I was quoted $150 an hour on the phone The job was to remove my car off my grass on to the driveway. Basically move my car 30 feet from the snow which took less than 5 minutes. I was then told this was going to be well over $200. I told the driver my quote and he said that it would not be that low. He agreed to make it just under $200. Little things tell a lot about the company. I feel completely misled and price gouged. The first time using your service. Also the woman picked up the phone was not pleasant and like she was doing a favor speaking with me. I will not be using your service again. read more

We were driving from New Hampshire to Philadelphia to see our son at Villanova. Our car was driving poorly, shaking and wobbling, so I pulled off Interstate 91 in Holyoke, MA. As soon as I did, the tire felt like it went flat but it actually snapped. We thought the axle or joints were busted but without being able to see underneath it's hard to tell. We had *just* had it inspected and the alignment corrected in NH the week prior to this because we registered the vehicle there as new residents, so we were surprised something this bad would happen so soon afterward. Our roadside assistance had dispatched another company that no-showed on us after 2 hours of waiting. Eventually a cop came behind us and asked about our issue and then said he would get us a tow in 10 minutes. Ernie's Towing was our knight in shining armor. He showed up in 10-15 minutes and took us to Firestone, where they learned it was just a couple of sheered-off studs. The driver was friendly and we appreciate his help! They are well known in the area and provide a much-needed service, and I don't want to trash them. There is just one odd thing. I called them for roadside assistance, was startled by the price, and the dispatcher told me that the Commonwealth (the state) sets prices for towing. I checked on this afterward and I don't think it's true. What the Commonwealth does is to set an upper limit on the price; it doesn't set requirements for a minimum or a standard price. In other words, the company doesn't HAVE to charge so much. I did call another company, Hampshire Towing, and found that their price is competitive, so OK - but they shouldn't claim that the state made them do it. read more

Got towed during a snow parking ban--I don't live in Northampton, so I had no idea. When I called, they said to get there before noon to avoid the after-hours fee. I arrived at 11:57 (after an expensive Uber, on unplowed roads, despite the ban), and the woman claimed she'd already done last call, so I had to pay anyway. Avoid this place. My mother had a medical emergency and had to pull her car over - an ambulance took her to the ER (she's OK now), and Ernie's was called (not by her) to tow her car. They charged $175 for the tow, 3 miles up the road, plus $35 per day (she couldn't pick up her car because she was in the hospital - luckily friends stepped up and helped), and didn't seem to care that she was in a medical emergency, an elderly person, on a fixed income. A week or so later, I encountered an Ernie's Tow truck (a massive very long rig) at a traffic light. The driver made a move to cut us off from our turn, confirming my initial suspicion that these guys are terrible. In order to be fair, I should mention her car *was* towed without incident and without damage. Don't mistake these guys for the well-respected and honest Ernie's Garage in Northampton. We *love* Ernie's Garage - a totally different business - but stay away from Ernie's Towing. read more

This business is notorious for scouting out cars parked to be towed. I would not be surprised if UMass, the surrounding apartment complexes around Amherst, MA, and the town have contracts with them which give them free range on towing. I was unfortunately the victim of wrongful towing, during a rainy fall night at around 9:15pm. I parked in the Visitor's section of the Town House parking clearly behind the green line that separates permit parking and visitor parking. My friend and I verified 3 times to make sure. The next morning, my car was missing from the spot and when I called them they hadn't even registered it into the system so they could not even find it! How unprofessional. Even though once I went to the towing lot, they told me they towed my car at ~9:30pm, a mere 15 minutes from when I left my car. The woman at the cash register was disinterested and difficult to interact with. She pulled up the record of the towing incident and called the guy so, it was my word against the driver's. He illegally towed my car and I was slapped with a $150+ charge to retrieve my car. There's a confusing sign that also shows the rates, and the overnight/additional day fees did not seem to add up. Another huge inconvenience is they ONLY accept EXACT CASH. So I had to hunt down an ATM and then pay for them. I'm sure others have tried and failed to argue this. Park at your own risk... Don't expect any protection from Ernie's Tow-happy henchmen. read more

Manager Bret is a patient manager and a helpful representative over the phone. U fortunately if you are unlucky, you may get their female representative. From the first "hello" she was incredibly condescending and seemed to have great difficulty wanting to provide information on how to send a payment. Aparently it doesnt take a great deal of effort to send a form over email for most, but for her it's a real endeavor. If you get her on the phone, just ask to be transferred to anyone else, they will actually help you and earn their paycheck. Lazy rude people, should find a career that doesnt involve the very exhausting task of picking up a phone and being the bare minimum level of polite. read more

