The Bethnal Green Road surprisingly has several beauty shops - but Emma for beauty has the nicest of service and most affordable prices . The owner has not had the salon for long and she often is in the salons herself giving treatments. I first noticed the salon when it arrived because of its strange 3-D pebble flooring ( spa detailing I suppose!) and its huge snowball chandelier in the reception -very strange on Bethnal Green Road!! However I never thought to venture in. It was only recently that I was in need of a little TLC and this place was recommended. I fast found that many of my friends were choosing here and were in fact regular customers. They offer full nail bar which is more pricey -and have a nice selection of colours also to buy -However selling only very high end and very, very expensive varnishs . If its a waxing or tinting treatments you are looking for ,though this place is very affordable. Considering this is "looking good" pampering rather than "health" pampering - leg waxings cost as little as £14.00 and eyebrow tintings £6.00 -I got so carried away that I actually even did my eyelashes which frankly was a bit pointless since you need some decent lashes to begin with -- They offer full body massages and scrubs which is justifiably "health pampering " however at prices of in the region of £95.00 - my wallet at present does not include "wealth pampering " - for now at least ...... read more

I had a French manicure here once, all the private rooms were booked so I sat on a minuscule stool in the lobby while the manicurist regaled at great length the details of her impending wedding, littered with dancing uncles, errant page boys and spiteful mother in laws. First off all, the map to the right side of the yelp page is a little misleading at the location of Emma For Beauty, it is actually further east on Bethnal Green Road, just north of Weaver's Fields. Okay, now to my humble opinion. This is such a rarity in the Eastend. It is a West-end spa experience for bikini waxing at a Eastend discount. I have had my waxing "wild" days. Moving from city to city, waxing salon to waxing salon. Cheating on some good waxers, finding good deals, but always having a little bit of an issue with either the price or the quality. Emma for beauty is top 3 IN THE WORLD. I originally started going here because it is one of the few spots in London that does hard-waxing, which is often the signal for quality and also a great way to prevent issues with delicate skin. A full Brazilian (which is also called a Hollywood) with hard wax takes about 30 minutes and is around £35. The staff is professional and fun, what more could you ask from someone that has been that intimate with your vjay. The decor is very calming and everything from the treatment rooms to the bathroom is spotless. After a few sessions the great waxer, Jo suggested that I just do strip waxing. Remembering the last time I went the cheaper faster, but much more painful and ingrown-hairier route, I hesitantly agreed. I'm an expat in London and have been looking for a waxing place like my one at hoem for about 7 months. I've finally found the place I will be going to for the rest of my time in London! The prices were great, the people are so nice and the place is clean. The location isn't the best but nothing is perfect. I went to Hayley and she was so nice. We talked the entire time and she made me feel very comfortable. She also did it all in 15 minutes which was amazing. My only complaint is that they don't wear gloves. I've been to a lot of places and some do and some don't. I hope eventually all do though because it is a little gross if you ask me. read more

With very affordable prices this salon beats all the rivals in the central. Ive just come from here and had my nails done and had to write. The place is very casual with a friendly vibe. I get the feeling they have lots of regulars and everyone gets the same warm welcome. The work was great, perfect nails, would have loved a bigger colour choice, but I dont think that would be up to therm. The beauty therapist who did my nails was just the right side of chatty, without being pushy. Its very affordable. Oh, and they have air con. Just got back from my first Brazilian at Emma for Beauty. Overall I'm very pleased. I got there about 15 minutes early and was a little surprised that the guy on reception didn't go back to check if the woman I was booked in to see could take me early (the place was DEAD). He just sat down and started reading the paper. Oh well, fair enough...just would have been nice if he could have at least checked. I was also kind of hoping for a cuppa as it was a cold and rainy walk from my house, and I was so early, but no dice. Not docking points for that though, just would have been a nice bonus and isn't unheard of. I had Joanie (Jodi?) and she was really professional, communicated well about exactly what I wanted, and explained things when I asked. She knew what she was doing, and the results are great. I would note, however, that they offer both cold strip wax and hot wax. The hot wax is more expensive (but apparently keeps you hair-free for a little longer and is a bit less painful than strip wax, which is why they recommended it to me for my first time, and which after today I cannot imagine is true...yeoww!). So even though their website says 18 pound for a Brazilian, that's for strip wax. Hot wax costs quite a bit more at 25 pounds, and I imagine the listed price for all other body areas is similarly increased if you chose hot wax over strip wax. Not exactly the uber-bargain I had hoped for, and I wish the website explained the hot wax/strip wax thing, but it still seems like a fair price. The place is clean and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable (at least the woman I had), and I live pretty close by. Will most likely be going back since it's close, but might try 171 Hair & Beauty in Islington (a warm wax Brazilian there costs just 17 pounds rather than 25, though they apparently do use strips of cloth with it, unlike today). I can do some shopping on Upper Street when I'm there, too, which is something you can't really do in the same way on Bethnal Green Road. UPDATE: So on closer inspection, she wasn't as thorough as I had first thought. Plus she did it...er....off center. Still OK, and as I don't have much of a reference point with this as it was my first time, I'll probably try another place in order to compare. UPDATE #2: Hrm. I went here for a brazilian wax last spring based on these reviews and was very disappointed. The things I liked about it were the price, the atmosphere of the salon, and the fact that it was really fast. I chose the hot wax because, by experience, it is much better than strip wax. However, I have never had an experience as awful as this. She coated about 3 big chunks of wax on really thick, pointed a floor fan at me to dry, ripped them off and sent me away. The whole experience was about 10 minutes total. Needless to say, she did not take the time to do smaller sections in the direction of the hair growth, so my hair was growing back in less than a week. Also, the location was really sketchy. I wouldn't have minded this since it was such a good price, but it was the worst brazilian I have ever had. I took my business elsewhere 3 weeks later. read more

