From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming and hyped us up for the challenge. The room itself was cleverly designed, with puzzles that made us think, work together, and argue (lovingly) about whose fault it was when we got stuck. The clues were challenging but fair, and the props and environment made us feel like we were in an actual prison trying to break out. We loved the variety of puzzles, and the staff gave just enough hints to keep us moving without spoiling the fun. We didn't escape in time, but we had so many laughs along the way that it didn't even matter. Everyone from the adults to the kids had a role in solving something, and it was awesome to see everyone working together. My husband and I went as a date night/birthday celebration. We put off going for awhile because we really didn't have others to go with or could never align our schedules to go with larger groups. I want to start off by saying the customer service was fantastic. We went for a double date on 8/19 and this young lady was our game master. She was bubbly and easygoing. She told us her name a few times but i forgot it, i think her name is Carime? She was very cool. My only issue here was the escape room itself. We did the Prison Break room, which is marketed as their mid-difficulty level room. This room has only an 11-12% escape rate (with their "easiest" one only being 20% escape). I only recommend this business to people who are very polished escape artists. I've done a handful of rooms--enough to feel confident in one--but this one had a particular clue that you will understand only if you do a lot of escape rooms. As much as I did love our Game Master, i do wish she gave us better and more useful clues. That being said, its not her fault that the room isn't planned well. For a mid-difficulty level room, you shouldn't only have a 11-12% escape rate. One thing i would like to say specifically about Prison Break, is that 2 people are confined in one space. We only had 4 people, so this did not work in our favor, especially since none of us were polished escape artists. There is one person locked in a cell and one person confined to a bar by handcuffs. Take this into consideration when booking your room. If we knew this was going to happen, we would not have chosen this room. Overall, it was a fine experience, but i don't think I'll come back here unless i get better at escape rooms. I definitely recommend that more experienced people do visit this business for a nice challenge. read more

This was awesome!!! We had 7 family members in the king tut room. There are 3 different rooms. The king tut is the beginner room. You have one hour to find the clues , find the key to the door and get out. We worked together and escaped with 4 minutes to spare. After reading the reviews I went online to book and was confirmed for 11 am. Me and my two girls were excited. I was very disappointed when I received a call that they would be cancelling my booking one hour before we were scheduled because only 3 people were booked for the room. I searched the website to see where this noted and I couldn't find it. I was very disappointed. I have seen places before indicate this but I could not see it noted anywhere on the site. If we had one more person they would have allowed us do the room. So now we missed out and we can't even get our money back right away because it has to be "processed" I think this should be clearly noted that if the room that you are booking doesn't have enough people it will be cancelled and you may have to wait for your refund to process. UPDATE: Received a message on my daughters phone (we booked the room in her name) that the terms and conditions indicate that if there are not enough participants they can cancel. I must have missed this part. Sorry. This is why I wanted to update the review in all fairness . At any rate it might be a good idea to notate min number of participants required. So much fun! Eight of us got baby sitters and decided to venture to King Tutt's Tomb to try our hands at escaping this room in under an hour. Can't imagine anything much more fun than a bunch of 40-something couples trying to work together to solve a series of puzzles, riddles and seek out enigmatic clues to get out of a locked room all while competing against the clock. Of course I don't need to tell you that we got out, because, of course (we had an engineer, a detective and a surgeon on the team, yet the wives were the ones who figured out the majority of the puzzles). This is challenging and FUN! Great for a birthday outing or just a night out in the town. Try King Tut's tomb first before you go for the more challenging one. King Tut's tomb has about a 30% success rate while the other token are even lower. Definitely a good idea to earn your chops on his one first. We were pretty disappointed in these rooms. I'd like to start off by saying the game master was so sweet, and did a great job so our opinions are strictly on the rooms themselves and not at all a reflection of her. We did all 3 rooms in one day, we have done over 70 rooms and have definitely figured out the kind of rooms that we like and do have high expectations. Everyone has different opinions about what they enjoy doing in escape rooms, so I am aware that things we didn't care for could be what other people really look forward to in an escape room. I'll try to leave our opinions here without ruining any of the rooms or features for anyone else. All of the rooms involve a significant amount of math, translating and transcribing, except sometimes these translations all involved the same cypher so you would wind up using one cypher for 30 minutes doing what felt like endless paper work. I think the low escape rate is less indicative of difficulty and more so it just takes so long to do all this busy work that's what keeps you from getting out. Even after some of the puzzles and answers were explained to us they still didn't really make sense. Typically when we don't get something in a room, when it's eventually explained to us we like the feeling of "oh duh! That makes sense!" Or "I was so close I almost had it!" And in these rooms it was kind of like " I mean I guess that kinda makes sense?" We have done several rooms where we are handcuffed, separated, in different rooms etc. and they usually give us an ESTIMATE of how long we can anticipate being separated, locked up etc. Unless it's the whole point ( like their csi room which we expected to spend most of the 60 minutes apart because it's about communication) typically it's a very short time that you are confined to a space. One of the rooms it was a very long time and SEVERAL clues down the line until we were able to free our team mate and it made them feel left out and anxious. We tried to bring them the clues we found and tried to explain to them things they weren't able to see so that they could feel included and like they are also getting their money's worth but a lot of the fun of escape rooms is the tactile searching for clues and pieces which they missed out on. It also ate up a lot of our time trying to make sure our friend was included and the whole scenario didn't add enough to the theme of the room for it to be worth it. It could be argued that we moved really slow, but again with the math and the busy work and the convoluted puzzles it seemed unavoidable that it would take a long time. Maybe a solution could be, anyone being singled out in a group could be given the option to know about how long they will be like that? We would have definitely chosen our positions in the room differently had we known it could take that long to free them. I would suggest however the piece to freeing them come MUCH sooner in the unlocking process. The puzzles are pretty much all key lock, number lock and safes so there's not a lot of modern escape room puzzles in there. We have seen hundreds of lock styles; pressure, color, light, sequence, sound, to name a few. There are infinite Ways to trigger these locked doors or boxes to open and all of these rooms seemed pretty limited with their standard locks. Which I am sure this is someone's favorite type of puzzle so Im not taking away any stars because of this, but do think it's important to know when you're choosing your escape room. If you are first time escape roomers I would maybe pick somewhere else to go first so you can get a better idea of what the majority of escape rooms feel like and then come here and decide for yourself where it falls on the fun scale. I'm glad we checked Escape Modesto off our list but I don't think we will make the trip back out there to do any future rooms. read more

