Had a terrible experience at the Low Road (Leeds city) Europcar branch. We have recently moved to Leeds and pre-paid for a car for four days to go to Edinburgh. We walked from home to the branch with the things you would expect to need - credit card, driver's licence, etc. When they ran the credit card, for whatever reason their system couldn't confirm our address. (Why is this even a thing? Surely it's good that random store clerks can't find out your address from your credit card?) But they refused to give us the car without proof of address. They were singularly unhelpful - we had a letter from the bank with us, on letterhead, with our name and address on it, but they wouldn't accept it. We offered to email a utility bill to them that they could print out but they 'were not allowed to'. All we could do was go home, get a bill and walk all the way back there. It was infuriating and wasted about two hours. What a weird policy - I have never experienced this before, even when hiring from Europcar in continental Europe. I have no idea what you would do if you were a tourist in that situation. I told them they need to at least warn people about this policy but they seemed completely disinterested in improving their customer service. I'll be avoiding them if possible in the future. Service from Enterprise at the train station was much better. read more
