I booked a couples massage here based on other yelp reviews. As expected, a superb relaxing massage and a great value.

The receptionist was very friendly and showed us all the amenities of the spa. Even though we weren't staying at the hotel, we still would have access to all the features, such as the gym. We started off in the changing rooms which were really nice and clean. There were a lot of little goodies available to help you freshen up before your service. We were also each given a locker key, sandals, and a robe which we appreciated. Once you are changed, you wait in the lounge where the staff will get you when they are ready. The lounge was water, coffee, tea, and a handful of snacks available while you wait. My husband and I were picked up promptly at our start time and were led into our room. The ladies that worked with us were great and did a good job adjusting things for us as needed. Since I'm pregnant, they had special pillows for me so that I could lay in my stomach. Overall, this was a great experience and we would definitely come back!

I was assured accommodations were available, but when we arrived, the staff member checking us in was rude and dismissive when we asked about the products being used. She seemed annoyed when we asked her to verify whether anything was sulfate-free. Because they couldn't confirm safe products, our soaking tub ended up being filled with just warm water instead of any of the advertised aromatherapy, Himalayan salt, or coconut milk options -- yet we were still charged full price. No apology or acknowledgment was offered despite the incorrect information given prior to our visit. It was especially disappointing because we otherwise had a great experience at the hotel, but the spa service and customer care did not match that standard.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with soft lighting, calming scents, and an overall sense of peaceful elegance. Every corner feels thoughtfully designed to help you unwind--clean, soothing, and truly relaxing. It's the kind of place where your shoulders drop the second you walk in. The front desk team deserves their own recognition. Their high energy, genuine warmth, and constant smiles set the tone instantly. They greet you like they're actually happy to see you, not just going through the motions. The staff creates an environment that feels friendly, comforting, and completely welcoming. They're attentive without being intrusive, and the energy at the front makes you feel taken care of from the start. All together, the atmosphere and the team make Spa on the Plaza a place you want to return to again and again--inviting, relaxing, and refreshingly positive. A true gem in Monterey.

I was a guest at this hotel and stopped by in-person to make an appointment. The spa had pamphlets…read moreof services in different areas of the hotel, including one in our room. I noticed the prices of the pamphlet in our room was different than the prices listed in the pamphlets throughout the hotel. When I was making my appointment at the spa, I was told the services I wanted were not available. The receptionist helped me choose services that were similar, with one of the services not listed on any of the pamphlet I'd seen. I asked for the prices and she told me the final total would be $230. I came back for my appointment a few hours later and arrived 20 min before the scheduled session. I got changed quickly and waited for my turn. The massage therapist did not invite me into the room until after my scheduled session time. She gave me about four minutes to undress and get onto the massage bed. When she came back into the room, she shuffled around and took another three minutes to get settled in. By this time, almost 10 min had passed after my scheduled massage time, and I was curious whether the clock started when she invited me into the room or when she started the massage. Unfortunately, when the session was over and I calculated the time, she started the time when she invited me into the room, and not when the massage began. The massage itself was not good. I got an equivalent to a Swedish massage, and her technique did not involve long swedish strokes. She used very short and abrupt strokes and although the pressure was good, the technique was not. She also kept pulling hard at the sheet that I was laying on from under me every few minutes because the sheet was not tucked in and it would move. She was also very loud at everything, from walking to breathing to coughing to taking her hand off my back to scratch herself. I heard it all. This contributed to the impossibility for me to drift off into relaxation or a nap. I also got the seaweed detox mask on my spine, which is supposed to draw out toxins, including heavy metal. Sadly, the aluminum foil she used to cover the mask over my skin likely negated the mask's efficacy. After the session, I checked out and a different receptionist was present. There was confusion as to what services I was paying for, and I almost got charged for my services and someone else's service. Ultimately, it appeared to be sorted out and I was told the total was $280 ($50 more than what I was initially told). I got an itemized receipt of what I was paying for and was shocked to see that the 15 min add-on seaweed detox mask costed $95. I paid and left without incident. I would have expected a better experience at a nice hotel like this one. It is worth noting as a final thought to this review that every person I came across at the spa were nice, but the actual treatments, organization, and communication amongst staff fell short.

The only negative is that I feel the hotel walls are very thin so right toward the middle of my relaxing a bunch of kids were above my treatment room jumping off the bed and running back and forth. Here are some of the good and could be better Points: Good! - discount for locals! - nice sauna and steam room - facilities are very nice and relaxing - service from all staff was outstanding! - massage was pure heaven! I'll be back for sure. Could be better... - because it's a hotel (I guess) you need a key to get in the building. Then you need a key to get in the locker room. OR you press a buzzer or call the number on the door. Makes for a bit of an awkward first impression / not easy to go back and forth from treatment area upstairs to locker room with sauna and steam room downstairs. - there are no alcoholic beverages available. When we inquired about having a birthday toast they suggested we could bring our own bubbly and sit outside in the hammocks/swings. We did this and it was very nice! But see the point above about getting back in. Bit challenging! - Here's an easy one to fix: there is no cold water in the locker room so if you go in the sauna you'll need to go back upstairs to refill your cup or water bottle then have someone let you back into the locker room. A simple water station in the locker room would solve this issue, - Toiletries are available (a plus!) but on demand (not convenient). Would be great to have a few common items out like many spas (deodorant, hair spray, hair ties, etc.)
