It was much spicier than I anticipated but that is because I wasn't expecting it to be spicy at all. Maybe that's on me for not reading the description closely enough. Wow! Let me just say the food here is excellent! Everything I ordered was phenomenal. I want to come back here just to eat here again. I was not impressed with the Customer Service as I got a snarky response when I called to see if they were open. It went exactly like this: "Hello, Element Gastropub, (me) oh great, I was just wondering if you guys were open, response: we wouldn't answer the phone if we weren't open. (Me shocked), OK thank you! See you soon! When arrived, it was very busy, but there were no signs indicating to seat ourselves. I was there before others came but they sat down before me. They must've known from prior experiences. It took a while to receive the menu, then a long while to receive my order. I ended up ordering the chicken sandwich as that was recommended and a "chicken" pot pie to go as I knew it was going to take a while if I ordered it later. I highly recommend this place in spite of the customer service, which ended up being OK after all. She was by herself that day and could've been stressed out. The inside vibe was pretty cool. My cousin came to Raleigh to visit me. We had to try a vegan restaurant since she only eats Plant Based. We settled on Element Gastropub due to its location on Fayetteville St, as it has a modern and historic vibe that we both enjoyed as a Sunday afternoon to explore. I made a reservation, but it wasn't needed. Element Gastropub was pretty slow this afternoon, and we sat upon arrival. The restaurant presentation is clean and inviting. I felt at home. Our waiter was Virginia. Virginia couldn't make many recommendations, but I appreciate her honesty. Virginia was attentive and checked in often. We met Amanda, who was also helpful with the menu explanation. All of the Element Gastropub options are plant-based. We shared the half order of barbecue nachos and Coconut Skrimps. Our Coconut Skrimp was very good! The chili bang bang sauce was a delicious addition to the skrimps. For my entree, I ordered the Carolina barbecue sandwich with coleslaw and home fries. I could only finish a portion of my barbecue sandwich, and as a pork fan, surprisingly, I enjoyed the plant-based barbecue sandwich. We enjoyed the delicious pineapple Kombuchamosa with our meal. Everything was a 4*. All the food items we ordered were soy-derived protein from the barbecue nachos and sandwich. I do understand Soy is a high-quality, cost-efficient protein alternative for vegans. Still, I would like Element to expand its options by adding jack fruit, mushrooms, and cauliflower to the menu. I would love to see more fried chicken variations. I get that soy is easy, but additional options would elevate the menu to the next level, and I would love to see it. So this is definitely not my typical food style. Myself and some coworkers were in Raleigh for trade show and went with one of our vegan coworkers to try this place out. It's one of his favorite restaurants in Raleigh, but I was a bit leery. I ended up trying their smash burger, figuring it would be the safest option. I will admit, it was a lot better tasting than I had expected. The patties were Impossible Burgers, which I'd never had roped with cashew cheese, something I'd never heard, but tasty. It was served with delicious, perfectly crispy fries. This place is conveniently located right across from the convention hall. They have an odd, but fun interior, with what appeared to be a good beer selection. The staff was friendly and quick to answer any questions the non vegans had, even offering suggestions. I was looking forward to brunch at Element Gastropub but left disappointed. They do not provide regular menus. The service was not the best. I am not sure if they are short staffed or we just got a non attentive waiter. The fruit was the best of the items I ate and it is a good thing I like pineapple as that is pretty much the only fruit I had besides a few grapes. No strawberries or blueberries. The waffle might have tasted better with more syrup or maybe waffles just don't taste good vegan. I should have gone with a salad. Iced tea would have been nice to drink but they don't serve iced tea. I was so excited to see sponge cake on the menu as I love that delicate and light cake. This was more of a sheet cake and very heavy. It was not a sponge cake. When checks were being paid, when I received the machine back the waiter had already put in the tip. Definitely the best vegan spot in town by a landslide. It's located downtown in a nice area with both indoor and outdoor seating and street parking. There's cute modern decorations inside and it's spacious and clean. The owner is very kind and welcoming and you can tell he really cares about the quality of the food and satisfaction of the guests eating there. The prices and portions are great and it's not as expensive as some other vegan places tend to be. The element burger has been described to me as the best vegan burger my vegan friends have EVER had. I believe the patty is a recipe created by the owner's wife too! The bbq sandwich was said to be a close second to the element burger. The cheesesteak was great- freshly prepared, toasted bread, and the cheese tasted great. The mushrooms are diced up enough to not be noticeable so even if you don't like mushrooms you'll still love it. The tater-tots are a great side and always a hit too. The cookies and almond milk were warm and tasty and a cherry on top to the meal. Definitely worth your time and money coming here! read more

