Great location. Quite park. Office is manned until 11pm. Everyone is super nice and helpful. Bathrooms very clean.

The land and park is a gem. It's quite magical here as we saw a red fox, a fawn, armadillo and flying squirrels the first day. We are staying in the old Guillebeau cabin, circa 1770. The cabin is nice because of not only the history of it, but it's away from all the other cabins and right up from the boat landing dock. But, the cabin does need some maintenance and furniture needs a good cleaning. So far, a great experience with quiet and beautiful surroundings. The water is clean and refreshing with tons of places to rent things from. read more

This was the 2nd time we have been there. The 1st time we were taking a maiden voyage in our motorhome so we did not get to really experience the park itself. We went this week, excited to actually try the park. Big disappointment. The restaurant was changed to totally vegan for a group they had there, no alternatives for other guests until Thursday,they did not inform us of this when we made reservations, luckily we had brought extra food to cook. The site we had did have an amazing lake view but the ants were unbearable. So much so, we had to bomb the camper when we came home because of the ant infestation inside. They were everywhere! don't think we will be back. read more

Hickory Knob restaurant is a great alternative to the local country club. Good food at reasonable prices. They vary the buffet according to season. Always a fish choice. Holiday buffets are always plentiful. Their soup and salad bar is a good lunchtime option for a lighter meal. We have stayed at the cabins a couple times and they are very comfortable and clean. Complete kitchens. The cabins have been remodeled since we stayed and I am told they are great. If you're thinking of golf, fishing or boating this is the place. Two semiprivate golf courses nearby besides the one at Hickory Knob. 70,000 acre Lake Thurmond Reservoir for fishing and boating. Y'all come! read more

We camped at Hickory knob state park in a motorhome, we enjoyed ourselves in the peaceful environment with very few other campers around. Although all services and activities were closed due to Covid19 virus, we enjoyed hiking the trails and the beautiful warm weather. read more

I would give a "O" star if possible. We will never camp here again. The roads to our campsite were washed out with loose gravel and holes...never a good thing with a camper. The site we were given was extremely narrow and difficult to even get the camper in...then, you could hardly walk by the camper from the truck because the site had such steep and washed edges with loose gravel. We had two small children and they couldn't even play outside because of the steep drop off and loose gravel. The site looked as if it hadn't been maintained in a LONG time. Our fire ring was also placed in the very corner, also on the steep drop off...it was full of trash and plastic. We couldn't even get to the waters edge because of the washed out path and the loose gravel. Very disappointing The water to the camper stunk so badly of "sulfur"...the entire camper stunk each time you turned on the water. And last but certainly not least...the ANTS!! They were everywhere...inside.. outside, ALL over the camper....Ugh!! We didn't even stay the second night as planned....Bad.... We will NEVER camp here again. read more

What a Gem of a State Park. We camped a couple nights and we really enjoyed ourselves. Had a dinner and next day a lunch at their restaurant and we were pleased. We swam in their pool twice , the water was clean and the grounds were well kept up. I want to come back and try the axe throwing and the archery. read more

We love coming here! We bought a boat a few years ago and this has become our favorite place to come stay. I can put the boat in the water and dock it at one of the docks the whole weekend. The restaurant has a great breakfast bar that has a great variety of food. Even though Hickory Knob is a couple hours away from home this has become our go to place for a nice weekend. Book a trip and I'm sure you will like it too! read more

A nice golf course. Very hilly with water in play on many holes. It's a little bit out in the middle of nowhere, but it's worth the drive. Plus we played 18 with a cart on a Saturday for only $20. read more

This is a great state park location. They have an 18-hole golf course on site. They have a swimming pool. They have a tennis court. The main building has the restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hamburger and fries was $8. Soup and salad buffet was $8. We have ate there about 4 times now. Overall we enjoy it. Service is hit or miss depending on who you get. A couple of days had soured cantaloupe on the bar. When I told her she said two others said the same thing. And yet it stayed. The soup was hotter than the sun if you got it for dinner and lukewarm if you got it as lunch was starting. Which worries me that they may use the table to heat it up and leave it there all day. There's a gift shop in this building with reasonable prices, the main desk where you check in is also where you sign up for activities. To the left of it is a lobby with 2 pool tables, Tv and lots of sitting areas. You can also check out games and puzzles from the main desk. Here's what you need to know though. It's first come first served for kayak and canoe rentals. They go quick. Archery needs to be scheduled with the park ranger at least 24 hours in advance, and they're not always here. We booked our room online. And what I didn't realize is the "hotel type" room where 411 is, is the only group that does not have a frig and microwave. Back porch has a view of the lake. But there's no screen so you need bug spray. We decided to stay an extra night and we stayed in the 300's. This is probably where we'll try for next time. It has lake access with a pier in the backyard and the playground in the front yard. It has a small fridg and microwave. This is the only state park in South Carolina that serves alcohol. Happy hour varies but you can bank on 5-7 in the dining room. Half of appetizers and maybe a dollar off drinks. But they're not marked up much anyways. Our son wants to always come back to this park though, because of Jay the Ranger and Phyllis his wife. We met them on the first night and they made him, especially feel like family. He got to help with the Easter egg hunt. Even got some pool table time with them. The people make it special. read more

