I moved here 3 years ago and this place was great. As time went on, there were less crystals and more knick knack type of stuff. Their items are more pricey and the same quality as other gift stores like this. The staff has always been so kind, sweet, and helpful. But this last time I went in Joy was behind the counter with Nan. Nan was sweet and helpful but Joy was short, dismissive, not helpful, quick to say they don't have something, which she never looked for, and I found one later walking around, and was confused when I said are you going to gift wrap it? Usually that's the first thing they ask here. But Joy seemed put out. As I now am not making eye contact and typing on my phone. I think Joy knows I'm an unsatisfied customer. Trying to be nice as we are walking out the door. Made my experience very unjoyful. read more

This is one of my favorite shops in Sarasota. Every time I go in to Elysian Fields, I always come out with something. Whether it be for myself, a friend, or family member, there is something (many things really) for everyone and anyone. Great selection of stones, jewelry, cards, books, incense, and more! Nothing you need but everything you want. Mostly carries "alternative" (i.e. lovely gold Buddhas etc) gifts and beautiful things for the home. I have been going to this store since I was a child and I swear they pipe incense in there that propels you to purchase because I have never walked out of there without spending cash. There is just a nice vibe to the place and really that is what it is all about. They have candles galore, all different smells, all different meanings. They have lotions and potions as well as other oils for any need. They have cards and books, all metaphysically oriented. Great jewelry as well. It's not your mama's small hole in the wall new age store, this place is upscale, beautiful and carries the best stuff. They also have regular tarot readings for what seem to be standard cost. I was recently shopping with my friends and we're refused service upon entry to the store. We had never been to the store before and there was simply no reason to kick us out despite looking young. Despite this, two of the three in the party were adults and the worker kept backtracking from refusing groups of minors, to refusing groups under 21. Not only is it somewhat demeaning to be kicked out of a store for no reason at all, but it also hurts to have wasted the 15 minute car ride to the store just to be turned away. I know I am going to sound harsh but I find this store to be a bit pretentious a la Sarasota. I do like their selection of merchandise, it is a pleasant experience and I buy incense and gifts there often. The sales ladies are nice albeit a bit snooty. Good selection of books which is a dying realm unfortunately. They also offer some interesting events. I unfortunately got a cell phone call the first time I was in there; and had not noticed the sign that said no cell phones (which makes sense). The way the salesperson reprimanded me was a bit over the top. Especially since I picked up and said, "I will call you back I am in Elysian Fields" and hung up. Yet she still seemed to get too much joy out of her power. But lo, I was in the wrong so I guess I deserved it. What the ladies don't realize though is that the fuss they make contradicts the reason they are prohibited - it causes angst for the other shoppers. I have to say that the attitude of the people in this store is a bit annoying. I had the feeling that they felt incredibly superior to just about anyone else, because they were "in the know" or something like that. That said, it's a nice store that you can spend hours roaming around. There is always something to see. I'm not sure this is the place to come if you are looking for something specific. But if you are looking for a gift, or just something fun. This would be a good place to come. Although pricey, the items here are nice. The jewelry is generally hand made and very pretty. Expensive though. The books are really interesting, and it's not just all new age stuff. There are other things too. For example, I bought a "Zombie Haiku" book for my boyfriend. So they do have a sense of humour, which is nice. The one thing that really bugged me (although I'm sure some people find it nice) was the smell. BEWARE: This store deletes negative reviews. The customer service here is absolutely horrible. After purchasing a $50 bottle of essential oil, I came home to discover an empty bottle. Upon discovery, I went back to the store and the manager would not own up to the clerk's mistake of failing to remove the tester and replacing it with a full bottle of essential oil. Instead, she stated the oil evaporated. Essential oils do NOT evaporate in a closed container just as olive oil does not while sitting on your shelf. Do yourself a favor and shop elsewhere. Do NOT go here. They are SCAM artists. read more

