Happy day, that there is a second set of escape rooms in Long Beach - and this one just opened up within walking distance!
Escape Long Beach has much to recommend it apart from its fantastic location: minutes from the real haunted ship Queen Mary, nestled in a historical neighbourhood dotted by in-turn-creepy-in-turn-charming Craftsman cottages, and proximity to great restaurants as well as the beach. Since we just did a medical-themed room, we decided to try a straightforward ghost-ship-themed one for our experience, it being close enough to Halloween and us living in town being close enough to Long Beach's tourist pride.
The experience starts with the booking process, during which you actually get to choose the level of difficulty for either of the two rooms currently available, as well as let them know any team quirks you may have. Time to escape the ROOM is given as a little less than the 60 minutes we are used to, but there's a good reason for that.
There is parking for three vehicles at the establishment, but street parking is available along the adjoining streets in the neighbourhood. They have a lounge just two steps (literally) off-site, which has a huge big screen TV, a pot of dead flowers, a microwave and a fridge, plus a cute book about the real Queen Mary to set the mood ... And our first puzzle was to sign the waiver on the cracked tablet when there's no wifi! Eventually managed to solve three puzzles, so ... huzzah! We didn't think much of this at first, other than it was cute - but it was actually a necessary warm up because the Queen Mary adventure starts right there - so, depending on how long you stay in the lounge, your cumulative escape room experience will actually be an hour or longer. Almost just like the movie, Escape Room!
As described in our previous escape room adventure, we are bungling cops, so this time we tried our hands at being paranormal investigators instead: apparently the ghost of Queen Mary has left the ship and is now on the loose harvesting souls to sail her ship again. What? No! Send her back! Free the souls!
Thinking we were prepared, we were split up almost immediately - we had signed up to try the game at the expert level. Well, let me just say, it was a good, good game. I would wear pockets to do this room, because there's so much to keep in hand, and pants, because there's a little knee work involved. Love the attention to detail with the decor and tech, loved the red herrings, loved the way our senses of sight, touch and hearing were fully engaged, and LOVED the very flattering lighting for those must-take photos ...
We almost, almost made it - I blame our fumbling fingers! As it was, we had to leave a token of our near-miss behind ... *sob* ... so if you enjoyed this review and would like to help free us, look for Kevin T. and Michelle L.'s souls :-)
Since this is a new business, we were also given free appetizer cards to visit Panxa Cocina and The Firkin Pub after the game - so perfect. We can't wait to see more rooms from Escape Long Beach. Welcome to the neighbourhood! read more
