I randomly walked into this place just to get a brewed coffee. It was 3$ for a coffee which comes in small size only. The coffee was so strong that I tried to put 3bags of sugar and that didn't help. Much smaller portion for drinks IMO for the cappuccino . First sip tasted like the espresso was burnt during brewing. I was taken aback as I was not expecting this from a place that consistently rated at the top. After 2-3 sips the sweetness of the milk mellowed out the espresso and it became better. I think 49th Parallel is still tops. BTW their clover brewing system looks awesome as they do brew single cups at a time and it seemed to be the popular drink there. read more

It took us a while to find this coffee shop compared to the other ones, but once we did, we loved it! The coffee selection is good, and the espresso is nicely pulled. The drip coffee is served in a mini-french press, which is adorable. The baked goods always look super tasty, but have yet to indulge in them. The vibe is also nice at this place - folks behind the counter are friendly and aren't in a rush to get you out, and don't make you feel silly if you aren't sure which single origin fair trade bean you want in your coffee. Came here twice to try some coffee and teas. I found the seating to be limited. It is nice that they serve sparking water. The seats should be replaced soon as they are all cracked from wear. Where is the bathroom for customers?! During my first visit, my latte was pretty good but then I found a hair while sipping it. I figured it was a freak accident and not intentional. I did not manage to go back for a replacement. During my second visit, I decided to try a crimson berry tea and sat by the window. The place is considerably less busy at 6pm. The tea was also good quality and I managed to get 2.5 cups from the teapot. I did not see the bathroom when I needed one but went next door to Rogue as I had dinner plans there afterwards. Overall, alright place for coffee and teas. I think I will visit the other coffee shops in the area before I come back. read more

Pro: Not sure if this is still the case now, but they've had one of Vancouver's best baristas for a long while. Smoothest cappuccino you'll ever have in town. Every drink I've had there for the past few years is excellent. Oh ya, and they have free sparkling water to cleanse your palette pre/post drink. I hope they never stop offering that. Con: Hard to find a seat, not ideal for people who want to sit and read or do work for hours and hours. No wifi except in the evenings, I think? Little comfy coffee spot! I like their coffee but I like their bake goodies more! Chocolate walnuts cookies , shortbread cookies, scones etc... it's pretty pricy though for a small pieces , the tastes so good so I have to have them whenever I go there to have coffee. One more things I like about this coffee shop, they offer you free water/sparkling water if you order any drinks and sweets . It used to to be located at the seating area so the costumer can have it freely when they need some water to go with coffee and snacks but now it's behind the cashier so we have to ask them to refill :( Still it's nice offer for customer though ! Doing a casual tour of all the Vancouver coffee shops! Stopped by Elysian today with a friend. Has a great vibe inside, was nice and cozy on a rainy day. Had an excellent Americano. Also had a cheddar scone which I didn't love, because it had a lot of dill in it - kind of a weird addition! Price for americano & scone was $7.25 which is reasonable for Vancouver. I came here with 1 other friend on a Saturday afternoon (1pm). There was a constant line up for about 2 people while I was there. The atmosphere is very nice and the chairs and tables were relatively clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful upon questions and the drinks were very well done. It is not too loud as well! However, the one down side to this place is that seating is often full, so you must be pretty lucky to land a seat. People in Vancouver love their coffee cafes... read more

Sorry, Elysian, still not doing it for me. Though an elitist in many respects -- including my coffee -- I'm no snob, and will down (and be forgiving of) a mediocre cuppa when the time calls for it. This is not a food review, this is a human review. Situated in the health care hub of Vancouver, as an optimistic health care provider I hope for patience with hospital patients . The lady in front of me was clearly ill, with her caregiver, and she left before even paying for her order because she was so flustered from the hurried service. My mouth was actually agape as I watched this poor lady slowly walk out of the coffee shop. I then was told having an espresso cup in a to-go cup was not possible because I would lose the integrity of the espresso. Ok, really? I just want a shot of espresso, get over yourself. Regardless, I found myself in Elysian for a casual business meeting on another hot, beautiful day in Vancouver. Elysian Coffee measures up quite well on coffee, wireless, and ambiance. 49th parallel roasts for these guys. The espresso roast is sensible, not too dark and overpowering, but rounder like chocolate. This is nice if you appreciate your canadiano simple. The wireless has been reliable and easy. Tables are a good size if you need to roll up 'em sleeves to poke on facebook. There's been plenty of room, though it has only opened and the natural laws of coffee should result in high traffic here. Elysian keeps it classy by combining simplicity with nowrthwest cabin paneling to create a modern ambiance reminiscent of our dear friends down in portland, stumptown. Overall, a welcome addition to vancouver's cafe circuit. read more

