No Big Beef & Cheddars or sad 7-11 refrigerator antiques for me. I want house made bread. I want fresh, seasonal veggies. And I want cheese that has something more to say than, "eh, I'm cheese." River Street Market, then, is almost literally the answer to prayer. The first time I had a sandwich here (try the "Pro no Pro"), it was so good I literally dreamed about it that night. And then I went back the next day and got another one. I've made three trips from Portland to Enterprise in the last couple of months, and while I've ostensibly used "work trip" as my cover, my true purpose has been to eat as many of these glorious sandwiches as possible. It all starts with the bread. Their focaccia is baked on sheets instead of in a pan, which keeps it flat enough to soak up approximately twice as much olive oil as other, sadder focaccias. (I don't even think it's focaccia--probably some esoteric Italian loaf I've never heard of. But it tastes a LOT like focaccia.) It's herby, salty, and scrumptiously oily without being soggy. What goes IN the maybe-not-focaccia is what really takes these sandos to the next level. Every single ingredient is top notch, from their aged balsamic (that drizzles oh-so-nicely over hyper ripe melon in their current seasonal sandwich) to the fresh mozzarella (cut into thick juicy rounds and perfectly placed throughout the sandwich). The proprietors are true artists, committed to their craft with an unwavering eye toward excellence in everything they do. Lord knows how Enterprise (a lovely place by any measure) got so lucky to have the best sandwich shop in Oregon park at its front door, but sheesh, how blessed they are. Words can't begin to describe the pure pleasure of eating at this fine establishment. If you're not already on your way to River Street Market, you should be.

They have a good selection of Idaho wines in the $20-$30 price range and lots of cheaper WA + CA bottles that are reasonably priced. Besides antiques and Idaho themed gifts they also had interesting jewelry and unique items, like fish themed blankets, local artwork and cool leather wallets. I wanted to not only redecorate my house with their antiques I also wanted to buy a mixed beer 6-pack for around $8.00.

I didn't feel pushed to buy anything, or rushed to see the store or checkout. I kept going around and around and gathering items and dropping them back off to the checkout counter. A very chill employee helped me roughly the first hour I was there, and then Beverly, the shop owner assisted me the remaining 1 hour I spent there. This store exceeded my expectations tenfold. I would turn a corner and there would be more exotic things. The refrigerated alcohol section had this delicious meade or ale. Viking something, perhaps... An eclectic variety of specialty items all around! A unique store with tools and gadgets imported from other countries. You name it, kitchen-wise, and it's likely there! I think I saw a Shakshukka seasoning blend and thought that was wild! That's my signature dish and I've seen the sauce in a jar but not the jar of spices! Just a lovely feel to the store. Positive vibes for sure! At the end of my experience, I told Bella I wish I could ave found an Oregon related patch, perhaps even Baker City, so that I could iron on to a denim jacket I was working on at home! And she said she had one somewhere but couldn't find it. And asked me to leave behind my contact info in case she ever did. Well, 6 months later she contacted me and I was overjoyed to hear from her. She said she'd found the patch and needed my address for it to be sent out. This lady's kindness was next level. I must say, it is one of my top if not FAVE patch on my jacket. The place had quality items that I, an ex kitchen manager - cook and sometimes chef loved. I felt home. The truffles were outstanding , the selection of kitchen utensils was excellent, the espresso makers and the high quality mixer was to drool for. The linens were nice, the selection of jams/ jellies, sauces etc were top notch. This is the best kitchen shop in 75 mile radius. What a plus for LaGrande. While driving I noticed the billboard mentioning Bella Mercantile, so I looked it up online and found the few reviews up convincing enough to give the place a peek. We were quite astounded by the selection in every area! A lot of the products are imported and of very high quality. Lots of nice ceramic items from Poland, Mexico, Tunisia, as well as cutlery from Japan and France. Some things are even made in the USA and Germany. There are things manufactured in China, but they looked sturdy, too. Lots of serious baking and cooking tools, locally made aprons (I think), even other home supplies like bedding sheets, towels, pillows, and rugs made in India. They also have a lot of finer gourmet foods from around the world in the middle section of the shop. We found everything we needed and more. Some of the products are higher priced and others are quite a bargain...so the store should have something suitable for just about anyone who prefers to shop in a more crafted space. The two women working there were super friendly, knowledgeable and quick to offer help. They seemed genuinely happy to there which always makes a big difference. It's nice to be able to count on them to have what we need. Their produce is exceptional, and their selection is extensive...which is great given it's a relatively small store. Catch 'em when there's a sale going on, and you'll almost always come in under budget. The staff there are very professional and friendly. Darlene and Twila are always engaging and wonderfully helpful, as are all of the checkers whose names unfortunately escape me...but in any case, it's a fantastic store with great employees there!
