Take it from someone who takes espresso a little too seriously: this place is outstanding. Other reviewers mention the pastries, lattes, atmosphere, and friendly service, and I believe them. But for me, this review is about the coffee. The roast, the grind, the pressure, the balance, the crema, all of it worked. This was not just a decent cup from a cute cafe. This was careful coffee from people who know what they are doing. You can smell the roasting as soon as you open the door. That is usually a good sign, but it does not always translate into the cup. Here it does. We were especially grateful to find this place after a strange travel evening near Dungeness Spit when almost nothing seemed open and dinner ended up being a couple items from Walmart eaten in the car. Then the next morning, here was this small cafe in Sequim producing coffee with more care than plenty of places in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Great service too. I've been coming to Essence for a few years now. This little cafe and roastery is hands down, the best in Sequim. When I was looking for the 'best coffee in town' I found a Yelp review by a coffee aficionado from Seattle. He said that this was the place! And it truly is. My favorite is the Cortado! Their in house roasts are very fresh and exquisitely done. They have great lattes and mochas, and if you're a coffee aficionado like me, you'll love the pour overs. In the back area is a comfy section with a couch and chairs. The main area has tables and a coffee bar for the solo flyer. Food fare is mainly local pastries, scones and muffins. My go to is the chocolate croissant, which accompanies my daily Cortado. Warning, this combo is known to both enlighten and create a vortex of energy which is a great start to your day! There are many regulars, where 'everybody knows your name.' I do appreciate cafes that use only pesticide free beans, and I've inquired and found this to be true at Essence. TL DR: delightful location, ok espresso based on 1 visit so far. Not nearly as good as [Ladro/Cherry St/Zoka/Herkimer/Olympia/Anchorhead] in Seattle. First off, let me say that I WANT TO LOVE THIS PLACE! I go to Sequim fairly routinely, maybe monthly, and need a solid latte option. I'm looking for something about as good as Caffe Ladro in Seattle (which is an excellent chain), or at least as good as I can do at home. I have tried many places in Sequim and generally they are all not good. Finally I made it to Essence and walked in the door and immediately thought "this is it! Finally!" The space/furnishings/art are lovely, there's a Hoffman book on the coffee table in back, the coffee hardware is serious and the workspace is clean. The menu makes sense and is coffee-first. It screams "first rate espresso shop" and I was thrilled. Then... we had our lattes (no syrups or anything, just plain lattes, one dairy and one oat). Were they bad? No. Were they great? No. They were sort of meh, some muted ok flavors but under-extracted and a bit sour. The absence of latte art, while it doesn't impact the flavor, was also a tell. So... I'm hoping that was an aberration. Maybe that barista wasn't bringing his A-game that day. So I'll be back at least 1 more time... and crossing my fingers that this is it. read more

This is a very nice shop with a clean restroom and lovely photography on the walls. The barista's are nice and helpful in choosing a drink. They had several options for our pour over coffee. It would be nice if they had cream out so you could add the amount you want. We typically like a solid medium roast and this was a little too light for us.
