I have never had a bad experience with Envision. They care about my eye health and have repeatedly gone the extra mile with my eyewear.

I have been calling for days trying to get an appointment for my husband to get his fairly new glasses repaired. Given the cost of the glasses, in my opinion a customer should be able to get reasonably immediate service; I called on Monday and today is Thursday. This is unacceptable. read more

The staff are courteous and there is a wide selection of frames available. HOWEVER, they are out to sell and charge as much as they can get away with. For the years I went there, they consistently tried to sell me a higher priced frame, sunglasses as well as regular glasses, etc. etc. The final straw were charges related to surgery. Three months before getting multi-focal lens replacements (both eyes), they were trying to sell me new glasses! $600 for a pair that would only be needed for 3 months! Also, after the lens replacements were completed, I had to pay $300 out of my own pocket (not covered by insurance) for a "follow-up". They did tests that were not included, or requested, or that I was informed of, and charged me MORE money. Absolutely NOT recommended. read more

I appreciate the doctors and staff at Envision Eyecare so much. I've worn glasses for 17 years, flirted with contacts twice, but decided glasses work best for me. The doctors are thorough & excellent. The frames they stock are varied and really stylish. The staff is SO good and honest about which frames work for your face and which don't. I saw some reviews disappointed by the prices. As far as I know, Envision doesn't claim to be a discount practice/frame shop. They explain any potential add on fees to your exam or lenses and allow you to decline if you aren't interested or can't afford it. I'll be a patient and buyer for to foreseeable future. read more

Megan Wells the optical consultant spent over an hour with me helping me pick out frames. We started with well over 10 pairs of frames (after we basically walked around the entire store) & then we used a proceeds of elimination that actually worked well to narrow down to 3 pairs. I've never received so much help finding frames. So for this reason alone, I highly recommend coming here. The actual eye exam went well too. The eye doctor told me to eat more leafy greens, which I thought was great advice. He also gave me 3 reasons why I need to wear sunglasses. This business got great reviews, so I thought I'd give them a try. After a sales pitch, I caved and purchased a 6-month supply of a supplement I didn't need. I just wanted to purchase a pair of glasses, but they tried to sell me two pair. The glasses took 4 weeks and were not correctly made. Still waiting to get the lenses remade - hard to even get an appointment to get the replacement lenses ordered - indicates customer service is not a priority. I could not be happier with the service I received at Envision Eyecare. Even during a pandemic, I felt safe and cared for. As soon as I entered, I realized this was not your average eye care facility. I received personal attention immediately. I was fortunate to work with Stephanie, who was terrific. She was very honest about what frames looked best on my face and helped guide me through the process of finding the perfect frame. Some people have complained about the price here. You get what you pay for. Envision provides excellent service, has unique frames and a full range of products. Dr. Gohlson is thorough and personable, will go the extra to make sure you are satisfied and well cared for, as in the case of special eye problems or diseases. The staff, especially Jennifer, is there to make sure you have what you need. They have a range of prices, but always recommends what is best for you. Yes, there are cheaper places to go, but I do not recommend those...having had experiences ranging from receiving the wrong prescription to having broken frames which were not guaranteed. BOTTOM LINE: What should have happened: "Why don't we order one box of your current contact lens brand now, so you do not run out waiting to try this other brand we want you to try out?" Question for audience: Are contact lens prescriptions restricted specific to only one brand? If you want to try another brand, do you need to repeat the whole exam with your Dr (if within a reasonable time frame)? 6/26/17, I went for exam for prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Ended up spending a whole lot more but that's been covered in other reviews. (377$ vs quote of 150$). I stressed that I only had a month maximum worth of contacts left, and I am fine with what I have been wearing for years. A different brand was suggested, and I am willing to try the new brand (more expensive), but I didn't want to get stuck with no contacts. Dr wanted me to try another brand. Reasonable, ok...but I cannot run out of contacts. Dr. stressed to staff at appt...please, we do not want this person to run out of contacts to wear. I appreciated that and felt like all would be well. Well, it took until 7/15 to get in the trial pair, and although I have repeatedly explained the situation, the techs will not give me info/scrip so I could get some of my regular old brand of contacts in time for a trip 7/25. Their price for my old brand is very good! So this was not a matter of trying to keep me from buying elsewhere...this was simply not helping me not to run out of contact lenses. I have been assured a prescription for my old brand of contacts will be printed and ready for pick up at my appt 7/21 to try trial brand, AND a second trial pair would be made available so that I have coverage while out of town, Will update this after that... Update: 7/21 No scrip ready, and person had heard nothing about a second trial pair promised. Read on.... Trial pair "A" was weak for one eye, a failure, I could not see! I have been wearing contacts since 1971. I have very poor vision. In contacts I have worn -9.5/-9.5 (both eyes), same brand, for at least 5 years. No issues, simply needed an updated scrip to purchase more. Trial pair was -9.0/9.5. Couldn't see! So that pair was thrown away at the office. I left with yet another brand trial pair "B" , -9.5 both eyes...so, I still have the problem that I only have this trial pair and one old pair and am leaving for trip 7/25. Should I be thankful they even pair "B" available? Person had not heard of promise made yesterday for a second trial pair in addition to original pair. However, supplied trial pair "B" because I could not see with trial pair "A". I was even told they could not legally let me leave and drive in trial pair "A". ! Also found out, even though at least 3 brands of contacts can work for me, I HAVE to pick one because...The "Policy" is to only write a prescription for one brand. I am not thrilled with the policy, but at least now I know it is "The Policy". Although...allowing me to buy a small supply of my old brand seems a reasonable request...Policy prohibited doing that AND trying new kind, apparently? If one of the numerous people I spoke with in the office had told me "The Policy" in the multiple calls/inquiries over the past 2 weeks that would have saved lots of frustration, and does not seem to be a difficult policy to communicate to employees so they in turn can inform patients. Armed with knowledge of "The Policy", I could make decisions within the given parameters. . Also, I got different answers, promises, quotes and so on from different people, and no-one agrees with what another said, and then would get defensive about it all. Sigh. I hope the trial pair works well, since I am stuck for now, but I suspect in the end I will be going with the same brand I had originally (Which is also least expensive of the three brands). Unless there is an improvement of some area with trial pair, why change? but, so far ...no improvement notable. Next...glasses...however now I a bit wary of the prescriptions, since the "trial pair" of contacts was written at a strength level in one eye that I could not see in.... It would be awful to have the same thing happen with glasses as has happened with contact lenses. Will update when I return and I hope the 2 pairs of contacts I have (One pair already used, and the trial pair I am currently wearing) last until I can get more. It would have been comforting to have a back-up, as originally promised!!! Since 1971...I have never without backup pair(s) contacts...until now, the contact lens merry-go-round. read more

