My mom contracted with Empire to remove and replace her carpet in parts of her home. The price was high but she loved the carpet and wanted it done quickly. Her carpet was really dirty and stained, hadn't been cleaned in a long time. The salesman saw the carpet and said no problem, they could do it. She gave him a deposit the day he came to the house and signed a contract. The day of the installation the installers showed up and said they weren't going to do the job, her carpet was "nasty" and left. I called Empire to see what was going on and got the run around. I finally spoke to a floor supervisor (after an hour of being on the phone) who said they would only do the job if she removed the carpet. She is 71 years old and lives by herself in a condo community. I told them no thanks, she would prefer to get her money back and go with a more reliable and reputable company. I was assured she would receive a full refund within 7-10 days. It is now over 30 days later and no refund. Every time she calls they give her an excuse and say 7-10 days. Every time I call they hang up on me. It is really ridiculous. I do not normally leave reviews, especially bad reviews because things happen. Empire has done nothing to make this right even though their agent entered into a binding contract. Do not use this company. Prices are high and they are in no way reliable, honest or reputable. read more

I am still waiting on empire to start my hardwood job. Since I last wrote they have cancelled twice. I have had major renovations done in my house over the years with fantastic results, I have never repeat never have dealt with such incompetency or disregard for a customer. I rarely give such a scathing review, but I can't in good conscience not warn my fellow consumers of my experience and can't imagine I am the one and only. If I had read such a review as mine, i never have used them. On the phone with them now, they are talking in tougue--babble language. Empire look me up, I am a verified customer #1-142SVB7. My Parents had an estimator arrive last week, Peter Ferst, who was a contractor for Empire. He quoted them $1550 to do both my parents bathroom and kitchen floor, a 'special discount' he said. When the subcontractors arrived, they said that they were not equipped to do the bathroom and that they could not do it. After calling the company back, they asked what it would be just for the kitchen. After some 'back and forth' they said that it would be $200 on top of the original quote. They asked for the payment upfront which my parents refused to pay until the work was done. All things considered, the job was executed well; it's the sales and customer relations that is the problem with this company. They overpromised something that could not be done and then tried to pressure for more money up front. It is true that the sub-contractors do no speak English or very little. I'm 'ok' with this; we respect someone who does a good job- but not a bully nor someone who lies about what can be done. If it was up to me, not my folks, I would demand a $200 credit from this company for charging more than quoted and under-delivering on a promised service. Not to mention they are still scrambling for an emergency contractor to do their bathroom. Contacted Empire for warranty service on June 11th. Scheduled an installer to come by June 18th and no one showed up. Another installer left a voicemail June 25th saying he was an hour away from my house. As I had no notice of this, I was at work at that time and unable to leave. Another installer showed up unannounced on July 3rd with no notice but I happened to be home. He ripped up 3 planks before realizing he did not have the correct material. He assured me that the work could be completed the next week (July 5-9) and someone would call to schedule. I never received a call so I contacted customer service July 10th and they opened a ticket and left a voicemail for the installer manager in my area. I informed the last installer that I was closing on my home and needed this done ASAP. I called 6 times the week of July 10th with no contact made by the installation office until July 15th when Betty (an accountant with no business in customer service) left a voicemail that it was not covered under warranty and they were doing the work to "be nice". Between July 16th to July 30th, I called Betty 6 times with no answer. Finally made contact on July 30th where they informed me that I was SOL and they "tried everything" before hanging up on me. I was not being unreasonable or malicious throughout our conversation but Betty showed she was never meant for a customer service job. They claim the installation was done correctly, however, any contractor would tell you that new homes (mine was 2 years old) needs an adhesive over the nails in the subfloor to avoid nail pops. They did not do this. Not to mention they also attempted to cut tile inside my house which is not safe. I am now out a ton of money since my buyer's had to have the floors completely redone since Empire's manufacturer no longer makes that material (I had it installed less than a year ago!). Okay, the final result is I am a happy customer. The installers came early 8:30am Sat and stayed until 5pm to make sure I was satisfied with the work. They left me extra floor as a backup. A manager called a week before noticing my notes and the picture I shared. He stated this is not how we operate. Good! I am confident he will resolve the problem before it happens again. My suggestion to all customers...first call customer service, if still unhappy, call the rep who sold you the products for them to deal with. read more

