Getting used to an EV didn't take very long. The range anxiety (fear of running out of battery charge) is taking longer to get over, though, especially when you drive a car that only has a maximum of 150 miles per full charge. Add in only 65% charge to start a journey from Orange County to Chino and you get even more anxiety.
I was about to go to the charger at the Carolyn Owens community center because it was only $0.27 per kWh, but it was only a Level 2 charger (220V). To get my 2021 Nissan Leaf to even 80% from less than 50% would take more than 3 hours. Granted, for the same level of charge, 12.270 kWh, the cost would have been $3.31 vs. $7.86 at EVgo, but I didn't have 3 hours to kill.
In addition, my charging session at EVgo was exactly 25 minutes to get me to 90% charge.
The chargers at this location are run down and there is one CCS connector that has electrical tape around it. There are three kiosks, 1 with a dedicated CCS, one with a J-1772 (both the 220V kind), and one 50kW CHAdeMO, Tesla and CCS combo kiosk.
There are two dedicated parking spots with the chargers in the middle. But the right one faces the back side of the chargers and you have to drag the charging cable around the back of the charger to your car. It would have been better if the kiosks were positioned in such a way that no matter which side you parked, you could see it.
The chargers, itself, don't have the most up to date displays and don't show the number of kW that is being delivered and only one of the kiosks has a display screen. The others have small LCD screens.
I'm giving 3 stars because 1) it works, 2) it wasn't crowded, and 3) it's off a major freeway with places to eat and shop nearby. And that's the only reason for the 3 stars.
I could have given less just for the condition of the equipment, but it all worked. I mean, when was the last time you gave a poor review for a gas station because the pump was dirty or had a poor display? You got gas out of it, and went on your way. Just like this charging station, I got my charge and was able to quickly get on my way. That is, after I washed my hands... read more
