I have been going to this Equinox for the past 4.5 years, ever since we moved from Manhattan to the New Jersey suburbs, and it's great. We were looking at a few different towns, but I'm glad we wound up in Summit because I love going to this gym. Pros (which are significant): - Like a typical Equinox, it's large, clean, and well-maintained, with all the usual amenities (including the chilled, eucalyptus-scented towels). They wipe down the mats well in between classes. - It's less crowded than the Manhattan locations I used to frequent. It's unusual to have to wait for equipment or a shower, etc. - The classes are great--and, honestly, the main reason to join Equinox (because if you need just a place to work out, there are cheaper options). I take practically everything (except spinning), and my favorite instructors include Kelsey, Michelle, and Jennifer. (John T. is also very good, but unlike the others, I think he still doesn't know my name, even though I've been doing his classes for years.) Renee does an excellent job overseeing the group-fitness program. - I haven't done much personal training here (it's expensive), but I did have a few good sessions with Marcus (and a friend of mine has been working happily with him for years now). - The Kids Club is a wonderful resource for parents. It's so nice to work out while someone watches your kids. It's $20 for two hours, but that's a bargain given the going rate for babysitting in Summit. - A while back, I complained about the lack of a juice/snack bar. Now they have one, courtesy of Essex Squeeze--and it's great! - I also previously mentioned the lack of built-in combination locks. Now they have them. Possible improvements (some admittedly minor, some not realistic): - I wish they had a larger stretching area or additional stretching areas; the one area they do have can get crowded. - They should check the treadmills more regularly to make sure they're in good working order; too frequently you'll encounter one that wobbles a little or makes weird noises. - A larger pool, heated to a higher temperature, would be nice. - The men's bathroom could use upgrading. There are only two stalls and two urinals. I wish the stall doors were the kind that went down to the floor and indicated whether the stall was occupied. They could also be cleaned more frequently. - I also wish they had some private all-gender bathrooms (like certain other Equinoxes). - Like every Equinox, they need to upgrade their toilet paper (Charmin Ultra Strong is the way to go). - I miss the old Kiehl's products. The Grown Alchemist cleanser doesn't lather or rinse off well, and its lotion doesn't get absorbed easily. (But replacing Kiehl's with Grown Alchemist was a company-wide decision.) read more

This location is ok. I like that everything is on one floor. Front desk staff is very hospitable. The barre studio does not offer the triple bar and this does not help barre classes to run as smoothly as some of the other classes at other locations. Locker rooms are quite small and filtration system can be improved for the drinking water. It is not as cold and does have a funny after taste. Wish they offered some outdoor benches to sit outside to enjoy a smoothie from the juice bar. read more

When I first checked out Equinox, I honestly wasn't sure about joining. My first interaction with an associate wasn't very clear, so I left feeling a little unsure. On my second visit though, Elle helped me out--she was super kind and really convinced me to go for it. At first, scheduling personal training was a bit rocky since my original trainer (I think Joseph Marcantonio) canceled last minute. But then I got paired with Emily, and honestly she's the sweetest and most amazing trainer. She made me feel comfortable right away and helped me build my routine from scratch. Even with a couple of bumps at the beginning, I'm really glad I joined. The staff is always friendly and attentive, and overall the experience has been worth it. read more