How many ways can I say this place sucks? The workers there are probably former used car sales people. Trained in the tactics of bait and switch and other used car sales techniques. They will pump you up, tell you how great you look in the glasses be super friendly and all kinds of stuff even give you free coffee from a fancy coffee station. They'll tell you what a great deal your getting and how hard they're worked to give you that deal. Until they tell you that the price of the service for glasses is almost $1,500. They won the best of Asheville for many years, most likely because they have a good marketing scheme. I've worn glasses since I was 7 years old. My titanium pair of frames just broke and they're not even a year old. Do not believe their hype! Stay away from envision. I initially had to go back about 6 times to get the glasses adjusted just so I could use them. They will try to scam you into buying suplements and taking fancy but useless pictures of your eyes. I'll never be swindled by them again. I hope you don't either. read more

nice folks, certainly friendly and likely competent, but i can't recommend them and won't be back. i went for an eye exam. while waiting, i heard a tech selling a fellow patient on new glasses. 'what kind of lenses would you like to take home today?' it doesn't seem that onerous in print, but it sounded like something you'd hear from a used car dealer. everyone in the office is quite pleasant...and has clearly taken a course from some kind of consultant on maximizing revenue. among other indignities, they tried to sell me supplements before i left. the doctor didn't just recommend supplements, they wanted me to buy the supplements from envision. ick. (you can get similar from sam's for MUCH less.) honestly, i left horrified, and shared my feelings with someone from the office a few days later. i was therefore surprised to receive a note in the mail sometime after that suggesting i recommend them to my friends. um, no. one very cool thing they had was an iPad app which allows you to see what you look like with various frames--helpful for very nearsighted folks. read more