Long but detailed review! In a nutshell for the skimmers, started crappy, ended up good. My initial interaction with Empire Today began with an online request for a free estimate. Soon after that they contacted me to set up an appointment for a salesman to come to my home. The day before my appointment they contacted me about a scheduling conflict so I rescheduled with them for a day later. The day of the appointment the salesman contacted me to let me know he had been overbooked for the day and wanted to meet sooner. I was able to accommodate his request and my interaction with him was pleasant. While his arrival in a Mercedes and stories of how he had lived on Chesapeake avenue (A strip of extremely nice waterfront homes for those that don't know Hampton) and various other personal detains led me to think if their salesman are so well off then the customers musts surly be fitting the bill for all of that, he was actually able to present a price to me that was in line with what I had anticipated. I had done my homework and priced out the material cost for the products I was interested in before hand. While I am sure they get far better pricing than the average consumer waking into Home Depot, I was looking to pay what the material alone would have cost to do the job myself for Empire Today to do the job for me. With that and the warranties I was comfortable going ahead with the job and even added a staircase to the scope of work. I had met the salesman on a Friday and the install was scheduled for the next day. He reminded me that next day installs were something they were known for. The day of the install I was called and told the installers would be arriving between 1 and 3. I called after 3 since nobody had shown up or contacted me and was told the installer was in traffic and would be there between 4:10 and 4:20. At 5:30 I had still seen no installer and was called by Empire Today informing me the installer was in traffic in Williamsburg coming from Richmond and they wanted to know if I still wanted them to try to come and do the job when he was able to make it to me that evening. Considering I had been waiting at home for him all day as opposed to working myself I let them know other arrangements would have to be made and that I was extremely dissatisfied. Following this I had posted a review here and between that and the notes supposedly made by the rep who called me that evening, I was contacted by a manger from the install department on the following Monday. This is where my experience began to turn back in the direction of the very reasonable expectations I had from the onset. She explained that she could not justify why my experience ended up being what it was but that not only was it not how they conduct their business or find to be acceptable but that she understood the impact that me having been taken away from my own work for this was. A deduction was made from my invoice that was adequate enough to calm my frustration from having missed a days work and as she had promised, the new installer contacted me prior to dispatching to my home so I didn't have to drop anything I was doing until I was certain of exactly when I needed to meet them. The gentlemen who did my installation were very personable which is always nice when you have to have strangers in your home. They consulted with me on several details throughout the install which I really appreciated and was much to my benefit in the end. The guys gave me an estimated time to get the job done when they had first arrived and was impressed that after having done a great job of the install and a thorough clean up were literally to the minute on time with when they projected to be done. In conclusion, I believe Empire Today is a company that ultimately wants to do right by their customers. The end result for me was a final product that I am very very happy with. While there were issues along the way, I can empathize with them in the sense that one person among many others in the company really not having their stuff together on a particular day can leave a horrible impression in that instance but that it doesn't necessarily reflect the company as a whole. Empire Today made right on a situation that I felt went very wrong. While it was not a painless process, they did everything they could to compensate for the prior incidents and ultimately delivered a product that left me happy with having gone through them. Everyone deserves a second chance because sometimes ish happens but a word to the wise, if ish happens to you, make sure they hear about it from you and make sure you share it hear. TOTAL REGRETS!!!! RICHMOND VA...Tomorrow (5/4/19) will make the "3rd" visit to complete carpet installation in 2 bedrooms, 1 hallway, and 1 set of stairs. On the 1st visit they ran out of carpet after completing the bedrooms and hallway. On the 2nd visit they came with the wrong color to complete the stairs. After pulling up my old carpet, they decided to use what they had to complete the stairs and return at a later date with the correct color. They ran out of that carpet leaving 5 of 13 steps with padding only and protruding nails. To prevent injury to myself and my small pet, I covered the steps with towels and a runner. They actually did it better than I thought they would. The old carpet was pulled out and carted off, the new put in and it looks great. Then they cleaned up and got on down the road. I contracted them to do a job for me on 7/26/20, paid them extra for it being a Sunday, for a special order and for helping to move furniture, only for them to not even show up, and say that due to COVID, the product we wanted was on back order. This was told to us after frantically trying to contact them.. We had been in contact at least 5 weeks before the work date up until 7/25/20, they could have told us all this before collecting the deposit. Also want to mention that when we pushed to get the refund, they gave us more of a runaround than a track meet. Gave us numbers to call that don't work, and terrible customer service overall. I would like to start that saying they are not supportive of family or veteran owned companies. My husband and I own rental properties and have installed carpets before with other companies. As an example it cost us about $4000 to do a two bedroom and a one bedroom apartment. We figured we would give Empire a try for our studio and one bedroom in the same building. They initially wanted to charge us $12,000! We were able to talk them down a little bit, but it took 5 hours with the so-called "professional" who came to measure. One thing she didn't think of was to point out that one of our doors was too low for them to install the type of flooring we wanted there. As a result, when the installers came, they just didn't do it. They did, however, leave materials behind and Mark everything as done. Here I am now 2 months later trying to get at just $250 back for something "erroneously" charged and I can't even get in touch with the guy handling my case. Do not use these scammers unless you want your time and money wasted. I almost forgot to mention. They rescheduled with us the day-of three separate times after confirming 3 separate times that they would be there. read more

