Her hands are on another level of gentle. Lastly Natasha straightened and trimmed my hair. my hair felt so soft and looked so full, I almost teared up. Over price for a basement green room experience. I waited for the stylist and I was not offered a reduction in price. However, if you are late they charge you. $225 for a wash , conditioner, blow out natural and straighten. That's a $100 increase from the last time I visited the shop for the EXACT same treatments. I definitely will not return. I should have followed the other clients to stop going... ONE AND DONE . If you have money to give away and want to pretend like you are at a high end salon... I would give 10 stars if I could, it was that good!! They were able to take me in on short notice, I didn't have a wait when I arrived, the actual location is easy to get to, it's beautiful spa-like. Front Desk was polite and offered water, it's nice customer service. What takes the cake is how the stylist Stacy was able to help me like I have been unable to find anywhere! I was so tired of having to rock my natural 'fro that seems to stay dry. She told me about a really great deep conditioner which I bought, and did wondrous things with my hair while maintaining it's health. If my hair was an actual person it would be giving her a standing ovation!! So here it is, a week later and I am still enjoying the benefits of her magical hands on my hair. I made an appointment for a trim. I told the receptionist to make the appointment with someone who is good with trims. I looked at the salon's work on IG and was confident that they would be able to trim my hair with no problem. When the person actually styling my hair asked what service I would be getting, I said a trim. She said Ok, you're here for a cut. I corrected her and said no, a trim. When I sat in her chair to discuss the process, I told her I was growing my hair out and I was not a fan of layers. I liked the current shape of my hair, so there was no need to change it except for just needed a little more off of the back. I was very clear which is why I am baffled as to why the stylist cut 2.5 inches off of my hair all over and I left with more layers than I came in with. A trim is a quarter to half an inch at most. On top of that , she changed the shape to something I hate. Everyone isn't in to big, loud hair. There is nothing worse than a stylist that basically says F what you want, they're going to give you the style they want, even if they know you won't like it or doesn't know how to do something, but takes your money anyway. A bad cut is the ultimate salon no, no. Only a lot of time can correct it. I would have been better of waiting for an appointment with JHB_Studios or trimming my hair myself. Sigh. Naturals beware. PLEASE READ Hair background: Natural since birth without any form of chemical process done to my hair ever. No weaves, no color, and rarely heat. Simple wash and go with natural sometimes homemade products. I came here to have my hair done because I was apart of a bridal party and this is what the bride wanted. At first I was impressed I loved the ambiance and professionalism and I love to see my people prosper. When i arrived to the salon my should blade length(mid scapula) hair was already washed, deep conditioned, and pressed from a trusted stylist that I use occasionally for straightening and i have never had an issue. The only thing the stylist (who happened to be the owner) had to do was style what the bride requesting which was a low side bun that required a piece because of how big she wanted it to be. I sat down in the chair and she starts killing me with hair pins, literal stabbing. I grimace because of the discomfort and I politely request for the pins to be moved or to loosen something because it was so uncomfortable. After about my third request you could see the frustration and annoyance and she very unpolitely told me that I need to figure something else out as I was making her cut into the times of other customers. (Although she only spent about 10 minutes on my hair bc all she had to do was style it.) At this point we do a style with my own hair as it was long and full enough to do so. What I realize now that I did not understand then was that every time she took the ponytail out to reposition the pins she would apply hair rules some kind of spray and go over it with the flat iron. I should have realized that sizzling noises should only be made when one is searing a steak! I walk out of the salon and run across the street to catch a cab and hair pins fly everywhere. It looked like a fight in a beauty supply store. The wedding was the following morning she had to redo it bc of the poor job that was done the day prior. The same steak searing process. I wish I knew. Lord I wish I knew. Fast forward 2 weeks later... I wash my hair and look in the mirror and do not recognize my hair. It was lifeless with no curl pattern. Imagine going from a mix of 3b to 3 hair to a 1-2a. Google it and you will see what I mean. I was horrifed! My hair was completely damaged from root to end. With parts that completely broke