Just a few warnings about eye glass places in Asheville. When I purchased glasses from here, I wasn't told how much the exam was going to be. It was A LOT . Since it's also normal that prescriptions are transferable, I expected that IT WAS NOT and was not in the fine print. Ask these questions before setting up an appointment. I'm going elsewhere for my next pair of glasses where the exam will cost about $120 less than at this company. The people are nice and, I received a follow-up after a year to come in to get my eyes checked. I asked what the cost would be (lesson learned) and was told it would be free. When I made the appt. through a different person, the price skyrocketed. I didn't ask why this time and looked elsewhere where the cost for everything is "up front" and less expensive. Last year I did contact the Exec. Dir. of Optometry licensing to better understand the legalities of a practice. Envision did nothing wrong and he made it clear they make their money on selling eye glasses. That makes sense. So, I shopped around and found fine glasses for a lot less. I went to Envision Eye care from Tunnel Vision because my healthcare coverage changed. They were close to my office, so convenient. During my first visit they were very welcoming. I bought glasses, sunglasses, and contacts. Almost $2,000 worth of product! They are very talented with their ability to sale their product. I was unhappy with the way the sunglasses fit, so I went back for an adjustment. Now, this is 2020, in the heat of covid. The sunglasses kept sliding off of my face. The adjusted several times to the point that I thought that it was the best that it was going to be. I left and just never wore the $300 pair of sunglasses except one time when I didn't have any sunglasses in my vehicle. On my most recent annual visit I explained all of this and left my sunglasses there for the optical manager to look at. Apparently, there is a small scratch in the frame, so they couldn't do anything. After talking with them, they let me know there is a 45 day return policy. They never told me about this policy at the initial purchase or when I came back unsatisfied for an adjustment. Point is, they try and sale you up. Whatever they can do - tell you how good you look regardless of if it's the truth. The doctor tried to tell me that my one year old glasses had hair line scratches so I should buy another pair (for $500) because I would be able to take advantage of a discount. Push, push, push for their highest dollar. They're not about the person!!! read more

Very pricey. My glasses weren't what I ordered. Also they scheduled me a follow up without my knowledge. I get a message on my phone reminding me of a follow up, this was a little bit after my initial visit, stating specifically I would be charged if I don't show up. I was surprised because I was had no intention of going there again but I thought maybe one was scheduled and I just forgot. When I went back I made a point of asking if there were any future appointments scheduled and the receptionist confirmed they had scheduled another exam next year. I know full well I didn't schedule another exam! Cancelled that appointment. read more

Excellent eye care. Cost of lens and frames is noncompetitive and you are free to have the glasses' prescription filled where you like. Just beware of new $50 charge for broken appointment within 24 hours. Patently unfair in my opinion. Things happen. Will they give you a $50 discount if you are not seen at the exact time of your appointment? No, they will not. I challenge them to institute the $50 discount if you are not taken for your appointment when it is scheduled. That is fair since they have now made the $50 fee for a broken appointment within 24 hours. Apparently, you cannot cancel at noon for an 11 am appointment the next day. Thank you. read more

I have been a patient for several years, and I have yet to have a an eye doctor as talented as him. He gets my prescription right the first time, the staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. I have had to go through a "growing pain" with a new perscrption since I have arrived into the 40's, and it has not been easy. Yet, the Envsion Eyecare team has done me right again. I have been needing and using glasses for over a good decade, prescription that is. I had looked at the reviews and Envision Eyecare had some wonderful reviews. I guess they could have been generated not necessarily by patients. Due to the reviews I decided to go with Envision. Yes, I must say all of the staff is extremely helpful, patient, and caring. However, I was very much pressured to buy their vitamins and to have a particular exam done every 3 months in which I was not going to see a doctor, but I only was supposed to look through some lenses for a minute. I was told there was a chance I could develop macular degeneration. This exam would have cost me each time $40. The way the Optometrist phrased was very broad. After I asked him several detailed and specific questions he wasn't able to evade me anymore and ended up admitting that EVERYONE could at one point or another develop macular degeneration. I knew I had to pay for the eye exam since I had it already done. I also bought the frames and lenses from Envision, but nothing else. I wasn't aware I could have taken my prescription elsewhere for frames and lenses. I go to an optometrist once a year to have my eyes checked out thoroughly, which includes checking for macular degeneration. In the beginning of this year I went to back to my previous/ old optometrist. I was told I have very healthy eyes. Healthy eyes does not mean that one does not need glasses; these two are not one and the same. My preferred optometrist office is not as sugary, over the top, and syrupy sweet, but they do truly care about me as a patient and I know they are professional in their conduct. I do not have any vision insurance, but I also do not mind paying a justified amount for my exam, top lenses and good frames. What I do mind is, if someone tries to take me for a ride as Envision tried to. I am truly appalled by Envision Eyecare and their lack of any professionalism! read more

