This restaurant is a hidden gem on LBI. Yes- it is a bit pricey but you do get tons of food with your order. And yes it is "outdated" but that is part of its charm. Service excellent. wonderful meal with super attentive service. For appetizers, my husband and I had the roasted oysters. They were cooked to perfection, liquid gold with a light dusting of cheese and breaded topping. I was in the mood for something non-fish related after spending most days on our trip dining on fish. I chose the ginger glazed chicken and omg it was one of the best Asian inspired dishes I have ever eaten. I wanted to drink the ginger dipping sauce it came with! They include a lovely garden salad with your dinner and I was really happy they had an Asian vinaigrette to keep with my dinner theme. My husband had the crab stuffed flounder that came with a perfectly cooked baked potato and elegant cold slaw. He enjoyed the crabmeat stuffing that was elegantly encased in a perfectly sized flounder fillet. If the owner wasn't so miserable, this would be an excellent restaurant. The prime rib is second to none and is reasonably priced. I would have been happy to give this a better review but the owner, never smiles, never greets guests with a pleasantry. I can only assume he inherited this business. Had he built it from the ground up he would probably be more gracious. Every time I ask my server what's the problem with this guy and they say" it's just the way he is" well that's not a very good answer. Surprisingly the staff is excellent and they do not take the lead from the owner as they say the fish rots from the head down and it's only a matter of time before people stop going here. read more

The Engleside Inn and Restaurant is located in a picturesque area of Long Beach Island. A multi-story motel and a restaurant with two dining rooms occupy the site. We had reservations and, because we were dressed in casual clothing appropriate for a very chilly off-season evening, were seated in their sushi room. We didn't sample the sushi, but it appeared to be very small in portion size, while disproportionately high in price. The dining room was dimly-lit and appeared very dated; generally sparse in decor, and with dark gray-green walls. We had the misfortune of being seated next to a table of eight over-served "boomers" whose raucous screaming and shouting made them an outright nuisance. We didn't catch the name of our server, but the horribly understaffed dining room kept him in constant motion. He appeared frazzled and trying his best; our neighboring table probably didn't help his efforts. Yes, service was very slow, but our server wasn't at fault. Food did arrive at our table hot. With a single glass of wine each, two shared appetizers and no desserts, the pre-tip tab for our table of four averaged $52 per person. I mention this only to establish the fact that dinner expectations were justifiably dialed-up, in line with pricing. The seafood, largely fried, was fresh and the portions ample. We began with two shared appetizers, a fried popcorn shrimp platter with siracha mayo and the baked crab and cheese gratin. The shrimp had little seasoning not brought by the sauce, and were borderline overcooked. They were nothing to get excited about. On the other hand, the crab gratin was exceptional. A medium-sized ramekin filled with an abundance of sweet flake crabmeat and bound with molten gruyere cheese delivered on all expectations. Unami-rich and sweet from the crab, pleasantly rich and savory from the cheese and balanced in texture by a large quantity of small toasted crostini disks, this appetizer was clearly the highlight of the dinner. I followed with a cup of lobster bisque; a definite mixed bag. It was served with a small pitcher of sherry whose addition nicely accented the flavors of the bisque-- it needed it. A half teaspoon (or less) of finely shredded lobster meat was barely detectable. To the kitchen's credit, a judicious hand guided the addition of starch thickeners, but the lobster character of the bisque's stock was severely lacking. We each ordered the same entree, the crispy panko breaded sea scallops with an orange vinaigrette. Eight medium-sized (16-20 count) scallops arrived on each plate, with the rim of each plate dotted with the sauce. The scallops were well-fried, yet still succulent. I found that the dish became tedious before half were eaten (more so as they cooled), and it certainly would have benefited by a dish of additional sauce. My overall impressions were that the food was good, but could have been better with a more contemporary approach to menu, preparation and plating. We did enjoy ourselves and wouldn't balk at a return visit. read more