Customer service department needs more training or revised processing. Called the day before my scheduled install, scheduled 30 days in advance, only to be told that I would receive a call the morning of install with an ETA. Not acceptable. I receive an automatic call at 7:45 stating that my installation was not the first for the day and I would receive a call later with the ETA. 20 minutes later the installer calls, they are waiting at the property. The property is vacant and I am 30 minutes away. My contract states the the property is vacant and I need thirty minutes notice. If I could give 0 stars I would. We have had three appointments cancelled due to "scheduling conflicts". For the first appointment, they called 5 minutes prior to the appointment. For the second, the call came 5 minutes after. For the third, we were supposed to be a "top priority" appointment and get a top salesperson, but instead, we got a call 97 minutes into the appointment time stating there were "scheduling conflicts". When we spoke with a representative the response was "Sorry, but it sounds like this isn't going to work out." Absolutely unacceptable. read more

Well my expectations were low for this. I usually try to buy local work if possible however we got an amazing deal on a better carpet and after the workers got started. They never even took a break. Ate lunch or drank anything. From 9 am to 6 pm this team of three destroyed this task like carpet terminators! I was highly impressed with how quick and accurate they made cuts and seams. They also listened to a special request I had to screw down noisy old squeaking steps and floors. Alejandro took extra time and care to do this and the result is having quite steps for the First time since living in this house. Can't even describe to you what it's like. I literally go up and down the steps for no reason now just to feel the power of silence beneath me. The installers were very accurate, even moved large heavy items for us and let me vacuums sub floors in between them moving from room to room. I honestly am so happy with the work done that I'll be contacting empire directly to put in a good word for the 3 man team that did 4 floors in an amazing amount of time. The salesman was pleasant and responsive. My floor quality met my expectation. However, the first installers damaged my ceiling and wall, then denied it. Even though I was told that anything that came up with the floors the company was capable of fixing, one of my upstairs floors was uneven and I had to get another company to come out before the floor could be laid. It took a long time for them to schedule to finish the floor. As it stands, the bedroom floor is lower than the rest of the upstairs and the transition into the bathroom prevents the door from closing. read more

I fell for the "buy one room get two free" scam and ended up paying over $2000 for a 12x12' piece of linoleum. Not any normal linoleum mind you, but "Space-Age Memory Composite" or some such mumbo jumbo. There were bubbles in the stuff since day one, and they remain there. There are chair indentations in their space-age product since the first week.The company never came back and installed transitions, which they claim is not their responsibility, even though their salesman said it was. The installers, although the most professional out of the bunch, hinted I got ripped on the kitchen floor covering. I called and complained and they told me to "cut" the bubbles out and replace the incisions in my linoleum with the extra pieces I was provided. I can just imagine how that's going to hold up. When I complained about the $2K piece of linoleum, they offered to come back and rip it out, and for another $1000, they'd put some tile in. They finally just closed my ticket out, because they were tired of dealing with me. read more

