Maple curry drummies, collard greens, and Mac and cheese
    Zakia C.

I had my boyfriend to pick up some food for me today. I got the maple curry drummies, collard greens, and regular Mac and Cheese. It was just OK. Nothing really stood out to me, and the food was a bit bland. I'd give it a 5/10. Also, the website menu needs to be fixed. It only has very vague information like 2 sides meal, 1 entree with 2 sides, but it doesn't show you what the options are to choose from.

I love visiting ELife so much! This black owned business is such a treasure in Takoma Park. When you walk inside Elife you can see there are plenty of tables available for indoor dining, and the interior is very clean and tidy. Then you bask in the glory of an endless buffet of vegan food. From meatless chicken drummies, to fried "fish", to casseroles, Mac and cheese, and plenty of greens you are in awe of the variety of plant based dishes. In addition to the hot and ready food, you can also order sandwiches from them. I have not yet tried a sandwich because the Mac and cheese and faux meats are so hard to pass up. They have two different Mac and cheeses. I prefer the cashew based one since it is smoky, however their other Mac and cheese is reminiscent of your favorite childhood Mac and cheese. I am a sucker for those chicken drummies too. They offer them in a few different sauces, and Buffalo is my favorite because it is spicy. This meat is perfect for those that want to replace chicken in their diet as it is chewy and stringy like the real thing. ELife also has shelves of vegan dessert! They have many different cake slices to pick from. I have only tried the carrot cake which was definitely worth the calories. For those opting for a healthier sweet option, they also have a fridge full of juices. I hope you will show this black owned business some love. If you are ever to try a vegan meal, you cannot go wrong with anything on their menu. You will wish the chef lived with you so being vegan could always be this easy.

Customer service is just not impressive. I've been here twice as of the most recent renovations and at different times of day. Unfortunately I have yet to come and the raw food bar has all options available. You look at the menu online and see so many options...that they don't have. Not to mention this spot is soy-dominant when it comes to vegan options. Most of the cold bar options are not soy-free. Same is true for the hot bar. This is not health food. It's non-animal product meal options. Anyhow...When I walked in today, I spoke to the gent working the hot bar closest to the register. He said nothing nor gestured to acknowledge my greeting. I went to the cold bar which appears to be the start of the line to get your food choice(s). Well I stood there while the entire staff only acknowledged the hot bar. I eventually had to ask how to get service at the cold bar and they said people normally come to the hot bar to tell them they want cold bar cause they have no way of knowing who got in line first. Smh. Well how about a sign that states where the orders start? How about numbers? Better yet, I was initially one of three people in your establishment -- pay attention and don't be dismissive and rude. I put the poor service aside and got two small sides and a "large" side, all from the cold bar for $17.01. That includes the $.10 bag offered by the female who seemed exhausted to be there. Heck...I just spent $17 for three leftover selections of sides. Yes i want a bag to put my three containers, utensils and napkins. Please don't spare my pockets now.... I can't confidently recommend this restaurant unfortunately. Try at your own ability to overlook good customer service.

Still willing to drive 75 mi for this food!! I been coming for the past 2 yrs but I'll admit since my last trip I felt like there were sooo many new items added. I ordered online & picked it up. My favorite is usually the maple curry drummies, with cashew mac n cheeze & collard greens but to my surprise they also now offered "bowls" so I got both to go!! Food for the entire weekend! I ordered the vegan steak bowl & my mouth was watering! I couldn't resist desert so I added that too, lol.

Period…read more I've been seeing this place all over social media, so when I found myself in the area, I had to see what the hype was about. First off, parking is easy. It's in a shopping center, so nothing stressful there, and the restaurant itself is easy to spot. Walking in, the first thing I noticed was how clean, polished, and classy everything looked. Even though it was busy, it didn't feel chaotic. The staff immediately greeted me and asked if it was my first time which I appreciated. They didn't just rush me through the line; they actually took time to explain the menu, how the bowls are built, and offered samples. That alone made the experience feel welcoming and intentional. Now let's get into the FOOD. Everything looked fresh. They have about four rice options (which is already a win), and I went with the pineapple coconut rice. For my protein, I chose grilled chicken, but they also offer shrimp, salmon, and even a mushroom option for vegetarians and honestly, the mushrooms looked so good I almost switched. For my added sides, I kept it simple because I really wanted to taste everything. Collard greens and sweet potatoes. But they also had plantains, and okra....real deal soul food options. Then you get into the fresh toppings. Slaws, carrots, pickled veggies. I kept it light. I finished my bowl with collard green pesto (which intrigued me, and I'm glad I tried it) and added an étouffée sauce over my rice... and listen!!!!! That combo? Chef's kiss. I grabbed a tropical punch juice, and just like everything else, it tasted fresh and well-made. Let me say this clearly: the food is a 10/10. If you're someone who will give Chipotle chance after chance, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to try Spice Black. 10/10. Worth your money. Worth the hype. Worth the experience.

