The staircase has a sweet lookout over a valley in the Presidio. Unfortunately for me I now I have to use a mobility device, so it's not accessible. Tucked into a driveway in West Clay Park is little slot in the fence, a small stairway, and a tiny path that takes you a hundred feet or so from the neighborhood out to the Presidio sign. Why this easement exists, I know not. Why it's named after Ansel Adams, I know not. But I can confirm it exists, that it's in good shape, and that ya, if you're walking and for some reason you don't want to go down 25th, you can go down 24th and take the foot path and still pop out at El Camino Del Mar. It's well taken care of, gives you a small view of Lobos Creek (or at least where Lobos is theoretically, as the water itself is overgrown with green) and adds some variety in your walk. Plus the homes on West Clay Park are almost all super nice and one even has a bench out front to park your caboose. It's not nothing, and it feels like fun little secret back passageway. Fun!

STUNNING, STUNNING, STUNNING!…read more This stunning French chateau is a must see . . . IF you're lucky enough to be selected from their lottery. Check their official website, there were four weeks displayed and I was fortunate to get the week of my birthday. Wednesdays only from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. We were divided into two groups. The docent led us indoors and we were able to see the "downstairs" (staff area). We proceeded throughout the first floor and saw a variety of rooms: library, dining area, lacquer room, loggia, and ended at the backside of the mansion (must see pool). The docent was knowledgeable, humorous and passionate sharing stores about the owners of the mansion, the history, furnishings and such. I HIGHLY recommend.

It doesn't even have a gift shop for you to buy anything! The downside - the tours are conducted only once a week on Wednesday - and due to high demand, it is by lottery only. Consider yourself winning the jackpot if you got selected to go on the tour. Allen, the Curator personally lead us to a wonderful tour. They are all volunteers, doing it because they love the house and nothing else! Allen is witty, funny, extremely knowledgeable and absolutely the best. The house is beautiful, the grounds are well kept, everything is authentic as if you are going back in time to the turn of the 20th century. Highly recommend visiting this wondeful mansion- absolutely the best value you can ever get from a tour!

It is his private residence and tours are given everyday he is home at 4:00 for $30. George is an notable figure in the area walking his 2 golden retrievers daily. His family has owned the house for years and he hosts charity events, music recitals, movie set cast parties and dinner parties for his friend in his historical home. The decor downstairs is a blast from the past with in tact stenciling, wall paper, and turn off the century original detail. He freely shares so much history and detail of the area, historical development and decline in the area. The wealth of knowledge here is abundant. If you want to be enchanted by really good stories told by an interesting educator and learn historical information of the area, invest time in the 90 minutes with George and the magical stories about the blue painted ladies. It is time really well spent. A GREAT TOUR!

There were some discrepancies in what we were told and what public records will tell you about this house. But overall, this "tour" really is about George's life and his mother's life. He finds a way to find some minute thing in the home that he can then go on a 10-minute story about that has nothing to do with the home. Lots of name dropping. Even showing a video of him on the Austrian Alp that Julie Andrews was on for the Sound of Music. It has absolutely nothing to do with the house. We were ushered through the living room, dining room and kitchen in about a minute and a half. I would have liked more details about those rooms. All of the rooms, for that matter. But this is really a story about George's life while you happen to be in one of the Painted Ladies.

Our tour guide Courtney was awesome, especially for being 103 yrs old! she made it super fun, kept a good pace, answered lots of questions and had the perfect vibes for hosting. Anyways, my ghost story was somewhere between the transition from the 1st and 2nd floors, just after the room with the piano music playing, my cousin and I were chatting not even during one of the guided portions it was literally during the walking part and someone clear as day shushed me right in my ear, but there wasn't anyone next to us, and my cousin didn't hear the aggressive "shhhhhh!!!". It was weird and freaky, but not scary. Super fun experience, great to learn so much about Sarah and her eccentric life - she's my kind of heiress!

I received an immediate confirmation and additional info, like parking, etc., which I appreciated. They also texted a reminder 24 hours ahead. Parking was a breeze and their lot wasn't full, but that may have been due to it being a dreary Sunday in April. The grounds are nice and we enjoyed walking around a bit before our tour. Lots of vibrant flowers and everything appeared well cared for. There was a private wedding party going on, so some of the grounds were blocked off. Our tour guide, Savanna, was very knowledgeable and seemed to really understand and care about the history of the house. The only problem we had was the size of the group we were put in. Most of the rooms are quite small, as are the hallways and staircases. We couldn't all fit in the room to hear her speak so missed some of what she said. There was another group right behind us, and sometimes I could hear that guide better than my own. They offer discounts for seniors and kids 12 and under, but otherwise is a bit pricey at $48 for adults to spend an hour walking through the house. I was disappointed that none of the furnishings are original. It's just been staged with furniture from the approximate period. We also paid for the basement access, and at $13 each (no discounts) it was an absolute waste. Very little to see there. It's just a basement. The cafe was closed while we were there, which was disappointing. Interesting to read about Sarah Winchester and her house, but not really worth the price to visit.

Everyone got their own detector, so they didn't have to share, and they had so much fun seeing what signals they could pick up with their devices. It made it so much more than just a ghost walk. I am so glad we plumped for this. It was a unique birthday experience at a price that was manageable. That it was 2 hours long meant it didn't feel rushed and gave them time to have a real go with the equipment. The guide, Tommy, was great - incredibly knowledgeable, deeply committed to authenticity, and super responsive on email. There were also prizes which made it even more fun for them. We live in the Haight and this is a real gem that has been right under our noses for years! I would thoroughly recommend it, and particularly to parents who are looking for birthday ideas. My daughter is looking forward to going again now on the regular tour (she wants to see the serial killer houses).