off, especially in the front. I couldn't do a bun bc I looked like Alfafa's negro sister. I cried and was so angry because this ugly damaged hair was not mine. I could no longer rock my fro..... ugh the disappointment. I ended up cutting off all of my hair, I went to a barber. And it is growing back beautifully. I will never set foot into this salon EVERRRRR AGAIN. I would actually prefer to eat habanero marinated glass, followed by 3 year old kitty litter. I understand that my incident may be isolated, and I pray that it is. Overall I am thankful for the experience, it built my character a bit and I think I became a little bit stronger. Realizing that certain things in life do not require the fuss. Hair being one of them. Ppl lose much more important things everyday such as life, health, family. Life is too short. I'm still on the hunt for a home salon and I wasn't impressed by Evolution. I will concede that the facilities were high quality but they didn't make me feel comfortable. They took a history of my hair as if they were truly concerned about my hair regimen but beyond that they didn't give me any advice as to how to improve the quality of my hair, the stylist was more concerned about upselling me on products. The receptionist didn't even bother to appear to be happy to be there, she was visibly apathetic. I won't be going back and it's not because they burned my hair or took too much off when I asked for a trim but it's because I was extremely underwhelmed and turned off by their weak attempt to be a high end caliber salon. read more

Their prices are too high. I might as well go to a salon in the city. The stylist in the city is quicker and more efficient. I can actually schedule another appointment on the day that I get my hair done. They are also cheaper and I can get a hand massage and a beverage that are complimentary. Evolution's stylists do know how to style hair. However, they are too slow for the high prices they charge. If I am paying top price then value my time and don't have me sitting there all day. I cannot make any other appointments when I go to this salon. I don't know if they will be slow or fast. They are usually slow. I think they should gossip less and focus on doing the hair as quickly and efficiently as possible. The person who takes your money also seems embarrassed that the prices are so high. I've been going to this salon for quite sometime now. My first experience was great, however, it seems that in the past year the stylists have been trying to squeeze more clients in at the same time and quality & customer service have noticeably suffered. I've also referred numerous friends to this salon & all of them have stopped going due bad customer service experiences. I have recently stopped going due to a rude experience with the front desk clerk. Wish the salon could've lived up to the original fabulousness I felt but everything can't last forever. Apparently, they do well, and have a following; But I am not blessed with the ability to have unplanned expenses. After researching salons for a few weeks, trying to find a great place to care for my hair & to help me do so as well, I made my first visit to Evolution / The Green Room yesterday, and I am quite impressed! I love the clean, relaxed atmosphere. Henry is a great stylist, with a great personality. I walked in with really dry hair, and walk out with shiny, bouncing, flowing hair. I received a wash, blow, and trim, as well as a moisture and protein combo treatment... it all smelled delightful and has my hair looking and feeling great! The only reason I haven't yet booked another appointment at Evolution is because, as a wife and mom who handles her family's budgeting, and has to make sound financial decisions, trips to Evolution have to be well planned out because it costs a pretty penny. I, however, won't complain about it because what can be even more expensive is not caring for oneself... that kinda damage cannot be quantified in dollars... so I am making a conscious effort to care for myself. Not just anyone should touch my hair... there's nothing wrong with paying for quality hair care. From what I observed, witnessed, and experienced at Evolution yesterday, it seems that, there, you get what you pay for. For us women, especially wives and mothers, we tend to constantly put taking care of ourselves on the back burner, which is not healthy... although we shouldn't be consumed by caring for ourselves, it's important to make quality time for self, and I think Evolution is a great place to do so because it is so relaxed, not loud and gossipy, and you're not overwhelmed by fumes from heavy hairsprays, etc. like at other salons. At Evolution / The Green Room, there is a professional, yet relaxed environment - a great balance - the way I like it :-) (Sigh) The prices at Evolution don't fit into my family's budget right now, but, clearly, I like them. I had to downgrade my beloved Evolution only because the last time I went to the hair salon I had a color disaster. Don't get me wrong, the hair color was BEAUTIFUL, but as a woman working in corporate America, it