There are a few places whose yelp reviews do not tell a true story. Places with great reviews that never live up and good places that have been given a bad rap. Elixir is one of those places that is so much better than their yelp rating. We recently started coming here once we found out it was an official OCSC bar. The staff is really cool and the drinks are strong so we kept coming back. Then, one day, we actually ordered something from the kitchen. Wow! Calling this bar food does not do it justice. I haven't eaten that many things off the menu here but everything I've had has been great. The shrimp tacos are great and the fish tacos are even better. Boyfriend ordered a burger once that was also really impressive. But NOTHING beats the fish and chips. The bf and I tend to consider ourselves fish and chips connoisseurs. We order it wherever its on the menu. I am completely serious when I say that the fish and chips at elixir are the best we have ever had. Two bites in and we were looking at each other in awe over what we had found. The fish is flaky and well seasoned and the fried are super crispy. I'm drooling right now thinking about them. This is probably not your typical review because I didn't just come in to eat but I brought 50 of my family/bridal party in for a Rehearsal Brunch on a Friday morning and David (the owner) and his staff went above and beyond with accommodating us. They let us choose our own menu, time and at a price that couldn't be beat. They spoiled us and I couldn't speak more highly of the staff, the food and the outside patio area that they made our own. I really like this place.. it's kinda off the beaten path, so not as crowded most times. Great place to go and grab a drink with friends. They've even re-vamped their menu. Most of the things we chose were pretty good. We started with the pretzels. I'm not sure if they were rushing with it or what, but they came out hard as a brick. They were happy to take them back. I chose the buffalo chicken wrap for my entree, which was pretty good besides the burnt outside where they toasted it. I also waited about 10 mins for ranch after getting it. Came here with a group of friends for Sunday brunch. Not super crowded like other places which was nice and they had a live DJ. I have to say i came in not expecting much on the food end but was pleasantly surprised. Probably some of the crispiest chicken tenders I've had they were bomb. I can only imagine the good reviews are for the food because the bar is severely lacking. My husband and I came in for a drink and were disappointed from the moment we sat down until we left. When we walked in we were greeted with a smell I can only describe as wet dog. After we sat at the bar I sat my arm in something really sticky. We were greeted fairly quickly and we asked for a drink menu (thinking they would have some great specialty drinks with a name like Elixir) the bartender just gave us a quick "no" and stared at us with a blank expression. My husband ordered a beer and I got a simple Malibu and pineapple which seemed to confuse her for a second. We drank our drinks quickly because we were getting so bummed by the bad attitude of the place. No smiles, conversation, or even nice decor to look at. I really do enjoy this place, the bartenders are always nice which is why I hate to leave a poor review unfortunately since this is my second encounter with a similar experience in such a short time I feel something needs to be said... a couple weeks ago I was there having wings when I encountered not one, not two, but three small cockroaches crawling around me and my food. The bartender was so apologetic but the manager seemed to brush it off and just comped my meal. Again one week later I was having a beer after work and saw another small cockroach crawl across the screen the worker was using. If this is happened twice within one week, some serious action should be done so I can get back to enjoying my favorite happy hour spot without worrying about little critters joining me. read more

This spot is a solid 3 star, A-OK! A newer kid on the up and coming block of downtown, this corner of Orange and Washington is really stepping up their game. Right across from Eye Spy and around the corner from The Courtesy and diagonal from Gringos... it's really a quadruple threat. Exposed brick, tall tables, wall lined with a cushioned bench... just make yourself at home. Tons of room, a back area with pool tables and a long bar to accomodate your thirst. We went during the weekend so there was a DJ, he was pretty cool. Def a nice place to post up in the beginning of the night and head out from there. I hear they have a fab HH on Fridays, I will have to check that out. Overall, I will def hit this place up again. It enough of a feel of downtown without being overwhelmed by the crowds of downtown, at least for now. read more

It's a pretty typical downtown bar, overall. The interior is large, with a room in the back containing a couple of pool tables, and it's attractive with the exposed brick and wood decor. At least, it's attractive now... we'll see what happens after a few months of college drunks spilling their drinks everywhere. The bartenders were attentive (and dressed for maximum tips) but not particularly skilled - when my wife asked about what kind of drinks they could make with one of the flavored vodkas, she had to ask the manager. She came back saying she could mix it with soda water or ginger ale. So maybe a good place to go for a beer or something named "_________ and _________", but don't expect a unique drink menu. It was a nice enough place to stop for a drink when we went, but I'm afraid it'll end up being another packed bar with sticky floors and people screaming, like something you'd find on Church St. I hope not, we have more than enough of those already. read more

Absolute embarrassment of an establishment. I come here to celebrate my girlfriends birthday and she gets groped by one of the djs and I get kicked out by security for trying to call him out for it. So I guess it's ok to grope girls at this place. Not only did security kick me out, one of the guys threatened me and said "I don't want you to get hit" after completely ignoring everything I said about the entire situation. I came here on a Sunday with a group of about 12 people. We probably took up about half the customers. We got to watch football, while we ate and drank. I first ordered the tomato bisque soup, which is some of the best I've had. A little spice to it, with chunks of tomatoes. Definitely a fan of this and I recommend it. I also ordered the blackened Mahi Salad. The Mahi didn't have an exceptional taste, but it didn't taste bad either. It was on a bed of mixed greens, along with a lemon vinaigrette dressing, which I did like. Our service was OK. I had ordered a drink, and she forgot about it, even when I waved at her from across the room with a gesture of "Where's my drink?". She had to come all the way over for me to remind her. Mediocre, at best. First visit was on a Friday night around 9p, in between happy hour and evening crowd, so my date and I were one of 3 groups in the whole place. The menu looked interesting and we were all excited to try the food. My boss and I ordered chicken tacos - mine without pico, hers without pico or onions. Her food arrived with green onions and the waitress was annoyed that she sent it back. Next her food came with no onions, but with pico. Sent it back again. I asked where is the salsa verde, guacamole, and sour cream that's supposed to be on the tacos. Instead of an explanation, I was given jerk BBQ sauce. Huh? Now, part of the reason we ordered these tacos was for all the guacamole, salsa, etc that was supposed to come on it - why did the waitress neglect to tell us they were out of half the ingredients?? I will say the Mac n cheese was tasty. But that's really the only positive I can give this place. read more