My husband and I took a day trip to Sarasota for the day, and had looked up Metaphysical shops before leaving so to say the least this store was on our list. Upon entering the store I didn't feel the same energy you would usually feel with shops of this nature. In my opinion it's an equivalent to say a major chain store like Barnes and Nobles is to smaller bookstores, not to say that it's not a really nice store or that the staff was snobby in anyway but it had more of a commercial feel so to speak. We did find some decently priced Moldavite, which is a rarity these days and I was able to pick up a book and some incense. The selection of tumbled stones was not very large and what they did have was mostly gemstone jewelry ornately set in silver or wire wrapped which of course was on the pricier side. My biggest complaints were that although the staff was friendly, they were also a bit pushy. Every time I went close to a glass case I was asked if I needed any assistance. My husband stated that he was actually followed around the store by an associate and got the vibe that the associate was watching him for possible theft, which to me is not a very comfortable feeling when browsing etc. The other complaint, is that sadly most merchandise was overpriced. Just like a commercial book store I referenced earlier it's something I believe to be expected. All in all my experience was not a bad one but I felt that this store was more a gift shop with eclectic items for sale as opposed to a dedicated metaphysical store. I have been shopping at Elysian fields since I was a child and they first opened 20 years ago (I am currently 22). I have never had a negative experience there and the staff is always amazing. The items are very high quality and you'll never be disappointed with what you bought. Most of the staff is very knowledgeable about the inventory and if they aren't sure about something, they will quickly ask another associate to help you out or look up some information on the product without question. The store is a bit more upscale, so it is a little bit pricey but it is worth it. To any newcomer, the smell may be overwhelming but personally, I find it really relaxing and I love their candles/ incense. I go to Elysian fields for all of my spiritual items for my alter. read more

A couple of friends of mine own and operate stores similar to Elysian Fields in other parts of the country, and usually I am a fan of fun, new age, spiritual shops like this one. Sadly, Elysian Fields misses the mark on what makes stores like this great for me. All of the items in this store are imports. You won't see trinkets, art, or anything neat that was actually made by the hands of any locals. That, to me, is a big let down. I love seeing local work, and native residents being supported for their craft. Instead of local flair, what you'll find here are astronomical prices on neat things that all come from overseas. I guess that's alright, but it gives the store a largely commercial feel instead of a warm and personal touch. The employees, for the most part, are not particularly warm or inviting. I've gone into this store maybe ten times over the span of six years, and I'd say eight out of those ten visits I was doggedly followed around the shop by one or more staff members watching me like hawks as though I were some kind of criminal. It's somewhat off putting to pick up on the anxious vibe a store employee gives off when they are staring at you, and awkwardly following you around expecting you to shoplift. Every time I made eye contact, whichever employee was currently hovering anxiously asked if I needed help finding anything. Nah, I've been asked that ten times in the span of twenty minutes, so please bugger off. I brought my Hispanic husband in here perhaps three times, and Lordt, if you want to see an uncomfortable middle aged white woman squirm, just bring a bearded, tall, male person sans white skin in here for ten minutes. I've practiced several forms of metaphysical healing daily for the past thirteen years, do totem readings, and pre conception energy work. When you wander into such areas you also tend to wander into a bit of snobbery and pretentious behavior. I feel like this place captures that elitist essence quite well. That's not really what I'm into. If you are a middle aged or above demure white woman with a lot of money to spend, I'd say you have the best chance of at least being treated somewhat decently here. If you are younger, of color, or don't fit the image of what a "spiritually enlightened being" looks like, you run the risk of being treated like a lowly, thieving serf in here. Decided to give the store another chance since they were the only store in the area and I did not feel like driving to Tampa. Walked in went to what I wanted to get, saw the price went wow. I understand that stores have overhead but the item was way overpriced. I say this with the knowledge of the wholesale prices. Decided to wait till I could call my friend and ask them if they still wanted the item. At the time I was dressed in professional attire. (seems trivial to note this but very important to review). Received ok service. Got home and called my friend and let her know the price, she said go ahead and pick it up for her anyway. So I came back two days later, dressed in a t-shirt and shorts. When I walked into the store, I went over directly to where the item was at and did not see it there. Went to ask if it was sold out, or just moved. Since they looked like they were doing so rearranging of store stock. After trying to ask someone three times if they had the item still got a snooty yea we have it. Then the told me a price that was $10 more than the last time I looked at it two days ago. ???? Walked out. Never again will I come here. BTW make sure to look at the filtered reviews! read more