On a recent trip to Raleigh, I searched out some Vegan places and this was the first to come up. Since I absolutely love Gastropubs and was trying to be good on this trip, this immediately went to the top of the list. I had trouble deciding as they had a hot chicken sandwich, bbq nachos and many other items that caught my eye. I have never seen a vegan Pork Belly option anywhere before, so that's what I ordered. I was glad I did. I asked if I could upgrade my fries to either the loaded tots or fries with other toppings and was told no. Seems dumb if someone wants to pay more for adding something to the fries, but can't. Bummer. The fries were good on their own though, but wish I could have gotten some toppings or something. Missed opportunity for the upsell on that one. Back to the Pork Belly... I've had real pork belly and this vegan version didn't remind me of pork belly at all. Don't take that as bad as pork belly can just melt in your mouth with fat, which can be good, but it's part of the reason I have to go vegan. But this sandwich was delicious AF. It was like an elevated McRib sandwich with better "meat", better toppings, and better portion. I really enjoyed it. I ordered dessert (some German almond orange cake). The dessert was just OK, a little dry, and could have used a few minutes outside of the fridge before being served (the icing was cold and hard). After letting it sit for a bit at the table, it was better. Service was OK, but everything seemed rushed. The texture of the "chicken" was the closest to chicken breast I've ever had. I'm always skeptical about impossible meats at restaurants because I imagine a frozen patty being placed on a grill with no love. They mentioned they grab the paddies and then mix them in their own seasoning before grilling them. You can definitely taste the difference in seasonings. The bbq loaded nachos was a hit, the cheese and the sour cream tasted freshly made, the shredded chicken was so tasty and once again you forget it's not chicken. Truly I only post a critical review when I think it's important to do so, which is almost never. However I do think Element has potential and I had a very disappointing experience. The service was good, ambience was good. Food came quickly and we were seated immediately. It's conveniently located to downtown Raleigh. We ordered the BBQ nachos and pimento rangoons to start. For entree we shared spaghetti carbonara and a side kale salad. For reference-- the spaghetti carbonara is a "chef's table" menu item and priced at $19.75. what came out was incredibly disappointing-- it was flavorless and we could eat only a few bites of it. For the price point, we had high hopes. The BBQ nachos are delicious, however the tortilla chips being used cannot support the toppings at all so we had to eat them with a fork. Which is fine!!! It did make it tricky to consume at first for sure. The pimento Rangoon was decent-- a little oily but flavorful. The kale salad (which I had ordered in the past and enjoyed it-- I have come here once before closer to when they first opened and the food was enjoyable.) did not come with kale whatsoever-- it was about a cup of chopped romaine, topped with a quarter of a red onion, celery and tomatoes. I removed the celery and onion and it was a good little salad, however it just wasn't what it said it was. We also got beverages-- my wife couldn't taste the tequila in their kushurita, but it was drinkable. The best thing we ordered was my canned cbd drink, and I enjoy having cbd options on the drink menu for sure. At a $100 bill, it was severely disappointing. Especially the entree and the salad. The Nashville burger was not the move as it was very oily to the point where neither of us ate it. The buffalo chicken sandwich was pretty good and would definitely get that again. Their sides (fries and chili) were amazing and loved those. Also to note, they do not have their ice cream in the winter. The atmosphere was pretty nice and right in the middle of downtown raleigh. Let me say that I love the food at this place. Their fries are the best I've had anywhere, and their salads are fantastic. The ambience is fine, and I like their outdoor seating. However, after eating there many times, I do not know how I miss out on the good service (a few) others write about. Although the staff is friendly, I've never had good service. My last time there, I walked in after the lunch rush. To summarize this visit, three staff members were chatting at the bar when I walked in, and their last indoor table customer was leaving. Rather than walking up to greet me, I had to ask from the