All four of us did the buffet. There is a good variety of options there, from starters, entres, and…read moredesserts (actually, tons of desserts). However, the labeling is atrocious and it's often hard to tell what each item is (like, the churros were labeled as tacos). I think they are just always shifting things around, so they must have trouble keeping up with things. I wish they had a bit more variety of vegetables for the buffet that aren't part of a final dish (like in an enchilada). It's mostly just meats there. A few of the things seem a bit suspect, too. The smaller make-your-own tacos have sad looking ground beef and "queso." But I guess that's to be expected at the "American style" taco part of the buffet. I see that some reviews have mentioned there being grilled veggies, but that was not around on the day we were there. I'm not sure if that's a part of the menu you can order from, or if there's just that much variety in what they offer day-to-day. What's not to be missed, though, and it very good, are the fresh tortillas and made-to-order street tacos. Very yummy. I could just eat the tortillas all day. Best of all, everyone there is very friendly, welcoming, and accommodating. If the labeling were a bit better and some more vegetables (beyond salad), I think it would be 5 stars. As is, I'd give it 4.5.

(Just to remark on cleanliness) I also noticed the cook on the second night, when we came in, he had the grill out from the wall scrubbing down the wall behind it. Complimentary chips and salsa were unremarkable but fresh. The same can be said of the entrees we ordered. The green chili sauce was good. What was under it was extremely salty, so much so that we had to push it aside. We had eaten here on previous travels through Alamosa and the servings were well seasoned. Not so this time. Even the guacamole was overly salty. This would be a better review if the salt had been taken down a couple botches.

The portion was generous and we took leftovers home for supper! The flavors blended well and had that comforting home cooked flavor. We both loved the green chili and found the beans above average, reminding us of the homemade, all day + simmered, beans off of a wood-fired stove in the alps when we lived in europe. Yes, they were good. The atmosphere was hole in the wall cafe, where all the best food is found. I did enjoy the mural on the wall, the on going local conversation, and the familiarity between staff and customers. In the midst of that, we felt welcome. I forgot to get pictures of the menu. Prices were quite a bit higher than shown previously. However the portions and value were good and we didn't know until leaving that the price included the tip. FOOD There was complimentary chips and salsa. It was okay. I started craving a stuffed sopapilla ($17.99) as soon as I saw it on the menu. The pork was so tender and the green sauce I requested was full of flavor. Highly recommend this meal. My daughter asked for the quesadillas ($12.49) from the appetizers. It was strange that in the middle of the triangular goodies with requested ground beef was a huge pool of red sauce. She enjoyed the side of guacomole ($1.99). My SO had the steak Mexicana ($17.99) which he seemed to enjoy. My other daughter had the shrimp Mexicana ($17.99). She gobbled the shrimp. I tried her beans and rice which I didn't have with my own meal. They were pretty good. SERVICE I really enjoyed meeting the owner. He came to our table and helped clean up some water my daughter accidentally spilled. The only thing I wish that had happened that evening was that all of our meals would have been served all at once. They were spread out minutes apart. Our server was too frazzled to serve everyone in the restaurant efficiently. There were two 5-top tables, and three booths with 2 to 3 people each. It took about 10 min after we were seated before the server came to take our order. I asked for water with lemon, but she forgot the lemon. She brought lemons 10 min later when she brought the food to the 5-top next to us. Our food took another 15 min after we ordered. After food was served to everyone in the restaurant, our server came by to check on us...we were 3/4 done with our meal. FOOD. We were provided chips and salsa (enough for 1-1/2 people only) after we were seated. Since food was slow coming, we asked for more and was told it would cost us $1.99 for another round. Huh?! We agreed to the charge because we were starving! I loved the chips though because it was not store-bought. For our meal, I had a combination meal of chicken enchilada, cheese enchilada and crispy relleno with green chile. Taste wise, the food lacked the UMPH to make the food taste really good although the crispy relleno was REALLY CRISPY! My husband had a beef burrito meal. Like mine, he said it was nothing to write home about. Not sure why this restaurant was given the title of best Mexican restaurant in the SLV. No way! We are not returning.

Can you smell the spices Fernandez? I remember long ago…read moreanother smoky plate like this Full of enchiladas Fernandez Ok, enough of that. I'm no ABBA fan and many won't even remember that song anyway. The point is, this is where I get some of my spices and blends for some of the Mexican cooking I do. And what little Mexican cooking I do has become legendary. Maybe not legendary but popular. Like I made enchiladas years ago and it has become our traditional Christmas dinner. The spices I get from Fernandez mix with flour, throw in a skillet with some oil, awaken the ground chile, keep the heat on and add water in small amounts as the roux grows and expands and before long you have a skillet full of smoky, spicy, delicious enchilada sauce. The filling is up to you. I usually poach chicken breasts in a white wine and chicken stock, shred it and then stew it with lots of onions, garlic, red, yellow, green and jalapeno peppers. Then I turn off the heat and throw in a bunch of baby spinach to wilt. And a bit of cilantro, but not too much. This is the filling for the enchiladas, along with cheese. Load a bunch of pans with those bad boys, smother in enchilada sauce and cheese, 20 minutes at 350 and lookout, the neighbors will be coming over to see what they are smelling!