It's amazing from the smallest shaped rock or little wooden box to the biggest items in the store...whoever finds the uniquely awesome stuff that fills this amazing store is GIFTED! It's a can't miss if you need some inspiration or a gift for someone special. Since moving to Florida in 2006 I have been a solid customer of Elysian Fields, buying books, Reiki magazines, CD's, greeting cards, incense, essential oils, oil burners, Thyme's fragrance products and crystals over that timeframe. My most recent purchase was a personal treat - a very expensive Tisserand essential oil - sandalwood. I paid over $50 for this small bottle. I took it home and placed it with my other essential oils. I am a Reiki Master and an LMT - licensed massage therapist - and use essential oils as part of my practice. This oil, due to its high cost, was to be a personal treat for me, not one I used everyday. When I got it out to use for the first time some months later, I discovered the bottle to be TOTALLY EMPTY - not one drop. Couldn't believe my eyes. I also noted that it had a number on the bottom of the bottle, which to me signified that it was one of the store's sample bottles. When purchasing an essential oil at Elysian Fields, one must select the oil from the display shelf and bring the bottle to the counter where the clerk will then take note of the number of the oil and then get the desired oil from the back. I would imagine this is because of the possibility of theft. When I realized that the bottle was empty and then saw the number on the bottom of the bottle, I realized that the clerk must have placed the sample bottle in the box by mistake, and so I returned it to the store, with no other thought in mind that they would not make good on this error. I told the counter clerk/manager the situation and showed her the bottle. She was adamant that I had indeed received a full bottle of the dear essential oil at the time of sale, and it must have evaporated over the time since I had purchased it. Let me say that I have had many bottles of oil for many years and have never experienced an oil evaporating on me. (Have you ever had a bottle of olive oil miraculously evaporate on your kitchen shelf?!) There was, however, no arguing with the clerk. When she asked me what I would like her to do, I replied that I just wanted her to make good on the empty bottle and give me the full bottle I had paid handsomely for. She said she could not do that and offered no recompense. I then told her that for all my purchases at the store (and their computer has record of them), she would not see me again. What an outrage, an absolute outrage. I have also made certain that my LMT friends and people at the spiritualist church I attend who frequent this store know of this incident. So beware!! read more

My Dad got me a giftcard for Christmas from this store and I had fun picking out unique earrings and a lovely shawl. When entering in the store a lady abruptly greeted myself and my mom telling us they were closing in 3 minutes. Feeling rushed we browsed the store for only 2 minutes and then when trying to leave the store the door was already locked. I like Elysian Fields, its the best spiritual store I've found since moving to the area. They have a great selection of product, from books to essential oils to cards to stones. I enjoy that every deck of cards that they sell has a display copy so you can actually view the deck before deciding to purchase. I've had one reading from Elysian Fields, it was a positive experience, though I think I would prefer a different reader next time. (That statement isn't caused by lack of talent on their part, just simply personal preference on mine.) They do psychic fairs off and on where the price of a reading is slightly lowered, which is nice. I do however wish they had more of a selection of books regarding mediumship - as far as I can tell, there really isn't much. Yes the parking lot is a real tight squeeze - be careful. However if you drive all the way to the end of the row, the space opens up a bit and is a little easier to navigate. As far as the cell phone issue goes, they have a sign right at the door asking you to silence your phone. It's hard to miss it... Will definitely be shopping there more often. read more

