Live music.
Jen W.

Newly remodeled, this location had a re-opening celebration. The store and restaurant are on the first floor while the event space is upstairs. There was a beautifully laid out charcuterie spread, wine tastings and cocktails. Gift box options were on display. Live music was outside on the patio. The staff was helpful and friendly. This was my second Elephant's experience and it was a lovely one.

Frozen meals to go

Probably the best restaurant in the Johns landing hood... although there isn't much competition to be fair. They have a good menu with balanced options; some are healthy and others are for those who enjoy a nice splurge. Meals to go and pastries/treats aplenty. My favorite is their happy hour from 3-6 daily. Fresh beer for 5 bucks! WiFi is reliable and bathrooms are clean. Plenty of parking in the lot and on the street. Staff is friendly and helpful. No complaints. Seems kid and family friendly. My only feedback is that most of the seating isn't particularly comfortable. Could have better chairs with more pliable surfaces... just a thought. A long-standing staple here in Portland with lots of great choices to meet your current mood. Happy hour is a must do and the rest is good for a casual meal when you don't feel like cooking.

Smells bad too.

Well what a waste! Two sandwiches with inedible bread? Worse than cafeteria food. Save your money.

Matcha, Grilled Cheese + Tomato Orange Soup
Bianca T.

I love Elephants - I don't live in Portland anymore but every time I'm back I have to stop here. This location is super cozy and definitely my favorite. Despite it being such a simple meal, the grilled cheese here is always 1000/10 and the tomato orange soup is some of the best soup I've ever had - it's perfectly tangy. I love that they use local ingredients/support local businesses but I wish they'd open up in other states so I could have it way more often!

Sandwich
Mateo S.

Came in and got a delicious steak sandwich, as always the staff is the best around and the wait time took no more than 5-6 minutes. Great vibes as always but I can't help and feel robbed after paying nearly 4 dollars for a side of fries and getting what looks like maybe half a handful, like seriously you'd get more fries anywhere else at that price! Sad to say I won't be buying any sides here until they give you a fair portion.

Tuna melt

Elephants has a vibe unlike most cafes these days. It's clean, retro, inviting, and well organized. We stopped in for a sandwich on a Sunday afternoon, and it was very pleasant at 1:00 pm. Not too crazy, but pleasantly buzzing. I ordered the tuna melt, and they did a great job - I was quite happy with the results. Do know that most sandwiches only come with the sandwich. Not a bad thing, just setting expectations :) Also of note, there are lots of options, including sandwiches, salads, pizza, burgers, and more!

Doughy snickerdoodle. Hard to capture on camera but it was definitely under baked.
Alex B.

Great friendly people here and a wide variety of food to choose from. I only had coffee and a snickerdoodle cookie so in fairness to them not dinging them any points. However, they would need to do better with making sure that their cookies are baked through. The snickerdoodle was still doughy. There is a difference between soft cookies and doughy cookies. I'm not a big fan of doughy as it means it still raw dough which means the egg in the dough also wasn't cooked through and eggs not being cooked through can have bad effects.

Elephants has the best soup in town! Also top notch are their breakfast entrees and made to order breakfasts and lunches. If you love Macaroni & Cheese or Beef Stroganoff, these are must haves. You can order any pre-made entree by the pound, so it's easy to get a scoop of each for the undecided. Upstairs is a huge dining room with windows on 3 sides, large enough to have a reception, or large meeting or weekend workshop. (Just book in advance) There is a covered patio off this large dining room, which over looks the upstairs parking area. This makes it ideal, for traditional wedding receptions, where a bouquet is thrown from this covered patio (low balcony) out to the guests to catch it. Of course this could also be used for a workshop, where a prize is tossed out to the attendees in the parking area. Downstairs is like a bistro, with distinct areas, including a long full bar, a bakery, wood fired pizza oven, deli, and soup / sand which / cooked to order entrees, and gift section. Downstairs also has out door seating.

The most amazing cappuccino! They nailed my request and the foam. Great wine selections for purchase, and delicious grab and go salads.