High pressure sales at its finest. I scheduled an appointment for laminate flooring and was impressed by the convenience and ease of scheduling. I also was impressed when my salesman arrived on time with samples in hand. However, I dislike not being able to get a written quote, but in order to have the price matched from a competitor I must provide their written quote. And I asked for an itemized quote my salesman said that wasn't possible as everything is lumped together. He couldn't even tell me how much the laminate was by Sq ft. Also, my salesman said he would get the quote discounted IF I purchased that day. If you truly are the best, which my salesman emphasized many times, you shouldn't force your potential client to sign that day to receive a discount. It should at least be a window of 24-48hrs. Because once I shop around I'll realize the you're the best and will close the deal with you. I'm thinking they have the appearance of being the best because of high pressure sales tactics. read more

Felt like I was buying a used car from a sheisty salesperson. An Empire Today salesperson came out, gave me a quote for my 13' X 13' family room, and quoted a $800 price for a carpet that was on "deep" discount (And this is with me removing the old carpet and padding). When I expressed my dissatisfaction with the price, she called her "manager" and "negotiated" a lower price, all while I was in the room with her. I could hear her manager clearly mocking me with a sarcastic tone. When she got off the phone she told me she had an "amazing deal for you!" $570. The salesman showed up on time with plenty of different samples for us to look at and even walk on to get an idea of how it felt. We had gotten a quote (and even signed a contract) with 50 Floor the day before. I did not tell our salesman this until he provided a quote. They were able to provide a superior product (heavier weight carpet), install about a week earlier, and about $200 less than 50 Floor. (Both companies use similar sales tactics.) Thankfully, Virginia law gives you the right to cancel an un-executed contract within 3 days of signing. We received a robo-call the morning of installation letting us know the installers would be there "this afternoon." I had expected the crew foreman to call when they were on the way. However, I got a call when they were there, and I was of course running an errand. The foreman was understanding when I told him I would be there in 15 minutes. They had the furniture moved, old carpet and padding removed, new installed, and furniture moved back within 3 hours. We'll definitely be giving them a call for our next flooring project. read more

The in home consultation was great. I was undecided about what type of flooring I was going to use and in which rooms including the stairs. Although the consult lasted longer than I had anticipated, I had the opportunity to look at samples and get various quotes based on options and materials used. The installation went pretty well they were fast and efficient and put everything back and cleaned up just like in the commercial. Because of sub floor damage I had to postpone one room because of needed repairs. There was a rescheduling mix-up, but customer service addressed my concerns and I received a credit. The carpet with extra thick padding feels luxurious and the hardwoods have really brightened upstairs. We had empire install carpet in our home two years ago in bedrooms and hallway. At the same time we had another company install carpet in our family room because we had a pool table and empire doesn't move pool tables. We ordered what we thought was a similar grade of carpet, at a similar price. The empire carpet now looks old, loose, and worn. The family room still looks like new. I called empire to see if they would at least come and stretch the loose carpet and their warranty doesn't cover that after the first year. Also, if you don't show proof of professional cleaning, your warranty is invalid. So, I give empire a generous one star. We don't wear shoes in our home so weekly vacuuming is all that is necessary. We voided our warranty unknowingly by not showing proof of professional cleaning. How convenient for empire. Buyer beware. read more

The salesman was great and answered all of our questions and followed through as necessary. It got even better though. The crew who came to our house were super nice and really hard working. I heard someone describe them as carpet terminators. . . absolutely! They obviously knew what they were doing and completed the work professionally. We installed both carpet throughout the upstairs and the stairs as well as tile for the bathrooms. Both jobs were completed professionally and they cleaned up after themselves. Even when my very detailed husband would point out something small, they were right on top of it making the adjustment. Very respectful crew, top notch in how they completed the two-day job. Would highly recommend them. Side note - All the items had to be moved from room to room for them to complete the job. They did all of that, no problem. However, when I went to put things back in their respective spots I "thought" I couldn't find some medical boots . . . Empire's customer service was awesome helping me track them down . . . however, it was MY mistake, not theirs. Mystery was solved. I will never buy from this company ever again. I was supposed to have my hardwood floors installed 3 weeks ago. The installers came and left the wood in a spare bedroom so the wood could acclimate. When they came back to install, I noticed that it was the wrong color wood. Empire tried to blame me, as they stated that this was the color I had chosen. I showed them the contract that had the correct color that I had selected, and this was clearly not the color that was delivered. I then waited one week for the sales rep to come back to my home to insure that we were ordering the correct color. One week later, and another day off from work, I waited for the early morning phone call to say my installers were on their way, only to get the call that they had ordered the wrong color wood....again!!!! So no drop off, or installation again after 3 weeks, and another wasted day off from work. The resolution for Empire was to offer me 100$ off of the job. I will never recommend Empire to anyone I know, and if I could have given them 0 stars, I would have. Don't let their cheaper prices fool you...you get what you pay for. Buyer beware. read more

