Now that I know that laptop cleaning is a thing, I'll probably do this every year. It's a small investment and will save me a ton of money down the road. I had taken the back off a while ago to see if I could figure anything out on my own and noticed it looked like the jack could be replaced without sauldering. So I took it there today and he looked at it real quickly and told me I had half the job done and explained what I could do to replace the jack, or possibly replacing the power cord itself or possibly pinching in the tabs on the jack to make a better connection. I chose the latter option and it's charging fine now. He was super heplful! I'll think I'll take my wife's computer to him next - for some diagnostic help.
