My boyfriend and I stopped in during a day trip to Midland. We got there pretty close to close and the place was empty but we had such a great experience. Their menu has a lot of options to choose from but I didn't find it overwhelming and they even have a wheel you can spin if you're super indecisive! Espresso Milano really captures the small town coffee shop vibe that I've been missing living in Metro Detroit. The place felt so cozy and I loved all of the plants, decor, and the warmth of the place. Tons of personality in this little shop. We chatted with Brad for a while and had a nice conversation about the shop and coffee and he was so kind and open to talking to us even though I'm sure he had closing work to do. Espresso Milano has been around for 31 years!! and I can see why even from this short visit. PLUS the coffee was delicious! Not too sweet at all, I love to be able to actually taste the coffee in my drinks. I would definitely recommend stopping in. It also seems like it would be a great place to have a chat with a friend or to bring a laptop to get some work done. I'll definitely be returning the next time I find myself in Midland. read more

This was my second visit to Espresso Milano in a few weeks. I highly recommend again. I had the 6 shooter last time and the cafe latte this time. It was piping hot and foam was full and hot. The ambience was great old place vibes. The groups gathered were of all ages and everyone seemed comfortable with plenty of easily movable tables. Something to note. Lots of parking in the back of street parking is full. I will go back. read more

The small cafe is in a decent location downtown with a wide variety of drinks on their menu plus a handful of baked goods. My coffee drink was fine, but nothing to rave about. Many of the specialty drinks were too sugary sounding or dessert oriented for my taste. The service was efficient and polite but not particularly friendly or welcoming. The interior is dark, dingy and depressing with uncomfortable and beat-up seating. The varnish is completely worn off the chairs so furnishings obviously haven't been updated in decades. The space is cluttered with an incongruous collection of scraggly plants in need of TLC, including a single spindly vine tacked up alongside the ceiling surrounding the perimeter. A tall shelf unit containing a bunch of children's items and a stack of plants completely blocks the natural light coming through the front glass windows making the space feel claustrophobic. read more

I stopped in here last year, ordered a coffee then sat down, inside. Apparently they didn't call your name when your coffee is done because I sat there for quite awhile. I finally went up to the counter to ask and my coffee had been sitting there, getting cold, not happy! This time I rode my bike here. Great bike parking right outside their establishment! Went in to order and this time I just ordered a regular coffee with the free refills. They had an organic Mexican coffee so that was my choice. I pumped the thermos to get only two small squirts of coffee. Not starting out well. I quickly mentioned it to the staff and they immediately started brewing more. I only had to wait a few minutes before the tasty, hot, organic coffee was ready. I love that they have different flavors of powders you can add along with sugar, honey and sweeteners. So I believe they have redeemed themselves, for now! Parking can be tricky with little parallel parking in front but as I mentioned the bike parking is right in front. Prices seem ok, if not a bit high. I paid $3.25 for a regular coffee that I fill myself. Atmosphere is casual. I didn't get the "hippie" feel other reviewers mentioned, but very casual. Seating inside is small with bar seating at the window and maybe 6 small tables. Outside seating is a bench, 2 very small tables and 2 picnic style tables with umbrellas. I got a gift card for Christmas to Espresso Milano. I went there on my lunch hour recently, had a little extra time. I got the Frozen Mudslide! Ohhh, heaven!!! I am so glad I got the large! I am a fancy coffee person but I don't know everything and the gentleman behind the counter was patient with me and explained things very nicely! I will definitely go back many times! What a treat and the prices are surprisingly low for what I got! The large frozen Mudslide lasted me 2 days! (I put it in the freezer after having half and it was just as awesome the next day) The coffee menu was extensive and I usually get my tried and true favorites when I go to a coffee place but wanted to branch out and like I said, the guy behind the counter was very helpful. I can't wait to try the other coffees but I have a feeling the Mudslide will be my favorite! We shall see! read more

My favorite coffee place out of everywhere I've lived and been. It is so comfortable and the best place in Midland. I come here with my dad every morning when I'm home to get their amazing Portofino coffee. They have amazing other drinks as well - I just tend to be a black coffee drinker. At nights it's filled with high school students and during the day with people on the move getting their daily caffeine fix. A must stop when I'm at home. read more

