I love this place. The food is made to cater to an American palate, but is very tasty. People rave about their chips and salsa, and they are not over selling them. They are really incredible. I also an a fan of their margaritas. They are fresh and generous in portion size. If you're a little lady (like me) then make sure you have someone to drive you home, as you'll be a little sloshed after about one. My husband and I are HUGE fans of Estrella's sister store, Casa Estrella's on mission. So, we decided since we only wanted tacos, we would just go to Estrella's instead of driving all the way down mission. Everything was going fine, although the restaurant was a bit crowded, but it started calming down after we got seated. We were seated right next to the bar, which was okay, but the bars was full so it was a bit tight. No big deal. Our servers were very friendly and catered to what ever we asked. My husband and I both ordered tacos. Now, I love shredded chicken with the homemade shells that are super light and crunchy, which is what you would normally get at an authentic Mexican restaurant. Well that's not what they had. The shell was a very thick very hard corn shell, which was over done. It was not good, plus, it was covered in Lettuce. It looked like a salad. I thought it was before I moved all the greenery out of the way. But other than that it taste pretty good. It was a bother to me as well that they didn't have any house red or green salsa. Just tapatio or chalula. All of that can be excused, I can order soft tacos next time, and ask for less lettuce. But, THIS IS THE REASON I WILL NEVER COME BACK TO ESTRELLAS: the bartender. Yep. The one making all of those delicious margaritas, mixed drinks and glasses of wine. This bartender was older. She must have been in her 50s maybe 60s. She had dark, short curly hair and was tall. She had an attitude and was giving a MAJOR attitude to anyone who wasn't at the bar or was a regular. Now I didn't order a drink, neither did my husband, so this was just all observation. What bugged me the most was this: a future customer called in, and she answered. The person on the other end was obviously asking if she could speak Spanish. She kept saying in a very aggravated tone, "No!! I don't speak Spanish!" She kept saying that!! Yelling at the future customer, in front of everyone dining in. She wasn't professional in the sense that she didn't go to the back of the house to answer the call. The call kept going and she finally said to the customer "I guess I could find you someone who can..!" Hung up the phone and through very angrily on to the table making a very loud crashing sound. She then proceeded to tell her customers at the bar how she hated when people called and asked if she could speak Spanish, and how she could help not knowing. She talked about how annoying it was when "people like that called in" and how it was bothersome. Let me remind you, she works at a MEXICAN restaurant. Of course Hispanics, Latinos etc. are going to call in. She could of resolved this whole situation with handing the phone to a waitress or a cook who spoke Spanish. She had to know someone who worked their spoke Spanish. She ruined my husband and I's night. She left me with such a sour taste in my mouth, and I felt so embarrassed even being in that establishment. I would rather drive half an hour to casa Estrella's then the 5 minutes to Estrella's Because of her I will never ever go back there. read more

Bomb.com! Food was so good! Tiny place but we were seated within 3 minutes during lunch rush. The Chamoy Mango Margarita was awesome. I couldn't taste the tequila at first but when I got up to leave I guarantee you there was tequila in there!! Had the Chicken Cancun with salad and it is the best I've had. Great! 98% of the time, apparently! The other 2% happened today, 11/11/16, around 11am. Nothing major, just a cheese enchilada that was only warm-ish and not melted in the middle (not a snobby opinion; actual shreds of cheese clearly unmelted throughout the item). No prob, had another one sent out. Same thing. Woh-woh. So I just didn't eat it. Server took it off the bill after I mentioned it (maybe should have asked me how it was??), but then gave me some pointers about how they're always like that, another couple ordered them just before us and *finished them*, and that's how they do them there, and they're popular... So apparently, that's how they do their successful cheese enchiladas: Not Melted All The Way Through and Just Barely Warmer than Room Temp (but the plate is scalding! watch out!). For a family owned Mexican restaurant I expected authentic good food and atmosphere, however it was far from received. If I could give this place no stars, I would. That being said I'll give you a rundown of this restaurant. The margaritas are severely overpriced and really bad. I've worked in a Mexican cantina in previous years. They don't even use real lime juice, yet the menu clearly has it in the recipe. There is a sever disconnect from what the restaurant wants to present, and what they actually do. I came in here for lunch, just a margarita and a a shrimp cocktail. The shrimp cocktail was inedible. It has some sort of slimy shrimp on the outside of the plate. Even though I was put off by this sight of the dish I decided to try it anyways, and to no surprise it tasted completely rancid. I'm glad I didn't receive food poisoning! Never again. read more