I had a flat tire and called AAA. They sent Ernie's Towing out to look at my flat tire. I had assumed my car tire would need to be replaced with my spare tire. Ernie's called to keep my updated as they drove over. I did not wait long. The person that showed up was very knowledgeable and quickly pointed out that my spare was not needed and he could fill up my tire so that I could drive my car to a local auto body. He filled that tire up and double checked my tire to make sure there was no sharp object in my tire. When he was finished he offered to fill up the other tire on the ddriver's side of the car which looked low. The attention to detail, knowledge, speedy service and friendly behaviour earns them five stars. I recommend this business to anyone I. The pioneer valley area. read more

I live at old school commons and we have placards on our cars as residents. I was outside with my dog and saw my next door neighbor having a problem with the tow truck driver. This was a Sunday night, Easter Sunday and his placard fell off his rear view mirror as he was moving things out of his car. He had just walked in his door on the first floor and he immediately saw something going on with his car so he ran right out. The tow truck driver was in the process of backing up to tow his car. I have seen this scenario many times before and when the owner comes out the driver backs off since these placards are very flimsy. The hook was not on the car and this driver would not back off of my neighbors car. It was so blatantly wrong that made me wonder if this company is racist? read more

They charge $40 if you wish to retrieve your towed vehicle outside of 9-5 business hours, but only $35 to store your vehicle for 1 additional day. So you pay more to get your vehicle sooner? Go figure that one out! $246 dollars for a vehicle they towed and held for 36 hours. Feels like highway robbery! read more

My freshman colleges student tonight had to call AAA for towing as her car broke down. She was in tears when she called us very worried about the whole situation. We told her to call AAA and they sent Earnie's Towing. She called us back, calm and happy. She said Ernie's not only got her car started but was really nice. This company is not consistent with their pricing, gave me misinformation on fees resulting in my paying more. An employee on the phone told me there would be a fee for picking up my car if I waited til the next day so I instead picked up my vehicle immediately - was then charged $25 extra and told by a different employee it was because I was picking up immediately and the fee would've been dropped had I waited (the exact opposite information). Called afterward to inform them of this misinformation, was shrugged off and treated rudely on the phone. Do not recommend. read more

Ernies is probably the worst when it comes to customer service, laughing at customers and saying " oh ya, I remember towing that car" - towing cars from Easthampton when there was barely a dusting, and the plow trucks were never released??? At $155 a whack seems like a scam with the City of Easthampton Police Dept. My friends apartment building alone they made over $1000, and laughed about it. It's April, and the snow was melted by 11:00AM. I am truly disgusted - Easthampton should be ashamed - thank god I don't live in this town. read more

They charged $50 to put and unsecured tarp over my car because a window was crack open. Another $25 for after hours (what is after hours as my car was towed at 4:30 PM). If you need a tow truck, I'm sure these tow trucks work just like any other ones so go somewhere else first. This company rips off so many UMass students with their illegally towing, just in Sept. 2012 180 students vehicles were towed in a single night, costing UMass $18,000. I was towed from Townhouse townhomes in less than 5 minutes of being parked. There were no signs saying that a permit was needed, nor was there signs on the property, but Ernie's insisted that I was in a no-parking area. I showed them photos of where my car was and the only response I got, "If the driver took your car, you were parked illegally." I fought with them for days about this, went to the BBB and showed them Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 266 Crimes Against Property, Section 120D. "Any person who removes a vehicle illegally parked or standing on a private way or upon improved or enclosed property, or holds such a vehicle after its removal, and who has not complied in full with the provisions of this section, shall release such vehicle to its owner without assessing any charges for its removal or storage." None of this mattered to Ernie's or the Amherst Police and I was charged over $150. read more

After our daughter's car was involved in a Hadley accident, apparently, the police called this scheister outfit to tow the car (hmmm, if I didn't know better - I'd think they were in kahoots!!!!), despite us having AAA. Because it was Christmas Eve, we couldn't do anything until Dec 26, on which day I was told that no, I couldn't get the car on Sat Dec 27. Turns out I could, in fact, have got it on that day. Result? They fleeced even more $$$ (at $35/day) out of me (total $285). The "people" that were behind the counter were unhelpful, uncaring and a sorry, pathetic lot. Oh, of course, they only take "cash" -- which doesn't surprise me - trailer trash like them only ever deal in cash. I truly hope this business goes under. Fast. read more