I caould see there being serious server issues with the size and layout of the place. I stopped by here one night this past week for a beer. I haven't been hanging out downtown much lately, so I didn't even know that this place existed until I was told about it and checked it out. I guess that it must be pretty new ...? (Jeff K.'s review is from only a few weeks ago, and he's the first to review it ... I guess that it must've just opened.) As Jeff said, the inside of the bar is fairly large and everything, as of now, looks very clean and new. The back room (where the pool tables are) is nice, as well. I wasn't here for very long during my visit, so I didn't pay a ton of attention to my surroundings, but it did look like a nice place, though probably mostly because it's new. The pool tables appeared to be brand new. The bar area was very tidy. The bartender from whom I ordered my beer was friendly. To be honest, just myself and 2-3 other people were in here during my visit ... it was pretty quiet. Perhaps it's more of a Fri./Sat. night place? I was in here on Wednesday, I think. So far, so good. Definitely will have to come back at some point down the road and see how it is when more people are around and after it's been open for a little bit longer. So, I kind of love this place! Especially when it's a weeknight and dead and you become best friends with the bartender(s) and other handful of people there. I love that it's a large open area, and don't even get me started on the exposed brick and the and pendant lighting on the columns! It's like HGTV threw up in there! SO CUTE! The specialty infused "elixirs" add a nice touch to their beverage selection, and the staff is always super friendly. Another detail which made huge impact on me was the motion sensor lighting in the restroom (at least in the ladies' room). Those lights don't need to be on when no one's there...So smart! We are frequent visitors to Elixir. We generally start our weekend nights here, for a meal and because the staff is phenomenal, especially Mikey. The atmosphere is very cool. A comfortable, classy looking bar. The food menu had improved drastically. The burgers are delicious as are the chicken sandwiches. Back to the staff. We frequent establishments that have good staffs, and swear off establishments that don't. We come back to Elixir because Mikey makes us feel like we're a part of the family. I usually never dine without checking out yelp first. I wish I would have last night before eating here. As many other yelpers have mentioned, the service is horrible. It took forever to be waited on. We had to ask for our drinks twice. Our food took much longer than it should have for the number of people in the bar. And, when it got there, it didn't come with silverware. We asked for forks and when they didn't come within 5 minutes, I went to the bar to get them myself. This is unacceptable. They are called Elixir, they have the definition of elixir on their website yet none of the servers can tell you what drinks they have and they do not have a drink menu. We were with a large party and many in the group like different cocktails ranging from cosmos, gin drinks and bourbon. The waitress couldn't recommend a single drink and didn't know if they have the stuff to make what people were asking for. When asking about the beer they had she said you can go and take a look at the taps. Everyone just really settled on some beer and not the drinks they wanted. I decided to go up to the actual bartender to try and get a proper mixed drink and it was no better. Now I will say the server and bartenders were very nice, friendly and attentive. The issue isn't with the service or food really but If you are going to call yourself elixir you would expect them to have some signature drinks, have the necessary items to make drinks you may want and have a drink menu so it is easy to order for both the customer and servers. We were about 20 people and everyone said the same thing and was disappointed that the place turned out to be just a Beer tap filling bar. We wouldn't book a party there again. read more

This is a pretty solid place. Standard Bar, nothing to rave about here.... With the exception of their interior! I am a sucker for brick walls, and industrial looking bars, with a large open area, and well.... this place kicks butt! Drinks are good, and every staff member that I had encounters with were very friendly! We were here pretty early in the evening. I think all around, this is a good place to go to pre-game, and meet up with everyone! As we were leaving, a guy was setting up for some live music, and that is always a plus! Food is no so bad for a bar. Pretty decent tater tots. The bar was really busy so we took a table by the pool table which by the way is to close to it so we had move a little farther away. My husband got his burger really fast but my sandwich took long time, later we found out that he got someone else's food. I ordered the pesto chicken sandwich which it was ok, a little too greasy for my taste. My husband ordered the elixir burger, good flavor but maybe needs a little more seasoning in the meat. Recently visited Elixir with a large group after several people have advised us against it. I can totally understand why and will not be returning. The service is extremely poor and rude. I know we had a big group (20) so you can't expect it to be fast or without mistakes, completely get that. However rudeness of the staff is just completely unnecessary and unwarranted. The food was ok, nothing to rave about, but it's a bar - what you'd expect. Word of mouth is really big in the service industry and having a poor experience will deter others from visiting. This is one of my favorite bars to watch a football game or pregame before soccer matches downtown. The food is delicious, the wings are my favorite. The bartender Mikey is amazing! Plenty of spaces to sit including inside, outside, bar top, booths, high top tables. Lots of TVs to watch your games. This is the spot where the central Florida gator club meets for game watching parties so Seminoles beware . At night there is live music and a bit more of a club type scene. Plenty of parking in the many parking garages nearby. The prices are affordable for drinks and food. Nice to have the extra bathrooms also. read more