Great sushi. Not a big fish person or sushi person but the beach haven roll makes me drool directly on the table. 1000/10 recommend it. The blackened scallop appetizer is also to die for, with fresh lemon and clarified butter it's truly a dream. Last big recommendation is the pork chop, it melts in your mouth and has great seasoning. Holy Miso Sake Roasted Chilean Sea Bass! This fish couldn't have come from the sea. I swear it floated down from Heaven, swaying back and forth along its earthbound journey like that Forrest Gump opening credits feather, and landed itself perfectly on a pillow of jasmine rice and grilled asparagus, surrounded by a halo moat of miso sake and ginger vinaigrette. With a tinge of sweetness, a velvet touch, and an intoxicating decadence all around, this has got to be the best Chilean Sea Bass I've ever had. Hell, it may very well be the best fish dish I've ever had. The Engleside Inn is sure to please even the toughest seafood critics. It's beach town fine dining done exceptionally well. And no matter how high I can sing their Sea Bass' praises, this Long Beach Island landmark is thankfully no one-trick pony. Their Lobster Bisque (with fresh cream and sherry) boasts a wonderful texture, is bold in taste and voluminous without being too thick, almost as if it were meringued. The Blackened Sea Scallops (with drawn butter and lemon) are a devilish one-two punch of paper-thin, crispy exterior and melt-in-your-mouth mollusk. And their Claims Casino (half-dozen littlenecks broiled with green peppers, sweet onion, and bacon) are a clear favorite comfort food, perfect for passing around the table. All of this washed down with a couple of Pyrat Orange Mojitos (Pryat XO Reserve rum, Agave nectar, fresh mint, lime and orange juice with a splash of club soda), truly one of the most refreshing drinks I've drank all summer. Plus, let's not forget about the Sea Bass. In addition to the dimly lit, white-tableclothed main dining room, The Engleside Inn also houses a pretty spiffy sushi bar, as well as an outdoor pool-side patio for casual dining overlooking their beach-front property. And while I can't comment on their accommodations because, well, I've never stayed here, it's awfully tempting to book a room for the simple convenience of being as close as humanly possible to some of the hands-down best seafood I've ever had. I've stayed at this hotel serveral times over the years. Rooms are pretty clean, but I did find some pet food on the floor under the heater boards when I dropped a bottle cap on the floor. The ocean view is sweet of course. Great to catch a sunrise! Haven't ate in the restaurant, always ordered room service. It's always been pretty damn good. I just had the rack of lamb which was really really good. Very juicy, and full of flavor IMHO. On the downside, they should take the sushi off the menu because it left a lot to be desired. I've had better sushi from supermarket, and for the price I'm paying I expect there to BE some sushi in the friggin' roll. My friend had the pork chop and was very pleased. The veggies we both had were good. Overall the food has always been good, except for the sushi. The rooms have always been in good shape. My only complaint about the rooms is the towels are tiny. I've been to this restaurant more times than I can count and never had a bad meal. Food is very consistent ( and very good) over the years and sushi is excellent. I read a few reviews regarding service. People should understand the restaurant is in a seasonal location with seasonal staff. Every place on the island struggles from mid August on until staff returns in June when the teachers and students return. Be a little patient. You can't compare the island restaurants to ones in your home town where workers are a constant. The full time staff does a good job. read more

Main course was ok~definately not up to some of the reviews I have read for Summer 2022. Wife had salmon which was dry and I had filet mignon. The filet was of good size but not savory. Went to Engleside for dinner last night for Fathers Day for the first time I will start with the good our waitress Kayla was wonderful and very knowledgeable about the food and attentive . The food was good no complaints everyone enjoyed their meal. Now for the bad our friends had reservations for 8 but only 6 were going weren't supposed to be in LBI for Father's Day but because of the winds we couldn't take the boat home so 2 of our sons drove down so they could take us out to dinner . My friend invited us to join them she called to add 2 more, the hostess was extremely rude and said absolutely not we are at capacity . We went with them anyway hoping they would just add 2 more chairs to the table, same hostess was extremely rude and said I talked to you on the phone and told you no and they were booked solid for the night and they couldnt add us because it was a fire hazard ... my friend gave her 20 dollars and she miraculously said she would seat us but we wont be at the same table and her words or anywhere near them . The picture below shows how empty the restaurant was and stayed until we left , our friends are at the large table with no one around tWhen I said something to the hostess when leaving she said it wasn't her fault people didn't show up . Very odd that so many tables of people didn't show. What could have been such a. NIce experience was ruined by the hostess and on Fathers Day . I would never go back there again nor will I recommend to anyone. I will stick to places like Black Whale and Parker's where they are so much nicer and try to be accommodating and I have never had to pay a hostess to be friendly or to sit in an empty restaurant. Just spent 4 nights at Engleside with my mom and 2 kids. It was excellent! One of the only places on the island with a swimming pool. Rooms were huge and very very clean. Bed was super comfy. I was really pleasantly surprised! Hotel is located right on the beach so you can jump from beach to pool all in 1 minute:) They also have the Sand Bar restaurant right in between the pool and beach where you can sit outside to dine or order pool side. This hotel is great for families as it is within walking distance to fantasy island (little amusement park), the waterpark and Bay Village shopping and restaurants. We would walk to the Bay Village area in the evenings and watch the sunset. So cool! Staff was very friendly. Only recommendation I would give to families with kids is don't go off season because the little amusement park and waterpark are only opened on weekends before June 20th. We only stayed during the week so my kids missed out. I will definitely be coming back with the kids next summer! Love this place! read more