Daughters college car was a no-start 10pm at DDonuts 175 University Dr., she left note explaining with her cell number. Car towed by Ernie's, I arrived 10:30 am as they are unhooking it. $143.83 charge, includes $35 "storage charge" and $6.83 "fuel surcharge". "Can't avoid the storage charge because it is in the lot". $143.83 for a 4-mile tow at 10am on a sunny spring morning. Ridiculous charges and an all-around dungeon. Go elsewhere - you'll be glad you did. Oh - and it is "cash only" (I'd LOVE to see their books!) Similar breakdown with same car last year on campus - I called Northampton Ford, they used their local tow guy, cost $55 to tow the same car to Northampton Ford, sorry I can't remember who the tow guy was but they were great! Suggest you call Northampton Ford and see who they use. Northampton Ford was great as well. read more

Other night, I accidentally backed over an overturned pole in the UMass visitor's center parking lot, which promptly gets jammed into the underbelly of my car. I was afraid, I consulted friends, the consensus was that I needed a 5 foot tow. Call AAA, they say an hour (understandable, it was 10pm on a monday). As I'm sitting in my car, prepared to wait a good 45 minutes before help arrives, a tow from Ernies arrives in 5 FUCKING MINUTES! Plus the guy with the truck was extremely nice to boot. Checked out the bottom of the car, said it was scratched but safe to drive. Was home quickly and safely. By far the best tow experience I've ever had. read more

On March 24, 2018, the day of the Northampton March for Our Lives, Ernie's Towing, in collusion with Greg's Auto Repair, towed at least a dozen cars from Greg's UNMARKED lot. Greg's lot is routinely used, WITHOUT consequence, as overflow parking for Northampton High School sporting events. Yet, on the day of the march, Greg's (which was not even open) chose to work with Ernie's to have cars towed. Ernie's charged $186 per car for those towed. This cynical, mean-spirited, politically-motivated action should NOT be rewarded with YOUR hard-earned dollars. If you need a tow in or near Northampton, don't call Ernie's. And, make sure that AAA or your insurance provider don't use them to assist you either. read more

Towed my car as it sat in Brandywine parking for approximately 10 minutes unattended while I grabbed necessary visitor pass and greated my friends after not seeing them for some time. As I went outside my car had vanished. 155$ for nothing. To top it all off afterwards I discovered there were 0 visitor parking spots in the entire apartment complex, had to park in sylvan backlots and ride my bicycle back to their apartment. read more

I do not recommend Erine's Towing for anything unless you want to get swindled and have your money taken. After my fender bender yesterday in Hadley, Erine's refused to take my car to Belchertown demanding $90 up front in cash. As I wasn't expecting to get into an accident, naturally, I didn't have the money on me. Today when I went to get my car, my final tow bill from Erine's was $301, for holding my car less than 24 hours. The legitimate charges were mileage and tow fee of $123. The questionable fees that they did not inform me of on the scene of the accident were a $35 overnight fee, a $25 after hours fee (for picking it up at 4:05 on a Sunday), a $60 fee for plastic wrap (at $10/ft) over windows that they could have rolled up by reconnecting the battery. And the final indignity, they charged me $50 tow it out of the lot for the other tow truck company I hired to pick it up. Amherst Towing took care of me as I expect another human being to do. Amherst Towing said they would have charged me $160 for the tow, of course my car would have been in Belchertown, not Amherst because they respect their customers wishes and would have stopped at an ATM or accepted a credit card from me day of. read more

The past weekend I had a motorcycle accident returning home from a camping trip. I was only a mile from home and because of extreme fatigue ran off the road, toppled over, suffered third degree burns and a major concussion, and I was in the hospital for a few days. I had to call the police to find out where it had been towed, it was done without my consent, I was not contacted by Ernie's. Fearing the worse, I called them up - and discovered they had already charged me $500 just to carry a little motorcycle a mile up the road, and were charging $65 a day. In my past experiences with that kind of thing, the bill was only $150 or so. They would not let me drive it out of there, they would not let me pay with my CC card, they wanted a bundle of cash for it, and they said the only way they would take payment was from my insurance company. They refused to tow it back to my home only 2 miles away. I had to arrange a three-way call with my Progressive Motorcycle Insurance with them; they would not let me take it out of there nor would they deliver it to my living space, they would only take it to a repair shop. Their bill is now $800 just for a week's storage. These people are as sleazy as the Mafia - don't give them your service! I think they have a deal with the local police, charge exorbitant rates knowing auto insurance would pay for it, and put cash tax free in their accounts, which is why they require cash for payment. I would take them to court if I had the money - but now I'm broke! This is literally highway robbery! read more