Popped into Equinox during a visit home for the holidays and here's how my experience went, Parking: Lots of parking available in the lot on a Tuesday midday. I can definitely see it being more of an issue during peak hours. No street parking to my knowledge. Front Desk Staff: There were two front desk attendants there when I arrived. One person helped me fill out a guest pass and then told me I was good. I was expecting a tour of the facility or at least guidance on where to go but the guy quickly went back to doing whatever else he was doing. Gym Floor: Whhhoooo... this place is tiny. When I figured my way around I realized that this is probably why the front desk staff didn't give me a tour or any guidance. Once you walk back it's just a big open floor plan and one floor. The place felt very full on a Tuesday afternoon around 1 so I couldn't even imagine what it's like during peak hours. There were about 6 trainers on the floor working with clients and doing pretty cool programs with them. Some of the equipment that they offer is.. (& forgive me if I forgot something I'm going off my memory), * 2 squat racks * 1 smith machine *small stretch area * about 10 benches maybe in the free weight section * group fitness studio (average size) * additional group fitness studio (tiny bit smaller) * pilates reformer studio * cardio section with lots of treads, elliptical, stair climber, bikes. Not sure if I saw one of the curved treads but yea * weight machines * cable cross setup with a good amount of extensions (tricep dip etc.) Locker Room: Typical Equinox facility decked out with all the great little amenities you could need (qtips, tampons, hair ties, lotion, etc). Everything was very clean and organized. Big ups to the housekeeping staff they're doing amazing. Group Fitness Class: I took their Mat Pilates class at 10:30 am. The class was held in their lower intensity studio room which also hosts classes like yoga and barre. We were let into the studio around 10:25 am after the maintenance crew were done cleaning and setting up. All the mats had mat towels on them and a sweat towel too. The instructor wasn't very friendly in my opinion and only really interacted with her regulars. The movements were great though and well balanced. I enjoyed the class but just felt weird the entire time, not a very welcoming space. I've been to a number of Equinox's in LA, OC, DC, and now here in New Jersey and this was by far my least favorite. Everyone felt very stuck up :( Beautiful and clean facility to be expected with Equinox though. read more

Nice location, nice equipment. Very cool that there is a saltwater pool. However, it could definitely be cleaner. (Cleanness is the reason I've stuck with Equinox despite the constantly-increasing costs.) I usually work out at the NY locations so may be generalizing too much for one visit but I've never seen this anywhere in a NYC Equinox. (These towels lay here during my entire workout and were still laying around when I left. Just doesn't feel like a "luxury gym.") read more

Beautiful gym, but they make it impossible to cancel. Wouldn't help me out by refunding my money the day after they billed me (it's not like we'd used the facility for the month yet) even after I explained that my husband lost his job and we need to cut expenses and won't be using the membership for the rest of the month. Heartless. Terrible customer service. We won't be back after the last month we paid for runs out, even when he gets a new job. We'll find a different gym. read more

Came here with a friend on a three day pass from my company As someone that's used to college gyms, this was quite the step up. There were personal trainers milling about, a large weight room and cardio area, pool, well maintained lockers, and an abundance of eucalyptus towels. There's also a juice bar area and a store that I never got to check out. In terms of weights and equipment, there's definitely a wide enough variety that it will cover most people's workout regimes. I personally use a variety of machines and different weight racks, and I never had to wait too long to use them. As for the pool, it was designed for two people to take laps, but I also never had to wait for to use it despite the limited amount of lanes. The shower and locker rooms also were stocked with Kiehl's products, which was definitely a welcome site. Based off my experience with Equinox, this gym definitely caters to people that are into a luxurious exercise experience. I would probably consider signing up for an Equinox in the future (Once I make more $$ haha). read more

I was a member here a few years back, and eventually had to cancel my membership due to frustration with a lack of management. The biggest issue is the gym is simply small. It is one floor, roughly 1:1 cardio and weights, and a small "stretch/abs" area that comfortable fits a handful of members at one time. As for the actual weight equipment, it's limited. There's mostly just one each of the bare-minimum gym essentials (bench press, squat rack, smith, etc...), save for two squat racks, bench presses, and cable stations. Two sets of each weight roughly up to 110 lbs. There's nothing notable equipment-wise, nothing making a membership any more than $50/mo justifiable. However, we're talking ~$150 monthly minimum for membership. The gym has limited equipment at best. The problem then is that you are often competing with trainers for equipment. Usually wouldn't be a problem, but trainers often multi-set and occupy equipment for their entire hour training session. You're generally left sitting and waiting for equipment you need, especially on a squat rack or cable station. If you try to work-in, the trainers can give you a hard time. They also often abandon their equipment when they're done and don't clean up. This becomes a safety hazard when there's a lot of equipment left around to trip over. I've brought this up to management during my membership, and was met with a "yes" man, but the issue persisted. Despite these frustrations, I've checked back in on guest passes frequently over the years with the intention on returning as a member. In my experience, though, the issues seem worse than ever. The positives should be mentioned, though the cons vastly outweigh the good: the facility is gorgeous, and clean. The cleaning staff is the best. read more

