Our Dexter recently developed heart failure. We tried to better his condition with medications but after a short period, we realized that was not what was best for him. As hard as it was, we reached out to Jessica to schedule a home visit. She was kind and loving with him and made his transition painless. She treated him with respect and allowed our other dogs, Jackson and Bella to sit with him until the end. As she wrapped Dexter in a blanket to take him for cremation, I realized she not only helps transition our pets, but she also helps transition the families left behind. Dr. Wilcox is the best lameness exam expert around! He was able to diagnose my gelding Tanner, and my mare Peyton. I had a hard time locating the reason why Peyton was lame, and Dr. Wilcox & Dr. Stokes were able to locate the issues. They helped me get her out of pain for the first time in her life, and Dr. Stokes was able to help me with Peyton's hormones. Peyton finally became the sweet mare I knew she could be. Both Drs took stellar care of my 3 horses for over four years. I trust them explicitly, and don't trust very many people with my horses. My review is for Dr. Jessica Stokes as I have not met Dr. Wilcox yet. I run TheraPony, a horse rescue and sanctuary in the area. We have a dozen horses at present time, most with multitude of health issues. We met Dr. Stokes by chance when I needed blood pulled for one of the horses and my regular vet was unavailable. Not only did she take the sample, but she also took extra time to get to know the horse and her condition and to meet the rest of the horses. One of our horses who is very untrusting due to his previous abuse came up to her and took cookies from her hand, a big deal for him. While not completely sold on the first visit (I have trust issues with vets), Dr. Stokes called back a few days later to check on the horse she drew blood on. We got to talking and I told her about a horse I saw the day before who was being surrendered to the rescue due to very severe infection. When she found out the severity of the infection, she rearranged her schedule to be here the next morning. She has been treating Annie Mae and the rest of TheraPony horses ever since. Last weekend, Annie Mae coliced in the middle of the night. I felt horrible calling at 2:15am on a Sunday morning. Dr. Stokes showed up with a smile on her face like it was our regularly scheduled mid-day appointment. She once again saved Annie Mae's life. After leaving us at 4:45ish in the morning, she check in on us at 8 to make sure the horse and I were both ok. Then she showed up for our scheduled appointment at 1pm and cheerfully explained and demonstrated dentals to a group of kids. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Stokes. She truly loves what she does and is extremely good at it. She is kind and gentle with the horses. She is knowledgable and caring. Her bedside manner is A+ She is intuitive with the animals and the owners. She checks in to make sure the treatment is going well. I called exact equine for a client of mine because her phones were down. Her horse was very lame on the back right but not an emergency, when I called I stated it was not an emergency and they was told they could come at 9pm, because that sounded like an after hours kind of thing, I asked again if it would be considered an emergency visit, to which I was told no. They called back later saying they could move the appointment to 3. After the vet came, and went, my client texted me very upset, that max showed up with a bad, rude attitude, and kicked her horse as hard as he could 6 times when looking at the leg, because the horse pulled away due to pain response. He also instructed her to punch him in the face, if he "got out of line again" on top of all that, she was charged an emergency fee. In my opinion this is completely unprofessional and animal abuse. And I have worked with vets in a number of states and at fancy high-end equine sports medicine practices and I felt I was in the most capable hands with Dr. Wilcox and Stokes. Great vet, always gives my horses competent care and saved the life of my pony that was going to have to be euthanized. She had a flipped colon and he saved her by hanging her upside down, using our tractor, and manipulating her colon back into place. Truly amazing thing to see! It started so well and then went down hill in one visit. Dr. Max came unto my property without an appointment on my part and not only (so he says) examined my horse and then elected to block his front feet (w/o my permission) left and chose not to inform me of the findings. After several calls I finally got him on the line and when I did not agree with his diagnosis he became belligerent and chose to hang up on me. Where were his people skills ? customer relation and manners. His diagnosis was totally off. I have since had my horse examined by someone else. I then informed him that I would not pay his invoice and that should he send me another one I would report him to the Veterinary Association as well as to the Chiropractic Board. Guess what I did not get another invoice but again without my permission he went and debited the amount billed from my debit card and falsified the expiration date. Please make sure you pay by check and do not give him your Debit card #. This outfit may be good for shots and minor problems but not for specialized treatments nor Chiropractic work. I do not believe that Max Wilcox has a Chiropractic license. I was aware that they horsey business was full of crooks well here is the example. Beware !!!!! read more