So my daughter Katie Easley went to one of these rooms with a group of friends when it first opened and she loved it so much. So much in fact that she decided to apply to work there. So as part of her interview process she had to do one of the rooms so I decided to do one with her. Finally was able to get a group together to do this! I was nervous that a group of 8 hard headed, know-it-alls would only butt heads when locked in a room. But there is literally so many things to solve at one time that you are actually only working in small groups of two or three or even alone at times. We had Sammer (yes that is hammer with a 's') as our leader and he was very helpful and awesome. We had signed up for the CSI room because that was the one offered online. Upon arriving he suggested that since we were first timers that we start with the level one KING TUT ROOM (still only 26% success rate). Some were reluctant, myself included, and wanted to smash on the CSI (hardest room with only two groups to ever complete) so he challenged us to try the KING TUT and beat the record of 47 min completion. I am sad to say we didn't escape, but were oh so close. I would say 90-95% completed. Only 1 puzzle left. He let us finish it after the hour because we were so close. Just needed 5 more minutes and double checking our puzzle to get to the end. "The room is very humbling" -Sammer. Anyways online when you sign up it says max of 10 members but if you give the place a call they can arrange more options for you. So if the room you want isn't available call and see what they can do for you. Or if you want 12 tickets instead of 10 they can arrange that. Normally i would not allow strangers to lock my friends and me into a strange room with no way out unless I play a cryptic game they have made. I have seen too many horror movies to know at least half my friends will be visiting Jesus by the time we get out. However this escape room was more of a Expendibles action movie. Lots of high energy moments but with out being concerned for the main characters. My friends and I were impressed by our sherpa, LAYLA, who guided us through wind and fire with 2 minutes left. We've done four escape rooms as a group, two in Sacramento and two at ESCAPE Modesto. We did the King Tut's Treasure and CSI:Modesto rooms on separate days in December 2017. Escape Rooms are a blast, great fun for friends, family, and team building. We did one Escape as a Christmas gift to family and friends. Everyone had a great time and are ready to try another Escape Room soon. Pros: The rooms are themed and decorated well. Especially the King Tut room with the Egyptian theme. It contains a sarcophagus, mummy, obelisk and other props. The staff is friendly and helpful. They will provide hints during the escape if desired. They are there to help and do a good job of making sure the group is having a good time and does not get stuck on one problem. Cons and Suggestions for Improvement: Red Herrings. Both rooms contained a few red herrings with puzzles and clues intended to keep players occupied and provide props but did not further the escape or provide useful information. In my reading up on escape rooms it is not typical to include red herrings. A majority of the puzzles in both rooms revolved around math and numbers. It got a little monotonous by the end of the second room in comparison to others we have done. We have done other rooms that included more abstract problem solving including colors, smells, musical notes, etc. Would love to see future rooms incorporate a wider variety of puzzles. The number of puzzles to be solved at a given time was usually limited to just a few. With up to 10 people allowed in each escape it would be nice to have more problems to work on simultaneously. There was no scoring system to rank how you did overall if you escape (we escaped both rooms with just under 6 minutes remaining). The rooms we did in Sacramento have score boards for monthly and all-time best room completions with results limited to teams taking 3 hints or less. This would be a nice addition to Escape Modesto. You need to wait outside for a staff member to let you inside before your designated time. While not a major deterrent, it would be nice if there was an indoor waiting area. Overall we had a blast doing the King Tut room and decided to come back and try CSI. I would recommend the King Tut room for first timers. read more

Escaping was both challenging and fun! Our team also left with bragging rights for being in the 25% that have escaped the King Tut room. This was my first escape room challenge. We had a group of seven, which IMO was the perfect number of people. The room created the perfect space for team building to find the clues and make it out of the room. I enjoyed the theme and thought it was well crafted. Our host was friendly and helpful and provided clues when necessary. There's another room that's going to be redone soon. I like the idea of the themes getting changed from time-to-time making it possible to visit multiple times. I'd highly recommend ESCAPE Modesto for a group of friends or for an office team building exercise. It's a ton of fun and I definitely hope to return again sometime! read more