was just too much and i told my stylist that before we started the application. So she applied the color, washed it out, styled my hair beautifully and while I was in the salon, I thought this is a little bright but it's not that bad. But when I got home and actually into natural light, I realized that it was way too red for me to go to any type of corporate setting and not be made a fool. I think stylists have to be able to read their clients, as well as know what I mean when I say "I work in corporate America, so it can't be anything too drastic". I have been to Evolution about four times. Each for a wash, and style. I think once I had a deep condition. The atmosphere is great. Very chic, clean, and professional. I loved how my hair came out even though they would straight iron (which I am not used to). I figured, hey if everyone else here can handle it and have beautiful hair so can I right? Nope, after my fourth visit I began to notice and lot of hair falling out when I combed it. My hair started to break off. I have to chalk it up to the straight iron. Regardless of how nice my hair came out it was becoming weak and brittle. So now I just get my wash and set from my Dominicanas and my hair is looking pretty good. For a lot cheaper. This is just my experience...I may go back for a mani or pedi! read more

My second time visiting Evolution and I love it! The prices are very high but you get what you pay for! Natasha, the owner, did a great job on my hair and talked to me before doing anything. The ENTIRE staff is very knowledgeable and won't steer you in the wrong direction and won't do things to your hair that isn't necessary. If your looking for a salon that specializes in HAIR CARE and not just a hair style then this is the place to go! Expect to pay anywhere from $100 - $165. I'd passed by once before but wasn't looking to get anything done. This time around, I was feeling like my hair was all sorts of uneven due to me pulling my hair out randomly and shying away from trims/cuts due to an unfortunate cut I received a few years ago. Anyway, I figured I'd take a chance and called earlier in the day to inquire about walk-ins. The lady on the phone was extremely polite and said it wouldn't be a problem. Ambiance: The minute you walk in, you're met with a well thought out salon design, neat stations, soothing smells (no hints of fried hair wafting in from the back room or sounds of sizzling flat irons) and R&B. I was greeted pleasantly by the receptionist who turned out to be Natasha, the owner (major points for humility and disposition). Service: I let her know I was interested in something highly moisturizing and getting a trim, cut, and shaving the sides. She had me fill out a short questionnaire about my hair so they can establish a profile for future visits. She told me Trenton would be working with me and we started right away. He assessed my hair and started in with a shea butter moisturizing deep conditioner and a scalp massage the likes of which I hadn't experienced in years. In order to protect the hair from unnecessary heat damage, they triple wrap it for protection. I could feel my hair springing to life after that. Then came cutting time and we agreed that I needed my fro evened out all around and my sides shaved down. After blowing out my hair, Trenton explained certain sections were more damaged than others and would have to be cut, which I anticipated. He was very receptive to the needs of his clients and stopped to explain his method along the way. I hadn't seen my fro this even ... ever. As for the sides, I knew I wanted them shaved all the way down to a close crop and that's exactly what I got. He finished off with two strand flat twists which I planned on taking out the next day but they were actually pretty cute so I rocked it as a style. Overall: The homey atmosphere coupled with the willingness of Trenton and Natasha to accommodate and actually listen to what I wanted was a major selling point. Yes, the salon is pricey but what you get is staff that is open and honest about what they're using and why. They don't keep secrets from you in attempt to keep you coming back and they are very much open to answering any and all questions you have about your hair since it's YOUR HAIR. Follow-up wash: When I washed my hair at home, I saw and felt my very tightly coiled hair spring to life. There was definition I had not seen in it since the very first time I cut my perm off. Both men and women have complimented me on the 'bold' cut. I can't stop touching my hair and I'm looking forward to my next visit. If you have some extra coin and need to revitalize your hair, you'd be amazed at what a deep conditioner can do. read more

Yesterday was my second visit. I returned because I absolutely loved the ambiance and the work was very well done. However, the pricing was a point of contention. The first time was expensive $170 - for a relaxer, trim (split ends) and two tracks but I was willing to pay for good work. The bill for the second visit was beyond my wildest dreams - $245 - cash. Admittedly, my stylist - Stacey- did an excellent job, but this pricing is not sustainable seeing as I need to have my hair done on a monthly basis within a budget. As much as it galls me, I have to find a more affordable alternative. Lastly, as price seems to be a common denominator among reviewers, perhaps it is time this salon reviewed its pricing and engaged with its clients to come up with a reasonable compromise. read more