Every time I have been to Emma for Beauty for a wax I have had a different therapist. Normally this annoys me but everyone at Emma are so professional and good at what they do. I have never had a bad experience with them. It is as painless as is possible with a bikini wax; the staff are always welcoming and friendly; and they listen to what you want instead of just doing what they think you want. Unfortunately I no longer live in London so cannot go back to Emma for Beauty. I urge you to go while you can. I haven't found anywhere as good since!!!!! read more

After reading the good reviews I was very much looking forward to going to this beauty salon, however, I was very disappointed. The person who gave me the treatment was extremely impolite from the very first second on. When I entered the shop, she did not even say hello or introduce herself. Instead she complained that I was five minutes late for my appointment. I am a reasonable person and if I am late, I accept that the time is being deducted from my booked time. However, there is no reason for being impolite and unfriendly. The facial itself was mediocre at best. The person rushed through the whole treatment and entered and exited the room a couple of times, everytime kicking me feet or hitting my arm. She did not even bother to apologize. The person wasn't even gentle when doing the different treatments. First, she did not take off the make up, then she rubbed some cream in my eye which is highly uncomfortable given that I am wearing contact lenses. The best thing though was that she skipped the exfoliation which is part of any facial and ended the session five minutes too early. Without any explanation. When I was asking her, why she ended too early, she said that everything was perfectly fine. In the end I had a 40 minutes facial but I was paying for 60 minutes. Overall, the experience was extremely disappointing. This was my first and last time at Emma. I rather spend 10 pounds more somewhere else and in return get a greeting when I enter the salon and being treated in a polite and friendly manner. read more

This morning I went in to get my nails done with the OPI gel polish. I was looked after by a lovely girl who was friendly and chatty but not over the top. She was very neat and went back to fix mistakes, continuously checking to make sure my nails looked perfect! Will definitely be coming back :) read more

I got to Emma for beauty because of the advice given here. The shop is clean and well decorated. They welcome well. But what I didn't like was the work done. I went there for full legs and eyebrow. The eyebrow were well done, almost perfect. However, the full legs...hum... First of all I don't know where are their legs limits. At the end I thought that it was a 3/4 legs. Then the hair were not well removed and she didn't even checked. Once she was finished, she was already outside waiting for me to pay. I was half-naked, so going outside to complaint wasn't really possible. Secondly, when she finished the waxing, she didn't care about the wax traces remained on my skin, even for the eyebrow. I had to take the mirror and remove it myself (she was already at the till, waiting for me to pay). Finally, when she finished the waxing, she poured a cream on my skin, which I found really lovely. But, she just poured it. And I asked, "should I leave the cream like this or is it to rub?". She answered "oh, I just put it like that, you can rub it"... I've never seen it in my life! On Bethnal green road, there are many beauty shops, and with more attractive prices. I will try one of them next time, but something is sure, I won't go to Emma anymore, never ever. read more

i had to write a review for this place! i'm american, and have lived in london about a year. i've had a hard time finding a place for waxing (eyebrows, bikini) that isn't really expensive. british friends or friends-of-friends didn't have any good recommendations, either (except benefit, which charges £15 for an eyebrow shaping!). i found emma's on yelp! and i had a fantastic experience. i had an extended bikini and eyebrow wax for £15 total!! they seem to book up quickly and are consistently busy, so i would call a few days in advance for an appointment. i did sit there for 30+ minutes waiting since someone before me had arrived late, it caused all the following appointments to be late, but they were very friendly and apologetic. i was very satisfied with how clean it was. the staff was attentive and the results were great. i will definitely be going back regularly. UPDATE: you can't beat a £9 extended bikini wax, but ask for joanie. i had someone else today, and the process was less professional and sloppy. i was left with wax in... er... the wrong places. and, at the least, i would appreciate "symmetrical" results. i just wasn't feeling the same level of care and attention to details... read more

I am so disappointed with the place and my experience. I went last year and had one of the best waxing and pedicure by Emma. I have been waxing for 20 years and I can say that I had the worst one last week at Emma's. I was in a tiny dark room with a wobbly treatment table. I am not that fussy but on top of that the beautician was rude, the waxing hurt like hell, I went home with still some pieces of wax left on my legs and some hair. Awful. And I have never been handled like a piece of dead flesh like that. Yes it is cheaper than other places, but you get what you pay for. Never again. read more

I'm with mixed feelings. I had a special event coming, so I decided to do something. They persuaded me to make an appointment for a rehearsal hairdo and make up, 2 weeks before the event. So I agreed. Everything was great, I couldn't recognise myself. I was so pretty! 2 weeks after that, I went for my appointment. The make up lady was late with 1 hour. But that wasn't the problem! She didn't even apologise! She started yelling that I have to wait if I want to be served. Anyway, we finally started and when I looked in the mirror expecting the vision from the rehearsal, I saw something that was really awful! I told her that wasn't what we agreed on and she replied she couldn't remember what we did 2 weeks ago. I didn't know how to react.
