I was a guest at this hotel and stopped by in-person to make an appointment. The spa had pamphlets of services in different areas of the hotel, including one in our room. I noticed the prices of the pamphlet in our room was different than the prices listed in the pamphlets throughout the hotel. When I was making my appointment at the spa, I was told the services I wanted were not available. The receptionist helped me choose services that were similar, with one of the services not listed on any of the pamphlet I'd seen. I asked for the prices and she told me the final total would be $230. I came back for my appointment a few hours later and arrived 20 min before the scheduled session. I got changed quickly and waited for my turn. The massage therapist did not invite me into the room until after my scheduled session time. She gave me about four minutes to undress and get onto the massage bed. When she came back into the room, she shuffled around and took another three minutes to get settled in. By this time, almost 10 min had passed after my scheduled massage time, and I was curious whether the clock started when she invited me into the room or when she started the massage. Unfortunately, when the session was over and I calculated the time, she started the time when she invited me into the room, and not when the massage began. The massage itself was not good. I got an equivalent to a Swedish massage, and her technique did not involve long swedish strokes. She used very short and abrupt strokes and although the pressure was good, the technique was not. She also kept pulling hard at the sheet that I was laying on from under me every few minutes because the sheet was not tucked in and it would move. She was also very loud at everything, from walking to breathing to coughing to taking her hand off my back to scratch herself. I heard it all. This contributed to the impossibility for me to drift off into relaxation or a nap. I also got the seaweed detox mask on my spine, which is supposed to draw out toxins, including heavy metal. Sadly, the aluminum foil she used to cover the mask over my skin likely negated the mask's efficacy. After the session, I checked out and a different receptionist was present. There was confusion as to what services I was paying for, and I almost got charged for my services and someone else's service. Ultimately, it appeared to be sorted out and I was told the total was $280 ($50 more than what I was initially told). I got an itemized receipt of what I was paying for and was shocked to see that the 15 min add-on seaweed detox mask costed $95. I paid and left without incident. I would have expected a better experience at a nice hotel like this one. It is worth noting as a final thought to this review that every person I came across at the spa were nice, but the actual treatments, organization, and communication amongst staff fell short. read more

First time at this spa, everything was nice, my massage was good, I liked some of the touches like weighted heat they used throughout. The only negative is that I feel the hotel walls are very thin so right toward the middle of my relaxing a bunch of kids were above my treatment room jumping off the bed and running back and forth. I have had two massages at the Spa Intercontinental Clement Monterey. Ann Marie, a very experienced massage therapist, was so good at taking way my travel stress that I fell asleep on the table. Mimi is new to the crew, but her gentle touch and bright spirit created its own relaxing magic. The outdoor area is what is special for me. The lap pool is on a 2nd floor terrace outside the waiting area, with a spa tub at the far end. The gym and shower room is right next to the pool so I was able to use all the facilities. A glass of complimentary champagne from the spa and half an hour in the tub after a massage set me up for a long evening to enjoy the C Restaurant and the magical lights of the bay from the 1st floor terrace beyond. I plan on another afternoon like that in the near future. read more