I was searching for a salon in Brooklyn that catered to different types of hair & I think I found one that fits the bill! I was honestly extremely nervous to go in the first place as I haven't been to salon in many, many years due to a really bad previous experience at another salon. Here, I was pleasantly surprised! My stylist, Tiffany, assessed the awful damage that was done to my hair. She managed to cut off all the dead ends but retain a length that I liked. Given the frizzy, brittle state of my hair coming in, I wasn't expecting a miracle, but the way she flat ironed my hair-- I'm shocked the hair coming out of my head is mine! I got a classy layered shoulder-length cut. Very few products were used on my hair, which left it feeling so light and bouncy. Tiffany was definitely paying attention to my hair more than anything else. Side conversations in general by all stylists were minimal She also told me which products to use & what to do to keep the look. I got a manicure too, which looks nice. It's not amazing (it took a long time to dry and by the time I left there were already lumps in it.) but the manicurist was really knowledgeable about nail & skin health. For a manicure, cut & style I was out in just under 3 hours. I was shocked that the hair itself was just $85 (not including 20% off for a 1st time customer--which made it even less). Not too bad. I'll probably return again before the holidays --this coming from someone who NEVER goes to a salon. read more

I've been going to Evolution for a pedi from the very posh Missoni. She knows her feet well! I finally got my hair done-wash, press, cut, scalp treatment. (I live ridiculously close so I have no excuse why I haven't been sooner) I am funny about salons. I need a comfy, cozy environment where I feel comfortable chit-chatting and not gossiping. Evolution fulfills that. I want my stylist to be super attentive and super friendly and Henry fulfilled that. Even though he just started a month or two ago it was as like he's been there for a long time. He's professional, very experienced and really cares about hair care and not just styling. My hair turned out beautiful as expected, although I probably should have waited until the humidity died down a little so it could have lasted. The scalp treatment was much needed for me. I think Natasha (the owner) does a wonderful job running the salon. I love coming there and I would go anywhere else to get my hair done. Evolution is a great asset to the neighborhood. read more

While evolution was very clean and the staff were professional, I would not recommend the stylist. My usual stylist Mariko at Dlala on Ave A/10th Street was unavailable. Thus, I thought I would go to a local stylist, I brought my own hair products which they did not use, That was a mistake. I merely wanted a blow out and flat iron, When my husband came to pick me up, the reaction on his face was priceless. Fortunately, I had my hair done during the middle of the heat wave, The next day I was attending a wedding and the style didn't last, My flat ironed hair could thereafter , put in a French roll and I looked normal. This was my top pick for a new salon as I've just moved to the area. The place is immaculate and all of the staff are top notch. Everyone is well-mannered, friendly and profesional. My stylist, Sharntai, is a God send!!! She saved my badly damaged hair and gave me a cut & color that is out of this world. It completely fits my personality & she was able to size me up immediately...just like any amazing hair stylist should. Sharntai also taught me how to care for my hair on my own...a skill I was greatly lacking. This place isn't cheap, but nor is it overly expensive. You get what you pay for---great service. Be prepared to be pampered and have an amazing time. I have very thick natural hair and it was hard to find a place to cut, treat and style, but this place did it all. In my quest for a new stylist and hair care technician, I Googled for Salons that specialized in short hair cuts; I came upon Evolution. I visited their site and read up on the bios of the stylist and the shop; I was impressed so I quickly call to schedule an early Friday morning appointment. I made sure that I was on time as I to received confirmation emails regarding their strict cancellation policy and late fees. I walked in and was immediately impressed with the decor and the friendliness of the staff. My stylist Shantai was very pleasant and respectful of my time and hers, I enjoyed the ambiance so much that I decided to take advantage of their spa services and got a mani. Missoni was very pleasant, funny and helpful. t I think I may have found my new hair care provider. The only reason that I didn't give 5 stars was because I know that it is my first time at the shop and their may and have been a bit of overcompensation going on and because they are already a bit pricey and try to sell you more. read more