We got two bathrooms done with new linoleum: the small one attached to the master bedroom, and the full-size bathroom in the hallway. In order, we had issues communicating with the workers. We had to call the home office a few times. And the workers tried to skip part of the work order, where they would remove the old linoleum floor. They originally were just going to tack the new linoleum on top of the old stuff. The first day (Tuesday) they mostly completed the small bathroom save for the trim board was not attached at one corner (see picture). The larger bathroom had minimal water damage to the underlying plywood. The workers said we had to fix this before they could continue. They do not do plywood on the floors, and they would not recommend another person or company to do the work. We found a handyman through Angie's List who said the plywood was acceptable. This handyman also installed the Luan which we bought through Empire (Wednesday). We tried calling and setting up another install appointment for the following day (Thursday). We apparently called the corporate office, and they said a Thursday appointment was okay. Then we called the local office to confirm and they said they had no room for appointments on Thursday. The next available day was Saturday. This left the larger bathroom unavailable for almost 5 days. When the workers came back on Saturday, the trim board in the small bathroom was pointed out. They had a poor quality fix (see picture). The larger bathroom was completed, but not without issues. They did not have a wide enough piece of linoleum to complete the long bathroom in one piece with the wood grains going in the direction we wanted, so they had to piece it together. The seam of the two pieces is very well done. However, it can be seen in the pictures that the wood planks are not even close to square with the walls. There are also bubbles in the linoleum (see picture). This was pointed out to the workers while they were still here, and they attempted to fix them. Unfortunately they did not fix all of them. And finally, there was some prior water damage on a corner next to the shower. The tile in this area was still attached to the wall. After the work was completed, it was noted that the tile was no longer there, and it was instead tucked in the shower. The issue was that the workers did not even mention that the tiles had fallen off to us. All in all, we will not be returning customers. Update: found out that the toilet in the large bathroom now leaks after they reinstalled it. It's suspected that the wax seal was never replaced. Tldr; make sure they do the work on the work order, they did a good job in the small bathroom except for the trim, and there were several quality issue with the larger bathroom read more

This has been a nightmare of an experience. I wish I had read the reviews before paying Empire to do my carpet. The salesman is completely unorganized, forged my signature on a contract that had the wrong price on it, and has made this fiasco a complete disaster. I am so disappointed with all of this. I am a single woman in the military trying to rent my home out before I transfer, and the carpet that Empire installed in my rental home looks absolutely terrible. I should have just done it myself!! I will be asking for a refund and will be taking full legal action if the company does not cooperate. Who runs a business like this?!?! The salespeople, dispatchers, and installers have zero communication with each other. The carpet isn't even finished yet because the installers did not bring enough with them to finish my stairs. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. DIY or go to Home Depot. AWFUL. I purchased a hardwood floor from Empire. To start, the salesman was very professional. He showed the samples, measured the area, and provided a very competitive quote on the spot. The installers arrived on schedule and did a superb job. When they removed the old carpet they discovered a bad spot on the subfloor. They repaired it at no additional cost and completed the entire job on schedule. I can't say enough about the installers. They worked non-stop and we're extremely careful to maximize the appearance of the completed project. read more

DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! We wanted laminate flooring for our home and at first was quoted $10,000 When we said no, he dropped the price to $6,500 When we still said no, he asked what we would be comfortable with. I said $4,000 He said no, got mad and left. Now I see that they have a so-called 75% off deal going on right now. 02/20/19 so I emailed them and told them about my written estimate. I was told that, that was then,this is now. 75% off of their original price would be $2,500 This is false advertisement. I've contacted the BBB and put this review on every site I can find. Just glad I got a written estimate. read more
