Somewhere between a 3 and a 4 - I decided to round up. Beautiful atmosphere, great service, cool drinks...and okay food. I came with a friend on a weeknight around 6. As the hours went by, it was fun to see the space seamlessly transform from bright and airy to moody and more intimate. The biggest indication of that is the giant sunset lamp projected on the wall. It's its own photo-worthy moment, and the staff are smart to try and seat around where the sun projection is, as everyone wants picture in front of it. Ellipsis has led the charge on the cafe by day / bar by night craze in Vancouver. I can only speak to the bar part right now, but the drinks are amazing. First, I had their daily special - What's The Tea - which ended up being a negroni. I feel bad for forgetting what exactly was in it, but it was a wonderful "slow sipper." My friend had the Ca Va (croissant-infused gin, baked apple cordial, cinnamon, mini croissant on top). It was a nice drink, but tiny considering it's $21! Now, onto the food, I want to start with the one dish I really REALLY enjoyed, and that was the chicken liver mousse. Served over toasted brioche and topped with agrodolce shallots, it was delightful. Textured, layered, umami...so good! The other things my friend and I ordered were good, but not worth the price in my opinion. Burrata ($24) got lost with all the squash puree. Pappardelle with wild mushrooms ($30) was served pretty lukewarm and I wish there were more mushrooms. For dessert, the macau style egg tarts ($15) could've had a crunchier, flakier crust. While I enjoyed my time here, it was pricey and didn't absolutely blow me away, so I'm not sure I'll be back for awhile. read more

I live in this strata building for over 15 years and have seen tenants come and go over the years. The location is fantastic, have you seen the design of our waterfall? it's an excellent space. The coffee is okay, this place is more about the atmosphere than the food or drinks. It's basically 3 mins (walkable) to the entrance of Granville Island. It has a trendy, modern vibe that's clearly geared toward younger people looking for a cool place to socialize, work, or hang out with friends. If that's what you're after, it's worth checking out. This café received a lot of hype when it first opened, largely due to its cool architectural design--which is also reflected in the interiors. We went right when they opened after a run. I'd recommend arriving early since they don't take reservations and the place gets crowded quickly. We ordered coffee and pastries, and if I had to sum up my thoughts: it's more about aesthetics than taste. The pastries weren't very flaky (despite us arriving early, when I assumed they had just been baked) and were missing that rich, buttery profile. My pistachio line ($7.50) was particularly disappointing. Instead of the rich nuttiness you'd expect from pistachio, it tasted more like pistachio cream. It was a similar story with the coffee. I got one of their signature drinks, the 001 ($9), and found it overly sugary in an artificial way. P.S. I wonder what the residents think about having a commercial space right in the middle of their building. I feel like the noise and smell would drive me insane. read more

This place had been on my list due to the vibes of the building and it was indeed the vibe! I came in the evening just to grab a dessert and some warm drinks with a friend. I'd give a 3.5 solely because it wasn't very clear about what menus were available and the server made it seem that the pastries would be put away for the day shortly after we arrived and told me to order asap. I noticed throughout our time there, that they weren't moved so I'm not sure if there was some miscommunication! It also did take a while for our drinks to be made, likely due to a focus on their dinner service. Regardless, the strawberry croissant cube pastry was super delicious, a bit on the sweet end but definitely made with quality ingredients (~$7), you can for sure share it since it's so decadent. It went very well with my decaf cappuccino. I'd probably come by again if I'm in the area since it has a lovely ambiance! read more

Went to Ellipsis cafe for brunch with my friend, they don't take reservations so its all based on first-come first serve basis. Their interiors are very chic and minimalistic. They were very busy on a Sunday morning, we waited for around 20-30mins for a table of two but I would say it was worth it. However, you could take pastires and drink to-go without any wait! Their seating area is very small so you are kind of smushed between people. We ordered - :: Mango matcha drink which was SOOO good! Best matcha mango I've had. It was essentially a mango compote with matcha :: Burrata and walnuts dates compte with sour dough bread, AMAZING!! The compote was delicious and paired soo well with the burrata and bread. After we placed our order, we had to wait for around 20ish mins, our server was so nice because she felt very bad for making us wait so she told us we could choose any pastry on the house!! We came on a