This was a very nice dining experience. The decor is lovely and the wait staff were very nice. The food was just as described in the menu. I enjoyed the Peruvian rice which was not just your regular rice, but had some unique spice and tartness to it that made it the perfect compliment for a roasted chicken. The fried Yucca was the best I've ever tasted. Crunchy on the outside yet softly chewy on the inside, not tough like some others I have had. They have an interesting selection of white wines that were a little more unique than the typical Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio. I was delighted to taste two different Spanish wines that were quite piquant and fresh. The only reason I didn't give them 5 stars is because the space is a little loud. There is only hard scape on walls, ceiling, and floors, which makes the room quite echoey. I felt like I was straining to talk to my friend across a two-top table. The other reason it did not get 5 stars is because our waiter was not knowledgeable about the wines, and did not bring some of the basics to the table right away. We had to ask him twice for silverware. I think with some training and more experienced these issues will evaporate. All in all I would go back in a heartbeat. Pretty good experience! The margherita pizza tasted like a typical margherita pizza. Unfortunately, Cugino Forno ruined pizza for me ha. The embur salad, caprese sandwich and fries were fresh and delicious! Service was okay, but I know it probably improve over time. read more

Amazing food! I tried the salmon and it was the best I have ever had. I ordered the house rice to go with it and it had a lot of flavor as well. We sat on the patio and the wait service was stellar even though we were the only ones out here for half of the meal and the interior seating was packed. My partner and I have been once, and we really enjoyed our meal and experience. I got the avocado salad, which was very fresh, crisp and perfectly dressed. Boyfriend got the half chicken with fries, which he loved. We split the fried yuca appetizer with yellow sauce--definitely get the sauce with the yuca! Also very good. First time at Embur. The atmosphere was light and friendly. Patrons were engaged and having a great time. It's not a stuffy restaurant even though the food is excellent in quality and flavor. I had the fish special- barramundi pouched in a light white wine sauce with veggies and salmon tips- outstanding. Hubby had the house stir fry which was also fantastic and flavorful. We haven't been out to eat much for obvious reasons but we ventured out to sit on the patio here. We sat immediately and ordered our entire meal within 5 minutes of being there because we had our two young children with us. We ordered empanadas, the fried rice and a pizza. Empanadas came out fairly quickly and were great! There was only one other table seated when we sat outside but did fill up with a couple other parties. As we sat and watched for about 45 minutes people come and go who had arrived after us we started to wonder if they lost our ticket. It was never acknowledged how long we had been waiting for our food. After an hour and 22 minutes we finally received our meal, just rice and a pizza, in to go boxes because our kids were starving and we were ready to go. The servers only explanation is they were super busy but people who came in after us received their food quickly and had finished eating and we still hadn't received our meal. When we got home the pizza order was not correct to top it off. We were not looking for a free meal or a discount, which was not offered, but acknowledgement that something clearly happened and they had messed up. Unfortunately, this will be our first and last time eating here. read more

We decided to try Embur on someone's recommendation. I am so glad we did. My husband and I both ordered the skirt steak with a side salad and grilled potato. This chic new spot with very little foot traffic deserves more attention. The service was very attentive, knowledge and friendly but not overbearing. The menu has offerings that you won't find in most other areas of the city. The beer selection and cocktail menu would make you think you're at an upscale lounge downtown (try the Paloma). The food was executed perfectly with great flavors, perfectly cooked meet and nothing that left you overly full or bogged down. We got the fried yuca and empanada as appetizers. For entrees we got the veal t-bone, 1/2 chicken, Embur sandwich, and arroz con carne and everyone loved their meals. This was our group's second trip to Embur -- we enjoy the ambience and the food. Customer service is superlative. We opted for the 1/4 chicken with French fries, rice and salad. The chicken had a good tangy flavor but was a bit on the dry side (unlike the first visit). The salad was only so-so, nothing to distinguish it and the fries likewise were bland and unremarkable. We ordered the avocado salad -- appealing but admittedly had just a wee bit of avocados and was rather pricey considering it was mostly just greens. We all liked the fried yucca dish and the accompanying sauce. Also had the plaintains -- the only thing that really didn't deliver -- no flavor and very much undercooked. Admittedly I've been spoiled by a close friend from Puerto Rico who regularly treated me to beautifully flavored and carmelized plaintains... The first trip was better food-wise, not sure what accounted for the quality slippage. Still, this place has great energy and a staff which really tries to please and the criticisms here are gentle and hopefully constructive ones. By the way parking is ample and bathrooms are clean and well attended. read more

My Peruvian girlfriend and I dined at Embur on Saturday. I include that detail just to let others know this not my first encounter with Peruvian cuisine. I have had faux Peruvian at Viva Chicken and more authentic fare at a few hole in the wall places as well. The food was excellent. The arroz chaulfa and ceviche were first rate traditional dishes. The food is good, especially the salads. However it took more than 40 minutes, almost an hour, to get our food - 2 cheese pizzas, 1 salad, and 2 fries. A large table of 8 and a table of 2 were served before our table of 4. We arrived first and I assume our order was placed with the kitchen before the other tables that arrived after us. Our order was written down on the staff's arm, too. As we waited, the staff did not apologize for how long it was taking to get our food, made excuses, did not offer us bread or some appetizer, and had a demeanor that they didn't care. So much so that other tables noticed how we were being treated and said something to us and their wait staff. At one point I had to get up and walk across the restaurant to ask about our order. The other wait staff said "the kitchen does this all the time." Lastly, the staff neither comp'd any food for our wait nor offered to give us a discount the next time we came in. We paid full price and were told they don't comp food. The person in charge (not sure if he was the manager or not) apologized but did not offer a solution - he "wanted to get the stories straight." The people at the tables next to us were very nice and caring. It was their first time at Embur and they were definitely concerned about the staff and service shown to us. It was a special occasion, my daughter's birthday and her first time to Embur, too. Not the nice birthday lunch I had envisioned for her. The people next to us felt bad for us and suggested we go to Cheesecake Factory for her Birthday dessert. Good service is important and hope Embur gets it right. read more

