WRITING ABOUT THE DOG PARK ONLY
UPDATE - June 25, 2015: I really want to give this park more stars, but I'm just amazed at some of the problems that never seem to get resolved:
1) The swamp in the southeast corner. Well, they did fence it off. Granted, it looks terrible, but at least theoretically it should keep the dogs out. But guess what? It doesn't! They didn't secure the bottoms of the "fence", so dogs just go underneath. Then they're stuck in there, because they can't figure out how to get out. And of course, there are still pools of stagnant water.
2) Drainage: There are still some spots that never seem to drain. Why can't the contractor get this right?
3) The gates: The part isn't even a year old, and they're constantly broken. Gates are not part of a new technology. Again, the contractor should be able to get this right!
4) The small dog area: Yes, it's bigger, by about 500 square feet. Still, no one uses it because it's absurdly small. On top of that, there's nowhere to sit.
I don't want to sound like I don't appreciate the park, because I do. But I'm a taxpayer here. It's not like this park was given to us out of the blue. We paid for it. I expect better quality for what we paid.
UPDATE - Feb. 6 2015 - I still love the size of this park, but that's about it.
The absence of a functional small dog area is in fact a problem, and my 30 lb. Corgi has been attacked at least once. Yes, there is a small dog area there, but it's a complete joke, as many have mentioned.
The worst aspect is the drainage. It is absolutely abysmal. It's so wet and muddy there, you might as well take your dog into a swamp. The southeast corner has a low lying area that looks nice, but retains large mud puddles for days on end. Along the sidewalk are many large patches of mud/grass, where inadequate drainage never lets anything dry out. On the southwest side, there is a broken pipe behind a concrete bench that has contributed to a muddy bog, where dogs drink the muddy water, while other dogs pee into it.
And as it gets hotter during the day, the complete lack of shade anywhere will ensure that everyone gets nice and hot, including the dogs.
If you come here within 5 days of a light rain, you might as well plan to take your dog to the Do It Yourself Dog Wash in Solana Beach, because you'll need it. And bring LOTS of towels!!
Original review, 3 weeks ago:
================================
Overall, this is a GREAT dog park. First it's huge, so the dogs get lots of exercise. There are plenty of dog bag dispensers and trash receptacles, so no one has a reason not to clean up after their dogs. I love the grass, too. Many dog parks are a muddy mess after a little rain. The landscaping is terrific.
So why only 4 stars?
First, I have a 30 lb. corgi. He gets along with all dogs, but he doesn't like to be jumped on. This is a problem when he's around larger dogs, because he forgets he's a small, 11 year old dog, and no match for a 140 lb. great dane. So I had high hopes for the small dog area.
Unfortunately, it's a complete waste of space. It's about 15 feet wide and about 50 feet long, while the area for large dogs must be about 4 acres or so. They could have made the small dog are five times its current size without affecting the space available for large dogs. I guarantee this will cause problems down the road, because small dog owners will ignore the tiny park and put their dogs with the big ones. There are going to be some nasty incidents down the road.
My second complaint is about the complete lack of shaded seating. Today, it was cloudy, so we didn't notice it. But in summer, you better bring a portable chair with an umbrella, or you won't have a very nice time. The few concrete seats in the dog park are adjacent to trash cans where everyone deposits their poop bags, so they will smell pretty rich in the heat.
I'm surprised the architects of this park didn't learn from the Alga Norte Dog Park in Carlsbad. That park is quite a bit smaller, but had great shaded seating for owners, as well as a proper proportion of space for small vs. large dogs. Hopefully, the city will take these criticisms to heart and correct these two relatively minor defects.
One last thing -- the entrance to the dog park side of the park on the west side of the shopping center on Santa Fe Drive. This little street is an accident waiting to happen, with skateboarders, bicicylists, kids, parents, and drivers who don't look where they're going. I hate speed bumps with a passion, but they need to figure out some way to slow down traffic to 5 mph before someone gets hurt. read more