Great salon. They do not keep you waiting--be on time. Everyone in the salon KNOWS great hair care. I have yet to see anyone just sit and wait. Someone is always taking care of you. The staff works hard to make you comfortable. BTW, not just for adults. I've taken my daughter for a visit (special occasion). She had her natural hair done. Wash, treatment, trim, blow and flat iron. Gorgeous movement, body and great health for three weeks straight. No shriveling, even with the humid days of Sept, nor a little sprinkle of rain. I had an excellent experience at Evolution - The Green Room salon. Five stars from the moment you walk in the door. Lovely neo-soul track playing softly on the speakers. Cell phone policy posted discretely on the wall. And the offer of tea or any other beverage of choice (there is also a super-cute bakery a few doors down where I picked up an almond croissant to kick off my day of beauty) all contributed to a pleasant experience. My stylist Shawntay - who looks like my sister, so that helped with the comfort level, took a good 15 minutes at the beginning of my appointment to understand exactly what I wanted and totally delivered. I love walking out of the salon with that bounce in your step knowing that your hair looks GOOD. Definitely pricey as everyone else has mentioned, but you know what? I loved the salon! I got an appointment quickly, and I was very pleased with my blowout/flatiron/trim on my naturally kinky-curly (black) hair. My hair stayed straight for weeks! The salon was very clean and pleasant, and all beauticians were friendly. I could tell that the staff is well versed on keeping hair healthy, and my stylist did a little hair history questionnaire before starting the style. I can't remember her name, but she was great. Maybe it started with a J? The only downfall was that it was EXPENSIVE. Definitely the most expensive salon experience of my life. It was about $150 for my service. When I was recommended to Evolution I was kind of skeptical because I was warned about the price. I still made an appointment because I was tired of going to salons in Brooklyn that opened when they felt like it and the employees show up two hours later. She asked me what was my hair routine I told her and she immediately told me where I was going wrong. I have never had a worse pedicure in my entire life. I've got sensitive feet and I'm au natural so from the advertisements and their website I was totally misled. NOTHING about this place is natural (all I paid attention to was the pedicure) except the stand of nail polish you have to pay extra for. The products they use are far from natural and the woman doing my feet was well aware that I don't want chemicals involved when she put some callus remover on that burned my feet and made me freak out to get the stuff off. It was one calamity after the next and the woman was the freakiest weird vibe I've ever had work on my extremities. That said, I left and 2 hours later put sandals on and the entire toe smudged- 2 hours later. So I called them and -oh by the way I literally left there crying- so I called and said the whole thing smudged and bla bla.... they were so incredibly rude and I will warn you never to get a pedicure at this place. read more

Please note that I am only writing about about my manicure exprience.... I have to say that the entire salon is great. Upon my first time there I noticed that all of the stylists know what they are doing - everyone walks out beautiful!! However, I just could not let it go without saying that the manucurist was not very nice. She did not match the rest of the salon. My nails came out pretty good. But the polish smudged about an hour after I got them done..My main issue with her was her attitude. She was very rude and not very welcoming. It was not consistent with the rest of the salon. The stylist/owner was passive aggressively rude. She did not greet me with a smile or hello at the door. She seemed angry that I rang the doorbell twice. I rang twice because I was wearing gloves and I was not sure the bell was engaged. She spoke in an unfriendly tone. She asked me to remove my shoes. I was reluctant because I wasn't wearing socks and did not wish to be barefoot in a space where traditionally you would not expect to remove your shoes. I applaud the effort to keep the space clean, but she should have offered protective and disposable shoe covers. She rudely informed me I could cancel if I was uncomfortable. It was an unpleasant experience overall and I found the stylist to be unprofessional. I would not recommend this business or return based on my experience. I was also unhappy with the service, but I take responsibility for staying and paying for a service that was offered with every indication that the outcome would be unsatisfactory. I am writing this review because I'm hopeful this feedback will bring about a change. I hope other