This is a concept with a proud history in France. I have fond memories of visiting L'Ami Louis in Paris, Robert Parker's favorite bistro, where they serve nothing but Entrecôte and Pommes Frites. When you do only one thing, you need to do it perfectly, and sadly, that was not the case here. I really wanted to like this restaurant more. Admittedly, it had only been open three days when we went, but they failed at the one thing that mattered, which was serving a great piece of beef. Everything else about the meal was great. The ambiance was wonderful. The service was good. The wine list, though short, is well chosen to accompany their sole entrée. The salad was good. The French bread, although a bit dried out, was the right type and served with an authentic mustard. The fries were superb. The sauce served with the meat, which each restaurant handles differently, was also terrific, a herbaceous version of Bearnaise, if you will. The meat, though, was not so much. It was tough, largely flavorless, and riddled with gristle, not just mine but my wife's also, admittedly, probably from the same cow. The waiter, when he saw that my plate was covered with half-chewed pieces that I could not manage to reduce to something that could be swallowed, apologized and said that they were changing suppliers. Although the samples they got from this supplier had been good, they had received complaints about the meat from others, not just us. That's all well and good, and I appreciate his honesty. When the bill arrived and no adjustment had been made for what was obviously a collection of meat, I felt that acknowledging the problem was only half of the solution. We finished the meal with a delightfully light and exquisitely flavored chocolate mousse and a nicely done crème brûlée, although for my taste the crust could have been a bit more burnt. Both were excellent. Sadly, I probably would not return to give them another chance, but that does not mean that they don't deserve another look. If they get their meat supplier under control, it has the potential to be a very good choice for a very affordable and traditional French steak. Until then, since there are no other options on the menu, I can't be any more enthusiastic.

New French restaurant just opened in Gastown with a simple $44 prix fixe menu including a walnut salad and steak frites. The walnut salad was fresh but very basic. The baguette was also a bit disappointing, and I was surprised it came with mustard instead of butter. The steak was definitely the highlight. I ordered medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. The meat quality was great. Their signature sauce was rich and creamy with a slightly sweet and tangy flavor. It wasn't really my favorite pairing with steak, but that's just personal preference. The fries were amazing--thin, crispy, not greasy at all, and they offer free refills! We also tried the chocolate mousse after it was recommended by the table next to us. Super smooth and silky with a nice orange aroma. The interior is beautiful with a classic French bistro vibe. There are entrances on both sides of the restaurant--one opens onto a pretty sketchy back alley, while the other faces the main Gastown street with a lovely patio, which is definitely the better way to arrive.

Follow @jfoodreviews on instagram Parisian Simplicity in the Heart of Gastown: A Review of Entrecôte Restaurant If you've ever yearned for the no-nonsense elegance of a classic Parisian steakhouse, Entrecôte Restaurant (located at 115-12 Water St, Vancouver) delivers exactly that with effortless charm. Operating on the timeless formula of doing one thing and doing it exceptionally well, this spot brings the iconic L'Entrecôte concept to British Columbia. Here is how the experience shapes up, from the first bite of bread to the final spoonful of dessert. The Concept: "La Formule" ($44) At the core of the menu is La Formule, a beautifully streamlined, two-course prix fixe menu for $44. There is no agonizing over mains here--you sit down, and the kitchen gets straight to work. * The Bread & Butter: Dinner kicks off with a crusty, rustic baguette served alongside a beautifully whipped, savory butter presented in a rustic wooden bowl. Simple, tactile, and highly addictive. * Course 1: Fresh Green Walnut Salad: A crisp pile of vibrant green leaves lightly dressed in a bright, acidic house vinaigrette and topped with buttery walnut halves. It is light, palate-cleansing, and the perfect prelude to the main event. * Course 2: Entrecôte Steak-Frites: The main attraction. Slices of perfectly cooked, tender steak arrive swimming in a pools of their signature "secret sauce"--a rich, herbaceous, buttery, yellowish-green emulsion. Piled high on top is a mountain of golden, hand-cut frites that do an excellent job of soaking up every last drop of that legendary sauce. The Sweet Finale (Desserts à la Carte) While the main menu is locked in, the dessert menu offers plenty of room to play. If you go with a group, sharing is highly recommended so you can sample the spread: The Dessert Lineup * Mousse au Chocolat ($12): Rich, velvety, and deeply chocolatey, elevated by a subtle, bright whisper of orange. * Tiramisu ($12): Boldly claiming to be "the best in town," it lives up to the hype with a perfect balance of espresso-soaked ladyfingers and light, airy mascarpone. * Le Vacherin chocolate($14): A dramatic, towering showstopper. It layers crisp, sweet meringue with chocolate ice cream, all draped in a decadent chocolate and berry coulis. The Verdict Value: 9/10 | Vibe: 8.5/10 | Taste: 9/10 Entrecôte Restaurant successfully strips away the pretense of fine dining while keeping all of the flavor. For $44, La Formule offers some of the best value in Vancouver for a steak dinner, and the quality of the execution--especially that secret sauce--keeps you wanting more. It's an ideal spot for a date night, a catch-up with friends, or anyone looking to escape to Paris for an evening without leaving Gastown.

