Salmon with chive crust, pretty good!
Ed T.

I was fairly disappointed in Eneko, when you compare it to the hype and pedigree that the head chef has come from back with its 3 Michelin stars. Maybe if I hadn't read up on him and his food I would've received the food a bit more warmly? But it's a real shame as I think there's a huge amount of potential here, just let down by execution and fine-tuning. First up, the service is generally great. I say generally, because the waiters are extremely friendly, knowledgeable, great at staying hidden in the background and topping your drinks up. BUT, my friend who's allergic to various food items, who rang the restaurant in advance to check it was ok, was then let down by our waitress who didn't seem to understand the concept of an allergy. Even when my friend had to leave the restaurant before our starters arrived due to feeling sick, our waitress showed no empathy or sign of being apologetic. On the other hand, the head waiter was extremely apologetic over it, and basically knocked off half of our bill as a way of saying sorry and rang my friend personally the day to apologise. Swings and roundabouts right? And of course, the food! Trying not to cover what plenty of the other reviewers have said, the thing to realise about Eneko is that its approach to tastebuds is different. Few of the meals are balanced. Instead, you just get an absolute intense amount of flavour of one thing. I.e., the Memories of Biscay dish with its seafood is just shellfish umami love. The pork pressa is just meaty love, and the mushroom dish is just insanely packed with mushrooms. Beware/enjoy! But unfortuantely, a few of these dishes fail at their execution. I.e, the beetroot dish is pretty terrible, the mushroom dish is too strong and needs something to cut it, and meat isn't actually that great compared to other places, the duck breast was chewy and lacking duck flavour, and the two times I had the hake it was great, but the 2nd was overcooked. So yes, execution needs to be fine tuned, and the menu needs some minor changes to help really put on show the food here! One great thing is that the menu did indeed change, with minor changes to dishes with the addition/taking away of elements, and overall, my 2nd meal was much better than my first. But would I pay full price for this place? No way.

I really enjoyed my lunch here (especially as I was here when they had the soft launch offer) The venue was pretty cool and the staff were friendly. Although not the most attentive, but I guess that's due to the fact that they are all still training, hence the soft launch. Loved most of the staters and mains, although if I go in the future I'd probably skip the beetrooot as it literally tasted like mashed beetrooot..I mean it was nice and pretty to look at, but it was nothing special.and not really worth the price tag. When it came to desserts, we were taken towards the kitchen so we could see what the desserts looked like. We ordered the rice pudding and rice pudding. The sponge was nice.a little different. (I can't say wow) but I'd skip the rice pudding. We didn't bother even finishing it between us as it really wasnt that great. Overall, a yummy place to eat. But it is pricey without the soft launch offer.