Burnt Bacon Cheeseburger

This place was trash overpriced and burnt bacon on my burger by the time they brought the new bacon it to my table I was almost done with my food burger falling apart it was too crumbly after a long day of traveling from the coast this place disappointed my friend recommended this place I'll never come back not worth it.

Book, Diet Coke and Tomato Orange Half Pint
Ana R.

Is there anything better than the addictive tomato orange soup on a day that things aren't going your way? Methinks not. This location is great with lots of food selections and beverages. I love going there when the weather permits with a book and just relax. A truly dolce far niente lunch.

Condiment area needs love.

Great selection of good food, and great people in a cheerful and fun, if hygienically neglected, space. My only complaint: Tables and counter often stained and sticky. Floors not great, either. This self-bussing trend should not mean dirty floors or tables not cleaned between each party.

It also suffers slightly from that association, as one might consider it "hospital food", with all of its sordid associations. Thankfully, I can confirm there's nothing to worry about here. It's not "top shelf" sushi, by any means, but what they offer is still delicious, prepared competently and quickly, and priced affordably. My wife and I dined here after an entire half-day spent in a series of appointments and check-ups, and were famished by the time we wandered over to check this place out (we'd been meaning to ever since our last extended visit to OHSU). Among the multiple rolls in our order, the Miso Sexy and the Valentine rolls stood out among our favorites; they also make a decent miso soup here, too: not too watery, not too strong, but just right! As my wife is pregnant (again!), I know another visit to Momiji is on the horizon, as we will definitely be delivering at OHSU again. When that time comes, there's no doubt I'll be sneaking out of the delivery room, skipping the cafeteria, and making a bee-line straight for this place, likely smuggling a spicy tuna hand roll or two back with me (my wife's favorite).

I was looking for food nearby and came across this restaurant. The food was surprisingly delicious! We ordered the chicken katsu curry, kama-age udon (hokkai miso soup), and the kama-meshi seafood. The chicken katsu was cooked perfectly: crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside! The sauce also was the perfect texture and taste. My favorite was the kama-age udon with the hokkai miso soup. I love udon but sometimes don't like how thick it is because it fills you up faster and is harder to digest, the udon here is thinner which I fell in love with! It's soft and chewy and the perfect thickness: you dip it on the soup when you eat it. I also loved the soup, I usually have leftover soup when eat noodles, but I finished every last sip! Definitely recommend this dish if you were to only order one item! We also ordered the kama-meshi seafood. I thought this one tasted okay! The flavors of the seafood come through, but I personally like stronger and heavier flavors. It was worth a try! Parking: This restaurant is in downtown portland so it was difficult to find parking. We ended up parking at a nearby garage and paid for parking. They do have a few street parking spots near the restaurant if you want to test your luck! Seating and service: We were seated really quickly as we went on a weekday! They have several tables and a large table that can be reserved as well as bar spots. The restaurant overall looks really nice and is pretty spacious. The servers were really nice and fast to get you what you need! There were dragon on walls, umbrellas in the ceiling, a huge full service bar. Our dishes came out within few minutes. We got the chicken skewers, chicken pho, chicken luc lac and steak rolls. We liked the small plate dishes, but the entree ones were disappointing. The chickens were chunky and dry, bland flavor. As much as we loved the vibe of the place, we didn't enjoy the food as much. While a few things stood out, the meal as a whole didn't quite hit the high marks I was hoping for. Here is how it broke down: The Starters (The Highlight): Karaage (Fried Chicken): This was easily the best part of the meal. The pieces were large, juicy, and had a great, ultra-crispy crunch on the outside. Takoyaki: Decent texture and well-presented on a long plate with plenty of bonito flakes, making it a solid appetizer to share. The Mains (A Bit Average): Spicy Ramen: The noodles had a good chew, but the broth lacked the deep, rich complexity you expect from a really stellar ramen. Even with the spicy paste mixed in, the flavor profile felt a bit flat. Chashu Don (Rice Bowl): While it was a generous portion packed with chopped chashu and minced meat, it ended up tasting a bit monotone after a few bites and could have used more balance or a punchier sauce. Overall, it's a fine spot if you want a quick, filling meal, but the flavors didn't quite wow me enough to make it a standout. Solid, but nothing mind-blowing.