I had the Flounder Franchaise. Great fish but drowning in egg. My family had the blackened salmon which was delicious flavor but dry fish. 8 oz. filet minot was perfect with no complaints. The real struggle for this restaurant is the service, slow waiters on requests for water and ketchup and a 35+ minute wait for the food from the kitchen. To be fair, it was a busy Sunday night. We stayed there this past week-end--as we could still bring our dogs. It was exactly what we all needed--clean, nice rooms-not fancy but just right! A great location too. We will certaiinly return! We also ate in the restaurant and had not ony a fabulous meal, but fantastic service! A wonderful young woman who became our best frriend for the evening and contributed to the fun. Poor service. We were looking forward to our dinner at Engelside. It was our last night on the island. We had our reservation for 7:45pm. My husband ordered the prime rib. About 20 minutes after we placed our order, the waitress says...Oh I just found out we're out of prime rib. She said she didn't get the message like she was supposed to when they're out of something (strike #1).. But she said our other orders are in, so most likely won't come out together. He then ordered the strip steak medium instead. We were able to get all of our food together afterall (because I did ask about that since the delay was her fault), but his streak was more medium rare vs medium(strike# 2) and then she forgot to give us our salads (strike# 3). Had to pack them to go. We could have eaten them while waiting for the food. Then I asked the woman at the front desk/hostess area about the prime rib and if there's a list or something when a particular item is out. She said there's a list that the wait staff gets. She said sometimes guests order the prime rib ahead of time with their reservation..(what?...strike 4). She could tell I was unhappy. The waitress could tell we were unhappy. Didn't comp anything. But their answer was "yeah the prime rib always goes like that". So we'll know for next time. (We're not locals and we're not going back next time when we visit.) Well if she knew that then why didn't she check in the first place and tell my husband. Also we're not the kind of people that need to reserve a cut of meat to make ourselves feel good. That's ridiculous. Food was good but the service was poor. We could have spent our time, money and energy somewhere else rather than there. The space was also dark and stuffy. They are probably used to a certain clientele..either newcomers and/or locals /repeat customers for their business. Been coming here pretty much my whole life. Always had pleasant experiences (food, service, etc.). This past visit started off ok (they did give my sister the wrong sushi meal initially but corrected it...but the avocado in the sushi was brown!). But the negative experience began once we got our check. We ordered a bottle of wine which on the menu (at least the part we were looking at) was $49. The check had it listed at $89. We questioned this to our waitress (she was excellent!) and she brought the menu over and pointed to bottle that was $89 with an identical description to the one we initially intended to order (they were on different pages of the menu). She left and talked to the manager, who adjusted the price for us. But as the price adjustment was occurring, a member of our party went to the restroom and passed by the manager and the waitress as he was making the price adjustment. She heard him call our party "f-ing a-holes". Our party was highly offended and felt disrespected by this especially after spending almost $500. Upon leaving, I confronted the manager and he did not deny calling us the above expletive. He apologized and claimed that he was tired. This is totally unacceptable decorum from an employee, especially one in a leadership position. To add to it all, we were seated in a far back room with very dated decor...and the restaurant wasn't busy!!! There were multiple tables available in the more lively main dining room as well as near the bar. I hate to say this but we will NOT be coming back which is upsetting to us because it's been a tradition of ours for 3 decades. read more

I hate to write a bad review but I need too. We have owned a hone on the island for many years, and years ago , we always went to Engleside. Something happened recently or maybe it is the Covid, but we ate outside in a small tent area, and after that, everything went down hill. Our waitress was harried and aggravated from the start and we waited over one hour and a half for dinner which my dinner was blood rare. We had watery cokes for over a half hour before anyone came over. I asked for the manager and Chris came out. He was rude, sarcastic, abrupt and dismissive . Should never be a manager of anything and the waitress was so overworked doing everything . In the end though, she was yelling at me saying did I realized how hard her job is. Honestly after running a business like that they should all look for other employment. Everywhere else on the island, the restaurants did a great job handling our orders and serving with kindness our outside reservations. read more

Very rude waitress. She took our group's IDs to scan after ordering wine. She returned and said the 23 and 25 year olds IDs were fake. They were real. She was incredible rude about the situation and got into an argument with my elder father. Did not offer to re-scan and just assumed they were fake. She raised her voice. We called over the manager and he rescanned them and they came back all good. Two people from our party went to the bathroom and heard our waitress talking poorly about our table and explaining the situation to the kitchen staff. Extremely unprofessional and the service was atrocious. Will not be returning. Even with COVID, nothing like this should ever happen. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for the past 20 Years and it has always been a great experience. I think engleside is one of the best restaurants in Lbi. The food is always awesome, fresh and never disappoints. Whether it's sushi, or entrees from the main menu. This past week I went with 4 other friends. I ordered one of my all time favorite appetizers which was the tenderloin beef stir fry. So delicious and a fairly large portion. Then I had the blackened swordfish over angelhair in a light garlic sauce. Fish was fresh and delicious. I took half home with me.