weekday. The dinner menu starts at 5pm. What's your red flag? ($19) - tasted like watered down pineapple like juice. Would pass on this drink Ca va ($21) - cute aesthetically pleasing. Taste wise it was pretty disgusting. The butter washed brandy was really strong. The whole drink gave very strong sugar syrup vibes. Would not get this again So what are we - best drink of the night. Cute bubbly foam on top. Light and fruity Are we there yet - I loved the peanut sesame crunch on top. Again a bit on the sweet side but not bad. Very robust drink Liver mousse brioche ($18) - not bad very. Liked the brioche Mussels brioche ($18) - I liked the curry mussels on this one more than the liver mousse. Good curry flavour. Needed something to freshen it up Puffed taro ($16) - crispy on top and was actually pretty similar to the ones you find at dimsum. Not AS crispy but pretty close. The braised duck was not bad Service was fast but they didn't provide us with the dinner menu once the time hit 5pm. We had to ask for it multiple times. It also would've been nice if they'd offered takeout as an option or suggested we look at the menu first before deciding. The layout of the cafe is unique, though a little awkward. I was in my matcha mango phase and had high hopes, but the drink was just okay, especially after realizing the matcha came pre-prepared in a squeeze bottle (and not even kept in an ice bath). Their pastries looked beautiful, and we'd heard they make a limited number daily. We tried the breakfast danish, but it was served cold, definitely would've been better warmed up. While browsing the pastry case, I also noticed a fruit fly on one of the fruit danishes. I'd recommend they add a sliding cover for better food protection. I enjoyed my matcha mango compote drink while my friend was not a fan of the houjicha. She didn't like the citrus element to it and found the flavors to be more stacked rather than well-immersed and complimentary to each other. The food was a solid 3.8 perhaps because we had a last minute lunch order as the kitchen was closing to prepare for dinner service. We were. Curious about the dinner options and mood later in the evening. Ellipsis offer various type of drinks, baking goods and foods. The decor is very stunning and I really like their contemporary style design. I dropped by and got several baking goods. What I got: Ube Linea, Matcha Linea, Passion fruits cube and Chocolagte Ribbon. All baking goods displayed beautifully, it was so hard to choose. Ube Linea is long stick shaped croissant with ube filling inside. This one was highlight! Ube filling was so delicious, perfect sweetness and matched with dough and cream on the top. I will get it again. Matcha Linea also was good. Decent matcha cream filling inside. Passion fruits cube was also good. Dough was very crispy outside and filling was also very good. This drink is to die for and the taste is on par with the best matcha in Vancouver (paragon). Not only does the real mango puree not interfere with the matcha, the matcha is strong and clear in its taste. No bitterness. So much flavour and compliment each other so well. With a hefty price point at 9.45 per cup. My only critique is the price and the amount of ice that made it hard to stir my drink. Otherwise, there is nothing stopping me from recommending this drink. stopped by around 3:13 pm on a thursday. located inside the waterfall building at 1540 west 2nd avenue, the café sits in that striking glass atrium with geometric angles and sunlight streaming through, still one of the city's most architecturally stunning spaces. the atmosphere was calm but lively enough to feel inviting. two people were quietly working away on their laptops, while a few small groups gathered and chatted, a nice balance between calm and social. ordered a matcha latte with oat milk, which turned out sweet, earthy, and well balanced. the oat milk added a smooth, creamy texture that worked beautifully with the matcha's depth. staff were friendly and service oriented without being overbearing. having been here back when hy's hosted afternoon tea, it was interesting to see how the space has evolved. still just as elegant, those soft burnt orange seats and high concrete walls make it feel both modern and intimate. it filled up quickly not long after i arrived, and it's easy to see why. a solid visit overall. good energy, thoughtful service, and a well made matcha latte in a beautifully designed space. read more