I couldn't find a page just for Exact Equine or just for Jessica Stokes so my review will be for Dr. Stokes. Dr. Stokes has been my Equine vet for approximately 3 and a half years now. The very first time I met Dr. Stokes was at a facility clinic. I thought my horse and I would be nervous because I really didn't know how my horse was going to act getting the work done he needed (teeth float, whole body adjustment and sheath cleaning) because I had not yet owned him long enough to have experienced that need up to that point. She reassured me that she takes things slow with horses and I immediately felt at ease. I assumed just because it was a clinic and the prices were dirt cheap, that the services would be rushed. My ASSumption couldn't have been further from the truth! Dr. Stokes is insanely intelligent and has an incredible way with horses and humans that I have never experienced in any of my Equine vets in the 18+ years I have been taking my horses to/have had my horses seen by, equine vets. She even beats the experience I had at a top notch rated number 1 facility with state of the art equipment. Jessica explains everything she does with your horse and instead of just healing your horse, takes the time to show you how to do the things she is doing on your own. She taught me how to pull blood and give IV antibiotics because my gelding became deathly Ill at a later date. She watched me and waited with me until I was sure I was comfortable enough to do it on my own. Wow. That is such a nice thing to do as a vet! Many are so very rushed and even have cold bedside manner. Jessica taught me how to look at saddles to see if the trees are twisted or broken and how exactly one should go about properly fitting a saddle to a horse. I could go on and on about all of the amazing things I have been taught by Jessica and how she has saved my horse's life on more than one occasion but I would end up writing a book. My favorite thing about Jessica is her no-nonsense approach to treatment. She does not over diagnose or spend your money haphazardly. I have on more than one occasion picked up the phone to have Dr. Stokes on the other line just checking in on my horses to see how they are after a visit or even after a concerned call from me that ended up not being serious. I wish ALL vets had to go through the same life experiences as Dr. Stokes because the world of suffering for animals would vastly reduce. I am hooked and a firm believer Dr. Jessica Stokes is the best Equine vet in the entire industry. read more

Without a doubt the best veterinary practice in the San Diego area and possibly all of Southern Ca. Dr Wilcox has been instrumental in keeping our little herd sound and moving. He is the most accurate vet at diagnosing lameness that I have ever met. I have over 40 years in the horse industry spanning from hunter jumpers in my youth to the race track and working with performance horse trainers. His prescriptions for shoeing changes worked for all my horses when we found a farrier that was on board. Our ex race horse is moving like I never thought possible! Dr. Max Wilcox, in my opinion is not a good vet. His diagnostic skills are weak, took him forever to make up his mind about where the lameness was, and then he misdiagnosed some "phantom " hind limb lameness instead of the front limb soreness. Never thought to block the foot to rule it out. His suggested treatment caused this horse owner to sincerely regret ever having hired him. My horse got laminitis from a steroid injection that he gave him. Too strong of a steroid, in too high of a dose. After which I spent a bundle with my regular vet to treat my horse after the Wilcox bungle. I would never hire him ever again. read more

It was a cold rainy night in February, 2012, and I received a call that my horse was down. Dr. Jessica Stokes answered the call and it was determined that my thoroughbred had broken his upper jaw. Dr. Jessica called her partner Dr. Max Wilcox and he arrived within minutes to perform the necessary surgery (work) to stablize my horse and set his jaw. Two vets working on your horse at 9:00 at night in the mud and rain. Either one or the other stopped by the facility at least three/four times in the next week checking for infection and the comfort of the horse. I was not charged for two doctors, and the emergency invoice was more than reasonable. I have seen both of these doctors go above and beyond what would be expected of either one of them and would recommend Exact Equine to anyone. read more

I don't know how anyone can have a bad experience honestly. Dr. Jessica Stokes and Dr. Max Wilcox both have been incredible! To judge me as a consumer let me tell you I have worked in the medical field for 11 years so I am very judgmental about doctors because I have seen great ones and I have seen malpractice, that has made me critical and cynical!! Anyway... my horse is a Fox Trotter that was shod like a quarter horse and therefore was lame for 3 years and no one (farrier and vet a like) knew why, they would say well lets wait and see (like three years wasn't enough) others like the vet would say it might be arthritis (at age 3) or navicular disease. Dr. Max Wilcox examined him and that day he was shod CORRECTLY he never went lame again with very minimal cost compared to others quotes for other more popular diagnosis.!!! no matter how many hours of hard sweaty workouts he had. then I brought him again 2 years later for a general check up to see if he needed chiropractic or teeth done and he did a general physical (free) and said he is looking great! no money exchanged!!! Recently 5 years later I brought same horse and now he has other issues like his teeth need to be done and Dr. Jessica Stokes helped him, she explained in GREAT DETAIL every move and info on all she was doing while floating his teeth, why he was due, and what to look for in the future plus his sheath. I also brought a spirited thoroughbred and she was very patient with her and explained all my concerns in great detail that the majority of my concerns where normal and she was healthy, didn't charge for a general physical or for answering my tons of questions and was VERY patient in explaining great detail everything I wanted to know. She had incredible knowledge and solution for my horse CRIBBING! and cured him. As a judgmental consumer because of my past experiences and cynical person I will say these two Veterinarians are incredible for lameness and general stuff! not only in horse health and care but in customer service and genuinely personable and concerned. read more

I have been around horses for my entire life, and have worked with multiple top trainers and it is highly important that my horses get the best care. I have been using Exact Equine as my vets for over three years now and they have done nothing but provide the best care that they can for all of my animals.
