Overview: been climbing for the past 3 years now and grotto has been a great place to grow and meet…read morepeople ---- I mostly go to their other location which is newer and has more gym facilities (feel free to read my other review if you want the full rundown of G2!). This location has a gym area outside with bar bells, free weights, hangboards, and a punching bag, which all feels like a prison gym in a good way hahah! It's surrounded by a chain link fence facing their small parking lot, but having that outside atmosphere does feel nice especially when there's a breeze. In the same area are 2 moon boards, a spray wall, and some other warmup hangboard things. G1 is their original location and is a little smaller than the Miramar one but is the only one with yoga classes. Their other location no longer provides them and instead turned their old yoga room into another climbing area with moon boards. I've done a few yoga classes here one with Jen and another with Alexis. Both are great and different in their own ways, I thoroughly enjoyed both of their yoga styles and will continue to go when I can. As for climbing, I still love their route setting and facilities, and that they're dog-friendly. Over the years there's been a lot of staffing changes but everyone is still nice and welcoming. The drive from the north can suck when it's rush hour and the parking lot is quite small compared to G2. ---- Overall: great place to climb, do yoga, and play with dogs, pretty small parking lot but cool to come to this location for yoga and the occasional climb

As soon as I am feeling better, Im already monkeying around so I came here on Memorial Day Monday…read moreto do some climbing. VITAL also sent me an email to wish me a happy birthday and I was scratching my head as to how I got on their email list and I think what happened is that I have climbed VITAL in Brooklyn before (like years ago), so thats how I got on the list. I didnt realize they were all connected, so super cool to know this! And they offered me a free day to climb so of course this little gym rat showed up! This is a really nice all bouldering gym and I really enjoyed my time here! I still like Mesa Rim the best but this gym is purely for bouldering and I am biased towards all bouldering gyms!! Alex helped me out and was very nice. He had me fill out a waiver, you do have to watch a 2 minute video about how climbing is dangerous and how to fall. I loved this gym because everything felt spacious but also not a lot of people today so that was cool. They also had a lot of their windows and doors opened so a great breeze coming in and just the perfect day to boulder!! I spent about 2 hours here and there were mostly men climbing. This one guy that was climbing was so built that I had trouble focusing on my climbs vs staring at him. He was very nicely chiseled and chose not to wear a shirt, so I was drooling a bit haha. He was cute for sure and we even exchanged a few glances, wink wink! The routes here weren't intuitive for me. They use a color coding system here like Bouldering Project but it was odd to me that some graded easy climbs I had difficult with and then some that are supposed to be hard, I easily climbed those...I couldnt figure out what was going on... There are 4 bathrooms on the bottom floor and a few have showers in them too. Bathrooms were clean and nice. There is an upstairs area thats for yoga classes and also an area where they have ellipticals and bikes. I very much enjoyed climbing here and definitely will be back. Im considering either punch passes or maybe pull the trigger and join, but Oside is a little bit far for me to come regularly. I wish they had a location in Del Mar lol. When I was leaving a bunch of women showed up and aerial silk class was about to start so thats really cool they offer that too! Was so cool to see the colorful silks hang from the ceiling! Overall, an awesome experience! Thank you for my free climb birthday gift and Im definitely coming back!!

Mellow Friday Evening Session with Ocean Breeze at Vital Climbing Gym…read more Came in on a Friday evening around 7pm and it was surprisingly not packed at all -- perfect timing! One side had a class going on while the free climbers had the other side to themselves. The floors are super soft and bouncy, which makes it feel safe (great for teens or anyone worried about falls). The music and overall noise level stayed low, giving the whole place a nice mellow, relaxed vibe. Being an open structure, the ocean breeze sweeps right through and feels refreshing, especially on a warm evening. You could even hear the occasional motorcycle drive by on Coast Hwy, but that was the only real outside noise. I noticed a lot of stretching happening, so if you're into yoga or want a good change-up from just climbing, this seems like a solid spot for that too. Overall, a chill and welcoming environment. Definitely a nice way to unwind after the week.

Bring a few dollar bills for climbing shoe and chalk bag rentals because they really help! This climbing gym is close to the heart of campus and all the staff are friendly and often avid climbers themselves. The gym itself is not very large but there are enough variety of routes to keep you busy, entertained, and challenged. They'll change up the routes every quarter or so too. The inside of the gym can get a bit muggy and smelly sometimes but really, what did you expect to smell - roses and lavender? They put a big fan on blast to help air circulation and once you're in the gym for a few minutes you won't notice much. Overall, it's a really fun experience in this gym. Beginners should come the first week of every quarter to get their free experience. It can be busy but it's worth. If you're up for it, buy the $50 quarterly pass and the gym will be pretty empty when you go the rest of the quarter. Really nice! Go climb!

WELL.... 1. so cheap!!! only $9.00 for all the gear and climbing for the day (but really you'll probably only stay 1-hour before your grip gives out). this is regular price i believe. not just a student price. 2. they teach you to how belay! so bring a friend! it's pretty easy, man. 3. the walls are short, but they're not that easy. most of them do that forward slant/tilt thing so you really need to muster up all your strength just to hold on. if you're just beginning rock climbing its not a bad place, because it's still challenging enough. and being that its 50% cheaper then other places in san diego, big plus! i think i'll be back soon. yep.

Over at North City, parking is an issue. This gym definitely had more people and most of the bouldering happens on the first floor in a designated area. At 9:30am, part of the bouldering section was closed off for cleaning and a section of it was down as a new route needed to be set. It felt a bit cramped to boulder here and by 10:30am, a bunch of people showed up and that's when it really felt like packed sardines in here. Since I already had a good hour in here, I started to wrap up bouldering and headed out. Women's locker room on the first floor, clean and well stocked. Lockers available for use. Staff are really nice here and checked in on my experience when I left. Staff told me this location tends to be the busier one as it is central to everything, so I appreciated that tip. Overall, still a great climbing gym, I'd definitely come back!

I…read morewent here early May so it was extremely hot, even though I reached the trailhead around 9am. The drive to the parking lot was a little weird because after you get off the freeway, there is a dirt road for about 1.5-2 miles on which there were a lot of signs that said "no vehicles allowed" and "foot traffic only" so I wasn't sure if I should be driving. Once k got there, there were other cars parked too so my assumption is that those signs are applicable only during some seasons. The parking lot looks flat but you can see to trail once you start walking towards the canyon. The hike was really nice, it was definitely more of a walk rather than any uphills. It can get pretty hot so starting early in the summer can be advantageous.

The slots were fairly easy to navigate except for a few areas where you had to climb down or squeeze through narrow openings. You can also take the trail above the canyon which gives you panoramic views of the desert. There are 2 bathrooms but no sinks in the parking lot. Most cars can get to the parking lot but it's quite dusty. Come prepared with some water, snack, sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. It's $10 per day to visit the park. It's an honor system where you fill out the form, drop off the cash in box, and leave the parking pass on your dashboard. The one negative and reason for removing a star is the poor signage on the trail and how to get into the slots. When we went, there were only 2 other families but the signs were not clear which direction to go into the canyon or even back to the parking lot so we ended up taking a much longer and harder route than needed.