This place is a metaphor for Vancouver. Looks appealing but no substance. The drinks were like sugar syrup and made me feel sick or a recipe for diabetes. We had "what's the tea" and "are we there yet". If you into cocktails, this isn't the place for you. Coupled with bathrooms that were gross - used toilet paper on the seat in the disabled toilets and no soap in the other one. Give this a miss and you're better off at Tap and Barrel or something more generic. I will never be back after spending $45 on two awful drinks!! This place caters to a certain demographic and content creators who don't have palates and just want to get their content and don't like cocktails with depth or say that an old fashioned, Martinez, Boulevardier's are too strong. It's unfortunate that I have to write this because i've never had this sort of experience in Vancouver, especially during a grand opening. I get it, it's a grand opening and all, but to be this sorely prepared amazed me. For lack of a better term, the urgency wasn't there and it felt like the servers were already over being there after only 2 weeks of soft opening and media events. I went to the soft opening and actually had a great time, despite a dish taking longer to appear. Food was yummy and servers were polite and attentive. So I felt like it'd be ok to come again. I would have given 5 stars, but after my second visit, I'm giving 1 star, because a major overhaul needs to happen if they want customers to come back. The staff need to be reorganized to deal with the traffic properly or more staff need to be hired to cover the bases of the restaurant, as my party did not feel they were ready to handle the needs of a grand opening. The take out counter appeared to be swamped with orders and only one person was waiting tables, running (walking) the food to the floor, putting in orders and making cocktails, which is way too much work evidently. There were two people at the coffee bar and selling pastries. So going back felt like a 180 of my original experience. We waited a good 20 minutes to be seated, with nobody behind us and a free table sitting vacant. The server prioritized putting in several orders before finally seating us. We soon realized that people at the sit-in tables were neglected, and the takeout orders were prioritized. It felt like the waiters were ignoring tables on purpose, so much so people would have to go up to the counter to order. By the time we were able to order pastries, the full display case was nearly empty and was not being restocked. After noticing that some tables that came in after us already got their food and we still hadn't gotten our water filled or cutlery, my friend had to go up to the wait staff to ask for our order to be taken and they said "blame my manager". Not apologetic at all, and not an answer we would expect from a place that is trying to give off a classy atmosphere. Our drinks order was incorrect on multiple occasions and the coffee was not passable. My friends remarked that you should just come here for the cocktails. The americano was too watered down and the espresso base was poured first before the water. They ran out of the components to make the peach earl grey cold brew at 10am and offered to make us something else. My friend requested the normal cold brew, and somehow we ended up getting three mango matchas delivered to our table instead?! These were ok, but did not feel like a cohesive, well-incorporated drink. The mango puree was great but the matcha just felt like a separate entity, possibly from concentrate since there was no foam and it was sweetened. We tried to ask about the cold brew we were expecting and missing, and we got an attitude that seemed to put the blame on us instead - that it had been delivered and we had already been told it was out of stock. So we had to speak up and say it was the normal cold brew we were promised. So it was evident that the staff were not in communication with each other. I think that the staff should be better trained at being flexible rather than saying "I can't help with this, I have to ask another person". My friend's yogurt bowl came near the tail end of our experience and it was again, disappointing to them. The yogurt tasted like tzatziki sauce and the honey was missing. The frozen fruit started melting into a puddle in the bowl and it was not a pleasant experience for them. We did not eat it. What surprised us even further was that the waiter brought over another yogurt bowl after 15 mins that looked more appetizing with the honey, and realizing we already got one, said that another table should have received our bowl first. Again no apology, and it seemed like they were mad we had started eating it when it was placed on our table. Still no cold brew. After this, we decided to get up and get the bill and leave. Sad that I had chosen this place to take my friends from out of town, and it left a sour taste in our mouth. This place looks amazing on the outside and even better on the inside. Our server Lorena was super friendly and has the warmest smile. Drinks were affordable and had a good variety while tasty! Food was great and even more impressed to learn some ingredients were made in-house like the brioche toast and pasta. We ordered two cocktails and a few of their 'dinner' menu options. Not seasoned enough... the presentation was beautiful, but the taste was underwhelmingly bland. Overpriced. Over-hyped, and more of a 'scene' than an actual place for people who truly enjoy and respect cuisine or cocktails. Service was disappointing - the only time we were asked how the food was was when we were ready to pay the bill. For the price, wouldn't come here again.