doorway if I could sit outside. The answer was sure, but rather than helping me, they said someone would come out to me with a menu. After about 15 minutes, I had to return inside and ask for a menu. The same three staff members were still chatting at the bar, and their demeanor was that of a nuisance. Or it could have been a surprise look, because one waitress was mostly finished with the three outside tables near me. The three inside could see through the glass windows that I was not being helped after I had seated myself. When I finally got to order, the food was slow, even with no other customers at that point. Plus, I ordered the premade special. It was the Tuscan artichoke kale skillet, "a cashew-based skillet, artichoke hearts, kale, white beans, garlic, lemon, and sourdough." Since the description started with artichokes, that was an easy decision for me, and since I had just returned from Italy, that was a second reason for my choice. I could only find a mere hint of any resemblance to artichokes present. It was also very spicy, which was not disclosed in the description. The picture of the dish represented a casserole-type dish, i.e., in a skillet. It was soup! Which then made the sourdough bread make sense. It was not a bad dish, but artichokes should have been more prominent, and spicy should have at least been mentioned by the wait staff, if not on the menu. My water never got refilled, despite it being a very hot day. The drink service was so slow that I finally asked for two simultaneously. The drink service has always been slow, even for a draft pour on all my visits. As I was leaving, I told my waitress that she might want to inform the chef to mention the spice on the menu for this dish. She shrugged and walked away as I was still offering this suggestion. I have no doubt the chef never got this comment. I will return because I like the food, but they could do better with service. read more

I ordered the chorizo mac and cheese and the totchos - a play on the word nachos. The mac n' cheese was a soupy mess; I suggest taking it off the menu or a total make-over! I loathe to waste food but could not bring myself to finish it Thankfully, the tots saved the meal; a generous portion and crispy hot but it came with green instead of black olives as per the menu description. I love Element Gastropub, and I've visited several times since January 2022. The food is usually great. I love the chemistry vibe. I've never had much of a problem with the service, even when there are busy events happening outside. I've had items from the brunch and lunch / dinner menus. I've even brought work colleagues for team lunches. All around, I've been a big fan! That being said, I didn't fully love my experience today. I went for brunch today, and it was pretty empty. The owner (I think) had his kids with him, which I have absolutely no problem with, for the record. If they got too loud, he was super on top of taking care of them and quieting them down. They had a book of "would you rather" type questions that the staff were looking through and reading aloud at the bar, and some of them were a little more gross than I'd like to hear while eating. If the restaurant had been busier, I doubt I would've heard them reading the questions out. I love that they've created a comfortable environment for staff to socialize and have fun, and it wasn't too bad that it impacted me finishing my meal, but it still wasn't the most ideal conversation to overhear. My biggest frustration, however, was with the food, or rather the bill. I had a sausage, egg, and chz biscuit, and the biscuit was a little doughy inside but not so much that I didn't finish it. (The biscuits here are so good that even a little gummy texture couldn't put me off!) I wanted some caffeine, so I had 3 cups of drip coffee with my meal. I was charged for 3 individual cups of coffee. It feels like such a silly thing for me to be unhappy with, but I honestly wouldn't have ordered coffee at all if I'd known I'd be charged for refills. I'm happy to spend $3-ish on coffee with brunch while I'm there and away from my own coffee machine, but to spend $10.50 on coffee because of the refills? That's not what I expected at all. As far as I can remember, I haven't paid for refills here before today, and it surprised me enough that I just paid and left rather than bringing it up. When I got to my car, I actually went back to check the menu to see if it said there were no free refills, and I couldn't even find coffee listed at all. If it were listed on the menu as saying no free refills, I would just be frustrated with myself for overlooking it, but that wasn't the case. I would recommend to the owner to add that in if it's a new policy so no one else gets surprised like I did. At the end of the day, I still love Element Gastropub. Am I frustrated with my experience? A little bit, yes. Am I planning to never come back again? No. I will almost certainly be back. I just probably won't get coffee next time. read more

