I have spent many a birthday or anniversary at a local Grocery Outlet or favorite Health Food Store, Forget Disneyland - grocery stores are where the real magic happens. And Rusticana is one such blessed spot. We had just arrived in Canada in the late evening and I wasn't having much luck at two bigger grocery stores in Calgary. There was a staleness about them. They didn't feel right. And so driving through Canmore - my husband suggested I see if there were any grocery/health stores open in the area. It was nearing 11 in the evening and most of the area was quiet. I was surprised to see that there was indeed one darling store open - Rusticana. I had a good feeling - the moment I read its name aloud - and proudly announced to my husband: "This is the one." We pulled up and I ran out. It was close to their closing time, but the kind man behind the counter smiled at me and encouraged me to look around. The place was beautifully curated with magical grocery gems everywhere. I kept on ooohing and aahing down every aisle. There was non dairy milk, specialty fresh meats, freshly baked goods, and soooo much more. There was so much goodness packed into such a cute space. I could have spent hours in Rusticana - but I quickly grabbed some fun finds and made my way to the counter to pay. Pure happiness beamed from my face. We went to many other grocery stores throughout our time in Canada - but none spoke to me quite the same way that lovely Rusticana did. If you're in the area and looking for a treat - stop in here. The rest were art, crafts, ceramics, small business people, and food vendors. Everything was very nice and clean, there is a good amount of free parking (a rarity in Canmore), and the vendors and the customers were very friendly and pleasant. A lot of home made food such as the apple strudel, cake bakery, Canadian waffles, crepes, bison burger. There also veggies and fruit vendor after all this is a farmer market. There is art vendors also displayed their best product. Overall this is beautiful backdrop with mountain range. The market is nice to walk on since the weather is really nice at this time of year. They had entire walls of vinegars and oils to sample + little toast pieces and popcorn to try with everything. I had no idea coffee, lychee, or rosé balsamic vinegar even existed. Next to each item, there was a handout describing the flavors and uses + a recipe-- super neat! I loved how you could buy cute mini-bottles or the larger bottle size. Extra points for having self-serve water available, hand sanitizer, and no one trying to pressure you into buying anything! The staff member at checkout was friendly and wrapped my goods in paper, but you can ask for bubble wrap if needed and store packaging if you buy a set of 6! We basically tried all the olive oils, the white vinegars and black vinegars. I didn't know that the vinegars could be added to soda water to make light summer refreshments! Each of these also had a recipe card to refer to so you get inspiration too. Staff was really helpful and probably quite amused by how excited we were to learn and try all the different products. It was clean and a comfortable environment so we didn't feel rushed or pressured to buy anything, but we genuinely wanted to bring home so many flavours and different types of products.