The restaurant is nicely decorated with vibrant colors and very clean. The service is friendly and welcoming. The food was okay. Not bad and just good in my opinion. Its not rave worthy but its still good. I would come back and try other options. This is still a good healthier option oppose to the many of terrible choices we have to choose from, this beats most unhealthy fast foods restaurants. For that reason I would return to try other food options. If you like chickpeas then this is your meal, Im not so it threw off the salad to me. I would have preferred chicken. Honestly, everything came together nicely as one salad, nothing was over powering. I'm just not a fan of chickpeas. They do have an option for shrimp but dont eat bottom feeders so that wasn't an option for me. My tastebuds are much different from yours so I would still give it a try. You might like it a little more than me. Its still a fairly good meal.

This was my first visit to Kitchen Savages. I had tried walking in without a reservation once before on a Saturday evening, and there were no seats available. So my first recommendation would definitely be to make sure you make/have a reservation because they do get busy (understandably so)!! Overall our brunch experience was good! I started off with the Mimosa Sampler for my drink order; I wanted to try the different flavours that were on offer. These were nice, but I'd hoped the presentation would have been a little better and the mimosas not as heavy with the juices. The food was great! Super tasty and packed with flavour. My husband had the Peach Cobbler French Toast and I ordered the 'Create-Your-Own' pasta. I requested it with salmon, shrimp and spinach, but it only came with the shrimp and spinach. Such a shame, because I can imagine the salmon would have made the dish EVEN better. When the bill came, it had the salmon (which I never got) listed on it - after pointing this out, the server checked with the kitchen, and kindly removed it from the bill. Overall, I would say that we really enjoyed brunch here. I will definitely be back in the future to try the main dinner menu & hopefully there'll be no mixups with what I order and what I get .

First, when my delivery driver dropped off my plate I was thinking to myself, Dang, this is heavy! I only ordered one plate but it felt like 2lbs of food. When I opened the container I was pleasantly surprised that it was packed! Two pork chops (sauce on side, thank you), huge servings of mac and cheese and greens and a cornbread. All fantastic. Now, I wasn't really happy about our seat but I couldn't see behind the wall to know if there was another table to request to move to. We were sat in the front corner I guess directly under a vent and it was already chilly outside. I didn't let it bother me because I really wanted to try ERRTHANG on the menu. Now, this is where I was about to get up and leave. We sat for a good while and NO ONE came to greet, take a drink order, or even ask have we been helped. I want to say it's because we were somewhat out of sight. Because it was freezing I got up and asked for another table, which was on the other side of the wall with all the other customers and much warmer even with the patio bar doors open. No, I don't remember my waiters name, but he came over immediately and apologized for us being stranded in the back. We went on to order our drinks which came fairly quickly and we ordered our food. I was kind of disappointed because he said they no longer served fried crab legs and should be taken off the menu, but that's OK. I was ready to order something else. I had Chef Mo's Shrimp & Grits and when I say it's the best shrimp and grits I've ever had in my life. It was amazing. The grits were three cheese grits with crawfish, étouffée, and large perfectly shrimp with some BOMB jalapeño beef sausage, which I would have removed, but I said let's do it. Best decision I've ever made. I cannot stop thinking about the grits. My friend ordered the Cajun fried fish and grits with a side of eggs (no pic). We both raved the entire time about how creamy and delicious the grits were. I didn't need to add anything, no butter, no salt, no sugar. They were absolutely amazing and I'm not even a huge grits fan. Now, the fish, the menu stated half a pound, which came out to be one small piece of whiting. I guess I was expecting a bigger piece or maybe two pieces because it was so tiny but that baby filet was seasoned to the gods, I mean perfect. The breading was so flavorful but not overpowering or salty. The eggs tasted like the eggs I had in the marines out of a bag, but he mix them with the grits and was fine. It was just...mid. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing stood out either. It wasn't memorable enough to have me thinking about coming back. Considering they're a Cajun-Latin fusion restaurant, I expected bolder flavors and more of a wow factor. As for the location, it's in an area that's clearly being revitalized and gentrified, but it's still not one of my favorite parts of town. The restaurant gives neighborhood bar energy more than destination restaurant vibes. Would I come back? Probably not on purpose. If I happened to be in the area with friends, and we needed a quick stop for food or drinks, sure. But I wouldn't make a special trip just to eat here. Eventually other customers arrived, but there was never more than maybe three or four tables for the duration of our visit. Despite emptiness, the service was pretty slow. It took 40 minutes for our wings to arrive and an hour for the crab dip and entrees. It would've been a shame for our food to take that long to arrive and not be good. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. Every dish was on point. The grilled lemon pepper wings are a must have. It's my favorite type of wing and most restaurants served them fried, but grilled is my favorite way to have it. The wings are well seasoned, and the meat comes easily off the bone. The wings are so good you really don't need the dressing, but I'm the type of girl that never passes up a dipping sauce. By the way, it comes with ranch dressing instead of blue cheese. The crab dip was rich and creamy, and topped with big lumps of crab meat. The crispy bread chips were slightly crispy but mostly soft, which I prefer over a harder, crispy bread. The catfish sandwich was perfection. It was fried just right, well seasoned, and an ample portion of catfish. The fish was so large that it completely covered bottom bun. I probably could've cut it in half and made a second sandwich. My mom was kind enough to let me try her salmon pasta; that's what I'll be ordering the next time. That salmon was seasoned on every side and cooked it just right. Everything about this dish was good. I'll definitely give this place another try, I just hope the service is a little quicker next time.