Cool vibe and the service was OK, however, the food took way too long to get out and then the waiter brought the check before we were even done eating our entree's.....Really? Rotisserie chicken was very good and reasonably priced. Special fish was good but waiter should have told us it was going to be spicy. This place was a little but out of our way on our drive home (driving from DC to Charleston), but we decided to hit it up. We were both a little hesitant at first (as Peruvians, we are always hesitant of any Peruvian Restaurant serving food like our own kitchen), but WOW, were we impressed. The owner was sitting next to our table talking with his staff (it was Labor Day night) and he noticed our accents in Spanish, and brought us his signature soup--one of my favorite soups and we both are soup people!!! Next were the empanadas which were good, but the Tallarin Saltado was exceptional--he used aged meat which all was cooked to perfection. The bread was great as we tried it with his signature oils! Last but not least, was his Tiramisu, was that a blast--I'm happy to be able to drive back home with a full belly. I believe that we will be back, we are known to drive to hours to restaurants that have good food!!! read more

Last evening, our family of 9 had dinner at Embur. While the food was fine, the service was substandard. We had to wait nearly 15 minutes to order. I ordered ice tea, and, while it took a while to be delivered, I was never offered a refill. As food finally arrived, one order, the least complicated, a salad, took an additional 10 minutes before it arrived. Again, the waiter never checked back with us to see if anything else was needed. The training of the wait staff is substandard as it also appears the kitchen does not know how to process orders. I would be careful in going unless they can improve and your friends make it known . read more

Disappointed! The place is small and very loud. So much background noise that's it's hard to have conversation at your table. The menu is very limited with two basic choices of either chicken or pizza. I had the chicken and rice. The chicken was good - not great- and the rice looked really good but had very little flavor. Take note: chicken is the only protein entree in this restaurant. (Maybe I should say 'currently' - I don't know if they will add other choices later) You can also get salads, pizzas and sandwiches (with chicken added, if you wish), but that's pretty much it. Limited menu, limited seating but way too much noise. They really need to get better acoustics - even with only 7 tables occupied, we still had to lean across the table to hear one another. I worried about the long-term effects of working in that noise. We must have gotten the same server as another reviewer - unknowledgeable, awkward, told me there was no side salad available, (but another server overheard us and said 'of course'), didn't refill obviously empty water glasses and kept interrupting us to ask if everything was good. Of the four of us, two got the quarter chicken (must have been a really tiny chicken!) which they said was tasty - the rice was 'interesting' and the fries were just fries. The Margherita pizza was basic and good and I got my side salad which was wilted and soggy with dressing. All I can say is that it was a noisy and mediocre experience. Plus Viva chicken gives you free unlimited dipping sauces, can't wait for them to open. $1.50 for 1/2 spoon homemade hot sauce, more like sriracha.... give me a break. Won't be going back. The restaurant is rather small and cramped with the tables very close together. The noise level when the restaurant was full was SO incredibly loud we could barely hear each other speak. I asked the server what the best thing on the menu was. She said she loved the chicken and steered us away from the sandwiches, so we ordered based on her recommendations. We ordered the 1/4 white chicken with the Peruvian rice, 1/2 chicken with fries and salad, and an order of maduros. We asked to have the black beans and rice instead of the fries and salad and was told no. I've never eaten at a restaurant where they wouldn't swap sides. The white meat chicken was dry and I wish I ordered a sandwich. I would say Embur is a twist on Peruvian food as the chicken and Peruvian sauce had some unusual spices. The rice had an overwhelming smokey flavor that I didn't care for. It took a while to get our food and we had to ask the server to refill our water a few times. There was also a sign on the door of the women's restroom that said to shut the light to save energy which I thought was ridiculous and embarrassing on their part. If I were to go back, and that may not be for awhile, I'd try the pizza and would not reorder the chicken. read more

We went with friends tonight. There were 5 of us and there was a 20 minute wait. That would be fine but there is really no place to wait. The restaurant is small. Two people in our party had the Embur sandwiches with fries and both said they were good. I had the 1/4 chicken and asked for dark meat and was given a breast. The meat was dry the rice horrible. I had at best 6 oz of tea and when I asked for a refill I was told I would have to pay another $1.80 for a refill. My friends ordered beer which I determined by the time it took to get it they must brew it themselves. My friends ordered a pizza and 1/2 chicken. The pizza looked good but her husband finally received his chicken at the end of everyone else's dinner. Thank goodnes s his wife had a pizza he could help eat. They asked for it to go and finally received it in 2 boxes and a small cup. Finally another waitress offered them a bag. The waitress knew how to say "I'm sorry" and not much else. They did not offer to take anything off their bill since he never got it during dinner. IF I eat there again I will either eat pizza or a sandwich but it will be a long time before I go again. I think the waitress needs training. read more