Equinox Summit - Typical late-afternoon workout. Two squat racks, barbell, bench press, and misc. equipment all racked and abandoned. Stayed 1-1/2 hours. - Gyms Near Me - Summit, New Jersey

Well appointed, clean gym with great equipment friendly and helpful staff. Definitely recommend

Very poor, disappointing, and unprofessional service across all levels, including the general manager of the site. I was promised to receive two FREE personal training sessions and a $100 gift card if i commit to a 1-year membership. However, not only did i NOT receive the gift card 2 months later but also I ended up with a $180 charge after my second personal training session (that was supposed to be free). It took multiple emails/calls back and forth to finally reverse their fraudulent $180 charge from my credit card and receive the $100 gift card I was originally promised. They were trying to avoid by all means giving me what I was simply promised before i signed the contract. I would highly recommend not believing anything they promise to give you with a membership, they want to lock you in with the contract and then will treat you very poorly. Check the contract thoroughly before you sign and try to explore all other gyms in the area before you commit to a 1-year of poor service with Equinox. read more

I'd like to preface this by saying I'm not a member and this is only based on a trial pass I received. First, it's a tiny gym. Probably one of the smallest if not the smallest I've been to (NYC excluded). Plenty of cardio equipment but very limited area when it comes to weights. The equipment is extremely basic and except for the curved treadmills, I didn't see anything you can't find at any other gym. There are bumper plates but also very limited. It's a bit cleaner than most commercial gyms but far from spotless. The locker rooms did seem pretty expansive and clean with some small amenities like razors and mouthwash. Overall a three star gym based on my limited experience, but the price of membership (I believe around $200/month) makes it way too overpriced especially in the suburbs of NJ read more

Transferred from the Hollywood equinox and its definitely a smaller gym but it has all the reasons I joined equinox , more space , pool, classes . Don't worry, there are still eucalyptus towels. Well maintained and connected to a physical therapy gym, so can watch people rehab from injuries. Lockers currently need to bring own lock. Not the modern autosave lockers. read more

I'm only giving this place one star because it's clean. Other than being clean this place is terrible!!! I was very excited to workout but once I started I quickly realized how depressing this place is. This place is good for old people who need some personal training. There's barely any equipment and the equipment they have is in terrible condition as I have illustrated in the video and photos. All the benches shake so it's very dangerous to use them. Almost dropped a dumbbell on myself because the whole bench shifted to one side, so I stopped doing the exercise. Why would I pay 160$ a month plus 300$ to sign up when I'm not even able to do my workout because there's no equipment and the equipment that they have is in terrible condition. Avoid this place it's not worth what they are charging!!! Update contacted equinox in response to my review as they have asked, but no reply!! read more

Equinox isn't for everyone as it's expensive and whether it's worth the money for you is an individual decision. This location is similar to others in that it's scrupulously clean and well maintained. It's not opulent but is it very consistent, which I value. There's always someone hovering in the changing rooms cleaning something, which to me is very welcome. The gym equipment, lockers, showers and similar are always in good working order and very clean. It's not usually very busy, parking is easy, and the pool is very pleasant as well. For this makes it much easier to pickup the motivation to stop by and get a work-out in during my day. I alternate between this club and the NYC ones with an 'All-Access membership for quite a lot of money, but I feel is worth it as I feel it's so easy to go. You can certainly work out for less but I got fed up of crammed gyms where equipment didn't work, lockers were often broken or were dirty with grimy showers - and there's none of that here. On the downside, I find the hours at Summit very limiting, and especially for the price. Closing at 8pm in the evening when the pool closes 1/2 an hour before at 7.30pm (does it really need to be 1/2 an hour?) seems very early, and on weekends it's 5pm. I don't usually finish work until 6pm, as I think is common in many jobs, and then it's scramble to get there when I go. For the money I wish they opened later a few nights a week. read more

clean, chic, and fun experience here at equinox. It has a very modern vibe which is different than some of the other gyms i have been to. Friendly staff. Variety of classes. Never over-crowded. Good energy.

