Cousin was looking to do kosher Fleisch tonight, so we met at Essen NY kosher deli in Midwood, Brooklyn, NYC. First time there since they relocated. Much larger space than expected. Diverse menu for a Jewish deli including bbq, Chinese, etc. Seated right away and not crowded for dinner after today's fast ended. We all got jumbo sandwiches and took half home: Rueben, hot Romanian pastrami lean and corned beef lean and turkey. Unlimited coleslaw and pickles which were excellent. Sandwiches were good not great. Service on point, but the server seemed quite unhappy and apathetic. Ambiance is basic with sone Jewish memorabilia. Prices were appropriate for kosher meat restaurants. Warning: 20% service charge. I didn't see any post about it entering the restaurant or on the menu. Only 3 in our party. My favorite kosher deli in the states remains the 2nd Ave deli in Manhattan.

Left nothing behind!!! Gumbo soup 10/10 on a cold day!

The Host Eric was so kind and talking to him was like talking to an old friend. I ordered the Turkey Gumbo soup and had some questions about the Matzah ball soup, Eric was kind enough to let me try a sample! 10/10 would come back and bring a Freind !

I've been here twice and I'm definitely coming back!! I don't have to travel far now because they make the best pastrami sandwiches I've ever tasted. The Cole Slaw and the Caesar Salad are delicious, too. Hoping to bring the rest of my family to enjoy next time!!

It needs to be stated up top that Essen is in no way seeking to compete with Katz's or Pastrami Queen or any of the other many more well-known delis across the city. You may not see them on the Food Network or written up on Eater or even blurbed by any of your favorite celeb chefs. Now that that's out of the way, let's get to what you *can* expect from Essen NY Deli, which is a phenomenal lunch. Essen serves the type of food that simply hits the spot. I had been craving pastrami, but not necessarily the "scenes" at some of those other spots I mentioned earlier. I just wanted a sandwich. Essen offers a fantastic lunch deal which includes a half sandwich, soup or fries, and a soda. I pounced. I went with obvious choices -- matzah ball soup, pastrami sandwich (lean), and a ginger ale. There was a bit of confusion by the server as he first brought my soup, then delivered a full corned beef sandwich. When I stated that wasn't my order, he speedily corrected it, apologized, then threw in the fires for me to make up for it, so I ended up with both fries AND soup, but take note, this is not the norm. The soup was bright, flavorful and teeming with noodles that swam around a gargantuan matzah ball that was perfectly tender to the bite and dense. I would've appreciated a carrot or a parsnip or maybe some dill to perfectly even out the dish, but c'est la vie. Next was my pastrami sandwich, which was perfectly overstuffed. I'm going to go out on a limb and say Essen does not make their own pastrami, opting instead for a purveyor or maybe even the cold cut stuff. No matter, it was still delicious and again, it hit the spot. To counter any dryness of the meat I loaded it up with deli mustard (that is brought upon request.) Again, my lunch hit the spot and I enjoyed it very much. I removed one star simply for quality of food, which is not to suggest it was bad but that it is not on par with a place like Katz's, which sets a very high bar. My four stars are for the excellent service, the lunch deal, and for what the food provides, which in this case was a full stomach and a satisfied customer!

Good and authentic Kosher deli. The deli meats are tasty, we got the platters and it was delicious with all the sauces at the side.

The original name was called laurose and tuna salad chopping has been happening for over four decades. My fort green family really know what it is. My cousin and I stopped by yesterday and picked up a couple of heroes. I had to get my beef salami and 3 pepper colby jack cheese, extra mayo, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles, on a whole wheat hero (10.99) . Much love to a family staple for years. Definitely a place for you to pick up a sandwich that won't break the bank.

I waited for about 45 minutes, while waiting I picked up my chips and a white peach ginger ale. I also talked to the girl in front and she explained that you can get your sandwhich on a hero or roll. I ordered a chopped honey turkey with onions, pickles, lettuce and mayo. The guy who made my sandwich was soo friendly and patient. I just put my trust in him to hook it up lol. He also asked if I wanted to add the chips and I did. Overall my sandwhich was better the next day after it firmed up. The flavor was good but the texture was soft, mushy and just not what I want in a turkey sandwhich. It ran me about 12.00 and it was worth the experience.

If that's not the most Brooklyn thing ever, I don't know what is. Same sandwiches, different blessing. Everybody says order the pastrami, so I listened like a grown man should. Pastrami on rye with spicy mustard absolutely slapped. Smoky, juicy, perfectly stacked, and messy enough to ruin your shirt with honor. Then came the beef brisket on rye with a cup of au jus for dipping... and brother, that dip should be studied by scientists. Pure perfection. Washed everything down with a Dr. Brown's root beer like it was 1957. No fake trendy nonsense. No deconstructed sandwiches. Just old-school deli greatness that punches you directly in the soul. Great food doesn't care where you come from -- it just brings everybody to the same table. That's New York. That's Brooklyn.

I finally made it here to try any one of their legendary subs and sandwiches!…read more The deli is super old Skool Italian, cash only in a street not easy to get to without a car or taking the bus. But boy it is super worth it if you make the effort! The counter service is excellent and you place your order and wait for deliciousness! I ordered the Golden Boy Special ( Chicken Cutlet , Vodka Sauce , peppers , mozzarella and prosciutto) it was absolutely superb and the bread it was just incredible! My son and I shared a large plenty of Sandwich for two - and we got homemade meatballs to go ( 4 to be exact) - total bill $30 cash ! I went with two friends so were able to try three different sandwiches and to be honest, they were all just alright. The food: Roast Pork Special- Fried Eggplant, Provolone, Broccoli Rob- The texture of the pork came off a bit dry, the eggplant was good but kinda gets lost in the sandwich so if I literally had it on it's own I would have appreciated it more but who eats fried eggplant by itself? The rob was nice it added a nice crunch but didn't offer that much flavor. Giuseppe Special- Eggplant parm, meatballs, melted mozzarella. I couldn't get over how soggy the bread was. It was like wet paper towel to me. Soggy bread and everything kinda tasting the same made it underwhelming. Nicky Special- It just tasted like salad in between bread. There was so much veg, that was the main thing I remember in that sandwich.
