the kitchen ran with such quiet élégance, no drama and chaos like in 'the bear'
    Nat L.

located by vancouver house, just steps from the giant spinning chandelier, this little french bistro had me craving cuisine française ever since i watched pot-au-feu (the taste of things). i made a reservation, scored a coveted bar seat overlooking the kitchen, and settled in for what felt like dinner and a show. only a duo, master chef and sous chef ran the line, moving with the quiet grace of a perfectly timed waltz, none of the shouting or frantic energy of "the bear" or "hell's kitchen". every movement felt deliberate: a mandolin slicing with precision, steaks slowly cooking sous vide, the prep counter wiped down frequently between courses, and a blowtorch kissed across a chef's knife for a few seconds before cutting into the beurre composé. the little touches made it special, beurre so good it deserved its own menu listing, the deft chiffonade of herbs, and the way seasoning was sprinkled with finesse. the kitchen ran with such quiet élégance, and it all made sense when i learned it's the same owner of ça marché crêperie. we started with escargots in garlic herb butter, served with two slices of sourdough so perfect we ordered more, this time grilled, with onion and anchovy butter. for mains, steak frites with a crisp green salad. the hanger steak, notoriously tricky, was sous vide to medium rare, so tender it barely needed the knife. the frites were thin, golden, and fried in beef tallow, deeply savoury, salty, and not greasy. the moules frites arrived in a fragrant white wine broth with shallot, garlic, parsley, and more of those glorious frites. every moule was plump and sweet, and i practically inhaled the broth (demurely, of course). i watched them prepare a salade niçoise with meticulous care, selecting each butter lettuce from an airtight container and gently hand coating it with dressing, making a mental note to return for it next time, as i was too full to order it this visit. brunch, too, is now on my list. because sometimes, you don't just eat french food, you watch it being made slowly, with love and savoir faire, like in the movies.

Café Viennois - the cream was delicious, not too sweet, but the espresso was barely warm, the cookie was meh

So, I haven't been in few months and decided to try them out for brunch with a friend. If you go online to make a reservation, it just says there's no seatings available, but what they really mean is that they do not take reservations for brunch. So just show up, as it likely will not be busy! Anyhoo, I've had many menu items that were excellent, but alas, I can't say that their Croque Madame was great... I was expecting a decadent sandwich with lots of cheese and ham, lashed with butter and topped with a fried egg. What I got was a dry toasted sandwich with an undetectable amount of butter, a single slice each of ham and cheese, with a fried egg on top. It was like having a dry diet sandwich, with a side of very good frites, and a side of salad greens with a simple dressing that could have used more acid and salt. They usually do a great job with their salad dressings, so I was a bit surprised at how muted it was. And the sandwich... well, the bread, ham and cheese slices were all good quality and tasty, but the amount was far too paltry for the two slices of unbuttered toast it came between. I understand that the cost of ingredients has skyrocketed, and restaurants cannot afford to make the same dishes at previous prices. I would have much preferred it if they just increased the price to reflect what it would cost for it to be made properly, or given me half a sandwich with the same amount of ham and cheese. Anyway, the good news is that what I was expecting to be a calorie bomb of a breakfast was thwarted, so I didn't feel gross and bloated afterwards, lol.

This bistro was cozy and had a dark, but warm atmosphere! We went for dinner and ordered two appetizers and the steak frites. I came here to try the escargots and the foie gras since I've never had it before and while the flavours were all new to me, I really enjoyed the experience of trying the food. In terms of quality, everything was very well made! I got my steak medium rare and the fries (which were made in beef tallow) were all consistently cut and crispy. The staff were friendly and all spoke French, which I think adds to the experience. Prior to going, I had researched French restaurants in Vancouver that does both escargots and foie gras and this was one of the few results that showed up, so if you're looking to try those items, I'd recommend this place.

We came here tonight for my birthday dinner. We wanted somewhere close by and not too boisterous. We thought we would try the re-branded location a try and we LOVED it. The restaurant is literally a block from our place. The patio (where we sat) in front of the Granville St Bridge chandelier is a great place to people watch but the size of the plaza it sits on provides a healthy distance between the patrons and the pedestrians. Everything we had was fantastic. I had escargots and moules frites in a white wine sauce and my husband ordered the cauliflower soup and flatiron steak cooked medium rare. The fries cooked in beef tallow were perfectly crispy. I dipped everything piece of mine in their house made mayonnaise. Both the mussels and steak melted in our mouths. The sauces of my escargots and mussels were light but had so much depth. I wished I had asked for more bread to soak them up. My husband loved his soup as well. He said the flavour was so rich he felt like he was eating cream (in a very good way). The serving staff members were extremely pleasant as well. We love our new neighbourhood restaurant.

Cute French restaurant at the bottom of Vancouver house. Replaced Ça Marche Crêperie but same vibe and layout. Not very big but cozy. No reservations and no takeout. It was Valentine's Day and we were able to snag a seat at the bar. It was fun watching the chefs cook and plate in front of us. We got the beef tartare and mussels to share. Beef tartare was fresh and not too heavy. The beet sauce was a great addition. The mussels were delicious and well seasoned. Came with hot crispy fries.