Nice park with different methods of staying: tent camping,RV,cabins or lodge rooms. There is also a historic house and barracks you can stay in. There are 2 boat docks, swimming in the lake and pool is at your own risk. There are fishing rods to borrow and a "common" area with pool and ping pong tables, board games and TV. The restaurant was only open on the weekend when we were there and is the only place around. The lodge rooms in the 400 section do not have refrigerators, but the others do. There is no beach area in the park, we had to drive 5 minutes to Baker Park for a beach area. Nice for a long weekend. Highly recommend going down the road to the Ice Cream shop!!! read more

My daughter and I stayed here over the Labor Day weekend. We had planned (or I had planned) to make it a beach weekend but I waited too late to make reservations. This place was a good substitution. The only things missing were the sand and surf. There are a number of rental options on this huge property (cabins, a small house, motel rooms...), surprising me nicely because I've never stayed anywhere similar. There is a lot to DO here: archery, skeet shooting, golf, tennis, swimming (pool), walking/hiking, watching for wildlife, etc. We stayed in one of the motel-style rooms that surround the pool. It was a typical room but a bit nicer, with a small fridge, a microwave, a small table with two chairs, and there was a brand new flat screen mounted opposite the beds. There was also a radio and a CD player on the nightstand. Free wi-fi too! Labor Day weekend was quite busy but it was fun to meet other families and nothing ever seemed too crowded or noisy. The property has a small restaurant (which I called the dining room) that has the BEST fried chicken I've tasted in a LONG time. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served buffet style or special order from the menu. Pretty standard buffet items and some we had never seen before (several unidentifiable deep fried items) but what we ate was tasty and reasonably priced. Waitstaff was very nice, southern ladies young and old who treated us like family. The ranger on duty was really cool. I can't remember her name but she works hard at the park. VERY hard. Kudos to her for helping us with a special issue despite everything else on her plate. I wonder when she gets time to sleep... Finding this place was frustrating and longer than Google Maps said it would be. I'm not sure if we kept getting lost and driving in circles or the roads were just carved out strangely. Even a few folk with GPS said they got lost too. So take lots of snacks for the trip and be prepared to stop a few times for directions. We didn't find time to do everything we wanted to do (shoot skeet for me; archery for my daughter) so it's likely that we'll go back some time next spring or summer. read more

The park is gorgeous and there is no issues there so this review is mainly towards the Hickory Knob restaurant. They have a seafood buffet on Friday nights, so my hubby, father in law and I popped in to try it and need I tell you that we were so disappointed. The seafood Buffett only consisted of different types of fish and one kind of shrimp. I expected to see crab legs, fish, shrimp, and a bunch of stuff but it didn't so I was just a little disappointed there. The next disappointment we had, was that our sever was terrible. She greeted us right away and got our drinks but I guess getting the Buffett makes she can forget about us for the night. There was only three tables so they had no excuse to no refill our drink that has been out for a while now. She wanted to sit down and socialize with the other severs instead of refilling our drinks. Overall, the restaurant just wasn't what we expected and we were highly disappointed. The servers need to do a better job and pay attention to their customers. Also, my hubby said that the food tasted like it was frozen, and not fresh. read more

Its a nice park BUT there is a lot of yellow jackets around. We fought them all week while we were here. Also there is a 10pm quiet time which is a joke. Even people coming in to camp were coming in at midnight and after making a bunch of noise setting up. There is swimming spots but most access is in otheres camp sights the one that anyone can get to it is mussy red clay your feet sink in to. Pretty sure i will not be coming back here. read more

This park actually does have some very nice facilities. The golf course, restaurant, play ground and other amenities are nice. I cannot speak for the cabins or rooms here, but they look like the dumpy dorm rooms at the state fire academy from the outside. I am not impressed with the campground. For the "resort" park the campground here is not in the best of shape. I stay almost solely at SC state parks and this one is one of the worst one of the campgrounds where I've spent time(the other also happened to be on Clark's hill/Strom Thurmond lake) I saw it had gravel drive or pads but this is ridiculous. The loops have some places that are terribly washed out. One of the comfort stations is boarded up like a crack house, and the underbrush around the sites is not very well taken care of at all. We have a water front site and large fallen trees are in the way of the paths to the water. I'm still camping and I'm still happy, but I expected this campground the be a lot nicer with the other attractions here and it being called the "resort" park. This is our first trip here but I assumed this would be one of the nicest state park campgrounds and I was not correct. Other state park campgrounds are way nicer than this one. I would not recommend this campground to anyone that pulls a large fifth wheel or a nice class A motorhome. read more