Eneko is a restaurant opened up by Eneko Atxa, a chef who has been working in a three Michelin starred restaurant in Bilbao, bringing his own creative dishes inspired from the basque cuisine One Aldwych hotel. A beautiful spacious contemporary restaurant and although situated in the basement it had an open ceiling that gives you the high ceiling look. We were very lucky to be seated in the middle of restaurant where on the left it was bright yet on right it was quite dark as if we were near the poles. Service was fantastic and all very friendly and knowledgable. Water was refilled regularly and complimentary breads were offered regularly too with a choice of rye bread, seeded sourdough or plain sourdough and unlimited refills too. Sadly they were getting quite stale and weren't as fluffy as I was expected for the sourdough. Better was the basil butter emulsion that came with it which was lovely and creamy although could have benefited with some salt to boost it's flavours. Boda Pork Pork Festival Beautifully presented in a wooden box with a carved pig's head as the lid containing three delicious pork delicacies. The mushroom Ibérico ham in milk bread was incredibly fluffy and puts a lot of Chinese buns to shame. The milk flavour was very apparent complementing well with the mushroom flavours whilst adding a nice creaminess against the rich cured Ibérico ham Suckling pig brioche came deep fried giving that boost of sweet and indulgence flavour against the juicy moist umami bursting pulled suckling pork. Greasy yet delicious. Finally the crispy pork jowl, meat from the side of the cheek give meant I was an superbly tender, juicy and fatty cut of meat. It was skilfully deep fried in a light crispy batter giving a lovely contrast in texture to wrap around it. Memories of the bay of biscay This dish wasn't just for show as fantastic as it was to stir the tastebuds by pouring hot water onto dried ice, next to seaweed which releases steam that smells like the ocean. The quality of each piece were also top notch, one of the freshest seafood I've had in a while and superbly composed. The oyster was wonderfully plump and sweet with a bit of what tasted like pea purée to round of its flavour by adding a delicate earthy taste to it. Wild prawn tartare was rich and an overload of umami. I have never had anything like that before. Although prawns were minced, it kept its bounciness with the herring roe giving it a burst of pungency and accentuating its silky textures. The crab meat was also fantastic with paste from the head giving it that pungent richness too. The meat was very fleshy, still with its juices intact which conveys freshness Potatoes in green sauce Although listed in the main dish I highly recommend it as a side too. The potatoes were tender soft in a lovely light creamy herby white wine sauce, delicately seasoned to make way for the highlight of it all, the fried crisp egg yolk. They were literally balls of egg yolk deep fried in batter so when you bite into it, the incredibly runny yolk will just burst out sending a gush of rich yolk across the dish. Sublime for just a potato dish Hake A fantastic take on fried fish using tempura batter instead, creating a extra thin and light crispy batter. The hake was incredibly succulent and almost meaty, lightly seasoned to allow room for the thick sticky savoury red pepper sauce. I did find the sauce slightly overpowering at times though so a little less salt might help. The parsley emulsion was a nice touch to add some creaminess to help bind the different textures together Ox Tail A dish that brings comfort food to a classier level. Ox tail braised in a complex rich savoury juice until it reduces. As the result the meat was very juicy and the cut meant it a good amount of fat to give it that rich umami flavour. The mushroom emulsion was great at adding complexity to it as well as break the meat apart with its creaminess. Some light wafers to add a light crunch and edible flowers to give the dish some vibrancy and colour. We did have a pleasant meal at Eneko but I felt it lacked the wow factor. Dishes were pleasing to the palate but needed to be more exciting and braver with ingredients and flavours especially at the high prices they are charging .They were all very safe choices with the deep fried dishes and the savoury sauces. Some little things need polishing like the bread, unseasoned butter and overseasoned sauce for the hake. However I can see that there is a lot of potential as everything was delicious and service was very attentive and friendly. Just need to up their game.

Memories of the Bay of Biscay

Had a great experience here! We were a big party 10 on a Wednesday night. They took our starters and mains orders a few days in advance. It was a bit tough because who knows what you'll want day of, but it did ensure smoothness of service. The memories of bay of biscay was a memorable dish. The presentation was really unique and flavors were excellent. I had the duck for my main, which was also really nice and flavorful. Portion sizes were good. I felt satisfied but not completely stuffed after our meal. The service was amazing. Very attentive staff. They could've explained each of our dishes a little bit more, which would have enhanced the experience.

We made a reservation on a rainy Saturday since it was near our hotel. Had eaten at the location many times when it was Axis. Many steps down to the restaurant. Found out later that an elevator through the hotel will get you there. Creative design with interesting sculpture like walls. We arrived at 6:15 and chose the pre-theatre menu. A bargain at 22€ for two courses. We had beetroot with a little barbecue sauce on the side. Nice presentation. Another starter was risotto with clams which was well done. Main course was hake tempura. A very light batter and very good. The other main, pork cheeks with mushroom emulsion, melted in you mouth. Wonderful sauce. You could choose one side as well and we had broccoli and creamy mashed potatoes. The dishes that each course was served in were especially attractive and quite unique. Made the food taste even better. We shared a dessert. 5£ additional. A Basque sponge cake with caramel ice cream. Wonderful flavor. Would highly recommend. Great location for theatresd. Wait staff pleasant and helpful.

Duck cooked on a jasper with broccoli side and tempura Hake. Delish!

A fabulous treasure in the theater district. Beautiful surroundings couple with interesting and affordable upscale food makes for a meal to remember.

