It has character with cobblestoned streets and outdoor restaurant patios nearby. The bifanas are exceptional but pirri pirri sauce and mustard is required to give it that zing. Splash it on! The bun is fresh and delicious baked perfectly. If you come to Lisbon, do not leave without trying this establishment!

It's a tiny takeout-only counter, but the lines can get very long here. When I arrived, it was mid-afternoon, so only about five or so people. They're very quick with the food as well - I got mine, the classic one (no cheese), about a minute after ordering. The sandwich overall was pretty good. It's not meant to be a full meal - more like a snack or a breakfast type - it's not very large. The pork is alright, but a little tough. It's not very juicy, as there are certain parts that feel leather-ish. It did grow on me as I kept eating though, and towards the end I started to like it more. The bread is actually quite good; crispy on the top and yet the hollowed-out inside stays fluffy. They have mustard and chili oil on a side table for you to add - and this is much needed. The moisture from these helps so much with the sandwich, and especially the mustard just adds that different flavor that prevents it from being just plain pork. Oh yeah, and it's super cheap - at just 3 euros. Overall, it's not amazing food, but for how cheap it is it gets the job done. 8/10

I "ubered" out to Belem from my hotel. There was a small line up but it moved quickly. Cute and quaint place in blue and white. We walked across the street to a park to enjoy them. The pastry was so flaky that it flaked off very easily. The pigeons were aware of this and stood guard for any fallen morsels. The custard was so smooth and creamy and you could see the heat bubbles! I may have to go back for more!

A Lisbon Must-Do for Pastéis, Coffee & a Little Old-World Charm…read more First trip to Lisbon = Pastéis de Belém had to be on the itinerary! I had read up on the famous bakery before our visit and knew that arriving early was key. So we did -- and I'm very glad we did because this place gets busy FAST! There was a little confusion at first about which entrance to use and where to line up for a table, especially with people coming through different doors. Thankfully, we only waited about 5-10 minutes, which really wasn't bad at all. We weren't lucky enough to be seated in the beautiful old section of the café, but we did get to wander through it -- and wow! The historic rooms are incredibly charming, with gorgeous old-world details that make the whole experience feel like a little step back in time. We were seated instead in the much larger, newer dining hall. Our waiter was friendly, although definitely a little stern-ish, and after scanning the QR menu, we took a few minutes to decide what we wanted. Our waitress came by, took our order and quickly disappeared into the sea of tables. And honestly, I get it -- this place was HUSTLING! Of course, we ordered the famous Pastéis de Belém because... well, when in Lisbon! We also added a Torte de Chocolate because apparently one pastry each wasn't going to cut it, plus a couple of lattes. I actually loved that the menu included photos -- sometimes you just need to see the pastry before committing! Our order arrived surprisingly quickly, and the pastéis were delicious. The pastry was flaky, the custard was creamy and they absolutely hit the spot. I had expected them to arrive warm, though, and ours weren't, so I'm not sure how fresh from the oven they were. Still delicious nonetheless. The lattes were hot, tasty and served in pretty little glasses -- always a nice touch. One thing I did notice was that the tables, chairs and menus could have used a little more attention in the cleanliness department. That said, considering the sheer volume of people moving through this place every day, it's easy to understand how quickly things can get a little messy. Before leaving, we took another stroll through the historic portion of the bakery and café, which was definitely worth a look. There's so much character and history tucked into those rooms. And by the time we walked out? The line was already stretching outside! If sitting down isn't your thing, there's also a quick-order counter where you can grab your pastéis and keep exploring Lisbon. So, would I stop here again? Absolutely. Is it a leisurely, quiet café experience? Definitely not. It's busy, bustling and very much a Lisbon institution. But experiencing the history, seeing the beautiful old bakery, sipping a latte and eating one of these iconic Portuguese pastries is part of the fun. Put it on your Lisbon itinerary -- just go early, embrace the crowds, and save room for pastries!

We were disappointed at the time but we found many other restaurants that had good seafood as well. We were traveling with other family members this time and thought this restaurant would be the best places to try pretty much every seafood dishes available in Lisbon and some of the unique foods that we can't get at home. We had barnacles, glass shrimp (it is supposed to have eggs outside the shell but unfortunately we were told the season was over so there were no eggs), spider crab, oysters with caviar, scallops, razor clams, and cheese with bread. My daughter's boyfriend tasted the barnacles for the first time and he loved it. We ended up ordering it twice. Everything was delicious. Everyone enjoyed the food. Excellent service.

We also wanted an authentic Portuguese place and not anything touristy. Be careful what you wish for! We took a number but were almost bypassed as they were calling higher numbers. I got the "matre d's" attention and showed him my number. He spoke no English as could be expected - not an issue! So, he bumped us up to the front of the line. We climbed a long narrow and steep staircase to reach a long narrow hallway with about 20 staff running about and squeezing by each other. Somehow, we found the dining room and our waiter greeted us offering us a choice of tables. Clientele were very well dressed and spoke in Portuguese looking very comfortable. He immediately brought us a huge basket of garlic bread! It was quite a nice atmosphere and reminiscent of an older home with high ceilings. We had trouble ordering from the phone app (as it should be because it was in Portuguese only) so our waiter guided us. No IPA and no wine except moscatel. But this was a cerveseria with no IPA! So we tried two glasses of moscatel- not our favorite as it was much too sweet. We agreed to the garlic shrimp and lazy crab. I asked what it came with and he said nothing and pointed to the garlic bread. I asked about ordering veggies and he said there were none! The crab was fridge cold but would have been better warm. The shrimp could have been tasty if not so salty. It wouldn't have been such a culture shock but it was also very pricey for what is was. I don't regret this experience as I was immersed in Portuguese culture and food. But no veggies is unthinkable! lol