Hands down the best coffee I have ever had in Vancouver :) Typical Karen behaviour would have meant two tablespoons of honey automatically being dumped into the cup to remove the bitter/sour aftertaste. But today, God predestined me to do something else: I tasted the coffee BEFORE adding the honey (gasp) and entered into a state of caffeinated bliss. Smooth and rich - those are the two unoriginal but accurate words that instantly come to mind. Their muffins are also flavorful, moist and healthy. They steer away from the typical blueberry and lemon poppyseed muffins and instead, offer selections like carrot ginger and cranberry walnut with zucchini. Not feeling the Elysian love at all. An espresso pulled with Intelligentsia Black Cat beans that has a bitter finish is a big problem. If I wanted a bitter espresso I could have walked up the block to Starbucks or Blenz and saved over a buck. I normally don't add any type of sweetening to my coffee beverages but in this case I had to. Sadly, their only sweetening options are sugar and Sweet 'N Low. I Sooo agree with Rachel T. I had heard about this place from others and was told the coffee and ambience was fantastic. After a couple to visits (first impressions can't always be trusted), I have to say that my overall impression was... meh. The coffee was, indeed, good - what there was of it. The ambience? I found it a tad sterile and a lot snobby. The wait staff was, imo, quite rude both times, eyes rolling when we asked if there was a bigger cappuccino available and otherwise uninviting it their demeanor when we attempted to make light conversation. Came by for the first time today. Iced coffee, iced chai (with oat milk) and a walnut chocolate chip cookie. Each item was fantastic. Was especially impressed with the chai as it wasn't overly sweet and you could actually taste the spices (couldn't even tell it was oatmilk either). Everytime I drive past this place (which is often enough)... I say to myself, "Next time, I'm coming here for coffee"... EVERYTIME... Well, needless to say - it took a while, but I finally did it! I made it to the coveted Elysian Coffee on West Broadway.... (*insert choir 'aaaaahhhh' here*) And did it live up to what i thought it was going to? Oh it did. It was all that and so much more. SO MUCH MORE. The espresso was fabulous - so complex, with subtle nutty and sweet notes (yes, I used to be a barista back in the day!)... and the treats were simply delectable! Stopped in here on my way home the other day for a quick afternoon pick me up, and after reading so many stellar reviews on Yelp. Ordered a non-fat latte-I usually like it with flavoured syrup, however I couldn't see any on display anywhere and didn't want to ask, so I ordered it plain. I'm glad I did. The latte was so flavourful even without any syrup-strong but not overpowering and bitter. One of the best lattes I've had. Grabbed an oatmeal cookie with it as well, and it was delicious but a little pricey. Would definitely return for the coffee though. I noticed they had chemex brewers as well, which I've had my eye on for awhile-I had planned on asking the barista some questions on brewing with it, but I was in a rush. Guess I have an excuse to go back and get another latte! read more

Good location and good coffee. Ordered their Americano a couple of times and liked the flavour. It had a hint of acid and didn't leave a bitter aftertaste. I'm not a big fan of overly acidic coffee so their flavours worked well for me. The space is also very nice and always bustling with people. read more

A-OK from me! The coffee is good here! I haven't had their cappuccino but I'm sure this isn't the here or now for a whole Lactose-intolerance story. Like that time I was trapped in a bus and I had drank a whole quart of milk the hour before... Anyway, the coffee size here is smaller than average. This being the fact, it's fine by me. The only thing I don't like is the ambiance. Everything inside is very clean looking and modern. So there's nothing comfortable about it. I see lots of people inside all the time, and most of the time they sit where the softer seats are. Those bastards probably won't be moving for a while, because those are the only comfortable seating in the whole place. That being said, if it I wasn't so self-conscious then I'd break out a soft cushion for those high stools by the windows. So overall this coffee place is A-Ok. Definitely not more comfortable than a Starbucks, but if you want a good tasting coffee to go, this place is good for that! read more

Their cookies suck, and they're grossly overpriced! My husband and I stopped by a few days ago and selected two little hold-in-the-hand size bags of cookies: Chocolate walnut and "amaretti". The total for these two bags of cookies: $15 and change. That might (might!) be justifiable as a once-in-awhile treat if the cookies were uncommonly good, but they're not. I put "amaretti" in quotes because whoever selected this recipe has no idea--literally, none--what an amaretto cookie is. There are, of course, matters of taste; different people will prefer different recipes. This is not such a matter; these cookies plain and flatly are not amaretti. There's no discernible almond flavour (Hello?!!) and these contain raisins, which amaretti never do. This is more along the lines of someone's "clever" (not) idea to bake cute little miniature panettones, sorta kinda except not really. They have no coherent flavour, their texture is doughy...they have nothing at all to recommend them. The chocolate walnut cookies are less objectionable (I would hope they would strive for better reactions than "relatively less objectionable" in the products they sell, especially for those prices); the texture's fine, they're just too sweet -- probably because they were made with milk chocolate rather than semi-sweet. To be fair, this objection is reasonably called a matter of taste. But neither of these is remotely cost-effective, because they cost too much and they range from "OK" (chocolate walnut) to "unacceptable" (the pretense at amaretti). This might've been a 2-star review except I wrote to Elysian that same day, asking for a reason why I should give them another chance or nickel. None was forthcoming, nor was any answer at all, hence this 1-star review. read more