I'm not sure why I love this place so much, but I ended up stopping in here often when I lived in Midland, deep in the throes of a coffee addiction. I got the red eye a lot. They've got great coffee and there's just something about the ambiance that makes me want to sit and take advantage of the wifi. A great location makes it good for meetings as well. I've always enjoyed the coffee here. Everything I've gotten I've enjoyed. I do think they may need to try new things to be relevant with nearby competition doing better and better. Visited here with a friend who recently moved to the area. We both are very into coffee. This was suggested by a coworker so we stopped in on a Sunday afternoon. It's cute, but definitely lacked the welcoming local cafe vibe. The Mochachino was not very hot or spicy. The chai latte was more water than anything else. They didn't have matcha which was a surprise. The barista didn't help too much with suggestions on specialty drinks or anything. The only saving grace was the raspberry muffin. It was delicious. However, it was more a muffin top than a full muffin. We wanted to love this place, but weren't impressed. read more

I am going to preface this by stating that I specifically made a Yelp account to ensure that this coffee house sees higher future ratings. There is no other business in Michigan north of Ann Arbor that truly captures what a coffee house should be on the culinary level; the beans are organic, the coffee is strong, the specialty drinks are consistent, and the seasonal drinks change in that way only small businesses can, adjusting to even the slightest shift in local temperature or attitude. If you don't like coffee as a rule, the tea selection alone makes up a third of the truly massive menu, not to mention the cooler full of rare sodas and excellent smoothies. But there is more to Espresso Milano than simply the brews. When coffee houses first started popping up in Europe, their patrons were --for the first time in Western history-- fueled by the wonderment of caffeine. As a result, people would start to bring their work to the coffee houses; writers wrote, artists dreamed, and the coffee house owners served as patrons and purveyors of the arts. I have had coffee across the world, but I have encountered no business that remains so true to the original ideals of a coffee house. Paintings from local artists dot the walls and sell for reasonable prices, local jazz musicians play every Wednesday evening, and the academic can be seen in their natural habitat at any time of day in this lone beacon of intellectual and cultural significance. This is a good little spot in downtown Midland. Coffee isn't stellar, but it's above average and the atmosphere is cozy. The baristas here are continually kind and work efficiently. Not a bad spot to sit and get some work done, or meet up with a friend. That being said, if it's a Farmer's Market day, I opt for Narrativality Coffee pour-overs over Espresso Milano every time. Certainly Espresso Milano has some solid speciality coffee/frozen drink options, but if you want just a good black coffee brewed well, you're probably better off doing it yourself, going down to the market, or heading to Mt. I think this was the most bitter espresso I have EVER had. I had to put cane syrup in my iced latte because it was so bitter. They CHARGE 50 cents for cane syrup which is liquid sugar. Sugar is free and liquid sugar is usually free as well. read more

This is my favorite place to get coffee in Midland. I like the slightly hippie, unassuming 1990s-esque vibe. Their menu is extensive with a variety of specialty espresso drinks. They also have a few different roasts on hand everyday if black coffee is more your thing. The baristas know how to make the espresso drinks properly, which is definitely a plus. I wish they would update their methods a bit by offering pour-over coffees or perhaps Chemex as a brewing method. I'm not against coffee urns where you serve yourself, but it would just enhance the experience that much more if they chose some or one slow, handcrafted method! It would be nigh impossible for me to extoll the virtues of this fabulous indie coffee house. I have been a dedicated patron for nearly a decade, and it has always been my go-to destination for my java fix. The incredibly friendly staff, all of whom greet me with a smile and friendly conversation, are very knowledgeable about their products which are very high quality. Their coffee may not be for everyone - it has a delightfully strong flavor, which I love, and even when you order a drink that seems as though it would be particularly sweet (such as a caramel mocha) the sweet flavors are subtle, more of an accent to the coffee. That, as far as I am concerned, is precisely how flavored drinks should be done with coffee, but others may disagree. For those others, there are always fun options including icy frappés and a non-alcoholic mudslide. Truly, everything - from the atmosphere to the people to the coffee and delicious baked goods - is stellar. I could not recommend it more highly. :) read more