Absolutely beautiful location. I don't know what it is about this location that makes me feel so at home and calm. The yoga studio is beautiful - I love taking classes here. The main floor doesn't feel cramped like other locations, and perhaps that's due to the open design. I haven't had an issue with parking yet (though I've heard sometimes it gets busy and it's difficult to find a spot). Honestly, I don't have any negatives here. Only positives. read more

I joined the Summit location with NYC privileges and really got good use out of my membership. Then, the downturn seemingly coinciding with the purchase of the L.A. Sports Club franchise crept in. Again, who knows? Here's the real kicker, try and quit this place and it gets really ugly regardless of how dutifully you jump through their hoops. It took me three months, including hand-delivered letters to the Membership Director and General Manager along with help from my insurance company to get $690 worth of overages reversed. At no time did anyone from EQ make an effort to handle this in a civil, human manner. Best to exercise outdoors! read more

Just signed up at the Equinox in Paramus as it's closer to me. Still testing it out so I don't want to review it yet as I've heard horror stories about Equinox's policies. Anywho, back to this location. I've been here a few times with my girlfriend. This is a shi-shi gym. The type of gym you join just so you can accessorize your BMW key with an Equinox membership keychain. The type of gym where your outfit matters and if you aren't wearing Lululemon, pray to God that your spin class isn't full of bored housewives that love to gossip and who would be appalled that you wore some Modell's sweats. This gym (both NJ locations as I see so far) aren't nearly up to par as the other Equinox locations especially in NYC and SoCal. I feel like the Jersey Equinox's are watered down. A 7/10 when compared to the bigger ones. Now the reason to join this gym is because this is as close to a luxury gym as you will get in NJ. It's super clean, Keihls products, spacious, modern and never super packed. The classes are good and I haven't had any problems with staff being rude the times I've gone. But then again, they were trying to sell me the $150 membership. It's expensive but if this environment (trendy, upscale, fashionable) makes you want to work out more then I think it's worth it. But honestly, you can get the same machines and probably even better ones and better classes at another gym at half the price. It's a social gym. For people who like to feel exclusive, are trendy and the under 35 crowd. They are very technological forward. Big plasma screens detailing the next class, a great smartphone app and website. Im young and I fall for all these gimmicks. I'm the type of girl who wears makeup to the gym, gets spray tans and shops at Lululemon so seeing others like that motivates me more. For me it's worth it cause the ambiance makes me want to go to the gym. They do need to add more classes though. Most classes are in the morning or right after work (5-7) which sucks cause thats when it's the most crowded. They should add more early afternoon and late evening classes. read more

I enjoy it. I chose Equinox in Summit for the pool, the heavy bag, the weights and the occasional massage. It delivers on all counts. I have the heavy bag set when there are no classes, I swim on the off hours, and do the weights and classes during peak times. If you want a cheaper gym and don't really care about the machines, there are plenty to chose from. 24hour fitness is one. Equinox is not that. I have always thought of Equinox as a sort of wellness destination. If you have beefs about the contracts, then don't sign them. So very simple. Read it, marinate on it, then decide. If the class occupancy or schedules have you in a snit, then plan for it. If you signed up for only the pool, then you need to be cognizant that other people want that pool also. Plan around high traffic hours. Vet the gym before you sign. I find it funny people give an entire business 2 stars cuz it's "hot". You are in the Garden State and having a warm gym relaxes your muscles mitigating strain. I used to frequent SOHO, the West Village and Rockefeller Equinox. This is a nice gym but you probably won't see the models and David Duchovny on the treadmill. read more

Relatively clean and new gym with a huge parking lot. Retail area on the right when you walk in, kids club and juice bar on the left when you're headed into the gym itself. Floor set up is different than I would expect. 2 full racks of weights in the middle of the gym, plenty of machines for cardio on the right and a small place to stretch on the left. Very big studio for group workout classes. Women's room had lots of great products such as Kiehls moisturizer, hair ties, spray on deodorant, razors, shower caps and towels. It even had a steam room and a coed pool separated into two swimming lanes. Didn't get a chance to check out the spa but it is next to the pool. This place definitely has more than the basics so if you're looking for luxury- this is the gym for you. read more

I normally frequent the Equinox in West Hollywood, CA. This location is very new, so it's not yet totally packed. There is never an issue getting an elliptical machine and all of the machines are very new. This place is not maintained as well as my usual location. There is never anyone cleaning up in the locker room area which means that the sinks, floors can be dirty. Eucalyptus towel refrigerator is not kept fully stocked. Also, this gym is indeed way too HOT. The temp needs to be set way lower to keep us from sweating before we even get started. Staff is helpful (nicer than in NYC), and I don't use personal trainers. Still, it is the closest location for me when visiting mom and I love the whole concept of Equinox. read more