We came here for a Winnie the Pooh Afternoon Tea. Oh my goodness...it far exceeded my expectations!…read moreHats off to the kitchen staff for coming up with such a creative and whimsical afternoon tea. First thing that caught my eye was the cover of the afternoon tea menu. It was red with a picture of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin printed upon it in a shiny gold colour. When flipped over, it had the menu for the afternoon tea printed upon it. I was super impressed that they even had a separate menu printed for Vegetarians. (I opted for a Vegetarian menu). There was a cute little ceramic jar that was shaped like a Honey pot, and it had sugar cubes in it! Then there was this booklet that was pages long, and divided into Chapters. It was basically the menu again, but in the form of a small book. Each Chapter of the book described different foods from the afternoon tea. The last chapter listed all the different tea flavors one could choose. When we sat down and read this menu, I heard more than one person at the table say that they wanted to take this menu home. Guess what? For the price of $25, one could take this menu home as a memento of this extraordinary afternoon tea? Maybe I'm a bit of a sucker, but how often does one get to go to an afternoon tea as special as this? And I've always been a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh. So I coughed up the $25 and brought one of these menus home with us! Food was sooo good. I loved how warm the scone was when I cut it open. This was one of my favourite items. The sandwiches were amongst my favourites as well. As phenomenal as the experience was, I do think there are a few things which could have improved the experience. For one, a bit more service would have been appreciated. I had to wave my hand in the air to get our server's attention so that I could ask her to refill our tea pots with more hot water. Would have been nice if she'd just come around a bit more often and offered to top it up for us. Tea cozies on our tea pots might have been another improvement. A lot of my tea cooled down by the time I got to it. I like my tea hot but I didn't get in very many cups of hot tea as there was a lot of food to eat and by the time I was ready to pour myself some tea to wash down my food, the tea was...not so hot anymore. Oh, and while most of the food was appropriately sized, there was this one chocolate cookie sandwich that was really gigantic and suggested to be eaten last. We were so full already from all the other foods in the afternoon tea, and then to squeeze that giant cookie sandwich in...right at the end? A smaller and daintier cookie sandwich would have been preferred. It was overall a truly phenomenal experience. Yes, I do think it could have been slightly better, but I do emphasize the word "slightly". The points lost were so minor...I would still highly recommend this afternoon tea to anyone. It was well worth the money. It's offered every weekend for now but not sure how long they'll keep this around so if you're interested in a Winnie the Pooh themed afternoon tea, I'd make a reservation for it ASAP!

The setting is cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Staff was lovely and we were not rushed. Unfortunately they require full payment at the time of booking including a tip % automatically applied. I find this quite distasteful. It is one thing to pay a deposit to secure our spot ....but asking for the tip for a service yet to be provided is terrible. My friend really wanted to go and therefore I agreed to it this one time but I would never do it again.

The short rib stroganoff was deeply savory, rich, tender ribbons of beef folded into wide noodles with plenty of earthy wild mushrooms. It's deeply satisfying, though with all that rich sauce, the last few bites can feel pretty heavy. We also tried the savoury Dutch baby, which had great puffed, crispy edges and a custardy center that held up well against its savory toppings. The cocktail program is just as strong, with well-balanced drinks that don't lean overly sweet. The Service Friendly, down-to-earth, and attentive. We were greeted warmly at the entrance and guided upstairs without any awkward waiting. Drink orders were taken quickly, water was refilled consistently, and our server had honest recommendations when we asked to compare a couple of share plates. Pacing between drinks and hot food felt natural and relaxed. The Ambiance Easily the standout feature of the experience. Set inside a converted heritage house, it feels like dining in a bohemian, antique-filled living room. Between the fringed vintage lamps, dark moody walls, eclectic framed art, and soft amber lighting, the vibe is cozy, quirky, and distinctly romantic. It does get a little dim once the sun sets, and some tables in the smaller rooms are arranged fairly close together, but the character makes up for it.

I made reservations in advance. When we arrived rather than being welcomed we were advised of when we needed to exit. Unfortunate. We sat, my gal excited for the evening was perusing the wine list to select something special. Three times we were approached to see if we were ready to order food. We hadn't selected wine. We had been there less than 10 minutes. We were told at that point (for the second time) when we had to leave by. We selected a top bottle and when we ordered were told what time we needed to vacate the table. At that point I had enough. I wasn't prepared to spend that much on a beautiful bottle of wine (and dinner) to be harassed the entire time we enjoyed it. Very embarrassed I had to ask my guest if we could leave. Went to Cin Cin on Robson and had a proper dining experience with professional service. I will NEVER return to sequel despite living a block away with significant disposable income. Cannot recommend strong enough you avoid this place and I hope the wonderful musicians find a venue close to soon. I stand by this as I comment never, reach out directly.

But at 7:00 PM we were told they still didn't have a table because the terrace was closed due to rain and they were trying to accommodate everyone inside. The problem is that the rain was clearly in the forecast all day, so this did not feel unexpected. It honestly felt like the restaurant overbooked and was not prepared for the situation. We ended up waiting around 20 minutes past our reservation time, sitting in a crowded entrance area with many other people also waiting for tables. It left a pretty disappointing first impression, especially when the table had already been booked in advance. The service also felt rushed toward the end. The receipt was brought to us immediately after we finished eating without us asking for it, which gave the impression they wanted to turn the table over as quickly as possible. That said, the lobster poutine was actually very good. The chocolate bonbons, however, were honestly disappointing. Three very small, dry chocolate candies for $15 felt excessive and not worth ordering.
