Have you ever experienced waiting in line somewhere while the associate chit chats with others, like you're not even there? You might have a question, but you're stuck, waiting, until they're good and ready to address you? And your inquiry is even brief, but you must wait? This is what it feels like taking a "class" at ArtYard - it's really more like you're renting the studio space for six weeks, which if you had acquired the necessary skills would be fine. I expected an attentive teacher walking around offering encouragement, tips and advice to students, and rooting them on, like the substitute that was there once, he was amazing! However, you must simply wait for a break in the conversation, say please, and not chew gum in class if you'd like help. Or to keep from idling, ask another student for help. One can be talented at what they do, but not have the heart of a teacher. (And yes, I understand that there is a certain amount of trial and error to creating art such as pottery: figuring things out, making your own mistakes, trying, trying again. I get that. I am a designer for a living.) Contacting the instructor - via phone, email or text - was unpredictable, you may or may not get a response. Sadly, I got to the point where I could take "the attitude" no longer: frustrated, upset, and humiliated, I walked out of the second class, and didn't return. And no one with the heart of a teacher would allow that to go unnoticed. But they did.

The book was Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren. You register for the class and pay online. It is an easy process. You pick up the book before the class. You have a few weeks to read the book and then show up to the book club, where you discuss the book while making a craft. I love this concept. This was my dream night/class, getting to read a book and then craft while discussing it. There were about 8 people there and the instructor. Everyone was so kind and excited to be there and talk about the book. The craft was tote bags. We took acrylic paint and painted a bunch of books on there. There were so many creative designs.  The space at Musejar is wonderful. There is a separate entry for art classes and the store. The store has some super cool craft products, as well as a large selection of fiber items, and decor. It is inviting and warm and always decorated with the season or holiday. The art space is open, bright and has everything you need to make your project successful.

We had the opportunity to take a class with Jennifer Hastings and her company, Create Flow. This…read moreparticular class was building an herb garden. First, we got to petsonalize and decorate our herb container. The one side was a chalkboard. We were supplied with chalk markers to complete this part of the project. We then filled the container with rocks on the bottom (for drainage) and potting soil. We then added the 3 herbs. They included basil, rosemary, and parsley. Lastly, we added whatever top garnishment you wanted in your pot. Jennifer was great with the instructions for this class and included information on how to care for our herbs at home. She was also super nice. This class was held at Briar Brothers Brewery, so we were able to enjoy a brew while there. Check out her website for a list of upcoming classes & locations. Instead, we decided to meet at Whimsy By Kelly--and everyone had a great time! The studio is very convenient (the plaza is on Delaware Avenue, just south of Sheridan; her storefront is on the side facing Glencove Ave.) and there's plenty of parking. While it's in a newer commercial building, the 1950s vintage tables and chairs make it feel warm and inviting--and just the right amount of quirky. For the party, Kelly consulted with me on what kind of activity we wanted to do, and we settled on a Zentangle crash course. Zentangle is a meditative drawing practice that anyone can do--you don't have to be "good at art" to make successful drawings using this method! Best of all, all of our artwork looked different! With the tools and techniques she covered, we were each able to produce something unique. She also sent us each home with a little drawing kit so we could practice on our own. In addition to Zentangle, she also offers LOTS of other art classes for kids, teens, and adults. There's something for everyone, regardless of skill level or experience--you can even do finger painting! I noticed some groups received detailed explanations while others, including mine, received very little direction, and it didn't seem to relate to age or gender. They supplied everything one would need. We were there for so long we seen a shift change, lol! But both workers were so nice! Overall, the place was clean, they had enough tables and chairs for everyone, and they even hold parties or events. Our pieces look a little dull currently but we will be back in approx. 1-3 weeks for our finished, bright and glossy plates! We will definitely be returning and recommending this place!

Those classes very season to season- pen and ink animals, print making, special ceramics projects, photography, etc. I took a 3 session Monet class, a figure drawing class, and an intro to pottery wheel class for a fraction of what other clay studios charge. My Monet ended up hanging in the lobby. Each season, they also have open art studio time - kids drawing, teen/adult drawing and painting, ceramics, senior sessions, and more. Three week days and Saturdays the center is open and you can work on your own projects with an instructor on hand for questions or advice. All the materials are provided. Everything is free with suggested donation amounts. This is such a wonderful asset to our community.

That said, I can't deny the variety they offer. No matter what craft you're into whether it be sewing, quilting, painting, home decor, seasonal projects, etc. Hobby Lobby seems to have just about everything imaginable under one roof even if it may be extremely challenging to find/the layout of the store wasn't great... While I'd prefer to shop elsewhere when possible, I can see myself returning if I'm in a pinch or need something specific. I can admit it's a convenient option. But none of that stops me from wandering the aisles of Hobby Lobby like I belong there. Because baby, I do. I may not be gluing rhinestones to wreaths, but when it comes to home decor? This is my Super Bowl. No matter the style, no matter the season--modern farmhouse, vintage cottagecore, "my house looks like an antique shop and I love it" chic--Hobby Lobby always delivers. Fall? They've got pumpkins in every size and personality. Christmas? Don't even get me started unless you want to hear me wax poetic about artificial garland and buffalo plaid. Need a random decorative sign that says "Gather" in cursive? Oh honey, they have seven. And I will consider them all. (Who am I kidding: I already own all seven!)