Simply amazing. To start, I was running late due to traffic. My reservation was at 5:30 due to all the accidents, a 2 hour drive to Monterey became 3. I called the spa ahead of time to let them know I'm on my way and they said I can still come in, but my appointment for a 50 min massage will be shorter. By the time I got there it was 5:45 so I expected a 35 min massage. That's not what I got. I went to hurry up and change into the rob and slippers and met my masseuse who kindly told me to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the experience. So that's what I did. I put my phone away, took a breath, and released all the stress and anxiety of being late. As a result, I got a 50 minute relaxing experience...despite being late. She focused on my back and did magic. It was an aroma therapy massage so the scents of lavender and mint and everything else was real soothing. Perfect start to my weekend get away. Well, I had one of the best facials at this location over the weekend. We were staying at The Intercontinental Hotel, which is an awesome location! Everything is within walking distance. My esthetician was Brittany, and she was amazing! Friendly, professional, and had the perfect amount of talking involved during the appointment. I really felt like I had, "new" skin after my "designer facial". She had some great recommendations for me. I really enjoyed her personality and professionalism. When I get home, I'll be sending a formal letter to the GM of the hotel. I hope they take care and appreciate this spa employee and everyone that works for this hotel chain. The only reason why I am giving this place 4 Stars instead of 5, is because the spa facility is smaller. This location has a small pool and jacuzzi you can enjoy prior to your appointments. 5 stars for my therapist Rachael! Best massage I've ever had! I got the Groupon deal for the 80 min aromatherapy massage with back treatment and a complimentary mimosa. I had a wonderful experience with this spa. The booking process was easy, and I thought the decor was great. I would have preferred to wait in a more private area in my robe rather than the waiting room, but in the waiting room they had lemon water and fruit so I just mainly stood up and looked at the pool area out back until Rachael got me. They have the option of three essential oil scents. They have lavender, eucalyptus, and a blend that has orange, cinnamon, and Cyprus. I wanted to try the blend but went for lavender because that always relaxes me. I've never been able to feel so at ease during a massage! I fell asleep for a little bit of it, and usually I'm so tense from getting knots worked out. Rachael worked out all the kinks I wanted her to focus on, but I was so relaxed at the same time. The back treatment was awesome. It started with a refreshing exfoliant and ended with a mud mask that was left on while she focused on arms and legs. My back felt as smooth as baby skin after and I loved it. After the massage I went out to the pool area for a bit. I had my complimentary drink at that point and enjoyed the jacuzzi. The pool was a long rectangular lap pool. Pretty cool, but I though a regular pool would be better because it can get crowded easily if hotel guests are already using it. When I was leaving I saw a few kids in it, and if you look at the pics you'll see why you wouldn't want to go in if someone else is already in there. Luckily when I went I had the place to myself. Overall, 5 stars for Rachael! If I could afford getting bi weekly or even monthly massages I would go to her all the time. The only small downsides are waiting in your robe in the waiting area where anyone can come in, not much locker room/changing place, and the small pool area. There is also only one bathroom, but inside they have these baskets with hair dryers/hair products, hair ties, razors, and a lot of other essentials. They thought of everything for those baskets. I had a great experience with this spa and was so glad they had the Groupon deal. Will definitely be back for those "treat yo'self" days. read more

This review is just for the spa. I brought my wife there for a massage and use of the anemities. She enjoyed the massage hands down but the pool area was small and the the hotel guests have access to it. Not a bad thing but if my wanted to swim or lounge there she has the chance of running into kids or families staying at the hotel. Kind of takes away from the spa/relaxing experience. Awesome people work here. We had an appointment at 5 PM for Couple's Twilight Massage and requested to have a male and female masseuse. Just after we arrive (5 PM for our appointment), one of the masseuse had a family emergency and she had to leave. So, we were asked to wait until 6:30 PM. While waiting, we had a chance to work out at the hotel gym then relax in the sauna while drinking Mimosa. When it was our time, we were greeted by Adrian and Melanie who were courteous and professional. They led us to the room where we had our massage. The room was nice, quiet, with dim lighting to get you into the relaxing mood while soft music was playing in the background. That's the whole purpose of going to a massage, isn't it? To relax. Both Adrian (according to my wife) and Melanie (According to me) was gentle and soft spoken. I have been to a few places but both Adrian and Melanie stood out from the rest. If you get a Groupon or something like that, just ASK when you make your appointment how much to tip. They will tell you, and then there will be no surprises and the people who made your day will be adequately compensated for their services. 20% is normal for spa services, and spa services at hotels are expensive. So, just budget that in. My friend and I had a "spa day" here, and the staff and services were excellent, especially the highly skilled aestheticians and the excellent image brand products that they use. It is very clean, pleasant, and relaxing. I loves the Vitamin C facial so much I bought some to take home. it would be nice to have a sauna and a spa/hot tub in the spa. read more