Very nice setting and atmosphere. A lot of space between tables. Very friendly staff, if you want them to be. Most importantly the food is a delight, and excitement for the eyes and the palate. It is fresh creative accessible a lot of work put into it. Overall a food with personality, different from the rest and a very nice time spent.

Knock-your-socks-off sea appetizer with smells of the Bay of Biscay emanating from the steam to enhance the experience.

The talo is off the hook, but honestly, everything we ate and drank was wonderful. Service was also terrific. Will definitely go back.

Indeed all the staff were delightfully charming and courteous. Nevertheless, the ceiling is a bit of an eye-sore (test tubes full of different dull colours) but at least there's an acceptable reason behind their being there (they are to signify the restaurant's connection to their origins in Spain where they actually have a lab to concoct a whole variety of spices). As for the food and drink, it does have to be said that the 5-course taster menu is not that filling and the price for still water (£5) seems a little extortionate. However, the bread (available in white and brown with pumpkin seeds and served with olive oil) is certainly very pleasant and fresh, the scallops are well cooked and suitably complimented with vinaigrette flavour, the egg is masterfully poached and the pouring of more yolk on top is an original touch, whilst the monkfish confetti is wonderfully creative with confetti pieces made of edible souces. So although I can't shake the feeling that Ametsa does lack that extra special something, on the whole it does excel in its food and service and is well worth a visit.

I liked that the tables were nicely laid out so you didn't feel cramped while eating. My wife and I opted for the 105 GBP tasting menu, and we ate the following: Watermelon and tomato soup: this amuse was a nice and refreshing start to our meal Trio of appetizers: we were served, in fun plates, a salami-flavored roll, gyoza, and fishcake wrapped in phyllo. All were tasty. Scallops: they were nicely cooked, and I liked the house-made crackers. Fried lobster: this was so good (crispy and light), wish I had a bigger piece. Runny egg with ham consomme: tasted good, like breakfast Cod;nicely cooked Monkfish on the beach: the monkfish was nicely cooked. The "shells" were actually edible, but they tasted mostly of sugar. Pork belly: very soft and tender After a beet juice cleanser, we were on to the desserts: "Donut": apple puree was surrounded by a chocolate shell. This was a fun dessert to crack open and eat. Chocolate truffle: two pieces of deep, dark chocolate Final course of chocolate: there were some moons, stars, and more chocolate: while good, we were totally stuffed by this time (3 1/2 hours into our dinner). All in all, we really enjoyed the food and the service (though it took some time to get our bill). The meal was definitely not cheap, but if you are looking for a Michelin-starred restaurant in the Belgravia area, you should check out Ametsa.

Even the location is a bit out of the way, so if you're not already in the area, there's no reason to seek it out. The menu does boast a varied selection of meat, veggie, and fish-centered tapas, but not all of them are always available; even the drinks I was curious about were "out of stock," so I ended up having to go with their cheap wine, which made me wish I'd stuck with water. The food itself - while not bad - left something to be desired. Temperature and flavor-wise, it was all just "meh." The menu itself also lacks originality, so the fact that they were missing a portion of it just adds insult to injury. Perhaps it was because we were there on a Sunday evening looking for a quick dinner, but the service also felt forced and uninterested. And, for some odd reason, my friend and I felt hungrier when we left than when we went in. All-in-all, I found nothing here that made me want to come back.

The Donostia Social Club, hidden in the POP Brixton Container complex, is a lovely homely little venue that serves great tapas (although definitely not at the prices you'll get in Spain), that is pretty authentic - even down to the little squat bread sticks you get with everything in Spain. It's a very intimate restaurant, although there is limited outdoor seating if you're claustrophobic, but I love what they've done with the place. The white tile wall reminds me of restaurants I've visited in Spain, although the tiles are much bigger, so it's an interesting English take on this. The Patatas Bravas are particularly lovely and come with salt flakes, chilli and tomato sauce. The meat platter is nice, (It was okay for the UK, but nothing like the standard you'd get in Spain) but the bread is a little too thick cut, it really needs to be thinner, it's hard to take a bite, so I'd suggest if you order this you ask for them to thinly cut this. Absolutely yummy!