We do too now, and oh, lemme count the ways! Fluffy Chips as we call them, otherwise known as Flour Tortilla Chips. light and amazing! I could eat these by the bagful. They're usually served sized in with the regular chips and the fantastic salsa-but you can ask for a basket of JUST the flour ones if you're addicted like me. The burritos are HUGE. Like a small child. No one told me, I ordered one. Sigh. It was delicious and tasty and all together impossible to finish. All the food we've had there has been good, the ceviche particularly. The margs are amazing!! They have all kinds of flavors but the mango, blended, is my favorite. My only gripes are how tiny it is and how long the wait is. Drinks and food are little slow too due to the busy-ness. I'm sure it's a small kitchen too. (If it's not, knock down a wall for gods sake! Or let's take over the yogurt place next door hu?) You might wait for days till you finally sit down and then you need to keep your elbows in, it's tight quarters. The service is pleasant considering the steady steam of starving clientele. I like my Mexican restaurants to cater to, you know, Mexicans, especially since 2/3rds of the town it is in are Hispanic and we are an hour from the border. The service was forgettable. We got seated in a booth, they took our order, then forgot about us. Not a big deal, as my expectation were pretty low. The best part of the meal was the chips made from flour tortillas, something I hadn't been served in ages and that I ate a small bucketful of. My son and I nearly came to blows over the last few. Sorry, I sound like a hater. This place is ok. It's reasonably priced with decent portions. Bring Mom and Dad from Des Moines and feel safe that they will love it. The chips are amazing I will give them that. They are fluffy flour fried tortilla chips. They're delicious. The entrees.. Not so much. It's like they were trying too hard to pack too much into one thing. My husband ordered enchiladas and when he received his order there were peas in them... Who puts peas in enchiladas? Also we ordered queso for the chips thinking it was going to be like a dip... It was ground meat with a sprinkling of melted cheese over the top. 90/10 meat to cheese. My quesadilla was filled with bell peppers, onions, and other things I wouldn't have expected in a quesadilla, and was dripping with grease. The manager did kindly take off the queso from our bill, since that wasn't what we were expecting. They're customer service wasn't bad.... Just need to maybe simplify a few things!! Love Estrella's! Moved to Fallbrook about 2 years ago and found it right away. I judge a Mexican restaurant by the Chile Relleno, and theirs is fabulous (big, stuffed and the egg coating is light and fluffy). We always ask for hot salsa and just corn chips (they serve corn and flour chips mixed and some people love it). The Ramiros Carnitas is delicious, tender, flavorful and a huge serving. We always have leftovers for breakfast the next day! The folks behind the bar and in the kitchen are fabulous ... a very lovely family restaurant (I mean the people who work there are family or like family). You may have to wait if you arrive at a peak time. The dining room is small, we love getting a seat at the bar when it's just the two of us. Drinks here are good ... I like the skinny margarita as it isn't made with bottled mix. The shots of Clase Azul have heaven mixed in with the tequila. We bring houseguests here every time and they rave about it too. Cons: Small place, very busy; service is average. Pros: Peerless chips and salsa; great take-out service; quality ingredients and it shows. The tortilla chips are obviously made at the restaurant, and they have both corn and flour - they are fantastic! The salsa is fantastic, being fresh and zesty and light. I was not blown away by the carnitas, but they were good! Carne asada is pretty good here, with that refreshing char that is missing from the stuff at the taco joints. The cocteles de camaron/shrimp cocktail is good and fresh. The chile rellenos and enchiladas are delicious! Pro-tip: it is idiotic to pay $7 for carne asada fries or nachos at Robertito's when you can pay $7.65 for the same dish here, take-out, and get it made fresh from fresh, high-quality ingredients. The fresh guacamole alone should keep you from buying from a taco shop. This is the best Mexican food in Fallbrook, and the best food in Fallbrook alongside Truppiano's and Dominick's. read more

We've tried to come several times hoping it is better but there is no where to wait and it's always packed. I got the garlic shrimp plate and it was really good also got the ceviche but they don't put a lot of shrimp in it, mostly vegetables. When I went for Sunday happy hour the service was really slow. To me it looked like they were a bit understaffed but some of the staff was just hanging out while our waiter was serving 5 tables. If you come with your family DON'T SIT IN THE BAR AREA! Estrella's is a smaller restaurant so if you're going during dinnertime on a weekend be prepared to wait in line for a while.. but FYI it's worth it. We're slowly on our way to becoming regulars here. We came here a couple weeks ago and decided to sit at the bar. Our bartender's name was Frankie and he was easygoing and nice, he invented a super special off menu margarita. It's called the spicy mango, make sure you order one when you go here - It will blow your mind! They also have margaronas.. my favoritest drink ever. Star power! Food - bomb. I've been experamenting and actually trying something different every time we come here. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in all of San Diego. The place is family owned and operated. This is the family's second go having previously been closed when the 76 was expanded. Having eaten at both restaurants I have to say the food is WAY better now than before while the drinks are as amazing as they ever were. The restaurant is cozy and always packed. Despite the lines being long everytime I go, I never seem to wait more than ten minutes (even when I found myself at the end of the line all the way down by neighboring Froyo!). They accomplish quick table turns but amazingly I have NEVER felt rushed when seated. They start you out with the most addictive chips out there. I highly recommend starting off with one of their margaritas or a beer (coldest out there!). Their Camarones a la Diabla is fantastic. The chile relleno burrito is my staple, the chicken fajitas, garlic shrimp, enchiladas, ceviche, chipotle chicken, and carnitas plate are all fantastic. The beans are great and the rice is perfect. I've eaten here many times and the food is consistently excellent, prepared perfectly, and never greasy. The restaurant has two tv's and is a great place to watch a game or any big fight. Decided to come here on a quick lunch when the other place I found on yelp wasn't open yet. This was just around the corner It's loud and small in here. Had to sit at the bar. It's packed so that says something. Wifi was blocked. I personally think all business' should have free wifi. I ordered the chicken flautas. They were decent. The salsa was nice and chunky which I like. The was like a mix of stale corn tortilla chips and homemade flour tortilla chips. Very odd. Service wasn't extremely fast. Thought I could have been seen faster. For instance my credit card is sitting in the binder he bar tender just gave me, he walked away from behind the bar. Don't know where he is now.
