This review is based on numerous experiences with Ernie's through its catering business, which is fabulous. Whether it's old school burgers, chicken fried steaks or haute chicken dishes, this place delivers a wonderfully delicious plate. I've eaten a number of their signature menu items, including Malibu Chicken, Palm Springs Chicken, Chicken Fried Steak, burgers and even some humongous hot dogs, and all were pulled off very nicely. Their (catered) side salads are also cool and crunchy, and the desserts have always been the perfect sweet ending. Perhaps the best thing about Ernie's (catering) is that it's turnkey. Not only does Ernie know how to cook, he knows how to hire. His teams have always presented themselves and their product in a most professional way. They cook, plate, serve and then make everything disappear upon completion of the meal. All the while, they are polite and make everyone feel like a million bucks. I've had my share of rubber chicken at catered events, but Ernie's changed that game. When I enter a Restaurant the first thing I expect to smell is their wonderful food however, instead I was overwhelmed by the smells that you expect when you step into a chemical toilet. It was just horrible. You'd think that that smell would be banned from fine dining.cleaning should be reserved for when the restaurant closes not when it has guests . read more

I remember when Ernie's was in the shopping center over around Burke and Pasadena Blvd maybe? Went there as a kid with the family. Hadn't been in almost 30 years but found them and had to go. Ridiculously good service! Everyone was super nice and friendly. I don't get back to Texas much so of course I went for the chicken fried steak, but saw many other delicious meals go by. My first time here while out with co-workers but not my last. Good sized portions, great service, and some really good food. My Rodeo' grilled chicken salad good with the grilled chicken seasoned perfectly, and all ingredients were fresh. Co- workers said the broccoli cheese and rice and crawfish po-boy was good along with the blackened panama chicken. The meatloaf, the days special, was said to be just ok, and mostly not worth the $20 price. However, the portion size was nice. Can't wait to try something different on my next visit. I've been to Ernie's several times over the past year and I have not been disappointed yet. The servers are attentive, the food is hot, and I have seen Ernie hustling about each time I've been there. My hubby and I met for lunch. I got the table for us and our server was awesome. Drinks and rolls were delivered asap. They only wait I had was on my husband who got stuck behind a wreck. Anyway, I ordered the Palm Springs Chicken with green beans and mixed veggies, and my hubby ordered the Blacked Yucatán Chicken with okra and mashed potshots. I loved my chicken, it was hot and the cheese sauce was awesome. My sides were good, but I wish the server had mentioned that the mixed veggies were essentially more green beans but with a few other veggies. But that's my only complaint. I also feel the need to give Ernie some major props. Ernie's been a Pasadena name as long as I can remember, and I'm old enough to remember his first restaurant. He took a ho-hum location that's been several different restaurants that couldn't make it, and turned it into another Pasadena staple. The place is always packed! Also, more big props to Ernie, he is ALWAYS on the floor. I've seen him pick up trash, seat customers, and check on tables. How often do you see the owner seat customers? Not often. He hustles about making sure everything is running smoothly, and I think that's awesome. More owners should do that. These guys are only open for lunch and I suggest getting there early. My friend and I arrived at 11am on the dot and we were the only ones there, within 15 minutes there wasn't an open table. You are met at the front door by a taxidermy lion and an arch of elephant tusks, which I found odd because the don't really match the rest of the decor. Most of the menu is chicken related, I got the BBQ Teriyaki Chicken. Chicken topped with a sauce and mushrooms. For my sides I got fried okra and mac and cheese. My first bite of the chicken was cold, I asked the server if it could be warmed. It came back fresh from the microwave. Honestly, the chicken just tasted like chicken with BBQ sauce on it. When I go to a restaurant I enjoy getting items that I couldn't cook myself. The mac and cheese was runny, I am still shocked I didn't spill any on myself. They're only open for lunch; they appear to make their main income on their catering. Sandwiches for $7-8; plate lunches $10-20. Very disappointed. My wife ordered the special (lasagna) and after our server took our order, she took the order of the table next to us. The lady at that table ordered the same, after a minute our server let us know they were out of lasagna but we noticed she didn't tell the other lady anything. My wife ordered something else and after a while we saw our server take the lasagna to the lady that ordered AFTER us. We asked our server afterwards why she did that and she said it was because they got there first but I told her what mattered was who orders first and told her that what she did was not right. Prices are very reasonable and portion sizes are large. Ordered the small burger and fries. I didn't read the details of the burger that it came with bacon and cheese. I didn't mind the flavor at all but I'm just not used to getting cheese and bacon on my burger. After I removed it, it was just the way I prefer it.
