This was my first time at Ernie's and I'll absolutely be back! Although the line was fairly long, it moved quickly. They have SO many flavors, all home made. I tried the cannoli and s'mores ice cream. The cannoli ice cream was delicious, loved the cannoli shell pieces in it. S'mores ice cream is my favorite and Ernie's is some of the best I've had. What a delightful little find in northern Jersey on our way back to the Poconos. We love these little soft serve spots that dot the northeastern landscape. No frills, a bazillion signs, creamy processed deliciousness. Ernie's is no exception. It's not the fastest service you'll ever get, but it does come with a smile. The very nice girl working made a bespoke dish for one of us: hard cannoli ice cream on the bottom with side-by-side vanilla and tiramisu soft serve with sprinkles. Amazing! The tiramisu flavor wasn't super pronounced but the soft stuff had an amazing texture, and the pieces of cannoli shell in the hard ice cream were very much appreciated. The other one of us, inspired, got the scooped peanut better explosion (or whatever it was called) topped by cherry soft serve. It worked! Kind of like a PB&J. The cherry flavoring was a bit *too* artificial tasting but we did like the whole concoction overall. Bottom line: highly recommend! I've passed Ernie's Ice Cream many times but never actually stopped, until I found out that they have 32 flavors of soft serve ice cream available. I took a quick trip there on my bike, and ordered 3 soft serve flavors: amaretto, creamsicle, and hazelnut. They dont actually have 32 different soft serve machines. It looks like they take the vanilla soft serve, add a flavored syrup, and then push it through a machine that mixes and dispenses. The flavors were pretty good, but they had a vanilla undertone. Could just be me since i saw how they actually did it. They're super busy whenever i pass by, but the the line moves quick. Worth the trip if you wanna try different flavors of soft serve. read more

Cute little local ice cream shop located in Mahwah. Parking can definitely get crazy and difficult to find once the warmer weather comes. They have great prices for the amount of ice cream you can get. My favorite is their strawberry because they put actual strawberry chunks into the ice cream. Their cake batter is also delicious. Go here for amazing homemade ice-cream, Italian ice and soft serve! I love the fall favs and apple pie is to die for! It tastes like cinnamon ice-cream with little chunks of apple pie filling. I really love it! THERE ARE SO MANY FLAVORS!!! They carry pumpkin, banana and coconut seasonally which are my favs and sometimes hard to find. They even have Pineapple Dole Whip for all you fans that want to Pretend you are in a tropical island instead of the concrete jersey Jungle. The lines are long but they are quick to serve if the people in front can decide in time. They have little picnic benches on the front and side and sometimes the parking is tight but just park next door if it's after hours. Glad this gem is close to home. After ELEVEN check-ins, I've decided to update my review because of this one incident I had recently. I literally drive 30-35 minutes (each way) to Mahwah just for Ernie's ice cream. I will get to why I docked off 3 stars towards the end. My go-to flavors were Mississippi Mud Pie and Peanut Butter Caramel Cookie Dough. Ohhh noooo... BOTH flavors were replaced I ended up getting Peanut Butter Pie & Java Fudge Chip. Which is almost the same as my previous flavors. Boo got a coffee milkshake. My ice cream was really good, but Ernie's flavors never disappoint so I wasn't worried about that. All the 10 times that I've gone, the girls (employees) have always been friendly. I always gave them a tip because of their great customer service. Except the last time I was there which was 6/10/23 at night. When boo tasted his milkshake, he asked me to try it. It tasted like vanilla and the color was white. So I took another sip to make sure. He didn't want me to go back, but I went anyway because the girls are always so nice. I went back to the counter and I NICELY asked the girl who made it if it was coffee and before I could even finish my question, she said YEA ITS COFFEE. So I said that it tasted like Vanilla. Then she proceeds to say, "If you want, I can make you a new one." So I said, "Sure, please." Hoping not for her to get upset in any type of way. She took it and as she was throwing it in the garbage, she started cursing to her coworkers and getting an attitude. I get it you're tired (welcome to reality and dealing with customers). But if you were gonna get THIS nasty disgusting attitude, you shouldn't have offered to make me a new one. And after getting her attention, I told her JUST that. She ended up walking to the back room and her coworker made me a new one. The new one was beige and actually looked and tasted like a coffee milkshake. read more

Tried Ernie's for the first time earlier tonight. They have a huge selection of soft and hard ice cream. Creative flavors. They allow three different flavors in a large cup. Went there after a movie at Lafayette in Suffern. Ordered a small mango whip, a small cone of trash can , a medium cup of cinnfully churro & a medium amaretto/tiramisu soft serve. My mango dole whip was light & refreshing. A small cup.was more than enough. My husband thought the cinnfully churro wasn't cinnamon enough but was palatable. My sister enjoyed her mix of tiramisu and amaretto. I tasted it, there were bits that the syrup wants blended all the way that was sooo strong in amaretto. I relocated during the pandemic and now live about 15 mins away or so from this little ice cream place. They're still doing fairly well despite Covid. There's usually a line after work but everyone wears masks and social distances in line. I love the Espresso Cow ice cream and the Coconut ice cream (pictured) is a favorite as well! I've never had the soft serves since that's not my favorite but I've seen others get it and the serving size is pretty generous. The staff wears gloves masks. They're generally younger kids and are very polite, working hard despite everything that's going on. I will say, I'm from Massachusetts where when you say "cone" you mean sugar cone. I read about this place because they have "over 30 soft serve flavors". But in actuality, (as mentioned by the other reviewers), their flavors of soft serve are just vanilla, with flavor syrups mixed in. The fudge brownie soft serve tasted a bit chemically, although the amaretto tasted was fine. I am thinking that this place has a lot of great reviews because the locals in Mahwah don't have a lot of options, so they just don't know any better. I'm a sucker for small-town ice cream stores. Not being from the area, Ernie's seemed like a good choice. I was intrigued because they claim to have 32 flavors of soft serve. I asked if it was real flavoring or a flavor burst. They had said it was real flavoring. We had ordered the raspberry and key lime pie flavors. Immediately after we paid, I noticed all the flavored syrups where the person making our ice cream was. I was really disappointed because I wasn't expecting to be lied to. I was also disappointed because it was overpriced. Despite the artificial flavoring being NASTY, I thought the plain vanilla soft serve wasn't even that good. Maybe their hard ice cream is better, but I wouldn't suggest anyone get the soft-serve. It's such a shame because I love to support local business, but I can't support poor quality product and customer service. read more
