Left over pork rice with pernil
Susana C.

Hubby and I stopped here for a quick lunch. The place is pretty big, it was very clean, but it is freezing inside. If your planning on sitting inside to eat and it's winter time, bring a jacket and a scarf lol. My husband who is always hot was complaining that was cold in there . However, I will say the food was amazing. I got rice with different pieces of meat bc I didn't want beans and I got pernil. The pernil was so good and so was the rice. Hubby got the rice with beans and fried chicken and he enjoyed it. I got a small and for me, It was enough for lunch for two days. Hubby got the bigger size and he had enough for lunch and some leftovers for a snack. Their portions are pretty big. They are not shy on their servings. I will definitely come back. The gentlemen behind the counter was super helpful on giving us some advice on what to get. Next time I will definitely want to try the pork skin. It looked so crisp.

What a great find! Market/grocery with a kitchen that's putting out amazing dishes from Dominican Republic and the Caribbean at large quantity and low cost. Small $5, Large $7.50 and they load up whatever you point to. Barabacoa, Chicharrones, and Chicken stew were highlights, but everything was top notch. Staff was super friendly and helpful, and we hope we get to return! So much food! 7 stars, Motherfucker.

Roast chicken, plantains, yellow rice.

Awesome food in huge quantity. Very basic dining room but since I did take out, who cares. Strongly recommended but parking is tough. I ended up parking across the street.

Authentic, tasty food at a ridiculously low price. When I order food for take away, I get the small size, and it's enough for two people

Good tasting traditional Hispanic Caribbean style food. Place is clean, the service is excellent. Parking however is tough.

Improbably good mall food!…read more My family has been more obsessed than usual with Jamaican / Caribbean food since our fabulous meal at Bar Manje, trying our hand at various jerk chicken and sorrel drink recipes at home, foraging for wild amaranth to make a more authentic callalloo. Of course we honed right in on Scotch Bonnet when we found ourselves at Danbury Fair Mall, hungry. Scotch Bonnet is the opposite of what you think of when you think "mall food." Everything appears to be scratch made. There are bubbling pots on the stove right behind the counter wafting enticing smells. And we saw fresh, hot food being brought out every few minutes as we waited. The jerk chicken we tried was moist and well seasoned (I think boneless thigh meat), mild enough that the 11-year-old didn't have trouble with spice levels. The jerk chicken by itself was fair, but after a dunk in scotch bonnet pineapple sauce -- which packed some legit heat -- it was fire! Callalloo was lightly seasoned and retained some texture. Green plantains had an unusual-to-us texture as though they'd been boiled and baked, not fried -- more like potatoes than tostones. I'm a sucker for well made tostones, but these were healthier and held up better on a steam table. The progeny enjoyed the mac 'n' cheese. The counter doesn't showcase everything that's on their extensive menu (e.g. jerk fish, seafood boils). I assume these are made to order and will have to make time and stomach capacity for these on our next visit. Really nice folks run the show. We very much look forward to next time!

I owe a sincere apology to the team at Scotch Bonnet in the Danbury Fair Mall food court…read more Why? Because I walked up expecting... well... food court food. What I got instead was a legit, fresh, sit-down-restaurant quality meal being handcrafted right in front of me by people who clearly take real pride in what they're doing. I ordered the jerk chicken with their "smoked" jerk sauce over a field greens salad and it was honestly one of the best salads I've had anywhere in the area. Perfectly seasoned chicken, bright fresh greens, and a sauce that should probably come with a warning label because I'm still thinking about it a day later. The best part? The whole thing was under $14 with a drink. In 2026 that feels like some sort of culinary glitch in the matrix. While I was waiting, I watched the team chopping, seasoning, and assembling everything fresh with the kind of care you normally see in a full-service kitchen. It completely changed my expectations of what a "mall food court" can be. Meanwhile, everyone else can keep lining up for the same old tasteless, sodium-laden "Asian" food... or the wildly overrated chicken chain from Atlanta where people stand in line like sheep for dry, forgettable chicken. Their loss. And I barely scratched the surface of the menu -- wings, sandwiches, bowls, patties, and a bunch of other things I'm already planning to come back and try. The only tiny bummer? The plastic cutlery they offer is a little too flimsy for a salad this hearty and loaded. But honestly, if that's the biggest complaint I have, I'm thrilled. So yes... I came for a quick mall bite. Instead I found a place I'll intentionally come back for. And again, apologies to the chefs for the skepticism. You converted me.

"Adopt me Auntie" The food was so good at Aunt Chelda's that…read moreI'd like for her to adopt me so I can have it all the time. I was in the mood for curry so I looked up Jamaican restaurants in Waterbury. I've been to most of them. Such as, Mikey's, Caribbean Kitchen, and Berties. All good places. Then I see a listing for Aunt Chelda's Caribbean Cuisine. What's this? This must be new. Aunt Chelda's is on the corner of Meriden Rd and Alexander Ave in a small storefront. Look for the bright orange sign. It's primarily a take-out restaurant, but they do have four stools at a narrow counter for dining in. I was lucky enough to grab a seat. I had a small Curry Chicken. But "Small" isn't so small. You get your moneys worth for sure. She took a small take-out container and filled it with rice and peas. Then added her cabbage and veggie mix on top of one half of that. And then she mounded the tender curry chicken on top of everything. Aunt Chelda's is the best Caribbean food I've ever tasted. Everything was seasoned very well. Rice and peas were great. Curry chicken was excellent. But the biggest surprise was the cabbage. Usually I find the cabbage to be something just to fill the plate. You might say a boring after thought. But Aunt Chelda's cabbage is so flavorful, I could eat a bowl of it with nothing else. I told her as I was leaving that if her Curry Chicken is that good, I can't wait to taste the Oxtail and Curry Goat.

Everything was great, the establishment was clean and the service and food was great.read more
