I abandoned the trail after a mile and a half because a snake was giving me the evil eye and wouldn't move, but it was a nice quiet forest. The trail passes various campgrounds and roads and the area still feels a bit urban, but for those without the time to go deep into the wilderness it is a nice option reasonably close to Augusta.

We were able to find a nook to keep our distance from people but some people were just inconsiderate and frankly dumb. There was a fowl smell near the swimming area, I don't know what it was exactly. The water is a bit murky. They do have grills to access. You can rent campsites here. They have restrooms. The ice cream truck came through. They have a boat ramp, fishing spots, a frisbee golf course, hiking and horse riding trails and just a lot to do.

The boat ramp can get pretty busy on the weekends but there is a nice loop you can do that let's put into the river and then back. There is a rope swing at one point of you don't mind getting in the murky water. It is a peaceful kayak route.

One thing you'll love about this campground is EVERYTHING! They have a putt putt course, pioneer home to view, marina close by, pioneer camping, cabins (new Cabins as well), premium camping with electricity, onsite store, boat ramps, picnic areas, group camping, shelters, trails and beautiful lakeside views. They also have old school bathrooms and newer family bathrooms. Other amenities include a playground and baseball court. They used to have swing sets near the bathrooms and a rickety wooden merry-go-round but I'm guessing those met their demise in the 90s. I do hate that there are no photos of those items, as i have found childhood memories of swinging on the swings and being thrown off the merry go round. The camping here is popular, and it's obvious why. They have everything you need and enough space away from the next camp site. We come more for the nostalgia, and I love reminiscing over my childhood. I do recommend that you hit the gas station across the bridge (leaving left out of the park) for wood ... you get more wood for your buck. At least that's what my girlfriend says. If you want a supreme camping experience, this is it!

Yet another wonderful Georgia State Park! Came it to camp for the weekend and ended up with a…read moregreat site right on the water. The park was very nice as were the facilities. The park staff were some of the best I have come across. They were super focused on letting us know what had changed in the park vs the map. She had a new map outlining all of the changes to the hiking trails due to storms over the past few years. The trails were well marked and easy to follow. The new beach trail didn't put you on the beach, but definitely near the water. Lots of elevation changes, so be ready for a moderate level hike.

We came here for the night hike which was lovely. Our naturalist, Barbara, was a delight who told…read morestories, described what we were doing every step of the way and surprised us with a special treat near the end of the hike. The rain kept us at bay until just before the hike so we didn't have extra time to explore the park but we will be back when in the area again.
