I recently had the opportunity to try Parlor Doughnuts in Bay City. Their 'Layered Doughnuts' are…read moreunique and reminded me of a cronut or a super thick elephant ear with a crispy & sugary outside and soft, chewy middle. I really enjoyed the consistency and texture of these. Lots of flavors to choose from, but I tried the Maple Bacon (very delectable with a good balance of sweet/savory/salty), the Bourbon Caramel (quite sweet), and the Peanut Butter Cup (great peanut butter flavor, not overpowered by the chocolate). All were very sweet...but it's a donut...so it's supposed to be sweet...right? Parlor also has Vegan/Gluten Friendly options that are more like a traditional cake donut with many different flavor combinations to choose from, as well as being able to choose the frosting/toppings on either a vanilla donut base or a chocolate donut base. These donuts are heavier and much denser, and somewhat crumbly, which made for a bit of a frustrating eating experience. They have excellent flavor and just the fact that they HAVE options for v/gf is fantastic because it's not easy to find good options of donuts to cover different needs. I didn't visit the store, as these were purchased by someone else, so I can't comment on service or atmosphere, but I can say that they have a great app with an easy ordering process, pictures, descriptions, and rewards program. Pricewise, the layered doughnuts are around $3.50ea, which seems high, but they are much larger (and tastier) than a normal donut, so it makes sense. Vegan/Gluten Friendly versions are around $4.00ea and while they are the size of a standard donut, you're paying a premium for a good vegan/GF option without having to hunt down a specialty baker.