I have to start off my saying WOW! This place was perfect. From start to finish this place blew me away. The person I talked to while booking my appointment, Christina, was nice and so personable. She helped me plan the perfect massage and asked me about all my preferences. Great customer service! Now onto my appointment. They send you a reminder email with all the details. They validate parking which is fantastic!! When I arrived I was greeted with a lovely smile and the receptionist (didn't catch her name) walked me back to the changing room. I waiting in the waiting room for my therapist. There they had a variety of teas, fruits, and water. Which was really nice. Melanie my massage therapist was hands down AMAZING. She totally went above and beyond to make my massage great. She really went the extra mile. For example when I was facing downward, she attached a tissue that had some lavender (the scent I had chosen) mist to the face rest to help me fully relax. She focused on the areas that I wanted and continually made sure I was ok with the pressure. I had my best sleep after this massage. And finally the cherry on top. Once I left I forgot to get my ticket for validating parking. The receptionist was nice and didn't make me walk all the way back. Instead she called the garage and just informed them of my car type. Other than your service, there really are very few amenities. I was hoping the pool and spa were really beautiful and there'd be a sauna or steam room, but neither of those things are available. It's also strange that there is one shower room and you have to be let in by someone and you have to go through the pool or gym. The place isnt' laid out very well, unfortunately. I feel lucky that my boyfriend and I had a good experience here considering looking over the previous reviews about people using a Groupon deal here. Right when I emailed The Spa with a question about booking, I received a reply within minutes of sending it. Not only was the process of booking smooth, they also accommodated for my boyfriend and I to be put in a couples room, even though our Groupons were for individual massages. When we actually arrived at The Spa we were immediately greeted by their front desk receptionist and brought to the back changing room. Although it is a small space, I immediately noticed how well kept and clean the entire spa was. They even provide toiletry items for anyone that might have forgotten anything (hair ties, combs, q-tips, etc.). Our massage therapists were quick to come out and very friendly. I had Melanie, and I was very happy with how she asked me how I was doing throughout the massage, her technique really helped my upper back get some knots out that were bothering me for awhile. She also had a really laid back, but professional persona - she made me feel very comfortable! Unlike others, my boyfriend and I were not pressured, nor given a receipt with the cost of tip. Although we did, I can see how that could turn off some customers from thinking about returning here. Luckily we never had anything of that sort come up throughout our experience at the spa. In fact, if we come to the area again, we would totally consider coming back here for another massage... or even a facial! read more

My friend and I bought discount certificates for $149 from TravelZoo for a 50 minute massage, 50 minute facial, 30 minute scrub and a Mimosa. We arrived early, thinking that we would have time for a sauna or steam first. WRONG. There are neither -- not even a shower! There is a small hot tub and a lap pool that would be comfortable for only one to use. My masseuse was excellent. He combined the scrub with the massage, so the entire experience took 80 minutes. My friend was not so fortunate. Her masseuse was using more of an effleurage technique, just basically a light touch. So she asked for deep tissue. At that point the masseuse began using her elbow, which my friend found very uncomfortable. She asked her to use her hands for deep tissue, and she just went back to the effleurage. My facial by Ariel was adequate, but not as thorough as I'm accustomed to. When it was over I didn't have that baby-smooth feel that I'm accustomed to. My friend also had Ariel. Part of the deal was supposed to be a Vitamin C mask, but she refused to give it to my friend because she had had Moze surgery 2 months ago and she had a red spot on her temple. Ariel refused to work around it and just skipped the mask, instead massaging her hands. The changing room is a closet, barely big enough to turn around. If there's more than one person changing you have to take turns. There is only one bathroom, used by clients and staff both. Now the kicker is that when we were leaving they informed us that there is a mandatory 20% tip on the full "value" of the service, which they said was normally $310. So the gratuity they CHARGE is $62. That's not a tip. That's a fee and should not be called a gratuity. A gratuity is when you decide how much to pay for excellent service. I get either a massage or a facial every Wednesday. I give a tip that's a bit over 15%, which is considered normal. I pay $49 for my massages and $59 for my facials. I reserve with the same people week after week. My tips are in line with what the salons recommend -- $8.00 for the massage and $10 for the facial. So my facial, massage and tips are a total of $127. I paid a total of $221 at Intercontinental for what was supposed to be a deal. I expected a luxury spa, and this place did not meet that expectation. Did I feel that I was duped? YES. The moral is... The Spa at the Intercontinental Hotel is located on the second floor across the street walkway, tucked in a corner by the outdoor Jacuzzi and lap pool. It offers facials, massage, body treatments, make-up, etc., but it doesn't have a sauna, steam room, or indoor Jacuzzi, thus the 3.5 star rating. There are only 4 lockers and a small but pretty relaxation room with doors to the pool. This is not a place you come to spend the day. My massage by Ann Marie was exactly what I wanted and she would merit 5 STARS. I believe that if a spa is charging $125 and above for 50 minutes, it needs to also have a steam room, sauna, showers, and private Jacuzzi if it wants a 4 or 5 STAR rating. Tea, water, and fruit are offered after your service. Staff are helpful and kind, the rooms are clean, the spa just needs to add the amenities. read more

Totally disappointing, since I've been to this hotel before and really wanted to go back. Seems awfully fishy to me.
