Servers are nice and usually efficient. Slushies are not that great but the coffee drinks are done well. That's why the lines are long and so is the wait just at the times you most need your coffee, in the morning. read more

I'm a local attorney, Peninsula native and have resided in Port Townsend since 1997. I do my best to patronize local businesses during a time where odds are squarely against their survival. Quality of service and goods at MB have consistently been exemplary; hence, my surprise at the openly hostile and patently offensive behavior from their closing barista on December 5th, 2023. After a long day at work, my fiancé attempted to order us two drinks. The barista cut her off mid-sentence to belligerently bellow that the business is holding in excess of $70.00 USD in returned checks from her and would refuse service until the alleged arrearage was paid. This is inaccurate, as not a single check has been returned NSF to this business from my fiancé's checking account. We have bank statements and posted/cleared check receipts to back this claim. When we offered to show the barista evidence that the checks in question had in fact been paid, she appeared uninterested and demanded that we return with a copy of our bank statement for her review. Apparently the barista moonlights as a forensic accountant. Doubtful. The barista, when questioned, did not have NSF returned check receipts or any other legally credible/ competent evidence of nonpayment. I guess we were expected to leave the disputed amount as a tip. Until I receive a formal written apology from the owner, I'm taking my business elsewhere and will see to it that my large and influential network of family, friends, business associates and clients do the same by buying them all season gift certificates at the competition read more

FEEL THE BURN! You've warned customers for several months now that the lid doesn't fit the cup. But aside from the warning, you haven't solved the problem. Pathetic! If you walked across the parking lot you'd probably find the solution in the paper goods aisle at QFC: cups with lids that fit! This month you raised prices for coffee drinks, leaky lids and all, which says that -- for Mean Bean at least -- there's only one more profitable than having no pride: having no shame. It's only a matter of time before a customer get scalded, contacts an ambulance chaser, and teaches you a thing or two about customer safety. Who knows? Perhaps your recent foray into price gouging will cover the expense of the lawsuit. read more

I spend about $25 a day here. That adds up to about... $700 a month. Unfortunately the Barista found it necessary to bellow out the window that she wouldn't serve me unless I paid a $70 dollar bill for bounced checks. I write about 1-2 checks a month here and according to my bank statements, they've never bounced. I asked her to produce an NSF check receipt and she didn't know what that was. Don't let the name fool you, these Baristas are anything but mean. I feel good every time I swing by Mean Bean Coffee. It's partly from the quality of their coffee, but mostly I pick up the good vibes emanating from their baristas. Mean Bean is staffed by sweet people who make great coffee. Located in the QFC parking lot at the top of Castle Hill, I pass their little drive-up coffee hut any time I leave Port Townsend (by car). Their building is simple and their prices are standard. I miss you MEAN BEAN!!! I lived in PT for about 6 years and worked at the Hospital there prior to moving to Austin TX. I dont think I can really convey HOW GOOD Mean Bean was. The coffee is delicious, the drink selection is awesome and I've never had a bad experience no matter what I get. I just cannot find coffee that can compare down here in TX. I dont think they know what coffee stands are down here, it's quite sad. I miss Jeromy's morning Mocha's more and more everyday...maybe he needs to franchise so I can bring the goodness to Austin! ;-) read more