I had a VERY pleasant experience in this store, and was greeted upon entry. The ladies at the counter were kind, friendly and welcoming. There was a booksigning taking place and they directed me to it. I am a very observant person and pick up easily when vibes are off, or when I feel uncomfortable, and I did NOT here. Not sure what some folks are talking about regarding snobbiness, but if you walk in someplace feeling bad, skeptic or defensive, people will only reflect to you what you feel. Nice store but way overpriced! Visiting this store on vacation, I was appalled at the overpricing throughout the store. In Arizona I own my own boutique and numerous items offered at Elysian Fields are also sold at my shop. Many items at Elysian Fields are sold for almost three times the wholesale price! Customers can go online and purchase most of the items for substantially less than this store sells them for, including shipping. For example, in Arizona, Cosanti Originals is local and they make and sell beautiful windbells. Online Cosanti sells their windbells for purchase by the public. Elysian Fields also sells Cosanti windbells in their store and from what I saw, they pride themselves on being a reseller of Cosanti. One of the windbells I was looking at in the store is tagged at $193 and the bracket to hold the windbell tagged at $49.95. Online at www.cosanti.com, the same windbell can be purchased (non-wholesale) for $63.00 and the bracket for $18! It is one thing to markup a product, it is another thing to rip customers off. Because I am also a wholesale buyer at Cosanti, I will be notifying them of the horrendous markups done by Elysian Fields in Sarasota. It is important to support local shops. Local shops also need to be aware of overpricing and moderate the online prices of items they offer in a non-greedy manner. From what I noticed about Elysian Fields and the area the store is located in, this is the only detail keeping them open is the rich people who don't pay attention to price tags. read more

I have never written a Yelp review and this is my first. I just want to say that I have been coming to Elysian Fields shortly after I purchased my home in 1997. I have been going as long as I have lived in the area. I also spend time in and out of the country but whenever I am in town or need a gift, there I go. That being said, I have accumulated a vast collection of items from the shop over the years, including jewelry. I've attended some workshops as well. Anyway, I felt complelled to write this in hopes that the owners or management reign in on what is happening in their store. Unless of course, they are tired, and it is hard being in retail after this long. I love the store, I really do. It actually makes me sad not to give 5 stars. I love the items. It is a well done store. So, I realize that the store closes at 6:00 pm. This past Saturday, my husband, daughter, a friend (who had never been) and I arrived to the store at 5:46. We had planned to get there earlier but it just could not happen. I was searching for a gift, aiming on most jewelry. My husband dropped us off at the door to save time. The first sales girl was 20 years old, and reminded us immediately that the store closes at 6. She was kind enough, and understandably was gearing to close. However she was still helpful when she was nearby. My husband parked and came in max 2 minutes after, and the other blond haired Pixie in a certain 'tone' told my husband that 'we close at 6". Both my friend and I told her that we realized. She reminded him again (I guess she assumed he never heard but he knows---in fact it was his idea to come here for the gift) that closing time was 6. I said to her that "we realize and he knows what time you close, as he is with us." The blond employee seemed more experienced than the other young lady, but I have to say was quite rude, and all of us could feel that she was just waiting for us to get out of the store (if not showing us to the door). I had my eye on a ring and I asked her if it was a smokey quartz stone, and she was annoyed. Finally after repeatedly saying she doesn't know what type of stone it is because she can't see it from behind the counter, she came out and said "yes, it looks like a smokey quartz". She didn't offer for me to see, it and at this point her behavior irked me enough not to even ask. I didn't take the ring..In fact I didn't buy anything which is unusual. My husband even commented the whole ride home about how stand offish she was. All 3 of us could feel the unwillingness. I realize it is difficult to find good staff. Perhaps it is just a part time job or just a college job. I realize it was close to 6, and I am sure that we must have had big plans after work and we, the customers, were an annoyance to be showing up close to closing time. How dare we. It couldn't be helped. I would not have expected the store to remain open much later than 6--I get it- you want to go home. The vibe the store is wanting to create and keep will continue to disappear with staff like this. They lost a sale on Saturday...a sale that would have been the last of the day. We have our own business and I can tell when reviews are 'crap' or not. I can promise you this is just hoping that the owners maybe look objectively and make some positive changes to bring back the vibe. An employee such as this kills it. I am sure I will shop again at some point I love the items. But I posted this review because though this 'reminder that we close in x minutes' is not the first I have heard from the store ( I have been in the store and heard it said to other customers), this is the first time rudeness and tone was directed at us. If I was the owner I would want to know as I am sure this is the vibe you want. Perhaps she thought we were just one time shoppers, we leave.