Just joined and am impressed. I was a member at Equinox in NYC and it was not a friendly experience. At Summit, everyone acknowledges you and they seem sincere. What a great gym! I came here for a trial and got to experience what the gym has to offer. It has all of the amenities you could ever imagine or need (and maybe some that are a little excessive). For example, the bathrooms are fully stocked with razors, mouthwash, shampoo, conditioner, etc. Everything is super clean and you can tell that they make it a priority to ensure cleanliness. The equipment is pretty standard, it's essentially the same as you'd see in any other gym. In fact, I thought it was a little outdated as compared with the gym that I currently go to but I'm sure it gets the job done. There is also a day care, physical therapy, coat check, juice bar, classes, and personal training. Of course, this all comes at a price which is quite hefty as compared with the average gym. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford it! #goals read more

I take my fitness pretty seriously, so I have a very high standard for the service and facility, especially if I am in the 3 digit price range. If you're in the city and you want a high end gym, this is pretty much a no brainer for me. However, outside of the city, it is a whole different game. Gyms outside the city have access to way more square footage, so they can afford to offer you a lot more. I had very high hopes when I came here on a guest pass. First thing I noticed when I entered was that it seemed pretty small. They have all the necessary equipment, but the quantity was low, so if there was ever a good amount of traffic, you would definitely need to wait around to get the machine you wanted. I don't remember if this Equinox has a pool, but even if they did, it is probably only a couple lanes since the place is so tiny. It felt like a classier version of planet fitness, to be honest. However, it wasn't all bad. Perhaps the best selling point of Equinox is their classes, which are free with your membership. The classes are small so the instructor can give you more personalized assistance. I took the yoga class and the teacher there was among the best I've ever had, and the fact that the class was small I got a lot of personal corrections. They also have mint towels in a refrigerator, which I thought was a nice little touch. I was also impressed with their showers, which are beautiful, but there aren't that many, so if it gets busy I'd imagine that would be frustrating to have to wait after your workout just to clean up. With that said, it is still no competition in either price or service with Lifetime Fitness in Florham Park, unless you hate kids, since Equinox is 18+ whereas Lifetime Fitness allows kids (I think it's 13+ on the workout floor though). read more

I loved equinox for the first few weeks or so. Then the shine of the place began to wear off for me. Equinox locks you in to a year contract. They have childcare there but it is a really small area and you have to pay additionally to leave your child there every time (10 bucks). The Keihls products were great but I developed an allergy to them and I could not use them. They only offer classes in the early morning, morning and evening- no afternoon classes. It's never packed- that is a plus. The classes are good but most of them are for really hard core gym people. If you are just a regular person who has not been working out for a while, you will not feel comfortable in the classes. Most of the people who are members at equinox are not the nicest people in the world. The vibe there amongst the staff and the members is very business like and there is not a lot of camaraderie. The spin room is small and frequently the little computers on the bikes are broken- this sucks because the instructors rely on those computers for you to be able to follow along in the classes. Also there is a system where you can book a bike but there are always people who either book the bike and don't show up until the class starts and make a scene to get you to get off their bike, or people who are on your bike when you have reserved them. It is a flawed system that appeals to the privilege and the entitlement of the people who go to equinox. There is one thing that I loved there- they have refrigerators with eucalyptus scented towels inside that are awesome after a workout. Equinox is inside a beautiful building, but the pool is the size of a postage stamp- it is a salt water pool though and they play new age music. They do not offer aqua exercise classes. The yoga studio is beautiful and the equipment is top notch. Basically this is a gym for people with a lot of money who want to spend it on trainers which are ridiculously expensive- $120 a session. I ended up not being able to wait until the end of my membership to find a new place. And you have to inform them 45 days before you want to end your membership and speak to someone in person in order to do it. There are a lot of other options for gyms in and around Summit. Check every one of them out before settling on one. I wish I had looked around more before ending up at equinox. I did not like it there at all in the end. read more