RESTAURANT - Cigala - Spanish - Bloomsbury…read more  Date of Visit: 15.11.17 Time: 3.30pm   Review:    I have never tried Spanish cuisine so I was looking forward to my visit to Cigala. The idea of having authentic Spanish food and tapas sounded perfect. I love food, so being able to try multiple dishes is like heaven to me. I arrived by cab and since Cigala is in Bloomsbury it was only a short trip from my Regent Street office. My friend joined me arriving via public transport. The restaurant is located near to Holborn and Russell Square tube stations so it is an easy place to get to. The entrance to Cigala can be found on the corner of Lamb's Conduit Street and Rugby Street. The area has a delightful village feel. Lamb's Conduit Street is partially pedestrianised with fascinating shops and cafes. Cigala is popular with the legal profession, media and many celebrities have made it their haunt. It is about conviviality and not really about fine dining. My review will reflect this in that I don't expect the same criteria.    The main dining area on street level has a large floor area and open kitchen and a lot of covers. There is also outside space with tables and chairs where huge pans of paella are served during the summer months. There are space heaters so no one gets cold.   Inside the lighting is not too bright or dim but just right and I noted an AC unit by the kitchen, so for those who may want to visit during the summer period you get the best of both worlds I would say.    Another feature I noted which you don't see much of are the number of coat hooks dotted around which makes life a little easier.  Cigala also has a private room downstairs which is at the moment being redecorated and should be completed by the time you read this in time for the festive season and those office Christmas parties.   But the main purpose of the review is the food, so take a look further down to see what we had and our thoughts. I visited with a friend who is a Pescatarian. As I don't eat much fish. I thought it would be a good idea to take someone along who does.    Location: 54 Lamb's Conduit St, London WC1N 3LW, UK   Parking: I arrived by cab and my friend via tube but noticed there was some parking outside. I understand that you can get parked relatively easily in the vicinity after 6pm.   Decor & Lighting: Stripped down because chef proprietor Jake Hodges believes the food should do the talking. Cigala offers basic comforts and pleasant lighting.   Ambience & Acoustics:  The location is quiet and there's no background music. As we attended during the setup time I cannot really comment on the noise levels during a normal lunch or dinner setting.    We had the following:    Food:    Croquetas de setas (Mushroom Croquettes) - We both felt the croquettes were a bit mushy though the batter is light. You do get three pieces however. I recently had cod croquettes in a private members club in Piccadilly so maybe I was a bit spoilt due to that.    Pinchito de pollo (Grilled marinated chicken kebab)- The chicken was moist and very well-seasoned and served with a fresh salad. The dish was cooked well and very well marinated. I would definitely have had two of these easily as you are served just one skewer.    Chorizo al la brasa (Homemade Chorizo with fried breadcrumb base) - Two small sausage shaped Chorizo had a strong meaty and spicy flavour but I was happy with this as the base of breadcrumbs really complemented the heavier meaty and spicy taste very well and I would recommend this along with the Chicken kebab.    Gambas al ajillo (Prawns in olive oil and garlic) - My friend had this dish which arrived in a lot of oil and the flavour of garlic was overpowering which did not appeal to her.   Sardinas a la plancha (Grilled Sardines with Garlic and Parsley) - Another dish my friend had and she mentioned it was nicely cooked and tender, but very salty.   Patatas bravas (Deep fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce) -  The potatoes themselves were cooked well with a crispy and crunchy outside and soft centre. With a nice tomato sauce, the only thing I would say is to include more sauce and less salt.  Dessert:   Tarta de Santiago (Almond Tarte with Ice Cream)-  The texture was a little confusing as it tasted like a dense and dry muffin. It was served with a custard rather than the advertised ice cream. It was not too rich but had a hard crust which made it slightly difficult to cut.    Arroz con leche (Rice Pudding) - My friend had this dish and her thoughts were that the rice was over cooked or perhaps due to the temperature of the dish (cold) it tasted very hard. However I understand this is how it is served in Spain.   Bill / Cost: In this case we were invited by the restaurant owners to come along and enjoy a meal on them and they covered the bill. Typically, however without alcohol we would have had to pay around £30 per head with soft drinks but they also have an express lu