A caution for those with allergies--the cheese contains cashew so be careful if you have a tree nut allergy. I did not pay close enough attention and ordered my daughter's pretzel with the cheese sauce not realizing that it was a nut product. She only had a little taste of it and was totally fine even though she is allergic to cashews. As a hardcore carnivore, the only reason I ever stepped foot into this vegan paradise was because my friend is leaving Raleigh and moving all the way across the country, and so we met here for her farewell dinner. I was very skeptical that anything on the menu would taste even remotely like meat, but I was pleasantly surprised! I ordered the Smashburger, which is 2 impossible burger patties on a bun with their housemaid vegan queso slathered in between the patties. I will say, the taste of the patties was pretty authentic to what I would expect from a burger, minus any charred taste that one might expect from a grill. However, the texture was not quite there: the patty fell apart pretty easily, but despite this, the burger itself was tasty and well prepared! The real star of the show was the garlic rosemary french fries that came with the burger. Can I just say, oh. My. GOD! I don't know what they put into those french fries, but I will likely be back just for a heaping plate of those french fries alone. I highly recommend getting a side of the vegan ranch to go with the fries! Despite not having any dairy in the ranch, the ranch was very tangy and delicious, and accompanied the fries perfectly! All in all, the food was adequate, the service was amazing, and the fries were out of this world! I'm only giving it four stars because of the texture issue, but if you're looking for a vegan restaurant with good meat substitutes, I can say, as an unrepentant carnivore, this is probably the closest thing you'll find to the real deal. Hateful, delusional owners. Uncomfortable service. Hit or miss food. Requested a manager to discuss a bad server. Guy at the host stand said manager was busy and basically to go away. I was confronted by our server who saw us whispering and announce to the whole restaurant "did I disrespect you? Did I disrespect you" Wrote this review on Google review and the owners response was out of this world rude.They called us miserable people, and liars. They simply could have said "sorry we messed up, we will talk to your server and he should not have confronted you" instead the owner wrote the attached comment. Here's a rundown of our experience written by my friend who I was with and is too scared to even write post: I"Hi, Friend here, I think you (the owners) are missing the entire point of my friends review but I also don't think you're really reading it because you contradicted yourself in your reply. From the moment we sat down the server had an attitude like we just inconvenienced him by eating at your restaurant. I get it, people have bad days, I even said to my friend geez is he ok? I feel bad. Also, being short staffed is not an excuse in this situation, the restaurant wasn't busy and it looked like the appropriate amount of staff for the amount of people. Also we were nothing but nice and polite to this sever and he still treated us at every encounter like we had personally done something to him. Even on bad days it's not difficult to be nice to someone being nice to you especially when it's your job. Now on to the nachos, no we were not complaining about getting free nachos. We didn't hear him say anything he just set them on our table and walked away. We didn't want someone's nachos to get tainted by us if they were on the wrong table, we literally didn't want you guys to have to waste and remake, sorry for being a decent human??? And we kindly said' "excuse me we didn't order nachos" and then he finally speaks up and says it was a mess up and snatched them off the table we were like wtf? Any normal person would have just explained it was a mess up and we would have been extremely thankful. We are not miserable people, your employee was. By the time we got our food we just wanted to leave because he made us feel so unwanted at your restaurant. If that's the vibe you want that's fine but maybe put it in the description on your website that you'll be treated like you do at dicks diner and Karen's diner. AND my friend did ask for a manager (obviously) to speak with and the guy standing at the host (totally irrelevant if he was a host or not) said they didn't really have a manager there today but the guy bartending was the closest thing to manager but we didn't feel comfortable going over there now that the waiter had interjected himself into the convo once again making us feel uncomfortable and in a hostile environment. Honestly, your response as an owner was very immature. You clearly do not like when people say they don't like your food but that's apart of life and owning a restaurant, don't get so butt hurt over it. Now that's all I have to say. " read more

This is a great place to enjoy vegan dishes! I decided to give this restaurant a try on a Wednesday evening when it was very quiet. The wait staff was outstanding (almost too attentive?) and the food was incredible! I'll be back to try more dishes! read more
