tl;dr excellent traditional Roman cuisine meets exceptional service, so you are sure to feel right…read moreat home in this family-run trattoria The Roman pasta scene is dominated by four quintessential pasta dishes -- Carbonara, Cacio e Pepe, Amatriciana, and Gricia -- and each is served at any of the countless trattorias around Rome. While plenty of these places are unabashed tourist traps, others are true diamonds in the rough. Finding the gems can be challenging -- so I was relieved that our host in Rome invited us to one of his favorite family-run spots: La Pace del Palato. Just blocks from the Piazza Navona, La Pace makes its home on a slightly sleepy side street. Inside, cool bright colors pop out directly from the walls. Plaster meets exposed brick in a wavy pattern across the walls, themselves only decorated with shelves of wine. Metal stars hang down from the high ceilings. Muted jet-black chairs are pressed up to the lightwood tables, each decorated with a dumbbell-shaped lamp. Just days in advance, I secured a reservation for weekend dinner. The proprietor Renato didn't speak any English, but he was fluent in hospitality. As soon as we arrived, we were made to feel at home, and the staff joked with us like family throughout the meal. Our meal kicked off with two complimentary antipasti: a flavor-packed, Aperol spritz-inspired amuse bouche and a smoky roasted eggplant salad. After that, our group gravitated toward the "Roman Tradition" selection of the menu: classic Roman pastas. My favorite was the excellent Mezzemaniche alla Carbonara. Despite the deep yellow sauce, the flavor was rich and peppery rather than egg-dominated. I also loved the Rigatoni alla Amatriciana for its particularly tomato-forward sauce and plentiful pork. But don't sleep on the generously-sauced Ravioli (prosciutto, ricotta, and thinly-sliced proscitto) or the melt-in-your-mouth Stringozzi alla Gricia (cacio e pepe enhanced by guanciale). Across all of the pastas, my only criticism was that the pork could have been more consistently crispy; otherwise, the textures and flavors were excellent. We completed our meal with a tiramisu -- it is a testament to La Pace that we downed the dessert despite our already-full bellies. Our bill worked out to just over $100 -- on par with some of our least memorable meals in Paris. La Pace del Palato literally translates to "the peace of the palate", and the name couldn't be more apt. This was our final restaurant on a whirlwind trip through Italy, and everything about this meal satisfied. For Roman classics done right, look no further than Renato's humble cucina.

It's a small place on a neighborhood street. Not a lot of traffic. We ate outside. At first there were water misters going to cool folks off. Then when it got later , they turned off not sure why. Servers were all nice & helpful. Spoke English. Bread was served in a small paper bag. My husband had the ravioli with tomatoes which was very good. I had cacio e Pepe but opted not to have the table side creation (4 euro more) , though we did see someone else having that. Dessert - best dessert ever! Torta Della Nonna - flaky shortbread crust, lemon curd, almonds/hazelnuts. Raspberry sauce.

The review reflects on the nature of criticism: Ego muses that the harshest criticism can be entertaining, but ultimately worthless compared to the act of creation itself. This applies to the meal I just finished. I seem to have eaten endless versions of typical Roman trattoria, osteria etc. whilst in Rome but nothing like the meal I had at Taverna Urbana. The Caccio e pepe is prepared at table side and was excellent. Overall the service was excellent and the price reasonable.

L'Antica Fraschetta was my introductory gateway to all the pasta I was about to eat in Italy. With its checkered red table cloths, string lights, and charming decor, the ambiance was everything I imagined an Italian restaurant would have. I had trouble differentiating if the decor was authentic or overly cliché. Or maybe just had trouble accepting that I was actually in Italy. I still don't know, but I loved it! I had the CACIO E PEPE as my entree. I opted for the truffled version. So good! That pecorino romano just hits differently when you're in Rome. I also quickly learned the pasta is cooked al dente everywhere in Italy, which means on the firmer side. The patrons at L'Antica Fraschetta seemed to be a mixture of both locals and tourists. There is a bar area as well. I had a cappuccino to wake myself up after a long journey. Despite what social media videos may say, you can order cappuccinos any time. After our meal, we were given complimentary LIMONCELLOS. Great first meal, thank you!

We struggled to find "authentic" and "non-touristy" Italian restaurants in Rome. We tried the…read moretrick of walking a few blocks away from the main tourist attractions, but still found ourselves in the area where restaurants seemed to be less authentic. We found this restaurant that was an 8 minute walk from our hotel and it was THE BEST Italian food we had during our whole trip! Location: this restaurant wasn't on a busy or bustling street. It was maybe 1-2 blocks away from the main road and tucked away. Seating: they had outdoor and indoor options. We were surprised with how much space was inside - they had about 2 floors to accommodate guests in addition to their outdoor seating. We sat inside where we noticed there were a number of local patrons enjoying their meal and speaking with the owners. As soon as we noticed the locals here, we thought we finally found a gem. Food: - the bruschetta was the best of our various finds on our trip. It was the only one that had greens on it which we were thrilled to see (there was a restaurant we visited that only had tomatoes and no basil or arugula). - the carbonara was great too. The sauce really had the flavor of the guanciale. The waiter was kind enough to offer Parmesan on the side to add in addition to the meal (we didn't ask for it!). Based on the menu, the pasta was homemade. - the spaghetti with clams was amazing as well. The sauce was light and flavorful and tasted like the sea. Similar to the carbonara, the waiter offered fresh ground pepper without us asking. It's a nice gesture knowing that most Italian places will frown at you for wanting to alter the chef's creation (sometimes you just need a little extra kick!!). - the tirimisu was very light. It came in a single serve glass jar. Though, we did notice there wasn't a whole lot of lady fingers compared to the mascarpone cheese. Also, there was a lot of chocolate powder. Nonetheless, still tasty and the perfect amount for 1 person. Wait staff: we appreciated our waiter and the overall waitstaff. Most tourist traps have waiters waiting for you outside as you walk by already offering you a table before you even know if you want to eat there. These waiters did not offer us a table upon seeing us. It was only until we approached with intent to eat here that they gave us the time of day. Also, we did notice that all of the wait staff appeared to be of Italian descent. We went to a few other places with folks that didn't seem to be Italian which had us questioning the authenticity. Overall: it was a great experience and we were thrilled to have found this place given our bad luck with Roman tourist traps. We can say we had a good authentic meal before ending our trip!!