My doctor was able to address my dry eye problem with an eye wash (none of my previous doctors have said there was anything I could do about it but drops). He also told me how my blue sunglasses cause macular degeneration (yikes)! Staff is so friendly and absolutely recommend this place. Love this place! My family has been coming to Dr. Golson since he came to Asheville several years ago. He's great with the kids, has an easy "bedside manner" and gave an in-depth exam-even caught an eye issue that our ophthalmologist missed! I always feel well-cared for from beginning to end. Excellent care - I didn't have to wait long after arriving for my appointment. The team handled my tests with quick expert care. I felt comfortable in their waiting room and during the exam. I am fortunate that I don't need glasses (YET) but that my overall health is looked at through my eyes and they gave me great advice on macular degeneration (something I'm prone to) . Whether you have good vision or not, they will rob you blind! While the staff is friendly and helpful, I can honestly say I feel saddened and appalled by the way the doctor overcharges and sells you unnecessary items. Like others on this review, I was told I should take supplements to stave off "possible" macular degeneration. Trusting a doctor to look out for my best interests, I bought the supplements, but I'm not sure I even need them. Same goes for the contact lenses they were going to order for me. They charge $189 for 90 lenses; I bought them online for $138, including all fees and shipping. (The front desk person told me that once I paid online fees, the prices would be the same). Envision also charges a "contact lens evaluation fee" of around $120 which is some kind of phony service with "perks" such as free shipping (if you buy a year's worth) and the ability to return unused ones if your prescription changes within the year (whose does and how would one know?). It was not an optional fee. I had previously gone to Asheville Eye Associates for many years and will be returning to their quality care and reasonable prices (I only switched because Envision was more convenient). I will never go back to Envision and will always tell others not to. read more

I know that many optometrists make a majority of money selling glasses & contacts, but the sales tactics at Envision are over-the-top and downright distasteful. Hard sell all the way. After the exam the doctor suggested supplements for macular degeneration. I said okay, but I did not realize at the time that he was going to try to sell them to me from his office. On the way out to choose frames, the assistant grabbed two bottles and told me the price (nearly $200!!!) I balked and said "No thanks." The assistant must have gone back to tell the doctor that I refused the supplements because a few minutes later the doctor came out to the "sales" floor and insisted that I really needed these supplements. I kept saying no thank you, but he went on and on. He was so pushy that the woman helping me choose frames started to look embarrassed. Finally I said that I'd think about it just to get him to leave me alone. He didn't stop with the sales pitch. He instead changed direction and insisted that I really needed Rx sunglasses as well. My insurance does not cover sunglasses and I certainly didn't have the $700 in my budget for them! He was visibly flustered when I said I would order Rx sunnies from Zenni (less than $50) if I really needed them. I shouldn't have even ordered my glasses from this office after that. I did not feel like a patient at all. By this time I felt defensive and guarded, like I might feel after being accosted by a shady salesman at a used car lot. The only positive part of this experience was the nice woman helping me to choose frames. I will never go back to this office nor would I recommend them to anyone. Even if you have lots of money to spend, I think it is unethical for a doctor to sell the supplements they prescribe. read more

Superficially the nicest people in the world, but they'll try to squeeze every penny they can from you.

So let me paint the picture for you. Just had my second baby four months ago. Starting to try and focus on me a little to regain my sanity and rejoin society. Moms know what I mean. All the sudden you feel like you're loosing your cool. Clothes don't fit you yet. Start to get jealous that your partner gets to go out to work. I had a tight budget and so I really spent time going to all the available shops. Priced out what you get for the money-quality- customer service- ambiance! Because guess what- glasses are expensive everywhere!! I was greeted by a friendly receptionist. I had hot coffee from a handcrafted mug. I browsed through very original frames. You don't see these anywhere else. I checked. I wanted to make a statement but not have the glasses wear me. Christine Maiello is your professional consultant through this process.