women, especially women of color are not treated with the same disrespect I was treated with. I've been to Evolution a few times over the past four years, so this review is for my overall experience. I really want to support black-owned business especially in this neighborhood, which is why I've been back more than I should have. I've received hair services from Natasha (owner) and the nice stylist who has the chair to Nathan's left. While the attentiveness is decent and trims/haircuts are nice, the prices are outrageous & styling is just "ok". Two scenarios that gives this review 2 stars: 1. For my second to last appointment, I was emailed a coupon from the salon to apply for services rendered during my birthday month. As my birthday falls during the last few days of the month, I made a hair appointment for the follwing week. I told the receptionist about the coupon to apply... she said no problem! Fast forward to getting a wash, deep condition and style. Style was ehh, but whatever - I had clean hair, a DC, and a coupon. Went to pay, and Natasha told me that my coupon wasn't valid since my birthday month was technically last week. Explained my situation, explained that I just received the coupon since my birthday was literally a few days ago, also got a "no problem!" from the receptionist when I booked the appointment. All I got was a "sorry" from Natasha. So Evolution takes technicality over customer service (for a repeat customer for that matter). I paid and tipped, but the situation left me a bit salty. 2. After almost a year, I decided to go back. The other lady that I usually go to wasn't available due to an emergency, so Natasha does my hair. No problem. Wash, trim, DC, and blowdry. No styling. It was late in the evening, and I prefer to do style my own hair. After the DC, Natasha pulls out this new natural hair styling product that she'd like to try out on my hair, since I "have the ideal texture for it". She tells me she never used it before, and would like to determine whether she should invest in it for the salon. I thought to myself, its just product, its natural, it smells lovely, why not? I told her sure, go ahead and experiment. Hair comes out looking decent and smelling delicious. So now its time to pay and you already know where this is headed. Homegirl charges me an additional $25 for the style. Ummm... what?? I told her that I thought she was just "trying it out on my hair". She said its still styling. This is my fault for not confirming the free service prior to her "experimenting". I was fooled twice, so shame on me for going back. I left Evolution being overcharged AGAIN and feeling swindled, with a head of hair smelling so sweet. Word of advice if you really want the "Evolution experience" - confirm your quote for services PRIOR to sitting in Natasha's chair. Confirm any coupon, Groupon or discounts, and expiration dates with your stylist. You can easily spend way more than you anticipated to shell out on top of the salon's high prices. Pass on this one if you have anything other than black hair. I was basically asked to leave because my stylist didn't know what to do with me. But somehow I was still coerced into paying a 25 dollar consulting fee with my hair half processed and vaseline all over my scalp. Thumbs down. I have gotten the same treatment done every year before at this Dominican salon in the city I used to live in. But my stylist Shantay had only done it her way, and was reluctant to change. Even though I am white and so my hair responds differently to chemicals. It seemed like she was making up "her way" as she went along. We did a test portion on a bottom section of my hair. When she rinsed it out, water and chemicals poured down my back. She tried to blame it on the way that I was sitting until a co-worker came over and quietly fixed the height of the sink or something. I'm not really sure what was wrong because I was preoccupied with being soaked. Her co-worker also sweetly towelled me down. After that, I was sort of over the whole process. When the test section turned out looking awful, and she blamed that on my "overprocessed" hair. She gave up on me without having finished all of the necessary steps to neutralize my hair. Her boss sent her back after quizzing her on everything she had done, so I didn't get sent home with a burning scalp full of chemicals. I had to ask the receptionist for a napkin to wipe off all of the vaseline she has applied around my scalp to protect it. Then I paid 25 dollars for the worst salon experience ever. read more

The salon was buzzing with activity inside on a Friday afternoon & I thought I'd stop in and ask about a barber cut. Once before (prior to my big chop) a stylist told me they were pretty good. The door was locked so I rang the bell. Two of the stylists looked at me. The front desk attendant looked at me, then walked to the back of the salon instead of opening the door. WTF kind of rotten service is that?!? You only open the door for certain people?? When it was clear they weren't going to open the door, I walked away. Really rude!! Back to Khamit Kinks, I suppose.
