I have never been so stunned and outraged at a funeral before. They handled my sister's father-in-law's (FIL) funeral, and I just cannot believe the lack of respect shown for the deceased. The funeral director, we learned, is a third generation owner of the company and the one who ran the show. He opened with what was basically a commercial for his business, stating that we could get a service for less than $3000, and they were the oldest family-owned funeral home in Seguin. The only things said about the FIL were that he had done some carpentry work for the funeral home, that he had served in the military (but no mention of which branch or how long), and that he was 74 when he died. THAT'S IT!! The least he could have done was read the obituary. After the spoken commercial, we got a 10+ minute sermon about how it is the lord who determines if you wake up in the morning and that stress will kill you. He even implied that the FIL went into the hospital basically healthy but the lord decided it was his time. The man had been increasingly sick for two years... Now, it was the sister-in-law who dealt with the funeral home, so I'm not sure what was arranged. I also know that they didn't have a lot of money for the service and the FIL had not made prior arrangements. However, no matter what was paid for the service, there was really no excuse for the lack of respect for the deceased. read more