To some individuals, including me, coffee can be like crack (I'm assuming). Everything's better with a little coffee flowing through your veins. So finding a good coffee shop is a top priority in any city I happen to find myself. A good coffee shop should be convenient and have a good feel to it. It would be nice if I didn't have to sacrifice my unborn child's college tuition for a grande. But above all the coffee needs to be something I'm willing to pay for; otherwise why not just stay home and start the day with some Folgers? So I recently decided to try a coffee shop in Midland that I had heard good things about named Espresso Milano. The self proclaimed indie coffee shop is a tiny, hole in the wall shop located on Ashman st. between Larkin and Main. The area, which is filled with mom and pop shops, gives Espresso Milano a small town vibe that feels a little bit like Mayberry. I half expected to them to know my name as if I were a regular coming in for my usual morning coffee. Unfortunately, Espresso Milano didn't live up to the hype, and it's unlikely that I will be drinking their "100% Arabica coffee" again anytime soon. Going to Espresso Milano seems a little inconvenient. It's located in a corner of Midland without any big businesses. So there's really no logical reason to stop in on my way somewhere else, even though it's only two minutes away from my house. But the inconveniences don't stop there. Trying to find a parking spot near the shop can become a headache. Most of the parking in the immediate area is parking on the side of the street, while the rest of the parking lots are for parking permits only; even the small lot behind the shop is labeled as one hour parking. If you ask me, only being able to park for one hour defeats the point of going to a coffee shop all together. I can't imagine hanging out with friends, and running off every little bit to go move my car so I don't get a parking ticket. But I decided to deal with the time restraints, parked in the last spot available, and made a note of the time. Like most small coffee shops, Espresso Milano has a very indie feel about it, which is exactly what they were going for. The sidewalk leading to the front entrance is lined with benches, and bushes just beginning to bloom in the early spring. Upon entering into the building, I'm greeted with the amazing smell of fresh brewed coffee. The walls, painted a light tan color, meshes well with the maroon of the open ceiling rafters to give off a warm, earthy feeling. The room itself is fairly tiny allowing very little room to maneuver around obstacles with a backpack, but mostly feels more comfortable than cramped. The tables and chairs appear a bit worn, which adds to the indie feel that they are trying to portray. The background music is a generally upbeat mix of different genres; it's loud enough to hear but not overpowering. Also adding to the indie vibe is the menu. It's a large chalk board hung from the rafters with a slightly distracting amount of information on it that looks cool, but makes it somewhat difficult to understand quickly. Written on the board in different colored chalk is what you'd expect to see on a coffee shop menu. They serve a variety of coffee, loose leaf teas, and smoothies. To add a little independent flare they give some of their mixed coffee drinks original names. For example, "Brad's Favorite Coffee" is caramel coffee drink, with or without whip cream. I ordered "The White Poodle" which is a white chocolate mocha. Or, there's my personal favorite; a mix of coffee, raspberry flavor, and white chocolate affectionately named "The Berry White". While my coffee was being made, I noticed the prices for the coffee were fairly on par with some of the other, bigger named, coffee shops such as Starbucks or Biggby. I say fairly because although it was close to the same it was still on the expensive side of the price range. A large regular coffee was $2.50, and my large white poodle was almost $4.77, which is a price Bill Gates couldn't afford to pay everyday for coffee (I'm assuming again). Upon receiving my coffee, I couldn't tell why the prices were on the expensive side; the coffee wasn't anything to write home about. Immediately I noticed that the cup was scalding hot, which was a good thing because coffee is supposed to be hot. I've learned, though, that is not always a given. The smell of the coffee was invigorating. Even when the cup was held down by my side, I could practically feel the caffeine already waking me up. While some coffee shops will give you a drink that's more sugar than coffee, Espresso Milano's coffee was coffee with a splash of flavor, strong enough to put hair on a baby's chest. Unfortunately though, the strength of the coffee made the white chocolate almost completely undetectable. The whole reason I got a white chocolate mocha was to taste the white chocolate.