Hands-down my favorite coffeeshop in Vancouver so far. Why does it close so early? Elysian Coffee Does Coffee Right. The milk is impeccably textured and the baristas work the Synesso machines masterfully. The beans are roasted specially by the gurus at 49th Parallel. Brewed coffee is made-to-order on a dual-head Clover machine and served out of a glass carafe. Service is friendly and efficient, and customers in the store are treated to a glass of soda water to help prepare the palate. Heaven. The cafe's also lovely. It's new and sharply appointed with plush leather seats along the eastern wall and a bar looking out on the street. All this with WiFi and power outlets? You bet! The pastry selection is small, though, and my piece of cranberry loaf was forgettable. Advice for Starbucks refugees: The Elysian cappuccino is exceptionally good, but it's a traditional cappuccino, which is small. If you want to stretch it further, try the latte. I haven't stopped in their little sister Elysian Room at 5th & Burrard yet, but I'm looking forward to it! read more

Stopped by to do a bit of work. More room in the back than what you expect looking in from outside. The employee provided great service - greeting us as we went inside, asking us if we had any questions about the coffee beans, as well as if we wanted any water. He also brought our drinks to our table when they were ready! I wasn't really expecting this, so it was really great. We had drip coffees and a chocolate cookie, coffee strong and good, and the cookie sweet and of the crumbly variety. When we were trying to figure out the wifi, we were trying to access ShawOpen but were not sucessful and the people sitting beside us told us the wifi and the password! There were people catching up as well as people doing some work, the noise level was fine, just enough background noise to keep things from being too quiet. I was there from around 2 pm - 4 pm on a Thursday afternoon, and it was great! Would love to go back there again some time soon, especially once the coffee beans we got are done! read more

A while back I decided to kick my caffeine habit, I hesitate to use the word addiction because I may still be in a bit of denial, and I actually found it pretty easy. Once the omnipresent craving subsided after a few weeks I found myself able to sit down and enjoy a cappuccino or espresso as a past-time, rather than just another hit. There's a review in here somewhere and I'm getting to it now... Elysian combines the things I love best about most of the other coffee bars I've been to and drops the stuff I hate. The Staff: A+. Everyone here is friendly, helpful and super cheery. The negative connotations of "hipster doofus" get washed away by a staff that is hip, trendy and has excellent taste in music and, more often than not, some sweet mustachios. The Coffee: A+. I'm not an expert on roasted cocoa beans but they seem to have the process down pat. In addition, their ethically sourced beans come with a binder of family pictures from the plantations that provide their delicious brew. I find their humble nod to the hardworking people who provide their coffee wildly more tasteful than Starbuck's schlocky attempt at ethics. The Food: A+. Fresh squeezed orange juice and real Scottish Short Bread. I don't think I said that enough. Real Scottish Short Bread. The salty, sweet, buttery kind that kind of falls apart/melts/crumbles/explodes when you bite it. If I didn't feel myself losing a year off my heart everytime I ate one, I'd probably be able to down the entire display plate. The Atmosphere: A. The only gripe I have about Elysian, and the reason why it gets 4 Stars and not 5 is really a toss-up for me. I'm one of the new breed of Coffee Executives. I love doing my work out of coffee shops and Elysian only provides internet for part of the day. I get the motivation for this, they are a small operation with limited seating and they want it to be a place to sit and chat, not to sit and type. Given my new found appreciation for just siting and enjoying a coffee, this slight irritation will probably fade in time. If you're not a Coffee Executive then I suspect that Elysian will be a 5 Star for sure. read more

This is pretty much five star all the way: 1) Excellent traditional-sized cappuccino 2) Complimentary sparkling water to cleanse your palate pre-espresso 3) Friendly, knowledgeable staff who take pride in the coffee they serve 4) Great tunes and a chill atmosphere 5) Simple, uncluttered menu (no 32oz. "cappuccino" or crappa-frappuccinos) If there is one change I would make, it would be to have more appealing food options. Otherwise, this is one of my favourite coffeehouses in the city. read more

Outside looking in, I was sure this place was going to be fantastic. There wasn't a single vacant seat in the joint and everyone seemed enthralled with their cups of coffee. There was a definite buzz in the air (maybe a sign of one too many cups of coffee, me thinks not...) Everything was going so well until I got to the counter and the guy there opened his mouth... not a hello, not a smile, but rather a blank stare begging the question "what do you want?" When asked about the coffees and the pricing, the response I received made me feel like I was doing them a huge disservice by even thinking to ask that question. After all, how dare I ask the person behind the counter who appears to be an employee a question about the company and their products, which they're representing (or so I thought)... and this sentence seems to go on and on doesn't it... LOL! Anyway, the coffee was pretty damn tasty but I didn't even bother to ask them what the machine was in front of me... that would be sacrilegious don't you know, as any coffee aficionado would know it was a "clover". All in all, I wouldn't recommend going to Elysian unless you are wanting a good cup of coffee with a side of lack luster service. I was on my way home from a doctor's appointment and stumbled upon Elysian Coffee. I remember a friend saying that they had THE BEST coffee in town and that I HAD to try it. So I got a latte with an extra shot of espresso. What I got was a whole cup of watered down coffee. The milk was basically non-existent in this monstrosity, and when I said I wanted an extra shot, I meant of coffee, NOT water! Ewww... there goes six bucks in the trash...