They forgot one of our orders for a while but I'm still giving 5/5! Friendly service and amazing French food. Everything was delectable including the wine they recommended as a pairing. Coming here is such a treat.

Cute little spot for French dining. Maxine, the owner, is friendly and was accommodating to my group's needs. I tried the Kits location several years ago, and remember the wonderful food I had there, so I decided to have one of my annual birthday brunches here. I started with a cognac old fashioned, which was excellent. For my main, I ordered the frisee au magret fume, which was well-made and the perfect amount of food. My friend and I shared the pistachio creme brulee. It was amazing! I would love to come back and try other menu items. I can really appreciate the service, the cute French Cafe experience, and authentic French food that this place has to offer.

A great addition to the neighborhood that nobody seems to know about. Formerly, the location of a creperie that is now a great place for steak frites! The staff are friendly and inviting. We enjoyed a dinner under the bridge but the interior of the restaurant is nice too. I had a creamy rich cauliflower soup to start followed by the hanger steak. Tender steak topped with a rich sauce that included anchovy and liver and so much more. However, the best bit were the fries cooked in beef tallow. So crisp. So rich. Also ask for some homemade mayo on the side - yum. Will be back to try more!

We came here for a Winnie the Pooh Afternoon Tea. Oh my goodness...it far exceeded my expectations!…read moreHats off to the kitchen staff for coming up with such a creative and whimsical afternoon tea. First thing that caught my eye was the cover of the afternoon tea menu. It was red with a picture of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin printed upon it in a shiny gold colour. When flipped over, it had the menu for the afternoon tea printed upon it. I was super impressed that they even had a separate menu printed for Vegetarians. (I opted for a Vegetarian menu). There was a cute little ceramic jar that was shaped like a Honey pot, and it had sugar cubes in it! Then there was this booklet that was pages long, and divided into Chapters. It was basically the menu again, but in the form of a small book. Each Chapter of the book described different foods from the afternoon tea. The last chapter listed all the different tea flavors one could choose. When we sat down and read this menu, I heard more than one person at the table say that they wanted to take this menu home. Guess what? For the price of $25, one could take this menu home as a memento of this extraordinary afternoon tea? Maybe I'm a bit of a sucker, but how often does one get to go to an afternoon tea as special as this? And I've always been a huge fan of Winnie the Pooh. So I coughed up the $25 and brought one of these menus home with us! Food was sooo good. I loved how warm the scone was when I cut it open. This was one of my favourite items. The sandwiches were amongst my favourites as well. As phenomenal as the experience was, I do think there are a few things which could have improved the experience. For one, a bit more service would have been appreciated. I had to wave my hand in the air to get our server's attention so that I could ask her to refill our tea pots with more hot water. Would have been nice if she'd just come around a bit more often and offered to top it up for us. Tea cozies on our tea pots might have been another improvement. A lot of my tea cooled down by the time I got to it. I like my tea hot but I didn't get in very many cups of hot tea as there was a lot of food to eat and by the time I was ready to pour myself some tea to wash down my food, the tea was...not so hot anymore. Oh, and while most of the food was appropriately sized, there was this one chocolate cookie sandwich that was really gigantic and suggested to be eaten last. We were so full already from all the other foods in the afternoon tea, and then to squeeze that giant cookie sandwich in...right at the end? A smaller and daintier cookie sandwich would have been preferred. It was overall a truly phenomenal experience. Yes, I do think it could have been slightly better, but I do emphasize the word "slightly". The points lost were so minor...I would still highly recommend this afternoon tea to anyone. It was well worth the money. It's offered every weekend for now but not sure how long they'll keep this around so if you're interested in a Winnie the Pooh themed afternoon tea, I'd make a reservation for it ASAP!

The setting is cosy and relaxed atmosphere. Staff was lovely and we were not rushed. Unfortunately they require full payment at the time of booking including a tip % automatically applied. I find this quite distasteful. It is one thing to pay a deposit to secure our spot ....but asking for the tip for a service yet to be provided is terrible. My friend really wanted to go and therefore I agreed to it this one time but I would never do it again.

We sat indoors with the option to be seated outdoors with heated lamps but we didn't want to smell the smoke from people smoking outside. We ordered the Dark Spell Latte, Albedo Spritz, and Final Word. The Dark Spell Latte is like an espresso martini with chocolate syrup added, which is pretty solid. The Albedo Spritz is a red wine cocktail with hard liquor, and stood out to me as they had 5oz of alcohol so this was fairly strong, but I would imagine most of the ounces came from the wine itself. I liked the gold dusted blackberry. The Final Word is fruity and smoky, which I enjoyed, but not warrant a hefty price tag compared to the other drinks. Service is decent and in line with other restaurant bars. Overall, solid drinks at okay prices that I can see myself recommending this spot. Given the name, it would be great to see more alchemy themed cocktails or decor as what draws me as a frequent bar goer is themed and unique drinks.
