One I had acquired about 40 years ago in downtown Chicago and the other a relatively cheap clock of which I was very fond. It turned out that there was nothing wrong with the older clock (please don't ask me to explain my stupidity) but the gentleman pictured cleaned it and told me all about its history. I was able to take it home immediately and he charged me a grand total of $8 for that very kind service. The other was a much more modern clock, one of four that I owned. It actually needed Far more work. Again, he explained its history. I received a call that I could pick up the second clock and a young gentleman whose family has been involved in the business met me with charm and graciousness. I paid $180 for a person from Elgin Clock Repair to come out to Bolingbrook to look at a vintage grandfather clock that we brought from Connecticut after my Dad passed away. The Elgin "expert" was negative about the clock saying that the movement was not original to the clock. He was very derogatory, almost to the point of being rude, about the value of the clock and how it had been "cobbled" together. He acted like he wanted nothing to do with repairing it and estimated between $2800 and $3400 to get it running. He had nothing good to say about it! We loaded the clock in my minivan and took it to a clock repair person in Pecatonica, IL. That person was excited to have the project to work on. He looked it up and handed us a photocopy of the original advertisement for the clock and explained that it was sold that way with "mismatched" parts. The English movement actually added $900 value to the clock. It's value was about $4000 in 1997. He repaired it for less than half of Elgin Clock's estimate! He said he loved restoring this clock. Replaced the battery while I waited in less than 15 minutes, and also advised me of a missing screw which they replaced, along with tightening up everything. Roland was easily able to make sense out of my watch bracelet resizing and he was able to do it while I waited. This was a much better option for me because this bracelt is more complicated than most and why risk scratching up your watch? The store is filled with grandfather clocks, cuckoo clocks, mantel clocks and wall clocks in a variety of prices....some very reasonable. If you appreciate clocks you should stop in. read more

This is an outstanding place to have your clock repaired. I live about 15 miles south of the shop and it was definitely worth the drive. I took my mantel clock in and it required a very minor adjustment. Jason fixed my clock, made sure it was working properly, and he checked the clock hands to be sure they were working correctly. I'm disabled and he very willingly got the clock out of my car. Jason refused to charge me anything and proceeded to let me know it was a courtesy visit. Went in to repair a big wall clock. Original owner's son met me. He could have easily charged me for any number of services with a variety of fees and months to wait. Instead he opened the back of the clock and reattached something at the top of the pendulum that became misaligned when I removed the clock to paint. It was fixed without charge! My visit was accompanied by advice on how to take care of it if it happened again. I will make it a point to do business there in the future. Bravo!! read more
